Modern High Performance Computing (HPC) systems are made up of thousands of server-grade compute nodes linked through a high-speed network interconnect. Each node has tens or even hundreds of CPU cores each, with counts continuing to grow on newer HPC clusters. This results in a need to make use of millions of cores per cluster. Fully leveraging these resources is difficult. There is an active need to design software that scales and fully utilizes the hardware. In this dissertation, we address this gap with a dual approach, considering both intra-node (single node) and inter-node (across node) concerns. To aid in intra-node performance, we propose two novel concurrent data structures: a transactional vector and a persistent hash map. These designs have broad applicability in any multi-core environment but are particularly useful in HPC, which commonly features many cores per node. For inter-node performance, we propose a metrics-driven approach to improve scheduling quality, using predicted run times to backfill jobs more accurately and aggressively. This is augmented using application input parameters to further improve these run time predictions. Improved scheduling reduces the number of idle nodes in an HPC cluster, maximizing job throughput. We find that our data structures outperform the prior state-of-the-art while offering additional features. Our backfill technique likewise outperforms previous approaches in simulations, and our run time predictions were significantly more accurate than conventional approaches. Code for these works is freely available, and we have plans to deploy these techniques more broadly on real HPC systems in the future.

Les endosomes de recyclage fusionnent transitoirement avec la membrane plasmique des dendrites neuronales / Recycling endosomes undergo kiss and run exocytosis in hippocampal neuronsJullié, Damien 25 October 2012 (has links)
Le trafic membranaire est essentiel dans les neurones pour la morphogénèse, le recyclage des vésicules synaptiques et des récepteurs. L’exocytose des récepteurs AMPA contenus dans les endosomes de recyclage (ER) est nécessaire pour l’expression de la plasticité synaptique à long terme (PLT). Pour étudier ce mécanisme, nous avons visualisé l’exocytose par microscopie de fluorescence sur des neurones en culture transfectés avec le récepteur de la transferrine (TfR), un marqueur des ER, fusionné à la phluorine. Un examen systématique des événements d'exocytose a révélé des différences de comportement. Dans la plupart des cas, les récepteurs diffusent rapidement dans la membrane plasmique après exocytose (discharge), mais dans environ 25% des cas, les récepteurs restent concentrés (display). L’utilisation de changements rapides de pH extracellulaire autour de la cellule montre que l’exocytose est transitoire : après quelques secondes (médiane 2.6s) les récepteurs sont réinternalisés. Ce mécanisme a pu être étendu aux récepteurs AMPA et β2-adrenergique, pour lesquels l’exocytose de type display avait déjà été décrite. L’imagerie deux couleurs montre que Rab11, un marqueur des ER, est enrichie au site d’exocytose. L’expression d’un dominant négatif de Rab11 connu pour inhiber la PLT provoque une diminution spécifique de la fréquence des évènements discharge. Dans nos recherches sur le mécanisme de l’exocytose, nous avons testé l’implication des protéines SNARE dans la fusion membranaire. Ainsi VAMP4 est enrichie avec le TfR dans les ER qui sont exocytés à une fréquence équivalente. De plus, elle est requise pour le recyclage du TfR. / Membrane trafficking is essential for neuronal function: from growth of neurons and synapse formation to recycling of synaptic vesicles and receptors, questions concerning exocytosis and endocytosis are stimulating neurobiology research. In particular, trafficking of glutamate receptors present in recycling endosomes (REs) is necessary for the expression of long term potentiation (LTP). To investigate the mechanism of exocytosis in dendrites, we have imaged cultured rat hippocampal neurons transfected with transferrin receptor, a classical marker of REs, tagged with phluorin. As for AMPA receptors or β2-adrenegric receptors, single exocytic events has revealed two main behaviors: in most cases, receptors diffuse quickly in the plasma membrane after exocytosis (discharge events), but receptors can also remain clustered (display events). Using fast extracellular pH changes around the recorded cell, we show that for display events exocytosis is transient: after a few seconds (median 2.6 s) receptors are internalized. Moreover, using two color imaging of single exocytosis events with markers of neuronal compartments, we found that Rab11 is enriched at the exocytosis site, confirming the endosomal origin of the vesicles. Overexpression of a dominant negative form of Rab11 known to impair LTP decreases selectively the frequency of discharge events. As SNARE proteins are involved in virtually all membrane fusion processes, we investigated the role of Vamp proteins in somatodendritic exocytosis events. We found that Vamp4, unlike Vamp2 or Vamp7, is enriched in TfR containing compartments and can undergo exocytosis at high frequency and is required for TfR exocytosis.

Genom att konsolidera transporter kan utnyttjandegraden av transporterna öka. Ökad utnyttjandegrad kan även hjälpa företagen att gå mot cirkulär ekonomi där målet är att utnyttja resurserna maximalt. För små och medelstora företag kan det dock vara svårt att bygga upp samarbeten med andra företag. Dessa företag möter olika möjligheter och hinder vid implementering av transportkonsolidering, därför kommer denna studien identifiera vilka dessa är.Studien har genomförts i samarbete med 16 företag i Orust kommun och har visat att de största hindren vid transportkonsolidering är kundkrav, produktkrav och informationsdelning. Företagen upplevde att kundernas krav på korta ledtider skulle göra det svårt att samordna transporter med andra företag. Många företag upplevde även att produktkraven deras produkter ställer på transporterna skulle försvåra transportkonsolidering. Studien kunde dock visa att flera företag hade liknande produktkrav vilket möjliggör transportkonsolidering. En del företag ansåg att det saknades stöd och samarbete för den informationsdelning som krävs vid konsolidering.De främsta möjligheterna som identifierades är företagskulturen och viljan att gå mot en mer hållbar distributionskedja. The companies perceived that customer demand for short lead times would make it difficult to coordinate transport with other companies. Monetary policy and economic growth : lessons from East African countriesNyorekwa, Enock Twinoburyo 07 1900 (has links)
This study empirically examines the impact of monetary policy on economic growth in three East African countries (Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania). The role of monetary policy in promoting economic growth remains empirically an open research question, as both the empirical and theoretical underpinnings are not universal, and the results remain varying, inconsistent, and inconclusive. This study may be the first of its kind to examine in detail the impact of monetary policy on economic growth in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania – using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds-testing approach. This study used two proxies of monetary policy, namely, money supply and interest rate, to examine this linkage. The results were found to differ from country to country and over time. The Uganda empirical results reveal that money supply has a positive impact on economic growth, both in the short run and in the long run. However, interest rate was found to have a positive impact on economic growth only in the short run. In the long run, interest rate has no significant impact on economic growth. In Kenya, both short-run and long-run empirical results support monetary policy neutrality, implying that monetary policy has no effect on economic growth – both in the short run and in the long run. The results from Tanzania also reveal no impact of monetary policy on economic growth in the long run – irrespective of the proxy used to measure monetary policy. However, the short-run results only reveal no impact of monetary policy on economic growth only when the interest rate is used as a proxy for monetary policy. When money supply is used to measure monetary policy, a negative relationship between monetary policy and economic growth is found to dominate. Overall, the study finds that monetary policy is only relevant for economic growth in Uganda and only when money supply is used as monetary policy variable. Therefore this study recommends a money supply based monetary policy framework for Uganda. The study findings also suggest that monetary policy may not be a panacea for economic growth in Kenya and Tanzania. / Economics / M. Com. (Economics)

[pt] A modelagem de reservatórios consiste em uma tarefa de muita relevância na medida em que permite a representação de uma dada região geológica de interesse. Dada a incerteza envolvida no processo, deseja-se gerar uma grande quantidade de cenários possíveis para se determinar aquele que melhor representa essa região. Há, então, uma forte demanda de se gerar rapidamente cada simulação. Desde a sua origem, diversas metodologias foram propostas para esse propósito e, nas últimas duas décadas, Multiple-Point Geostatistics (MPS) passou a ser a dominante. Essa metodologia é fortemente baseada no conceito de imagem de treinamento (TI) e no uso de suas características, que são denominadas de padrões. No presente trabalho, é proposto um novo método de MPS que combina a aplicação de dois conceitos-chave: a técnica denominada Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH), que permite a aceleração da busca por padrões similares a um dado objetivo; e a técnica de compressão Run-Length Encoding (RLE), utilizada para acelerar o cálculo da similaridade de Hamming. Foram realizados experimentos com imagens de treinamento tanto categóricas quanto contínuas que evidenciaram que o LSHSIM é computacionalmente
eficiente e produz realizações de boa qualidade, enquanto gera um espaço de incerteza de tamanho razoável. Em particular, para dados categóricos, os resultados sugerem que o LSHSIM é mais rápido do que o MS-CCSIM, que corresponde a um dos métodos componentes do estado-da-arte. / [en] Reservoir modeling is a very important task that permits the representation of a geological region of interest. Given the uncertainty involved in the process, one wants to generate a considerable number of possible scenarios so as to find those which best represent this region. Then, there is a strong demand for quickly generating each simulation. Since its inception, many methodologies have been proposed for this purpose and, in the last two decades, multiple-point geostatistics (MPS) has been the dominant one. This methodology is strongly based on the concept of training image (TI) and the use of its characteristics, which are called patterns. In this work, we propose a new MPS method that combines the application of a technique called Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH), which permits to accelerate the search for patterns similar to a target one, with a Run-Length Encoding (RLE) compression technique that speeds up the calculation of the Hamming similarity. We have performed experiments with both categorical and continuous images which showed that LSHSIM is computationally efficient and produce good quality realizations, while achieving a reasonable space of uncertainty. In particular, for categorical data, the results suggest that LSHSIM is faster than MS-CCSIM, one of the state-of-the-art methods.

AGRICULTURAL INTERSECTORAL LINKAGES AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTSubramaniam, Vijayaratnam 01 January 2010 (has links)
The transition from communism to capitalism at the end of the last century was one of the most significant events in the world economy since industrialization. During the latter part of the 1980s, people the Central and Eastern European countries and former Soviet Republics opted for a change from highly distorted command economic system to a market driven economic system. Privatization and liberalization policies led to major changes in the commodity mix and volume of agricultural production, consumption and trade. However, the changes and the impacts varied among countries as they followed different transition strategies.
This study investigated the impact of market liberalization on the agricultural sector, as well as how the inter-sectoral linkages among the agricultural, industrial and service sectors responded in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary using time-series analysis. The study estimated an econometric model that incorporates the linkages among the sectors using a Vector Error Correction Model. The procedure identified long-run and short-run relationships for each country. The results showed that a sector can have a negative linkage to other sectors in the short-run; however, that does not mean that the linkage will be negative in the long-run.
Impulse response functions were constructed to determine how a system reacts to a shock in one of the endogenous variable in a model. The study explored how a shock in the agricultural sector was absorbed by the other sectors in the economy, and how a shock in the other sectors was absorbed by the agricultural sector, in all four countries. The responses reflected how the variables are interrelated within a country, and how the shocks are transferred through different linkages over a long period of time. Such dynamic analysis was used to identify the total impacts of different policy alternatives.
