Adapting the environmentallysustainable logistics performancemanagement process

Persdotter Isaksson, Maria January 2018 (has links)
Process based approaches to environmentally sustainable logistics performancemanagement are lacking within organizations that buy logistics services (buyers) and thatsell logistics services (LSPs), which puts a damper on environmentally sustainablelogistics performance. Organizations understand the potential of environmentallysustainable logistics performance management, but they seems unable to developeffective management processes and accurate environmentally sustainable logisticsmetrics. An environmentally sustainable logistics performance management process(ESLPM process) is one way for an organization to manage its performance in line withits environmental strategy and overall environmental targets. The purpose of this thesis is to adapt the logistics performance management process toinclude environmental sustainability. The first research question is about thecharacteristics for including environmentally sustainable logistics in the logisticsperformance management process. Characteristics that need to be included in the logisticsperformance management process must be identified in order to illustrate the process, inorder to improve the environmental performance. Moreover, by identifying thecharacteristics of the process activities, it is possible to compare how the characteristicsof the process are similar and/or different between organizations. The performancemanagement process can only be used successfully if the strategy is closely aligned tosome process activities being implemented; this motivates the second research question, which is how the ESLPM process can be expanded to measure alignment. The method used to collect empirical data is primarily interviews in eight multiple-casestudies of four organizations buying logistics services and four organizations sellinglogistics services. The frame of reference is based on the inclusion of environmentalsustainability characteristics in the logistics performance management process and thealignment between process and strategy as well as within processes. The results include a description of an ESLPM process that contains five activities withseventeen characteristics for managing environmentally sustainable logistics. Specificcontexts of eight organizations, like type (private, public, or private/public) and size(small, medium, or large) and their influence and implications concerning the ESLPMprocess are discussed and presented. The matching between the theoretical ESLPMprocess (based on the frame of reference) and the empirical ESLPM process is presentedand then compared within the eight organizations, resulting in a modified ESLPM processwith twenty characteristics. The results shows that the use of an ESLPM process is stillin beginning stages and is not done in a structured manner; in particular, the organizationsfind it difficult to establish appropriate ESLP metrics, to define the ESLP metrics, to setaccurate ESLP targets, and to collect and measure the ESLP metrics. Results from measuring level of alignment include theoretical measurement models fortwo types of alignment, a model for measuring alignment between process and strategy,as well as a model for measuring alignment within a process. The two theoretical modelscontain different aspects that measure alignment on three different levels (high, medium, low). These models are tested within each organization, and the results from measuringlevel of alignment per organization is used to evaluate the two theoretical models, resulting in modified models for measuring alignment. The results lead to increased understanding of how type and size influence thecharacteristics of the ESLPM process and the level of alignment. The results also contribute to the literature on environmentally sustainable logistics performancemanagement and the alignment both between process and strategy as well as within theESLPM process. The result can be used by organizations selling and buying logisticsservices to improve their environmentally sustainable logistics performance.

Sustainability and Logistics Organizations in Sweden

Malik, Zeeshan January 2019 (has links)
Sweden is an eco-modernist society where environmental, social and economic growth support each other. It is an industrialized country where the trade via road has tremendously increased. Road freight is a fundamental issue of sustainability because it is environmentally, socially and economically very challenging to move the product from the origin to end user. In addition to road freight, all components of logistics system are necessary to take into account in order to move the product form the origin to consumer. All logistics components have environmental, social and economic impact because there is a relationship between sustainability and organizational activities. In this dissertation, by using inductive approach, it has been analyzed that how the logistics organizations in Sweden are dealing with sustainability issues. The practices of the companies related to environmental sustainability and social sustainability are effective, technically feasible and economically viable. Organizations are working on the behalf of their sustainable integrated business plan that is simultaneously valuable for the environment, people and for the company itself in terms of profitability. For the firms, sustainable integrated business plan means that their strategies to earn profit reflect the environmental and social sustainability as well. The both environmental and social strategies are actually the regulators of the value chain of the organization with a vision to get profitability. These strategies engender the proficiency and competency into the company to remain profitable and competitive in the market. Doing business in a way that the society and the environment would not be harmed is actually economically beneficial for the organization because it actually helps the organization in reducing its cost. Each pillar of sustainability is important to sustain another pillar. Economic sustainability is important to improve environmental and social sustainability however, environmental and social sustainability are the key to achieve economic sustainability. Above all, it has been found that economic sustainability is not only dependent upon environment and society but also on the target market, business trend and other measures. Some futuristic concerns of the organizations regarding sustainability have also been found and all organizations are determinant to achieve more sustainability on the basis of those futuristic concerns.

Sediqi, Bahram, Ramli, Syamsulbahri January 2016 (has links)
Introduction- The environmental variant of Supply Chain Management, also known as the Green supply chain management, aims to minimize or eliminate negative environmental impacts.  Unnecessary transports are a negative environmental aspect and means negative environmental impact. Although transports affect the environment, there is little research on the relationship between transport and Green supply chain management. The purpose of the study is therefore to design a strategy for achieving Green supply chain management and reduce unnecessary transport with a focus on uncertainty, variability and transparency. Method- To enable the answering of purpose, a case study conducted with the help of literature and a case company. Results- The case company is negatively affected by uncertainty, variety, and also by a lack of transparency in the supply chain. Unnecessary transportations through recalls are created because of quality defects. This creates obstacles for a supply chain management strategy to be more effective. A systematic approach by Plan-Do-Check-Act can help the case company to create a stable basis and achieve green supply chain management. It is necessary to conduct Plan-Do-Check-Act with good communication in order to create transparency, prevent uncertainty and variation. Green supply chain management can be achieved through a combination of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and Lean. These parts should be conducted with PDCA, which can reduce unnecessary transportation.

A framework for implementing the VMI model in an MRO partnership

Altabba, Abdulrahman, Karlsson, Lina January 2016 (has links)
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of implementing the Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) model in an MRO (maintenance, repair, and operations) partnership, and highlight its potential economic, environmental, and organizational benefits, as well as limitations. Approach - First, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on fields relevant to VMI. Second, empirical data was gathered from a single exploratory case study with Momentum Industrial, and its customer Stora Enso. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from the case companies. Findings - Results suggest that VMI results in benefits for the supply chain in general, such as reduced administration and inventory costs, improved service levels, reduced information distortion, and improved relationship among partners. For the particular case of VMI in an MRO partnership, improved service levels can be obtained by a reduced risk of production downtime for the customer. Moreover, the implementation of VMI has potential environmental benefits, such as reduced paper use, and higher transportation fill rate. Limitations of implementing VMI include the difficulty in system integration, and information sharing. Trust could be a potential issue that limits information sharing amongst supply chain partners. Moreover, the difference in organizational cultures and policies of partners should be taken into consideration. Limitations - The study is limited to opinions from one MRO customer in the paper and packaging industry. Even though the questions asked to informants in Momentum and Stora Enso tackled benefits to MRO customers in general, a broader image could have been achieved by interviewing customers from different industries. Moreover, the case companies do not currently adopt VMI in their partnership, so the case study results are based on what they think would be the potential benefits and limitations of implementing VMI in an MRO partnership. Practical Implications - This paper can serve as a guideline for logistics managers who are considering VMI in an MRO partnership specifically, as it provides them with the benefits and limitations associated with VMI. More generally, any company considering VMI can also benefit from the theoretical framework presented.

A utilização do plano de gestão de logística sustentável como ferramenta de gestão: um olhar dos servidores da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria / Use of sustainable logistics management plan with management tool: a look from Santa Maria Federal University servants.

Gazzoni, Fernando 19 December 2014 (has links)
The sustainable logistics management plan was established by Decree 7746 of June 5, 2012, and with it all federal institutions were required to prepare logistic plans having sustainable development as the main point. For the success of this plan it is necessary to be incorporated into the organizational practices of each public administration servant. In the face of this situation and aiming to insert the plan and sustainable variable in UFSM organizational environment, the creation of action plans as main objective was defined. So we used a questionnaire to diagnose the profile of UFSM servants, assess the level of knowledge regarding sustainable issues and identify aspects considered the most important ones for the development of action plans. Besides, interviews were conducted with the setting-up committee of the PLS in UFSM in order to obtain a deepening of the process of design and its implementation. The results showed that the servants, regardless of individual factors, generally have a low level of knowledge on topics related to sustainability in public administration. Issues related to the development of sustainable construction projects, the realization of rational consumption campaigns and the re-use of materials were the main points raised by respondents as suggestions for preparing action plans. Later, the strengths and weaknesses in the organizational environment were identified in order to explore these aspects in planning actions. In the preparation of plans the aspects of the inclusion of them in the work routine had priority and enabled an initial discussion on the subject, as the level of knowledge is not satisfactory and it is essential to move forward on this discussion.

Framtagning av upphängningssystem till en robot / Development of suspension systems for a robot

Yacoub, Gebran, Abdul Ahad, Nibour January 2021 (has links)
With the continuous automation and the global goals that aim to more environmentally friendly and greener society, the company TerraGo Deliveries was formed with purpose of minimizing greenhouse gas emissions in large cities through more sustainable logistics. Their goal is to build a robot that delivers food from restaurants and shops to customers. The robot will go on the pavement at peoples’ speed to reduce traffic in the lanes. Usually, the delivery goes through drivers who drive cars or scooters that cause more gas emissions and more congestion in traffic as well as the risk of accidents. This project involves developing a suspension system for the first prototype of the TerraGo Deliveries robot, which is six-wheel drive. The new system will be able to go on gravel roads and climb on the curbs without any problem. To reach at the final design, the project has been divided into several different phases that consist of fact collection for suspension systems for different vehicles and robots, sketches, mechanical calculations, CAD-modeling, 3D-printing, reality tests, concept development and material selection. The CAD program Creo Parametric 5.0 has been used to create 3D models for the various concepts. And the program Granta EduPack, which is an engineering material database, has been a tool for material selection. In addition, renderings of the final design have been performed using KeyShot 10 to show how it will look like in reality. The result will present the suspension system as a 3D-model that shows how it will solve the problems, which are introduced in the report, with the assembly instructions. The choice of material for the system ends up on the aluminum alloy SS 4212–06.

Silva, Welington Matias dos Santos January 2017 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / The increasing socio-environmental demands are leading the researchers to study the applications of logistics for sustainability. This has given rise to the concept of sustainable supply chain management, which leads to a more holistic view of the supply chain. The lifecycle management of electrical and electronic equipment is part of this context, due to the increasing need for collection and treatment of waste from these devices. Mobile telephones are among the electronics, whose life cycle management is more challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of geoprocessing techniques in the sustainable management of the supply chain of mobile telephony devices in Brazil. In order to do so, the study adopted the following methods: a qualitative bibliographical review on the main themes of the work; Deepened the analysis of the literature on mobile handsets, through a quantitative bibliographic review; Studied the project of management of electrical and electronic residues, denominated "Descarte ON", implanted in the city of São Paulo; Elaborated a conceptual map that allows visualization of processes characteristic of a web-gis system focused on the life cycle of the devices studied here. It has been demonstrated that, mainly in Brazil, there are few studies on the sustainable management of the supply chain. As for mobile telephones, there is a similar problem, and there are few Brazilian studies that indicate approaches to address the particularities of the logistics channel in question. The results of the quantitative research on telephones show that the waste management of these devices is still incipient throughout the world. Some of the limitations of waste management programs are the low degree of integration among members of this supply chain, the lack of initiatives for end-user engagement; And, the logistic problems related to the collection of the post consumer appliances. The analysis on the "Descarte ON" project showed that, although it has innovative aspects and potential for success, the information provided indicates that this project has similar flaws to those observed in similar initiatives. Finally, the conceptual map proposed in the study demonstrates that a web-gis system has a strong potential to integrate the actors involved in the logistics chain of mobile telephony devices and also to minimize the current limitations of the reverse logistics programs aimed at these devices.

Comportamento ecológico da comunidade escolar do colégio militar de Santa Maria / Behaviour community ecological school of colégio militar de Santa Maria

Pavão, Alexandre Cardoso 26 April 2016 (has links)
The present study sought to demonstrate the importance of getting knowledge related to ecological behavior shown by members of Colégio Militar de Santa Maria (CMSM) as a manner to reduce the waste of resources and as guidance to establish the Sustainable Logistics Plan (SLP) in that institution. Objective: describe how has been shown the ecological behavior into the CMSM in order to define the basis for the SLP with the purpose of reducing the consumption of resources and materials. Methodology: the study was conducted based on exploratory analysis of secondary data and descriptive analysis involving collect, presentation and discussion of primary data. Two different instruments were adopted to collect the data, a questionnaire filled out by CMSM employees including questions about ecological behavior, consumption habits in the workplace and level of knowledge about public policies directed to sustainability, and a second questionnaire was applied considering the Ecological Behavior Scale of Pato and Tamayo in order to measure the ecological behavior of CMSM students. The results revealed that employees, regardless individual factors, have a low level of knowledge related to sustainability subjects in the public administration, besides keeping a behavior that produces waste of energy and resources. The CMSM students revealed a reasonable knowledge about the concept of sustainability, but, in general, have low predisposition to environmental activism and have shown behaviors that are not connected with proactive ecological behavior. The main conclusion from the analysis of ecological behavior into the CMSM community was the lack of mechanisms to foster environmental education, not just aimed at the school curriculum but also broadly between students and employees of that institution. The proposed guidance within this dissertation will work as a guideline to create a Sustainable Logistics Plan to put in place all actions required to align the ecological behavior of CMSM to the concept of Sustainable Development.
