Master’s thesis “Representation of national culture in Armenian publishing industry” consists of two chapters. First chapter examines definitions essential to the research; characterizes major book market participants in Armenia; defines key trends in Armenian publishing industry. Second chapter is devoted to the analysis of publications issued by Armenian publishing houses; identification of means of representation of national culture in Armenian publishing industry and publications, such as content methods related to choosing particular topics – about history, Armenian culture, genocide, publications for diaspora, translated editions adapted for Armenian realities; visual and printing methods – design of translated and Armenian publications, which use national ornaments, national costumes, household items not only as informative illustrations, but also as book design elements not related directly to description of ornaments, costumes etc. Bibliography consists of 86 source materials. / Магистерская диссертация «Репрезентация национальной культуры в книгоиздании Армении» состоит из двух глав. В первой главе рас-сматриваются понятия, необходимые для исследования; характеризуются основные участники книжного рынка Армении; определяются ключевые тенденции книгоиздания Армении. The Program of the Czech Decadent Movement and the Question of Intertextuality. The Work of Miloš Marten This thesis explores the work of Miloš Marten (1883-1917) seeking to analyse its decadent narrative as a modern narrative that brings into play the unity between the pinnacle and the decline. It departs from the comparison between the style and interpretation of the two versions of Cyklus rozkoše a smrti (orig. The Cycle of delight and death; 1907 and 1917/1925) and the study of the realisations of this work. For this purpose the study contextually examines the conceptions of "intertextuality" from fin de siècle authors-critics, meaning their conceptualisations of similarity and/or identity of literary works which frequently involve a confluence of degeneration theory, the argument of the non-ethical nature of plagiarism and theory of decadence. All were often used as instruments of disqualification as well as justifications for a modern aesthetics and style. 3D laser scanning as a tool for Viking Age studies

Three-dimensional (3D) laser scanners are becoming increasingly more affordable and user-friendly, making 3D-modeling tools more widely available to researchers in various countries and disciplines. In archaeology, 3D-modeling has the particular advantages of facilitating the documentation and analysis of objects that are fragile, rare, and often difficult to access. We have previously shown that 3D-modeling is a highly useful tool for shape analysis of archaeological bone material, due to the high measurement accuracy inherent in the latest generation of 3D laser scanners (Sholts et al. 2010; 2011). In this work, we explore the utility of 3D-modeling as a tool for Viking Age artefact analysis. To test the usefulness of 3D-modeling when analyzing artefacts with a very complex morphology, we chose highly ornate Viking Age baroque shaped brooches as study objects. These baroque shaped brooches constitute a group of dress ornaments mainly encountered in eastern Viking Age Scandinavia. Due to their large cast and/or attached bosses they obtain an almost baroque appearance, hence their name (cf. Jansson 1984: p. 81). They appear in two major versions, i.e. circular or equal armed, and in two kinds of material, i.e. silver- and copper-based alloys. Because of the position of bronze brooches in burial contexts, it appears they were used to fasten the cape or shawl in the female dress (cf. Jansson 1984: p. 75ff., Aagård 1984: p. 96ff.; Neiß 2006, figs. 3, 4; Capelle 1962: p. 106). For the present work a recently excavated brooch from Denmark was analyzed, together with three Russian brooches with nearly iconic status in the field of Viking Age studies. In the three case studies, we investigated possible uses of 3D-modeling for artefact analysis, artefact reconstruction, and tool mark and motif analysis. Exploring the usefulness of 3D-modeling for these purposes allowed us to draw conclusions regarding how 3D-analysis can be best incorporated into future artefact analysis. The lost Venetian church of Santa Maria Assunta dei Crociferi : form, decoration, and patronage

This dissertation reconstructs the original form and sixteenth-century decoration of the lost Venetian church of Santa Maria Assunta dei Crociferi, destroyed after the suppression of the Crociferi in 1656 to make way for the present church of the Gesuiti. The destruction of the church, the scattering of its contents, and the almost total lack of documentation of the religious order for which the space was built, has obscured our understanding of the many works of art it once contained, produced by some of the most important Venetian artists of the sixteenth century. This project seeks to correct scholarly neglect of this important church, and to restore context and meaning to these objects by reconstructing their original placement in the interest of a collective interpretation. Various types, patterns and phases of patronage at the church—monastic, private and corporate—are discussed to reveal interconnections between these groups, and to highlight to role of the Crociferi as architects of a sophisticated decorative programme that was designed to respond to the latest artistic trends, and to visually demonstrate their adherence to orthodoxy at a moment of religious upheaval and reform.

Dans le cadre du projet de « maintenir ou accroître l'habitabilité du monde » (Ezio Manzini, 1991), nous interrogeons la manière de penser l’habiter par le design, qui rencontre de notre point de vue la question des enveloppes de l'homme, artificielles versus biologiques, matérielles versus virtuelles. Le cas de l’habit, hypothétique enveloppe habitable dérivée du vêtement, première architecture selon Gottfried Semper et le « principe du revêtement », retient tout particulièrement notre attention. Le sujet est abordé par une théorisation située à partir d’un projet expérimental personnel de conception et fabrication d’enveloppes textiles, qui attesta d’une rationalité et d’une expansivité tout à fait singulières. Son étude est conduite par une méthode poïétique, au sens de Paul Valéry, qui combine une étude herméneutique des productions, une exégèse de la nature systémique de la démarche (programme et émergences), ainsi qu’une exégèse complémentaire du travail technique en actes (facture et irrégularités). La transdisciplinarité inhérente à la problématique est ainsi envisagée à partir de la pensée de l’art textile de Semper, la pensée poétique et épistémologique de Valéry, et la pensée esthétique complexe issue des sciences du vivant. La construction théorique nous emporte à suggérer, en regard de l’habitabilité, la perspective d’un nouveau paradigme, la textilité. / In context of the project intended to « maintain or increase the habitability of the world » (Ezio Manzini, 1991), we question the way of thinking the dwelling by design, which meets, according to us, the question of human envelopes, artificial versus biological, material versus virtual. The case of the habit, hypothetical inhabitable envelope derived from garment, primary architecture according to Gottfried Semper and the “theory of clothing”, particularly focuses our attention. The subject is approached by a situated theorizing from a personal experimental project of conception and manufacture of textile envelopes, which demonstrated a rationality and expansiveness quite singular. The study is leaded by a poïetic method, as defined by Paul Valéry, combining an hermeneutical study of production, an exegesis of the systemic nature of the process (program and emergences), and an additional exegesis of the technical work through the acts (craft and irregularities). The inherent transversality of the problem is thus considered with means of the thought of textile art of Semper, the poetic and epistemological thought of Valéry, and the complex aesthetic thought outcome from of the life sciences. The theoretical construction takes us to suggest, in comparison with the one of habitability, the way to a new paradigm of textility.

Art, devotion and patronage at Santa Maria dei Carmini, Venice : with special reference to the 16th-Century altarpieces

This study is an art history of Santa Maria dei Carmini, Venice, from its foundation in c. 1286 to the present day, with a special focus on the late Renaissance period (c. 1500-1560). It explores a relatively overlooked corner of Renaissance Venice and provides an opportunity to study the Carmelite Order's relationship to art. It seeks to answer outstanding questions of attribution, dating, patronage, architectural arrangements and locations of works of art in the church. Additionally it has attempted to have a diverse approach to problems of interpretation and has examined the visual imagery's relationship to the Carmelite liturgy, religious function and later interpretations of art works. Santa Maria dei Carmini was amongst the largest basilicas in Venice when it was completed and the Carmelites were a major international order with a strong literary tradition. Their church in Venice contained a wealth of art works produced by one of the most restlessly inventive generations in the Western European tradition. Chapter 1 outlines a history of the Carmelites, their hagiography and devotions, which inform much of the discussion in later chapters. The second Chapter discusses the early history of the Carmelite church in Venice, establishing when it was founded, and examining the decorative aspects before 1500. It demonstrates how the tramezzo and choir-stalls compartmentalised the nave and how these different spaces within the church were used. Chapter 3 studies two commissions for the decoration of the tramezzo, that span the central period of this thesis, c. 1500-1560. There it is shown that subjects relevant to the Carmelite Order, and the expected public on different sides of the tramezzo were chosen and reinterpreted over time as devotions changed. Cima da Conegliano's Adoration of the Shepherds (c. 1511) is discussed in Chapter 4, where the dedication of the altar is definitively proven and the respective liturgy is expanded upon. The tradition of votive images is shown to have influenced Cima's representation of the donor. In Chapter 5 Cima's altarpiece for the Scuola di Sant'Alberto's altar is shown to have been replaced because of the increasing ambiguity over the identification of the titulus after the introduction of new Carmelite saints at the beginning of the century. Its compositional relationship to the vesperbild tradition is also examined and shown to assist the faithful in important aspects of religious faith. The sixth chapter examines the composition of Lorenzo Lotto's St Nicholas in Glory (1527-29) and how it dramatises the relationship between the devoted, the interceding saints and heaven. It further hypothesises that the inclusion of St Lucy is a corroboration of the roles performed by St Nicholas and related to the confraternity's annual celebrations in December. The authorship, date and iconography of Tintoretto's Presentation of Christ (c. 1545) is analysed in Chapter 7, which also demonstrates how the altarpiece responds to the particular liturgical circumstances on the feast of Candlemas. The final chapter discusses the church as a whole, providing the first narrative of the movement of altars and development of the decorative schemes. The Conclusion highlights the important themes that have developed from this study and provides a verdict on the role of ‘Carmelite art' in the Venice Carmini.

This project report offers an in-depth, detailed account of my creative process and work during my two-year Master in visual communication at Konstfack, Stockholm. My degree project is a celebration of plurality and visual democracy. Starting with identifying different norms pervading the graphic design discipline in the Western world today, both in terms of aesthetic values and systems of thinking, I have worked to propose and visualize alternative possible futures.  Drawing has been my main carrier through an intense journey of un-learning and re-learning resulting in an artist’s book in unique copy.  With this book, I want to problematize the dominant discourses around objectivity as a utopian ideal with a suppressive agenda, while visualizing a world I can recognize myself in. I have used decoration as a method, emotion and femininity as explorative standpoints, giving space to the metaphorical, the ambiguous and the spiritual to challenge current visual norms.  This book emerges as an affirmation of my own quest for visual belonging  as a graphic designer and a woman; a testimony of the practice of drawing as actualized power.
