The role of Chiefs as characters in Matsepe's novels : An appraisal

Segooa, Maite Stella January 2004 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (African languages)) --University of Limpopo, 2004. / In this research an attempt has been made to assess, evaluate and examine the role of chiefs as characters in Matsepe's novels. The need for this study was found to be necessary because no in-depth study of the role of chiefs in Matsepe's novels has as yet been undertaken. This study demonstrates how Matsepe portrays chiefs as characters in his novels, what their duties are and how they help in developing his themes.

Effect of Polyethylene glycol 4000 supplementation on the performance of the indigenous Pedi goats fed different levels of Acacia nilotica leaf meal and Ad libitum buffalo grass hay.

Motubatse, Moakgosweng Robby January 2006 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc. (Agriculture)) --University of Limpopo, 2006 / Two experiments were carried out to determine the effect of the level of Acacia nilotica leaf meal supplementation plus 23 g polyethylene glycol 4000 on diet intake, digestibility, and growth rate of indigenous Pedi goats fed ad libitum Buffalo grass, Buchloe dactyloides, hay. The first experiment lasted for 37 days, with the first 30 days being for adaptation and the last 7 days being for collection. Twenty yearling male Pedi goats weighing 22 ± 0.5 kg live weight were allocated to 4 treatments in a 2 x 2 Factorial arrangement in a Completely Randomised Design. Acacia nilotica leaf meal contained 120 g crude protein per kg DM, indicating its potential as a browse source for ruminants. It, also, contained high amounts of total phenolics (2.04 % DM) and low amounts of condensed tannins, both extracted (0.37 % DM) and unextracted (1.83 % DM). Increasing the level of Acacia nilotica leaf meal supplementation to 120 g increased (P<0.05) crude protein intake (38 g/kg DM) when compared to 80 g supplementation (34 g/kg DM). Supplementation with 23 g PEG 4000 increased (P<0.05) the crude protein intake where goats were supplemented with 120 g of A. nilotica leaf meal. However, PEG 4000 supplementation did not have an effect (P>0.05) on intake when goats were supplemented with 80 g of Acacia nilotica leaf meal. Supplementation with 120 g of Acacia nilotica leaf meal increased (P<0.05) diet digestibility of DM (0.57), OM (0.60) and CP (0.71) by the goats. Similarly, supplementation with 23 g PEG 4000 increased (P<0.05) DM (0.65), OM (0.66) and v CP digestibilities (0.76) where goats were supplemented with 120 g of A. nilotica leaf meal. Polyethylene glycol 4000 also increased (P<0.05) diet CP digestibility where goats were supplemented with 80 g of Acacia nilotica leaf meal. However, 23 g PEG 4000 did not have a significant (P>0.05) effect on diet digestibility of DM and OM where goats were supplemented with 80 g of Acacia nilotica leaf meal. In vivo NDF and ADF digestibility were not affected by the treatments. Level of Acacia nilotica leaf meal supplementation plus 23 g of PEG 4000 had a significant (P<0.05) effect on the daily live weight change of the goats. The effect was higher where goats were supplemented with 120 g of A. nilotica leaf meal when compared to 80 g supplementation. Blood urea concentrations were improved (P<0.05) by level of A. nilotica supplementation and PEG supplementation. It is concluded that PEG 4000 has the potential to improve the feeding value of Acacia nilotica leaf meal and can, therefore, be used in the feeding systems for ruminant animals. The second experiment determined the effect of A. nilotica leaf meal supplementation and PEG 4000 supplementation on in vitro diet digestibility. Level of Acacia nilotica leaf meal supplementation plus 23 g PEG supplementation improved (P<0.05) in vitro diet DM, OM and CP digestibilities where 120 g Acacia nilotica leaf meal was supplemented. Similarly, 23 g PEG 4000 supplementation also improved (P<0.05) in vitro diet CP digestibility where 80 g Acacia nilotica leaf meal was supplemented. However, level of A. nilotica supplementation plus PEG 4000 supplementation had no vi effect (P>0.05) on in vitro NDF and ADF digestibilities. In vivo diet DM, OM and CP digestibilities were positively and significantly (P<0.05) correlated with in vitro diet DM, OM and CP digestibilities. It is, therefore, concluded that in vitro diet DM, OM and CP digestibilities have good capacity to predict in vivo diet DM, OM and CP digestibilities. / National Research Foundation. Exploration of geometrical concepts involved in the traditional circular buildings and their relationship to classroom learning

Seroto, Ngwako January 2006 (has links)
Thesis (M.Ed. (Mathematics)) --University of Limpopo, 2013 / Traditionally, mathematics has been perceived as objective, abstract, absolute and universal subject that is devoid of social and cultural influences. However, the new perspective has led to the perceptions that mathematics is a human endeavour, and therefore it is culture-bound and context-bound. Mathematics is viewed as a human activity and therefore fallible. This research was set out to explore geometrical concepts involved in the traditional circular buildings in Mopani district of Limpopo Province and relate them to the classroom learning in grade 11 classes. The study was conducted in a very remote place and a sample of two traditional circular houses from Xitsonga and Sepedi cultures was chosen for comparison purposes because of their cultural diversity. The questions that guided my exploration were: • Which geometrical concepts are involved in the design of the traditional circular buildings and mural decorations in Mopani district of the Limpopo Province? • How do the geometrical concepts in the traditional circular buildings relate to the learning of circle geometry in grade 11 class? The data were gathered through my observations and the learners’ observations, my interviews with the builders and with the learners, and the grade 11 learners’ interaction with their parents or builders about the construction and decorations of the traditional circular houses. I used narrative configurations to analyse the collected data. Inductive analysis, discovery and interim analysis in the field were employed during data analysis. From my own analysis and interpretations, I found that there are many geometrical concepts such as circle, diameter, semi-circle, radius, centre of the circle etc. that are involved in the design of the traditional circular buildings. In the construction of these houses, these concepts are involved from the foundation of the building to the roof level. All these geometrical concepts can be used by both educators and learners to enhance the teaching and learning of circle geometry. Further evidence emerged that teaching with meaning and by relating abstract world to the real world makes mathematics more relevant and more useful.

Mobility, Sitting Posture and Reaching Movements in Children with Myelomeningocele

Norrlin, Simone January 2003 (has links)
<p>Children with myelomeningocele (MMC) usually have problems with daily life activities, but the background to their problems is not altogether obvious. An understanding of the possible causes of activity problems is a prerequisite for the effectiveness of physical therapy. The overall aim of the present studies was to identify impairments above the cele level, which might influence mobility in children with MMC (study I) and to analyse sitting posture (study II) and the movement characteristics of reaching movements (study III and IV). </p><p>In total, 41 children and young adults with MMC and without mental retardation were investigated. Study I comprised 32 children, 6-11 years. Mobility and the caregiver assistance required for mobility were quantified according to the Paediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) and correlation between mobility and neurological impairment, hand function and cognitive function were calculated. The results showed that nine children achieved independent mobility and that there was a moderate and significant correlation between the need for physical assistance and high cele level, impaired hand function and impaired cognitive function. In those children who used a wheelchair, only poor hand strength was significantly correlated with the need for caregiver assistance.</p><p>Study II comprised 11 children, 10-13 years, and a control group of 20 healthy children. Sitting posture was investigated by using a force plate and analysed from the frequency and the amplitude of the postural sway. The reaction forces before and during rapid arm lift were also analysed. The result showed that children with MMC had significantly lower sway frequency compared to the controls. In both groups, the ground reaction forces were registered before the children lifted their arms. Study III and IV comprised 31 children and young adults, 9-19 years and 31 matched controls. Reaching movements were investigated with a digitising tablet, linked to a computer. The ability to program and execute reaching movements was analysed and also the ability to adapt reaching to new visuomotor conditions. The results showed that the MMC group had poorer precision, less straight movements and shorter deceleration phases as compared to the controls. In both groups the movements were pre-programmed. In addition, adaptation of reaching to new visuomotor conditions was poor in the MMC group as compared to the controls. </p><p>In conclusion we found that impairments above the cele level influenced mobility and the control of sitting posture in children with MMC. Reduced precision and co-ordination of reaching, and also difficulties with motor adaptation, could partly explain thier problems with hand activities. These findings need to be considered in therapy programs for children and young adults with MMC.</p>

Evangelization by Pentecostals among the poor and marginalized Pedi communities in the Limpopo province : a critical survey of their performance in the light of comprehensive redemption.

Shoroma, Emmanuel Modibe. January 2003 (has links)
Pentecostalism is well known for its active involvement in evangelism. But it is true to say as well that questions have been asked about the social upliftment dimension of the Pentecostal mission. This study will focus on the Assemblies of God church. The main reason for this is that, of all the Pentecostal churches in South Africa, the Assemblies of God has probably had the biggest impact in the rural black communities. To undertake the study I will do the following: • Outline the problem that necessitated commencement of this study, formulate hypotheses and identify methods of research in this first chapter. • Attempt, in chapter two, to outline the historical background of the Pentecostal mission in general and the AOG in particular, describing its theology and evangelism and their impact on the socio-political situation in South Africa. • Conduct in-depth Case Studies, in chapter three, of a range of individuals who are converts of the AOG mission. • The fourth chapter will ask whether the Redemption and lift hypothesis throws any light on the study. • The last chapter will consider how other theological models consider the issue of mission. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2003.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of cancer among children and adolescents. The sophistication of the diagnostic and therapeutic processes has promoted an increase in survival and reduction of relapse of the disease. The inclusion of prophylactic CNS therapy, performed through chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, has been identified as essential for therapeutic success, but it seems to be related to the emergence of late neuropsychological effects in about 30% of survivors. Studies suggest that changes in specific cognitive domains contribute to the decline of intellectual functioning and academic difficulties presented by this clinical population. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the neuropsychological and academic aspects of children and adolescents who survived ALL. The research was divided into four studies: 1) The intellectual functioning of children and adolescents diagnosed with ALL; 2) Attention and executive functions in pediatric survivors of ALL; 3) Translation and adaptation of the Deasy-Spinetta Behavioral Questionnaire (DSBQ); 4) Investigation of academic aspects in children and adolescents diagnosed with ALL. 26 children and adolescents surviving ALL who underwent chemotherapy (clinical group), 26 healthy children and adolescents (control group), 26 parents and 46 teachers took part in this study. The neuropsychological evaluation protocol included the following domains: intellectual functioning, attention, memory, executive functions, academic abilities and behavioral aspects. The results were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistical tools. In study 1, the clinical group performed significantly lower than the control group. Maternal low schooling was associated with lower performance in verbal, nonverbal and global intellectual functioning. The younger age at diagnosis was correlated with low verbal domain, global intellectual capacity and working memory, and the latter was also associated with longer treatment completion time. Study 2 evidenced significantly lower performance of the clinical group in attention and executive functions, especially in the subgroup of children diagnosed before the age of five. The results of study 3 suggested that the DSBQ has an apparent or face validity, being a readily usable instrument. In study 4 the clinical group presented lower results in arithmetic, text comprehension and storage processes, learning evolution and information retrieval. Specific difficulties of school functioning were associated predominantly with the child's lower age at diagnosis. It is hoped that the knowledge produced by this study may contribute to the development of programs aimed at the reinsertion of the school and the elaboration of public policies for this clinical population, as well as the accomplishment of future studies in neuropsychology of development and learning.

Opermann, Camila Zanette January 2014 (has links)
Introduction: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosome abnormalities among humans. The functional development of the child with the syndrome is impaired by neuromotor, musculoskeletal, cardiac abnormalities that characterize among others. Objectives: To compare the functional performance of Down syndrome (DS) children with that of children with typical development (TD) from two to seven years of age, from the city of Porto Alegre and its metropolitan area. To investigate the influence of family characteristics and pathologies in the functional development of children and their larger deficits. Methods: Observational study with cross-sectional design with convenience sampling. We used the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) to compare the functional development of the two groups of children. The groups were also compared by age, using age ranges of one year and six months. A questionnaire was used to assess family characteristics and pathologies associated with children. Results: Participants were 95 children, 49 with DS and 46 with TD. The two groups displayed statistical differences in all areas of the PEDI analyzed, when compared together and also in comparisons involving age groups. Children with DS had scores lower than controls in all areas of the PEDI, except for caregiver assistance in the areas of mobility and social function. Family characteristics that influence the functional development were: mother's profession outside the home, level of parent education and school attendance. The presence of pathologies associated with the syndrome did not influence the functional performance in SD. Discussion/conclusion: Both the children with DS and those with TD had functional difficulties; however, for those with DS, the difficulties appeared in less complex activities. Cognitive limitations in the children with DS may have had an influence on the functional development. The profession of the mother outside the home and school attendance may have been favorable due to interaction with other people and children. Probably, with the advancement of cardiac surgery and other treatments associated pathologies did not influence children's development. It was found in this study that children with DS showed lower than expected functional development in all areas of the PEDI. When comparing the two groups and subgroups by age, children with DS and DT, it was observed that the differences remained even in old age. We cannot predict the development of children with DS; however, we can invest in their independence and quality of life.

Costa, Carolina Souza Neves da 08 April 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T20:19:14Z (GMT).
