Exploring a new radio audience : a podcast case study in public radio’s conversion from analog to digital audiencesAvila, Alexander J. 03 September 2009 (has links)
This thesis began as an audience exploration into early adopters of “podcasting” technology through the journalistic radio program Latino USA, distributed by National Public Radio. An explosion in the use of this new media has changed the way radio networks distribute programming, yet little communications research has been done about the audience. This examination documents how podcast audiences are significantly younger and are both
substituting and supplementing traditional media. The study also determined that iPod users are significantly more likely to abandon CDs, listen to less radio, and watch less television as the industry converts from 20th Century analog to 21st Century digital technology. Qualitatively speaking, the podcast audience is highly
regarded, but quantitatively small. Despite producer expectations that podcasting is the digital mass media of the future, the data shows audiences to have interpersonal connections to podcasting. As such podcasting remains niche programming and not a true mass medium. / text

Lives of White Dwarf StarsRicher, Harvey 17 March 2008 (has links)
White dwarf stars are the burnt out remnants that remain after a
star like the Sun has completed its nuclear evolution. In such a
star there are no remaining nuclear energy sources, so the star
evolves by simply radiating its stored thermal energy out into
space. This may seem rather uninteresting, but in fact there is a
wealth of physical phenomena that occur during this part of a
star's life - from getting kicked at birth, to neutrino emission
in early life, to some interesting high density physics, through
to functioning as precise clocks that can provide an age for some
of the oldest know stars in the Universe. Some of these phases
will be illustrated with detailed observations taken recently with
the Hubble Space Telescope.

The bright future of dark matter and dark energy searchesVan Waerbeke, Ludovic 11 April 2008 (has links)
Dark matter and dark energy clearly emerged from recent cosmological surveys as key ingredients of the Universe. Understanding their physical nature might be a way to unlock some of the mysteries in particle physics and General Relativity.
In this talk I will discuss how gravitational lensing will have a unique contribution in this endeavor. I will also discuss how
future weak lensing surveys, primarily designed to study dark matter and dark energy, will enable the detailed analysis of the physical processes underlying structure formation such as galaxies and clusters of galaxies.
Presented on April 10, 2008.

"I think it's a gentle kind of marketing" : - A critical discourse analysis of Content Marketing in podcasts.Ådell, Agnes, Bygdemark, Carina January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate in what way content marketing can be understood through podcasts as an alternative marketing tool. The material which the study was based on is Ölpodden, a podcast initiated by Carlsberg Sweden. The study intended to shed light on the interdiscursivity that emerges when brands are communicated through podcasts. Another aim was to understand how relationships and identities are constructed through the podcast by examining its intended audience. In order to achieve this a critical discourse analysis was used as both underlining theory and comprehensive method. The critical discourse analysis was also supplemented with two theorists witch highlights the audience’s construction of identity. The consumer's thoughts on Ölpodden was of importance to illustrate the convergence culture and the consumption of the podcast. Qualitative interviews were therefore used as a supplement to the critical discourse analysis. The purpose for the study was to contribute to an increased understanding of content marketing and a deeper knowledge of the communicative strategies it is based on. This purpose led to two main research questions containing two subquestions each. The first main question and subqueries were to answer on: How the discourse in Ölpodden could be understood and problematized in relation to convergence, commercialization and consumption culture, which the intended audience are and how groups and identities are created through the discourse. The other main question and subqueries were to answer on: How the discourse could be understood and problematized from a user perspective, in what way the discourse has impact on the listeners subjectivity and objectivity and how the recipients statements answers to a convergence culture. The result of the study indicates that the interdiscursivity in Ölpodden contains an entertainment discourse, a information discourse and a promotional discourse. Through these discourses the podcast aims to give beer a higher status in society. The podcast also creates an identity which the listener is expected to want to fit into. In the quest to fit into this identity individual's consumption patterns can change. Which ultimately would lead to increased gain for large concerns such as Carlsberg.

2012 was the year when the podcast had a breakthrough in Sweden. As media corporatehouses developed, they adopted new forms to mediate journalistic material, whereas the podcasts was one of them. The podcast has had a rather informal reputation in Sweden in contrary to The United States and Great Britain, where it holds a higher sense of prestige and professionalism. It is therefore relevant to investigate what happens when media corporatehouses i Sweden embraces the podcast through themes such as tabloidization, commercialism, convergence and divergence. We chose to investigate the content of the podcast in the tabloid press Aftonbladet, and in the serious press, Dagens Nyheter. We also compared the two to see if there is a difference in content when it comes to journalistic principles. Through a qualitative method we analyzed the podcasts with a framework consisting of different themes. By using a directed content analysis, we assumed from certain theories whilst staying open minded against unexpected themes. We discovered that while the podcast could be a form of journalism, it is a new way of mediating it. Podcasts from both newspapers were mainly commercialized and consisting of “soft news” as the journalists assumed a personal role. The form itself allows the content to be subjective and informal, whilst providing a forum for public debate, to inform and investigate. Although, most podcasts did not provide that. We believe that the podcast possibly will develop into a more professional product in Sweden, just as the blog in recent years, when adopted by media corporations.
