Blivande förstagångspappors tankar om att bli förälder

Papparollen har förändrats från att vara familjeförsörjare till mer aktivt deltagande i familjelivet, men det finns mer att göra för att uppnå en jämställd föräldraledighet. Tidigare forskning är grundade på pappors erfarenhet och tankar om den planerade föräldraledigheten. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka blivande förstagångspappors tankar om föräldraledighet, rollen som pappa och föräldrautbildning. Metod: Åtta blivande förstagångspappor intervjuades. Samtliga intervjuer spelades in digitalt, transkriberades och analyserades genom med hjälp av innehållsanalys. Resultat: Av intervjuerna framkom fyra kategorier; Förutsättningar att ta föräldraledighet, Jämställt föräldraskap, att vara pappa och förälder samt trygghet inför förlossningen. Samtliga pappor planerade att ta ut föräldraledighet men det var oklart för en del när det skulle ske. Sju av papporna nämner att amningen är den viktigaste faktorn till att mamman tar ut föräldraledighet under första tiden.  Utav åtta intervjuade pappor svarade fem att ekonomin var en avgörande faktor som föräldrarna tog hänsyn till när de planerade fördelningen av föräldraledigheten.  Det fanns en stor ambivalens till huruvida papporna ansåg att låsta månader var ett bra tillvägagångssätt för att uppnå en mer jämställd fördelning av föräldraledigheten. Papporna kunde se både negativa och positiva konsekvenser av de låsta månaderna. Den generella åsikten bland papporna var dock att de ville engagera sig i sina barn även om de inte har möjlighet att vara föräldralediga. Slutsats: Papporna vill ta föräldraledighet men de största hindren är den ekonomiska situationen och amningen som prioriteras under första tiden. Genom föräldraledigheten ansåg papporna att de kan knyta an till sina barn. / The father role has changed from being a breadwinner to taking a more active part in the family life, but there is still more to do before an equal parental leave is reached. Recent studies are based on fathers’ experiences and thoughts of the planned paternal leave. Objective: The aim of this study is to research soon-to-be fathers’ thoughts about the forthcoming parental leave, the father role and the parental education. Method: Eight soon-to-be fathers were interviewed. All interviews was digitally recorded, transcribed and analyzed with the help of content analysis. Results: From the interviews four different categories was found; Conditions to take parental leave, equal parenting, to be a father and a parent and feeling secure about the birth giving. All the interviewed fathers showed a desire to take parental leave but it was uncertain when they were going to do so. Seven of them refer to breastfeeding as the most important factor why the mother take parental leave in the beginning. Of eight interviewed fathers five of them responded that the negative change in their economy was a major factor in the distribution of the parental leave between the mother and father. There was a big ambivalence whether the fixed months is a good approach to reach a more equal distribution of the parental leave. The fathers saw both negative and positive consequences of the fixed months. However, the general opinion among the fathers was that they wanted to commit to their children, even if they were not able to take parental leave. Conclusion: Fathers wants to take parental leave, but the biggest obstacle is their economy and because the child was being breastfeed during the first period of time after birth. The fathers believed that through parental leave they would be able to connect to their children.

An Assessment of the Effect of a Short-Term Parent-Education Program Upon Parental Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Child Development, Learning, and Behavior

The purposes of this study were to determine the effect of a short-term parent-education program and to investigate the relationship between parents' knowledge of child development and parents' attitudes toward parent-child relationships. The basic problem under consideration was to assay whether the level of parental knowledge of child development principles makes a difference in the attitudes of the parent in the relationship. Hypothesis I predicted that subjects participating in the training sessions would exhibit a significant gain in knowledge of child development. An analysis of covariance determined the gain to be significant at the .01 level. Hypothesis II stated that a significant relationship would exist between the subjects' knowledge of the defined principles of child development and the subjects' attitudes toward parent-child interactions. A Pearson Product-Moment Correlation of the scores of experimental group and control group on the PARI and the cognitive test revealed a negative correlation of -0.1363. Thus, the second hypothesis that a significant relationship would exist had to be rejected. Hypothesis III projected that a significant difference would exist between the posttest attitudes of the participants of the experimental group and those of the control group. Analysis of covariance was used to determine the significance of the scores on the PARI between the experimental group and the control group. In combining the twenty-three subtests' scores into one score for each group, it must be reported that the test showed no significant differences between the posttest attitudes of the two groups; hence the third re search hypothesis must be rejected. However, analysis of covariance between the experimental and control groups on each of the twenty-three subscales revealed a significant difference in attitudes between the two groups on eleven of the twenty-three scales.

Assessing factors influencing student success at Mississippi's public universities as measured by bachelor's degree completion

Retention and matriculation are topics of heavy debate and inquiry in higher education as rising tuition costs, coupled with declining state support, have fueled the need for increased accountability. In Mississippi, few studies have been conducted that are unique to the public universities in the state in order to analyze success factors in higher education. The purpose of this study was to analyze these success factors at Mississippi’s public universities as measured by successful degree completion within a six-year time period. This study analyzed High School GPA, ACT Scores, Parental Income Levels, Parental Education Levels, Ethnicity, and Gender. Academic, demographic and socioeconomic data were gathered on two cohorts of resident first-time, full-time students attending a Mississippi Institution of Higher Learning. A total of 5,603 students were included in the study from the fall 2001 and 2002 semesters. Transfer students were not included in the study. A successful completer was defined as completing a bachelor’s degree within six-years of enrollment. Students still enrolled in the seventh year were not included. In addition, students seeking an Associate’s Degree were also not included. Descriptive statistics revealed that graduation rates fluctuated depending on high school GPA, ACT scores, income and parental education levels. The most significant differences in graduation rates occurred when analyzing high school GPA and income statistics. These findings were supported when logistic regression analysis was employed. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze these factors compared to graduation rates for the state, and by type of institution. In Mississippi, there are four regional universities and four research universities. High school GPA and parental income were significant predictors in all three models, while ACT was significant when analyzing data for the system. For research universities, the education level of the father was significant. For regional universities, ethnicity was a significant predictor. In all, universities should develop a deeper understanding of the socioeconomic background of students in order to ensure that proper scaffolding is in place to ensure successful matriculation.

Lo scopo di questo studio è quello di indagare e sviluppare gli standard delle pratiche educative della famiglia, attraverso una lettura critica, affrontando le modalità di acquisizione del "nome di famiglia", che posiziona e individualizza l'uomo nella società; abbiamo cercato di verificare se la presenza della telenovela ha uno spazio rappresentativo che incide sul quotidiano dei brasiliani, individuando le principali caratteristiche del formato della telenovela. Abbiamo anche cercato di capire se le famiglie sono culturalmente e socialmente influenzate, se la loro importanza e le proposte educative sono modificate dalle produzioni televisive ritratte quotidianamente. Rafforzando le trasformazioni attraverso i processi di globalizzazione, lo sforzo di comprenderle è una lotta epistemologica che ha provocato una proficua produzione teorica e un riconoscimento della comunicazione; l’ interdisciplinarietà o il paradigma della complessità come prospettiva analitica nell' affrontare i processi comunicativi attuali. Di fronte alla disseminazione di pratiche non educative, di propagazione di disvalori morali, di disuguaglianza delle classi sociali e della mancanza di struttura familiare, vi è una preoccupazione per le rappresentazioni familiari evidenziate nelle trame delle telenovelas, che ci fa riflettere sull’ azione pedagogica, nella quale questa tesi si fonda, in particolare per gli adulti-genitori spettatori. / The goal of this study is to investigate and to analyze the patterns of family educational practices through the critical reading, approaching the forms of acquisition of the "name of family", which situates and individualizes man in society; we aimed to verify if the existence of soap opera has representational space in the daily life of Brazilians, identifying the main characteristics of the format of the Brazilian TV soap opera. Strengthened, the transformations through the process of globalization, the effort to comprehend them is a epistemological fight which resulted in a fruitful theoretical production and in a recognition of communication as science which better expresses time; the interdisciplinary approach or the paradigm of complexity as perspective of analysis in the approach of the communicative processes of current days. In face of the disseminations of non-educative practices, transmissions of moral anti-values, the social inequality and the lack of family structure, there is a concern with the familiar representations showed in the plots of the soap operas, which makes us reflect about the pedagogical action, which supports this thesis, in particular the adults-parents who watch TV.

Longitudinal studies of executive and cognitive development after preterm birth

Stockholm Neonatal Project is a longitudinal population-based study of children born prematurely in 1988-93, with a very low birth weight (&lt;1500 g), who have been followed prospectively from birth through adolescence. A matched control group was recruited at age 5 ½ years. The overall aim was to investigate long-term developmental outcome, paying particular attention to executive functions (EF) in relation to degree of prematurity, birth weight and medical risks. Study I showed a disadvantage in visuo-motor development at 5 ½ years, especially among the preterm boys. Visuo-motor skills were highly related to IQ, and also to EF. In Study II, neuropsychological profiles typical of preterm children and term born children, respectively, were identified through cluster analysis. The general level of performance corresponded well with IQ, motor functions and parental education in both groups, but preterm children had overall lower results and exhibited greater variability across domains. Study III showed that extremely preterm birth (w. 23-27) per se poses a risk for cognitive outcome at age 18, particularly for EF, and that perinatal medical complications add to the risk. By contrast, adolescents born very preterm (w. 28-31) performed just as well as term-born controls in all cognitive domains. However, adolescents born moderately preterm (w. 32-36) and small for gestational age showed general cognitive deficits. Study IV found that cognitive development was stable over time, with parental education and EF at 5 ½ years as significant predictors for cognitive outcome at age 18. Among preterm children, perinatal medical risks and being small for gestational age had a continued negative impact on cognitive development from 5 ½ to 18 years. Study V demonstrated that neuropsychological scoring of Bender drawings, developed in study I, predicted cognitive outcome in adolescence, indicating that the method  may be useful in developmental screening around school entry. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 3: Manuscript. <p>Syftet med denna studie var att ta reda på nyblivna föräldrars tankar kring främst föräldraledighet, amning, föräldrautbildning, barn- och mödravården, med tyngdpunkt på vårdens roll och pappans delaktighet. Intervjuer genomfördes med 11 föräldrar och svaren analyserades och kategoriserades i teman. Resultatet visade att de allra flesta var nöjda med vården de hade fått från både MVC och BVC, men enskilda föräldrar var missnöjda med enstaka sköterskor de träffat. Informanterna var också nöjda med bemötandet, då båda föräldrarna kände sig delaktiga i samtalet med barnmorskan. Alla föräldrar ville vara hemma med sitt barn under någon period, vilket berodde på personliga skäl och en vilja att vara med sitt barn. Hos hälften av paren tog mamman ut största delen av föräldraledigheten. Orsaken till detta var i huvudsak amningen, men även ekonomiska orsaker spelade in. Att amning är en stark aspekt för vem som är föräldraledig först gäller fortfarande, och informanterna upplevde att det var något som även vården förespråkade starkt. Angående föräldrautbildningen tyckte alla föräldraparen att studiebesöket på förlossningen var det som gav mest, samt att få träffa andra blivande föräldrar. The participants felt that the child welfare center and the prenatal clinic strongly recommended breast-feeding which contributes to the fact that breast-feeding still is a key aspect in the decision on which parent who is going to stay at home with the child during the fist period. All of the parents thought that the visit to the delivery department was the best part during the parental education, they also appreciated meeting other people in the same situation. The general information given during the regular meetings were things that many of the participants already knew and could for that reason have been more detailed.</p>

School Segregation in Stockholm : Trends and Effects on Student Achievement

This study aims to give an overview of school segregation in Stockholm and its development during the period 2000 to 2010. Further, it aims to examine the effects of school segregation on student achievement. The first part of the study uses register data to measure segregation in schools from 2000 to 2010, the second part utilizes the Stockholm School Survey 2010 for measuring student demographics and school achievement. The examination of school segregation in Stockholm reveal a substantial segregation between schools, on both levels of non-native background and parental education. The trends have been stable for segregation on non-native background and decreased slightly for parental education from 2000 to 2010, however, they both remain at relatively high levels. Multilevel analysis show that student school achievement is negatively impacted by increased concentration of students with disadvantaged characteristics, i.e. higher levels of students with non-native background and lower levels of parental education. The results also indicate that non-native students are more negatively affected by these effects. Further, the analysis tests for threshold effects of segregation, but no such effects can be identified and it seems to be more or less linear, higher degree of segregation leads to stronger effects. It is concluded that differences between schools have an unequal and unfair effect on student school achievement.

Parents have reported decreased well-being due to events in parenting, and parenting support programs such as the Circle of Security aim to strengthen parenting and have shown improved health in parents. This study aimed to explore parents' experiences of participating in the parental education program Circle of Security and how it promote their well-being. The study's approach was inductive, with data material consisting of nineteen qualitative semi-structured interviews that were analysed using qualitative content analysis.  The analysis resulted in one main category: Parents´ enhanced parenting knowledge, and five subcategories: Parents´ understanding of children’s needs, Parents ‘avoiding conflicts and setting boundaries, Parents ‘ability to reflect, Parents ‘inner security, and Parents’ reduced stress. The result showed that the parents had received developed parenting that promote their well-being. A parental support program such as Circle of Security strengthens parenting and improves parents' well-being. It is an excellent alternative to a parental education program because parents' upbringing and well-being affect children's lifestyle. / Föräldrar har rapporterat försämrad hälsa på grund av svårhanterliga händelser i föräldraskapet. För att stödja och stärka föräldrar i sitt föräldraskap finns i Sverige så kallade föräldrastödsprogram. Trygghetscirkeln är en av dem och programmet har visat på en förbättrad hälsa hos föräldrar. Syftet med studien var att utforska föräldrars erfarenheter av att delta i föräldrautbildningen Trygghetscirkeln och hur den har främjat deras välbefinnande. Studiens ansats var induktiv med ett datamaterial bestående av nitton kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer som analyserades med hjälp av kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultatet av analysen blev huvudkategorin: Föräldrarnas förstärkta föräldrakunskap och fem underkategorier: Föräldrars förståelse för barns behov, Föräldrar som undviker konflikter och sätter gränser, Föräldrars förmåga att reflektera, Föräldrars inre trygghet och Föräldrars minskade stress. Resultatet visade att föräldrarna hade fått ett utvecklat föräldraskap som främjade deras välbefinnande. Ett föräldrastödsprogram som Trygghetscirkeln som både stärker föräldraskapet och främjar föräldrars välbefinnande är ett bra alternativ som föräldrautbildningsprogram då föräldrars uppfostran och välbefinnande påverkar barns livsstil.
