Gestaltningen av besatthet i skräck : En semiotisk analys av berättarkomponenterna i Penny Dreadful

Kronberg, Hanna January 2018 (has links)

The Tractarian <em>Penny Post</em>'s Early Years (1851–1852): An Upper-Class Effort "To Triumph in the <em>Working Man's Home</em>"

Ure, Kellyanne 06 August 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The Penny Post (1851–1896), a religious working-class magazine, was published following a critical time for the Oxford Movement, a High Church movement in the Church of England. The Oxford Movement's ideas were leaving the academic atmosphere of Oxford and traveling throughout the local parishes, where the ideals of Tractarian teachings met the harsh realities of practice and the motivations and beliefs of the working-class parishioners. The upper-class paternalistic ideologies of the Oxford Movement were not reflected in the parishes, and the working-classes felt distanced from their place in religious worship. The Penny Post was published and written by Tractarian clergymen and followers to "triumph in the Working Man's Home," attempting to convince a working-class audience that the upper-class Tractarian clergymen and parishioners both understood and wanted to help the poorer peoples of society. However, an analysis of the Penny Post reveals that its creators had more complex motives and were targeting a more diverse audience than they claimed. Because of these complexities, the Penny Post's creators could not reconcile the discrepancies between working-class ideologies and upper-class ideologies; the Penny Post, in the end, undermined its own intended purposes. The elements of the magazine that attempted to address working-class concerns were overshadowed by other elements that, while appearing to address working-class concerns, directly targeted an upper-class audience. This dichotomy of purpose—simultaneously addressing different classes with different, often contradictory, beliefs—reveals the multifaceted nature of the Penny Post's efforts to reach their audiences. The Penny Post is a magazine that simultaneously addresses an upper-class audience and a working-class audience, a duality that creates ideological contradictions and tensions throughout the magazine. These tensions reflect the class issues within Victorian society and the ways religious movements dealt with those tensions in periodicals like the Penny Post. The Penny Post provides an important look into how the Oxford Movement, a movement not known for its understanding of and interest in the working classes, did attempt to reach and understand the working classes through periodical literature.

Papasodoro, Charles January 2015 (has links)
Abstract : Given the recent melt acceleration of the Canadian arctic archipelago’s ice caps and the monitoring difficulties of this remote region, the development of new innovative monitoring tools has become essential. Here, the potential of the RADARSAT-2 stereo radargrammetry (SRG) is characterized for elevations extraction, as well as for elevation changes/mass balances calculations (historical and recent) on Barnes and Penny ice caps (Nunavut, Canada). Using the semi-automatic approach of correlation search from RADARSAT-2 stereoscopic couples of 2013 (wide ultra-fine mode; spatial resolution of 3 m; coverage of 50 km x 50 km), a vertical precision of ~7 m (LE68) is measured on ice-free terrain and this precision is possibly slighty worse on the ice cap because of the penetration depth’s variability. On the other hand, the 3D vision extraction approach reveals an altimetric precision of ~3-4 m (LE68) on the ablation area of the Penny Ice Cap. On the Barnes Ice Cap, elevation changes calculated relative to the oldest digital elevation models available allows to calculate an historical specific mass balance (1960-2013) of -0,49 ± 0,20 m w.e./year, resulting in a total annual mass balance of -2,9 Gt/year. Between 2005 and 2013, the specific mass balance of this ice cap increases to -1,20 ± 0,86 m w.e./year, which equals to a total annual mass balance f -7 Gt/year. On Penny Ice Cap’s ablation area, an average elevation change of -0,59 m/year is measured between 1958 and 2012. As also suggested in the literature, the recent melt acceleration is highly linked to warmer summer temperatures. Methodological and technical aspects are also presented and analyzed. No penetration depth (C band) is perceived on elevations derived from late ablation season images (late September/beginning of October), while a penetration of ~2,5-3 m is measured from images acquired in late October/beginning of November (freeze period). Our results also suggest the superiority and better consistency of the rational function model for geometrical correction of wide ultra-fine mode RADARSAT-2 images, compared to the hybrid Toutin’s model. Because of its all-weather functionality, its possible use without any ground control point and the simplicity and facility of its treatment, the RADARSAT-2 SRG represents a really good technology for glacier monitoring in regions affected by serious operational constraints.

Lobos, Jonathan, Chahine, Alexander January 2022 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the stock price development of initial public offerings (IPOs) in the short and long term. If underpricing occurs, conclusions can be drawn about how this affects the price development. The thesis also aims to provide a better understanding of IPOs and their pricing by studying a selection of companies listed on Nasdaq and NYSE in New York. Theory: In order to analyze initial public offerings price discovery both short term and long term, this study will apply the theories The Effective Market Hypothesis, Information Assymmetri and The winner’s Curse.  Method: To answer the purpose of the study, the study applied a quantitative method with a deductive approach. The analyzed companies were identified with the help of two databases to later be used in a t:test. Results: The results show that a statistical significance did not exist for the first day’s closing price nor on the observation’s day closing price. This leads to the acceptance of the study’s null hypothesis.  Conclusion: Although a statistical significance did not exist, the study found similarities with the theories and previous research that was used in the study. The study implies that initial public offerings are a better short term investment than long term.

Photo Policière: L'image que l'on donne les policières dans les polars policiers écrit par Chrystine Brouillet, Vicki Delany et Louise Penny / Photo Policière: Representations of Female Police Officers in Police Procedurals written by Chrystine Brouillet, Vicki Delany and Louise Penny

Taylor, Tammy January 2013 (has links)
Masculinity is still regarded as the embodiment of strength and heroism and the female body, weakness and victimization. Philippa Gates, Detecting Women, 282 Despite changes in the treatment of women over the decades, policewomen continue to suffer gender injustices at the hands of their male superiors, as well as from the community they are sworn to protect. The injustices they face are publicized by such media as the CBC, though often in an exaggerated fashion. As fiction often reflects reality, one can expect that the genre of the police procedural will demonstrate not only such gender injustices but also various ways victims respond to them. Like real policewomen, fictional female detectives are too often victims even when they are the protagonists, and even when their author is a woman. Evidence of the victimization of real and fictional policewomen will be explored in this thesis by looking at the history of detective fiction, and through real case studies involving real female police officers, as well as the analysis of certain key characters in focus texts by Chrystine Brouillet, Vicki Delany, and Louise Penny. As a result, it will be shown that the images projected by actual and fictional female police officers, while not always positive ones, are becoming more varied as a result of the feminist movement and as a result of literal and imaginary resistance to sexist stereotypes. Despite having moved into a protagonist position, fictional female detectives all too often have reduced agency and different gendered expectations than their male counterparts. Aspects of gender inequity present in Western societies today creep into fiction and are played out in ways not always possible in reality. Sometimes, sexist problems present in the fictional texts are resolved despite the fact that they still exist in certain policewomen's everyday lives. Stereotypes of what a police officer should be function in ways that reflect and reproduce gender injustices and often exist simultaneously with images of women that resist and oppose these same stereotypes. The representation of policewoman is thus multiple, reproducing stereotypes, blurring them, or erasing them altogether.

Rydqvist Ryan, Ebba January 2016 (has links)
<p>Reviderad upplaga</p>

Poetry on the plains: J.S. Penny and the environmental history of Fort Scott

Blake, Daron January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of History / Bonnie Lynn-Sherow / This thesis recreates the relationship between humans and their physical environment in Fort Scott, Kansas between 1850 and 1920 and uses the poetry of J.S. Penny, a contemporary amateur poet living and writing in Fort Scott, as an essential primary resource. Settlers came to this area in southeastern Kansas in the 19th century for its timber-lined streams, high precipitation, and rich soil. The Missouri River, Fort Scott, and Gulf Railroad was extended through Fort Scott in December of 1869. The arrival of the railroad transformed the town. The natural resources which had been a mark of identity for the people of Fort Scott became commodities to be sold in national markets. Manufacturing and industry boomed, but population would eventually plateau in the early 20th century, creating a small industrial city that had maintained a strongly rural sense of community. Penny’s poetry provides a personal, emotional response to the rapid changes to the landscape around him. Some of his poems on the local landscape directly note specific changes in the local ecology, while some demonstrate Penny’s religious connection the natural world—a common perspective during his time. Other pieces show us Penny’s observations of how his neighbors reacted to the weather and environment in Fort Scott. Penny, like many Americans in the early 20th century, saw the history of his home as one of agrarian development and westward expansion over an empty landscape; the Jeffersonian and Turnerian roots of his perspective are evident in his poetry. With Penny’s poetry, we can create a more complete environmental history of Fort Scott by understanding how Fort Scott residents related to the land around them.

Cracked Semi-infinite Cylinder And Finite Cylinder Problems

Kaman, Mete Onur 01 May 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This work considers a cracked semi-infinite cylinder and a finite cylinder. Material of the cylinder is linearly elastic and isotropic. One end of the cylinder is bonded to a fixed support while the other end is subject to axial tension. Solution for this problem can be obtained from the solution for an infinite cylinder having a penny-shaped rigid inclusion at z = 0 and two penny-shaped cracks at z = &plusmn / L. General expressions for this problem are obtained by solving Navier equations using Fourier and Hankel transforms. When the radius of the inclusion approaches the radius of the cylinder, the end at z = 0 becomes fixed and when the radius of the cracks approaches the radius of the cylinder, the ends at z = &plusmn / L become cut and subject to uniformly distributed tensile load. Formulation of the problem is reduced to a system of three singular integral equations. By using Gauss-Lobatto and Gauss-Jacobi integration formulas, these three singular integral equations are converted to a system of linear algebraic equations which is solved numerically.

This dissertation aims to analyse how horror is represented in the popular fiction that was produced during the Victorian era in England, especially in the subgenre that came to be known as the penny blood. To this end, the selected body of work comprises two romances that have been considered typical of this subgenre: The Mysteries of London (1844-1848), by G. W. M. Reynolds, and The String of Pearls: A Romance (1846-1847), by an anonymous author. In this research, the penny blood is claimed to be one of the earliest forms of popular fiction, for it emerged from a combination of factors such as urbanisation, mass literacy and the development of the publishing market, and it was also characterised by the massive publication of sensational stories catering to the growing demand for light reading by the working class and creating an accessible, cheap kind of print culture. In addition, the penny blood is studied here as a set of narratives that incarnates the urban Gothic, since it often depicts the criminal underworld of the city and the monstrous villains that inhabit it. In this sense, the penny blood, by placing horror within the city, reflected certain anxieties displayed by Victorian society regarding the new urban space that developed itself so rapidly throughout the nineteenth century.
