Ecrire l'histoire de l'art de la marge / Writing Art History from the margins

Biass-Fabiani, Sophie 08 October 2016 (has links)
This dissertation based on works aims to reconstruct the cohesiveness of a research trajectory both characterized by: 1) the attempt to include art history in an interdisciplinary frame that gives a significant weight to its social and communicative dimension without being reductionist; 2) the will to question afresh the relationships between center and artistic periphery through published texts during a career devoted to curating and exhibiting. This is why the original text starts with a reassessment of Enrico Castelnuovo and Carlo Ginzburg famous article based on the research logic that different published texts reveal. Then the renovated analytical grid is applied to an object, Provence. This region is both an aesthetical object and a site of production. Its paradox leads it to be a place of high symbolic value as well as a periphery, sometimes stigmatized. The third chapter is based on a comparison between the artists that have been exhibited during the curator’s trajectory. By doing that, the notions of art, institution and market are revisited with a special attention given to the functions of exhibition and art critique in the process of artistic recognition. Last the relative importance of photo and video art in the curator’s trajectory leads to reassess the notion of middle-brow art (art moyen) developed by Pierre Bourdieu. One can thus identify the dynamics specific to those domains that aims to end the situation of relegation that has for long trapped them.

Managing Distance : Small Firm Networks at the Geographic Margins

Dubois, Alexandre January 2013 (has links)
Small businesses located in the most sparsely populated and peripheral parts of Europe are frequently believed to be marginalised with respect to the processes of economic globalisation. This thesis proposes to explore an alternative perspective for understanding how small businesses that are located at the geographical margins engage with the globalised economy. Distance is no longer a purely physical phenomenon. Meanwhile, networks are considered to be the primary means for small firms to mobilise external resources and stay competitive. Acknowledging these conceptual shifts, this thesis explores how peripheral small businesses develop network configurations with multiple actors across multiple geographical scales to engage in the global economy. This thesis consists of four papers and a cover essay. The four papers share the theme of the network interaction of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in peripheral regions and discuss this theme from various perspectives with different research questions. The papers use combinations of quantitative and qualitative analytical methods to empirically investigate the configuration of small firm networks in the case study of Upper Norrland in Sweden. The cover essay introduces the overarching conceptual framework that is grounded in ideas from the seminal work of Granovetter on the social embeddedness of economic interactions and the ‘strength of weak ties’, and this essay contributes to the debate in geography on multi-scalar proximity dynamics. The empirical findings of the papers describe the collaborative and transactional forms of firm relations in peripheral regions and discuss the role of key actors—such as international customers or regional intermediary organisations—in bridging the local and extra-local dimensions of small firm networks. The conceptual contribution of this thesis corroborates the understanding that small firm development requires a balance between regional and international networks. This thesis also contributes to the debate on development policies for peripheral regions by offering insights into the manner in which institutional support for the design and implementation of open, flexible network arrangements may provide a leverage effect for small firm development. /
At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 3: Submitted. Paper 4: Submitted.

Kunskapens händer : Kunskapstraditioner, maskulinitet och förändring i Lesjöfors 1940-2010

Ivener, Ramona January 2014 (has links)
Lesjöfors, located in the municipality of Filipstad in Värmland, has a mining history dating back to the 1600s. In the mid-1970s, however, Lesjöfors, like Bergslagen at large, suffered from the international recession, and structural change had a major impact on this region, affecting society as well as individuals. These transformations form the basis of this thesis. In today’s society, knowledge or training is constantly in demand. However, the political context does not always allow for a consideration of the impact of decisions on small local communities and individuals in rural areas. Even the most well-intentioned politician and decision-maker may find themselves in the cultural trap of seeing "the others", "ordinary people" in a certain light or perspective. In a world that increasingly emphasizes knowledge, it is important to discuss what this development actually means to people. This thesis investigates the importance of local knowledge traditions in a mining district during an eventful historical phase. The main focus is on men and the role that local knowledge traditions – including knowledge patterns and knowledge ideals – have played in their choice of education. The study covers the period 1940-2010, which was marked by both industrial progress and drastic decline, and offers the opportunity to identify change over time. The study shows that there are clear trends in today's society to educate people, get them to break with the past, adopt new lifestyles and rational approaches. In Lesjöfors it is no longer possible to live the way people used to, that is, like their ancestors, to enter the industry as they reach full maturity. This means that the need to adapt to the requirements of a new situation while retaining the knowledge and identity of the past creates social conflicts of interests and an ambivalent situation for the individual.

Doischer, Tomáš January 2017 (has links)
There are some adjectives in language which sound strange to a native speaker in their graded form. Consider this sentence: "These pearls are more real than the real ones!" ("Tyhle perly jsou pravější než pravé!") How can they be more real? What does it even mean? I attempt to answer these and other questions in this paper. While the phenomenon of rarely graded adjectives may quite peripheral, it is nonetheless interesting and understanding it is important for the general understanding of adjective gradation. Adjectives such as real are traditionally considered non-gradable. However, as we can see from the example, that doesn't mean they can't be graded. The distinction between gradable and non-gradable adjectives apparently cannot be clear-cut. The goal of this paper is to describe this phenomenon, determine which properties rarely graded adjectives have and how they can be graded. I use data from a large corpus of written Czech (SYN v4) to find these adjectives and the way they are used. I employ both quantitative and qualitative methods to reach a comprehensive overview of rarely graded adjectives. I use statistical methods to find parameters specific for this type of adjective and semantic analysis to divide it into well-motivated categories. I also explain why they are graded only rarely, how...

Problematika periferních oblastí v České republice (se zaměřením na Znojemsko) / The problems of peripheral regions in Czech Republic (region Znojemsko)

Gregorová, Alena January 2009 (has links)
The dissertation focuses on problems of peripheral regions in Czech Republic, mainly on region Znojemsko, which is situated near border with Austria. The theoretical part treats of universal concepts of peripheral regions, defines peripheral regions in Czech Republic and tries to find their typical signs. There are also mentioned strategical documents of regional policy. The aim of these documents is balanced and sustainable development of the Czech Republic without regional disparities. Next part describes the region Znojemsko and identifies peripheral villages in this region. Contemporary situation of these villages is evaluated by socioeconomic analysis, which helps to determine opportunities for future development.

Sustainable Development on Colonised Land : A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Sustainability of Wind-Power

Waara, Oskar January 2017 (has links)
Sustainable development is major post of global and national political agendas, and notions of sustainability permeate whole societies. Sweden is heavily influenced by sustainable development which can be exemplified by the ambitious goal of fossil-free energy and the current phase of rapid wind-power developments. In the name of sustainability many of these wind-power turbines and parks are now placed in the northern regions of the country, but whether it is sustainable is questionable. The northern region is a colonised territory, and the colonial relations between the indigenous Sámi people and the non-indigenous population remains an unresolved area. It is a cause of grievance and continuous conflict over land-use in the north – by of which wind-power developments are a part of. Therefore, this thesis examine the discursive construct of sustainability, in terms of content and underlying power relations, when applied to wind-power in four north Swedish newspapers between 2009 and 2016. The thesis use discourse and media-sociological theories in order to understand the role of media texts in the social construction of knowledge and how knowledge is shaped by social realities and shaping the social interpretation of reality. To study discourses a qualitative method based on critical discourse analysis is employed with the aim of investigating contextual meaning derived from the relationship between the text and the surrounding society. The empirical material is subject to an inductive analysis that has much in common with a grounded theory approach, but which involves some deductive analytical elements derived from theory and previous research. The findings of this thesis is that there is no singular discursive construct of sustainability, but rather a multiplicity of perspectives that together form a general representation of how sustainability is perceived when applied to wind-power. However, the discourses were dominated by non-indigenous actors with a national perspective - such as political parties, government actors and the wind-power industry. They portrayed sustainability and wind-power as environmentally benign economic growth leading to societal development, but in doing so experiences of marginalisation, and sustainability perspectives of peripheral groups, were made invisible. The study did find indications of change in the discourses from 2012 in the sense that the perspective of dominant actors was increasingly challenged by Sámi reindeer herders and rural populations, but the discursive and practical impact of this change remains uncertain.

Prostorové změny ve světové ekonomice: jádrové oblasti a periferie / Spatial changes in the world economy: core areas and periphery

Pavlicová, Vladimíra January 2012 (has links)
The position of countries in the world economy is uneven, therefore core and peripheral areas can be distinguished. However, the identification of factors, which affect economic development and thus the position of a country in the hierarchical system, is more important than the classification itself. Owing to clarity, the factors are divided into three parts: space and resources, population and production. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the most important trends (geographical, demographical and in production) in the world economy in terms of their spatial progress as well as to examine their relationship to the key indicator of the economic level, which is represented by gross domestic product per capita. At first, theoretical approaches concerning the issue are described. On their basis, a pair of indicators representing individual factor is always chosen. Subsequently, these indicators are analyzed at the country level from 1976 to 2010. Their spatial changes are well illustrated by cartograms. The last part proves by the means of mathematical statistics that the effect of geographical factors on the economic level has diminished during the examined period, whereas the effect of demographical and production factors has not changed significantly.

In peripheral countries, cities have undergone extraordinary growth causing the emergence of the largest metropolis. This occurred mainly from the second half of the twentieth century. With urban sprawl expanded the peripheries and have them reside in most cases, the poorest population. This work embodies the concern to understand the experiences of the residents of the urban periphery: what are the meanings and values that they attribute to the place where they live. To get an understanding of the experiences of those who live in the suburbs, we left for the case study in Cesário Alvim neighborhood of Juiz de Fora MG. This district was selected to conduct a study using the principles of Humanistic Geography. Some issues were raised humanistic character, concerning relations with the residents of the place. To apply the concepts of topophilia topophobia of Yi-Fu Tuan, a field survey was conducted in which the subjects were interviewed in order to assess how they identify with the place and your living space. The research methodology was adjusted with the goal proposed and the theoretical approach. Qualitative research with theoretical basis in phenomenology was used to be the one that serves the purpose it was intended to work. The qualitative applied research helped to understand the phenomenon from the perspective of the subject. Our work thus constitutes an effort to understand the urban periphery from the perspective of its residents through the case study in Cesário Alvim neighborhood.

Conceptualizing Eastern Europe: Past and Present

Mačkinis, Vilius January 2010 (has links)
The ideas presented in the dissertation are based on the premise that the concept of Eastern Europe is a construction, which received its meaning(s) trough events and shifts, which also shaped the idea of Europe. To analyze these influences several labels and aspects of history, which constructed the concept of Eastern Europe can be recognized. The author argues that there can be five important aspects, forming the concept and providing meanings, discerned and considered: (1) geography associated with the Eastern border of the European continent and its flexibility; (2) cultural trends, mainly provided by the ideas of the Enlightenment, which present the eastern part as wild, barbaric and uncivilized; (3) political formations, which by military and political means conquered or lost the region, alienating it with the West or making it a 'buffer zone'; (4) Economic aspects of backwardness and the constant try to catch-up with the West; and (5) the discourse about the region itself, historiography depicting the formations and ascribing labels to discourse.
