January 2016 (has links)
In this case, the phenomenon of the existence of scientists as members of the teacher training courses, administrative and ideologically organized into University, bring reflections about different dimensions that take part on this set of beliefs and values, in addition to its own pedagogical and research practices that make the composition of knowledge of these individuals. The question on this research is: how scientists mean the experience of being a professor-researcher, member in teacher's training courses at the inseparability of university academical structure? Looking for the answer, four professors-researchers, from a University of São Paulo State, were interviewed using phenomenology as qualitative research approach, asked about the practice of science within the university academical structure, as well as on their participation in teacher's training courses. Meaning units were found through the methodological guidance of phenomenology, and after three phenomenological reductions, two open categories were built structuring the phenomenon investigated. With the open categories "Science" and "University", there was a survey of references that allow the understanding of each of these. Two "Science", the research led to the contributions of the Philosophy of Science and Sociology of Science, while the category "University" asked a historical study of the academic organization of the university in Brazil, as well as the political-philosophical and pedagogical context of the university nowadays. The analysis of the constituents invariants of open categories produced a framework in which science has manifested itself as a closed activity, dogmatic, based on a technical-scientism, emptying their social contributions. Personal experiences in the early to moderate stages of Alzheimer's disease : an interpretative phenomenological analysis

Coaley, Tanya Elisabeth January 2001 (has links)
Previous research has focused on measuring awareness in dementia with few attempts to define or clarify this concept, nor explore its meaning to the individual. The present study is preceded by a review of the concepts of insight and awareness, and the different approaches to understanding these drawn from the psychological, neurological and psychiatric literatures. The strengths and limitations of the different and models are discussed and the case for further research in this area is presented. This is followed by a research study that explores the experiences of seven people in the early to moderate stages of dementia. Interpretative phenomenological analysis illuminates some of the psychological factors that contribute to awareness and how these factors impact upon selfconcept. It is suggested that clinicians and services need to pay greater attention to the phenomenological experiences of individuals with dementia. Four superordinate themes emerged which were labelled 1. Relationship with memory 2. Relationship with professionals 3. Emotional experience of memory loss 4. Coping and maximising resources. Each category compares and contrasts individual experiences and suggests that insight may be a complex concept that would be better understood by taking into account the psychological processes that contribute to individual awareness, and their subsequent impact on self-concept. The research paper is followed by a critical review that outlines the strengths and weaknesses of this study, as well as the process issues that arose during the course of the research and the clinical implications.

The present study aims to elucidate and understand the role of phenomenology in the context of neuroscience, in particular, whether and how the former has and can contribute to the development of the latter. The phenomenological perspective refers to a tradition of philosophy that originated in Europe by the philosopher Edmund Husserl and later followed with thinkers such as Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jean-Paul Sartre and contemporary thinkers, among them, Shaun Gallagher, Dan Zahavi and Evan Thompson, whose ideas will be the guiding thread of this dissertation. Currently phenomenology that is scoped to the study of the phenomenon, ie, that which presents itself to consciousness has been used as a methodology in neuroscience so that we can ratify the polls in the third person through a first-person approach, designing experiments proper and reasonable manner and for the interpretation of results obtained by empirical research. In this context, each with its goal, raises some theoretical lines that use of phenomenology and integrate what is regarded as the naturalization of phenomenology, taking as examples the neurophenomenology, the front-loading phenomenology and the mathematization of phenomenology. The status of naturalization of phenomenology is something corroborated by some thinkers who advocate for the advancement of scientific progress through various ways such as also seen antagonistically because flees the way in which phenomenology was proposed, to address science as a method of knowledge of what is strictly experienced by an experience subject.

A Phenomenological Investigation of Competition in High School Bands

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This study investigates the lived experience of competition in high school band and the manner in which competition influences and frames band curricula. A hermeneutic phenomenological method based on the works of van Manen and Vagle was used to investigate what it was like for participants to be in competition. A theoretical framework organized around Schwab's commonplaces of education was used to interpret findings related to the curricular areas of the teacher, learner, subject matter, and milieu. I examined data through a lens incorporating principles of John Dewey's philosophy related to each of the commonplaces. Twelve individuals participated in the study representing experiences had both as students and as music educators. Participants lived and taught in communities throughout the United States and brought differing levels of teaching and competitive experience. Data were generated through in-depth interviews and collaborative phenomenological texts. Research questions included: What is the lived experience of competing in a high school band like?; and, How does competition frame and influence high school band curricula? Findings indicate that competition was a meaningful and influential part of participants' work as band directors and educational experiences as students. Competition was approached with tension as participants acknowledged negative concerns over the influence of competitions on their students, yet chose to engage in competitive activities. Marching band contests offered a creative outlet where directors could develop custom materials and they did so with a significant motivation to win. Competition was perceived as an influence on band directors' professional reputations, feelings of competence, and how band programs were viewed in the community. Students were motivated by competitions and reacted strongly to competitive results such as rankings, ratings, and other distinctions. Findings also indicate that band curricula emphasizing competition share similar curricular facets: (a) teachers carefully control and manage classroom activities and curricular choices; (b) students are viewed as skilled performers who are dependent upon their teachers for learning; (c) subject matter is narrowly considered around measurable behavioral objectives and repertoire selection; and, (d) the educational environment is dominated by the teacher who may use competition to motivate students to work and practice more. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music Education 2016

Our goal is to analyze Edmund Husserl's theory of intentionality, as found in his 1913 text, Ideas Pertaining to a Pure Phenomenology and to a Phenomenological Philosophy, and, in parallel, Aron Gurwitsch's theory of intentionality, as formulated in his doctoral thesis, from 1929, entitled Phenomenology of Thematics and of the Pure Ego. We emphasize, on the one hand, the method used by the authors in order to establish their theories, and, on the other hand, the specific contents of each theory. The research aims to contribute to the elucidation of the role of Husserl and Gurwitsch in the history of psychology and philosophy, to the clarification of the possible relations between transcendental phenomenology and empirical psychology, and to provide a better understanding of phenomenological psychology, which can be developed from the theory of intentionality and from constitutive phenomenology. The dissertation begins with providing a historical and logical background for the problems related to the concepts of intentionality and psychological description, taking as depart the work of Franz Brentano. The first chapter introduces Husserl's theory of phenomenological reduction and his Cartesian motivation. The second chapter consists of a series of analyzes and descriptions of pure and transcendental consciousness. The third chapter consists of a presentation of the constancy hypothesis, of its rejection by Gestalt psychology and, then, of the analogy made by Gurwitsch between this rejection and phenomenological reduction. The fourth chapter consists of a presentation of the structural aspects of Gurwitsch's theory of intentionality. The fifth chapter deals with Gurwitsch's theory of attention. Finally, the sixth chapter presents the main problems which Gurwitsch sees in the egological conception of consciousness and the main contributions of his...

Ideias de lugar : aportes transdisciplinares para o entendimento do sentido de lugar na arquitetura / Ideas of place: transdisciplinary contributions towards an understanding of a sense of place in architecture

Gonçalves, Leandro Forgiarini de January 2017 (has links)
This research presents a theoretical study brought about by an attempt to achieve an understanding of a sense of place in relation to the realm of ideas, which result from mental elaborations created from people’s experiences, perceptions, and imagination. The approach is grounded on a transdisciplinary perspective in order to develop some reflective thought on the many symbolic and subjective issues around the theme. Taking into account the hypothesis that place is not a mere physical construction, given that within the scope of use and appropriation the contact between individuals and erected buildings is a determining factor to bring forth an essential sense of place, there is an understanding that this essence is intimately linked to the ideas that people have about places, reflecting the existential phenomenon of inhabiting. This perspective indicates the adoption of phenomenology as an analytical method concerned with questions regarding the problem of essences and which, in the specific case of a study on place, echoes the domains of emotions and human thought. By adjoining this subjective sphere permeated by existential practices established between subject and the experienced world, one can observe that the sense of place addressed by the study is perceived as having a strong symbolic character which goes beyond the perspective of physical locations and the materiality of the built environment. This is the foundation of the thesis pointing towards the understanding that architecture does not build places, but rather, upon acting on spatial configuration echoes an activity that helps people compose their own ideas of place. Both the thought behind an architectural project and the physical characteristics of the executed work are capable of disposing the conceptual, utilitarian, and aesthetic orders that signal the guidelines interposed in the relationship between people and places. Architecture stimulates users’ perception and invites them to an experience that entices ideas formatted by the use, appropriation, and/or contemplation of a given environment, thus solidifying a sense of place suitable for inhabiting which, in practice, corresponds to the acts of entering, remaining in, and contemplating the world.

Ronaldo Manzi Filho 28 June 2013 (has links)
Our objective is to perform a critical analysis of the debate between the philosopher Merleau-Ponty and the psychoanalytical theories contemporaries with him, demonstrating how this debate was determining in the development of his thought. We do not aim at demonstrating that his interpretation of psychoanalysis simply meets the phenomenology, but that it configures itself as a real need for dialog. Far from stating that this was Merleau-Pontys only important dialog with the non-philosophies or that his work is homogeneous, we aim at demonstrating how some clinical concepts were embodied in his work, fading among the key concepts created to accomplish his philosophical project.

"A amputação sob uma perspectiva fenomenológica" / "Amputation from a phenomenological perspective"

Gislaine Cristina de Oliveira Chini 20 December 2005 (has links)
This study addresses amputation as from the moment when it became part of the author’s concerns, integrating her world and her life, through inquiries concerning the issue of amputation, its implications and the feelings of those who experience it. It is a qualitative investigation, conducted in the light of the theoretical and methodological framework of phenomenology. Thus, its aim is to understand the experience of amputation from the viewpoint of the amputee. Initially, in order to understand the phenomenon that stands before my eyes and calls for clarification, I conducted bibliographic research, which enabled me to understand amputation better and from several points of view, as well as allowing me to appropriate some of the ideas contained in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophic thoughts, in which perception, the perceiving and perceived body, is addressed in regard to its relation with the world and the deep-rooted position of the spirit in this body. After becoming acquainted with amputation from the literary point of view, I sought to share it with an amputee, inhabiting this person’s world. By sharing this moment, I was able to understand its significance and meanings, expressing them in the form of thematic categories. Thus, it was possible to reveal some of the facets of the amputation phenomenon, besides understanding the amputee and amputation such as it reveals itself.

Lidgren, Therese January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of my study is to highlight the knowledge of toddlers introduction to preschoolfrom the educators perspective. Four educators have been interviewed about their experiences regarding toddlers introduction seen as a phenomenon. My thesis approach is inspired by phenomenology. My research questions focus on the following: educators experiences of different introduction models to preschool, what do the educators believe is significant for creating security for the child and can the educators see any changes regarding the introduction during their years in preschool? The surveys data is collected with the method of qualitative interviews followed by an analysis based on the phenomenological approach. In my findings I could see that the educators use what is called parent active introduction when introducing toddlers into preschool. The parents role during this model is to be active and helpin the daily activities along with their children. All the educators had experiences with the old, traditional model in which the parents took a more secluded role. All the educators where satisfied with the model they were using during the introduction. They all mentioned the importance of making the parents feel comfortable and safe in the environment and how that could help when bonding with the toddler. The educators expressed that making the toddlerand parent feel safe was the most important issue when introducing them to preschool.

The Statue that Houses the Temple: A Phenomenological Investigation of Western Embodiment Towards the Making of Heidegger's Missing Connection with the Greeks

Arvanitopoulos, Michael 07 April 2016 (has links)
Much of the criticism Heidegger has drawn from realism, from postmodernism and even existentialism, as well from the anti-Nazi protests on his philosophy, could be diluted if a defaulted connection was made between Heidegger's metaphysics and the Greeks. Being and Time drafted the blueprint of the origin of predication and world-disclosure from the primordial intuition of the limitations of action in the face of human finitude. This existential reprioritization forced a radical reversal of primacy from nature to culture, having assumed the absolute objectivity of some original world determinacy, the phenomenological structure of which, nevertheless, was never produced in Heidegger’s seminal work or thereafter. Existentialism has thus been downplayed as a counterintuitive, fanciful hypothesis, and will remain so for as long as horizontal temporality has not made itself available to itself as a negated object of perception in the horizon of disclosure. The objectified subjectivity of Dasein’s cultural bias should be demonstrable, if there is indeed a determinant even firmer and “causally prior” to the object of perception in reified nature. And the theory of freedom that is existentialism will remain a “theory” with a private definition of the term, if both the phenomenological structures of the “objectification” of subjectivity have not appeared: first as the objectivity of freedom that is absolute and universal, but no less than as the object that frees made up from nothing other than the absolute and universal objectivity of freedom. Heidegger must have felt this most pressing shortcoming in his metaphysics, because in a later monumental work, The Origin of the Work of Art, he avowed of such an object that is both the programmatic manifesto of freedom, and frees, pointing to the Greek Doric temple. He must have realized that the highest objectification of Dasein’s volatile subjectivity was somehow of “Greek” origin, and as I will argue, in this assumption alone he was right. But his proof was premised therein in an incomplete, trivial and self-contradictory way that left exposed to counter-entrenchment his arguments over both the attribution of the origin of reality, and consequently also its subjective constitution. From this point on, existentialism has remained doggedly problematic, if not inconsequential, in being unconnected to its bloodline, that is, phenomenology, and inasmuch as Heidegger’s incomplete metaphysics has remained unconnected to his miscued art theory. My hermeneutic method seeks this elusive, twofold objectification of subjectivity, in order to justify existentialism by simultaneously making the missing connections between Heidegger and the Greeks, and between Being and Time and The Origin of the Work of Art. The connections I am suggesting are both necessary and possible, provided that Heidegger’s theory of art is modified to grant monumental statuary its due hermeneutic primacy. Heidegger attributed the disclosure of world in truth-as-untruth to poetry and architecture, while Gadamer, who advanced Heidegger’s phenomenology to the currently predominant hermeneutic theory, also gave primacy to poetry and architecture. Their mistake is critical, because, as I will argue, Greek statuary is the patent twofold objectification of Dasein’s existential analytic, it is the convergence point of evidence to infer Heidegger’s missing theory of embodiment, and it is the ultimate origin of Western metaphysics. Current theories of embodiment, including Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological case from where a missing dialogue has been attempted to derive Heidegger's theory of embodiment, typically confine themselves to Dasein’s ontological and ontic corporeality. I suggest that such theories should have addressed the necessity of the structures of Reason to incarnate themselves as the fundamental ontological prescriptions of perception. To address the necessity of this incarnation in monumental art as a primordial world disclosure, is to explore in this work a previously untapped tripartite hermeneutic conjecture, where theory of art and theory of embodiment are already theories of perception. My hermeneutic hypothesis adheres to, corroborates and advances basic phenomenological principles, to show how Dasein’s embodied structures in the exclusivity of Greek statuary have so far been misunderstood, decontextualized, and begged the question, accordingly as a “mystery” (Hegel), as “godly” (von Humboldt), as a “misunderstanding” (Buschor), or as “Greek naturalism” (art historians). Special attention will be paid to works such as the Laokoön Group, the Ptoan Apollo, the Blond Youth, the Zeus of Artemision and the Gigantomachy. I argue that these cultural fossils provide the most reliable grounds for a thorough commentary to Heidegger’s implied theory of embodiment, because they manifest as the art which relates most intimately to the instrumental modality through which the being-towards-death makes itself phenomenologically available to itself as the negation of the negation to live. Additionally, and in a postmodern world of academic wars that have claimed every aspect of Greek culture as stolen from other great civilizations, such solely uncontested cultural fossils are arguably the unsolicited proof classicists have been unable to produce regarding the exclusively Greek origin of Western metaphysics. The most consequential thrust of this work seeks to revitalize Heidegger’s claim regarding the origin and the chronology of world against competing alternatives such as Christian metaphysics, science’s Big Bang Theory, or the emasculated feminist case regarding the metaphysical primacy of the womb. The ultimate contribution this work aspires to, is the empowering of a presently stalled paradigm shift from the scientific to an existential-phenomenological world view. This shift would be akin to the one which procured with the advent of the Enlightenment between science and religion - a clash still raging in education – where further progress now demands that humanity leaves behind the disguised alienation which Heidegger himself coined as “the dictatorship of science.”
