Xiu, Kun 06 September 2023 (has links)
[EN] The present study focuses on addressing those aspects of "beauty" that are underestimated in the classical view and which are either unrecognised or underappreciated in their plenitude in international perspectives. In this analysis, we propose an alternative vision to the current canons called "intangible beauty" to distinguish it from the rational and visible sense of beauty. For this purpose we have examined a number of cultural concepts and aesthetic approaches related to the expression of abstract spirit and time in the East Asian cultures of China and Japan, as well as finding similar expressions in Western perspectives. In the process of documentary observation we further deepened our understanding of some aesthetic concepts such as: the Yijing, emptiness, Wabi-sabi, Y¿gen, Mono no aware, ruins and nostalgia. On the other hand, we have studied the proper nature of photographic images and their particular expressions associated with this aesthetic connotation. The knowledge of time, space and beauty conveyed by these artistic expressions are characteristic aspects of different cultures that bring us closer to each other's aesthetic approaches. This work examines the practical manifestation of these notions through a case study of photographic images by Eastern and Western artists: Lang Jingshan, Yang Yongliang, Masao Yamamoto, Wolfgang Tillmans, Albarrán Cabrera and Sally Mann. With all this, we have managed to unveil and contemplate such beauty related to the expression of the abstract spirit and the time to which the aim of the study is directed. Furthermore, during this research, an artistic experimentation project has been carried out to verify the revelation and perception of intangible beauty through photographic images. / Xiu, K. (2023). Space Use and Annual Survival of Hybridized Mouflon Sheep in Hawaii and Comparing Estimates of Population Size through Instantaneous Sampling and Photographic Capture-Recapture

Adams, Bradley Jay 01 April 2019 (has links)
Significant efforts in conservation are devoted to the management and study of ungulates, due to their significant roles in ecosystems as well as their potential economic value. This is especially true for species considered exotic, such as mouflon sheep (Ovis musimon) in Hawaii. Effective management of an exotic species requires an understanding of ecological metrics such as space use, survival, and population size. We provided these metrics for a population of mouflon that have hybridized with feral sheep (Ovis aries) on the island of Hawaii. In Chapter 1, we quantified space use and annual survival of sheep in an area where sheep are managed for hunting opportunity. We determined that sheep have relatively small home-ranges and high rates of annual survival (>90%). In Chapter 2, we provided the first estimate of population size for the same study area while simultaneously testing the viability of a novel method of estimating population size, currently known as Instantaneous Sampling. Using photographic capture recapture as a comparison method, we compared estimates derived from both techniques and provided support for Instantaneous Sampling as an alternative method for estimating population size.

Une approche comparée Pau (France) et Saragosse (Espagne) / Patrimonialization of urban river spaces and experience of the users, visitors and inhabitants. A compared approach Pau (France) and Saragossa (Spain).

Leichnig, Kildine 04 December 2015 (has links)
This human geography PhD thesis focuses on the sensitive experience that users – visitors and inhabitants - from two south-western European cities, Pau and Saragosse, have of the urban river spaces undergoing a process of patrimonialization. In their attempt to improve the quality of their living environment and carry on with their economic and urban development, the Pau agglomeration and the city of Saragossa are trying to better integrate their watercourses into the urban system through a process of patrimonialization. As for tourism, it holds an ambiguous place in these processes. The offer of tourist and leisure activities is hardly developed and exploited by the public authorities and visitors’ expectations are ignored. This research aims at mitigating some of these gaps by providing information on users’ sensitive experience. As a matter of fact, a better knowledge of users’ experience can enrich the urban project and increase awareness upon the potential of river spaces. In order to explore the sensitive experience, both in its sensory and emotional dimension and highlight users’ considerations, a combinatorial research approach was adopted. It relies on direct and participant observation and on the use of photographic and cinematic tool as a support during the interview. The analysis of the 137 interviews taken allowed the identification of two major results: on one hand, multisensory and fragmentary experience of river spaces generates an intimate reference to space and time and, on the other hand, the ignorance of the river space does not necessarily mean that users are not interested in river spaces, or that they have no opinion on urban nature issues. Extensively, by questioning the relationship between man and river space or in other words man and nature, this PhD thesis reveals that the latter is perceived in an ambivalent way. Although appreciated, and even cherished, the river is seen either as an ordinary natural space or as a place that holds certain remarkable elements. Sometimes qualified as wild, this space ought to be managed and controlled. With regard to the urban project, the geographical approach adopted determines the focus on the experience felt and lived by the users of natural public places.

Dorfling, Aletta 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Visual Art))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is concerned with the way in which the photographic image has conventionally been subject to a mimetic code of "behaviour", resulting in the marginalization of alternative, representational functions. An interesting area of study is, however, laid bare when the complex relationship between the viewer and image initiates a discussion around the former's wavering position as autonomous agent within the observation process. Using this awareness as a point of departure, my discussion will be primarily situated within a psychoanalytic framework by focusing partly on concepts like Einfühlung, the Lacanian Real and John Dewey's theory of art as experience. An apparent dualistic rivalry, that situates the photo-image simultaneously as a mimetic agent of reality and pictorial fiction, apparently devoid of language and equally riddled with discursive interpretations, serves furthermore as an ideal complication of the photograph's conventional, representational function. These opposing "forces", recognizable as a typical characteristic of the photographic image, subtly challenges the viewer to regard it with a heightened sensitivity – resulting in an awareness that the photograph's inseparable bond with its discursive boundaries, and appetite for the "unrepresentational", does in fact represent a constructive coalition. The photographic work of Lien Botha, especially her Amendment-series (2006) and Parrot Jungle (2009) will serve as a visual emphasis of my arguments.

A Fuzzy Logic Approach for Recognition of Photographic Compositions

Huang, Jui Hua Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis addresses the problem of how to recognize the photographic composition from a given photo based on the theory of fuzzy logic. Composition is one of the important aesthetics for the plane figure photo art. To present the balance of its holistic picture, it takes the advantage of special object arrangement after acting perspective projection. A piece of professional and qualified photo work will realize these basic photo composition methods. For many applications about the digital photo, the operations, i.e., photo enhancement, segmentation, output, and synthesis, all need to match up the photographic composition to do accurate processing rather than “blind” processing that assumes each photo with the same “composition.” An automatic recognition method using image features from some specific regions is described. The method is employed in a Mamdani model and combines outputs of multiple fuzzy logic rules and feature extraction algorithms to obtain confidences that can identify the correct photographic composition. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust and effective for photographic composition recognition. The feature with adjusting in different photo composing will be able to comfort our human sight.

Fotografický esej včera a dnes (komparace mediálního obrazu válečných konfliktů ve zpravodajských periodikách) / Photographic essay of yestrday and today (comparison of media image of war conflicts in news periodicals)

Havlovicová, Anna January 2013 (has links)
The diploma thesis Photographic essay of yesterday and today (comparison of media image of war conflicts in news periodicals) presents comparison of the visual image of photographic essay of the 50s and 60s - the classical photojournalism period, with the contemporary one. The diploma thesis examines photographic essay, using war photography as an example. For clarity, photographic essays from two major war conflicts are examined. The pictures published in the American news magazine LIFE dealing with the Vietnam war are used as an example of the photographic essay produced during the classical photojournalism era of the 50s and 60s. Photographic essays published by the members of VII Photo Agency committed to the Iraq war serve as an example of the contemporary work. This thesis analyses the individual photos and the visual image of photographic essay on the whole, too. The aim of the diploma thesis is to demonstrate that modern technology highly affects the visual image of today's photographic essays.

Miguel Rio Branco: imaterialidades do objeto, materialidades da imagem / -

Araújo Filho, José Mariano Klautau de 20 August 2015 (has links)
The dissertation investigates the dynamics of the photographic image present in the poetics of Brazilian artist Miguel Rio Branco. For such, I examine his trajectory through analytical objects: the books \"Dulce Sudor Amargo\"(1985), \"Nakta\" (1996), and \"Silent Book\" (1998), as well as the movie \"Nada levarei quando morrer aqueles que mim deve cobrarei no inferno\" (sic) or, in English \"I shall take nothing when those die who owe me will charge in hell\" (sic) made in 1981. These works are axes that allow the comprehension of the artist\'s complex handling of the notions of time, perception, and reality. In this process photography plays a thought-provoking role in restructuring the perceived object as a phenomenon in a world understood through the image. When Miguel Rio Branco works the photographic image with an apparently direct procedure for capturing the object, he does not only focus on the object or subject, but draws their entire possibility of expression, between the indexical marks and symbolic representations. This intervention imprints another condition on the object: a mix of its physical presence in the world and a distinct nature, revealed in the image. His narrative constructions, observed in the production of his books and his relationship with the cinema\'s aesthetics, will be analyzed as unique elements that contribute with the photography debate in the field of Arts. I propose the investigation of the instability of the photographic sign within the historical concept of documentary photography in the arts. As a parameter, I adopt the artist\'s work, his motivations for relinquishing the documentary tradition, and the constitution of his poetics between the decades of 1970 and 1990.
