Asselin, Geneviève January 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Landscape Change In The South Prong Alafia River Basin

Koenig, Kimberly Sarah 06 December 2006 (has links)
West-central Florida has supplied much of the national and global demand for phosphate for over 100 years. The two main tributaries of the Alafia River, the North and South Prongs, have been extensively modified by the strip mining, benefaction, and chemical processing activities associated with the phosphate mining industry. Using aerial photos, an analysis of landscape change in the South Prong Alafia River drainage basin (357.4 km2) between 1940, 1970, and 2004 was conducted. A modified Florida Land Use, Land Cover, and Forms Classification System code (FLUCCS) was used to classify and measure change through the study period. Change in the study area is characterized by a dramatic decline in the area covered by natural lands and an increase in the area covered by anthropogenic activity. Increasing 43.8 km2 from 1940 -- 1970 and 199.96 km2 from 1970 -- 2004, phosphate mining activity is the primary force of landscape alteration in the study area. The historic headwaters of the main stream, Hooker's Prairie, is completely replaced by mining-induced landforms in 2004. Net change in landscape composition from 1940 -- 2004 is 1) phosphate mining (+243.76 km2), 2) surface hydrology (-113.13 km2), 3) urban (+2.42 km2), agriculture (+19.76 km2), and undisturbed / other (-139.66 km2). The results of this study indicate that the regional environment and hydrology have been heavily impacted by phosphate mining activity. The critical management of the industry's environmental impacts and reclamation practices is essential for the current and future health of the local environment and its inhabitants.

Stavby Carla Luraga v Praze / Carlo Lurago's Prague Buildings

KOUTKOVÁ, Ilona January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The purpose of the thesis is to remind the 400th birth anniversary of Carlo Lurago in 2015. The theoretical part deals with a life and a work of this architect. It contains mostly a description of Lurago´s buildings, it follows up to an artistic style, but also to the period in which he lived and he created these pieces. The thesis is focused on the architecture which Lurago created in Prague. There will be created a concept for the realization of the practical part, based on the analysis of these constructions. The practical part is focused on the Prague construction which is the main theme of the Author´s book form, it means a set of monochrome sheets in a box, all for the 400th anniversary of Carlo Lurago´s birth.

A (In)visibilidade dos trabalhadores de limpeza e conservação da Universidade Federal de Alagoas: imagens reveladas e histórias reinventadas / The (In) visibility of cleaning and conservation at the Federal University of Alagoas: images revealed and stories reinvented

Santos, Reinaldo Batista dos 17 October 2016 (has links)
This dissertation started from the hypothesis that the outsourced workers of cleaning and conservation, developing their professional activities in a public university in the Northeast of Brazil, are invisible as subjects practitioners within the university context. In this sense, the research aims to understand how the academic routine, forged by scientific and cultural practices in their different environments, subjectively affect these subordinate workers. Subjective effects that can reveal, by the traces, the written plot in their memory in which enroll their history of life. From a methodological point of view, we chose initially to address the workers in their daily lives from a casual conversation; and then establish a dialogue having as a theme the images of photographs taken by them, within the said educational institution, at our request. That is, an opening to the revelation - the space of "différance" (Derrida, 2002). The memories, forged in these images could bring us evidence about the experiences (LARROSA, 2002) of these subjects practitioners who (re)invent themselves in their narratives. Moreover, reveal, in the plurality of their knowledge, "the tricks of interests and different desires" (Certeau, 2009), in search, of course, of a social justice and, above all, a "cognitive justice" (SANTOS, 2004). We joined the aforementioned authors to articulate concepts and theoretical foundations that can sustain our discussions and, above all, our demands to want to look at the world from its inside out.

Assessment of photos in albums based on aesthetics and context / Évaluation de photos dans des albums basée sur l'esthétique et le contexte

Kuzovkin, Dmitry 21 June 2019 (has links)
An automatic photo assessment can significantly aid the process of photo selection within photo collections. However, existing computational methods approach this problem in an independent manner, by evaluating each image apart from other images in a photo album. In this thesis, we explore the modeling of photo context via a clustering approach for photo collections and the possibility of applying such context information in photo assessment. To better understand user actions within photo albums, we conduct experimental user studies, where we study how users cluster and select photos in photo collections. We estimate the level of agreement between users and investigate how the context, defined by similar photos in corresponding clusters, influences their decisions. After studying the nature of user decisions, we propose a computational approach to model user behavior. First, we introduce a hierarchical clustering method, which allows to group similar photos according to a multi-level similarity structure, based on visual descriptors. Then, the photo context information is extracted from the obtained cluster data and used to adapt a pre-computed independent photo score, using the statistics-based data and a machine learning approach. In addition, as the majority of recent methods for photo assessment are based on convolutional neural networks, we explore and visualize the aesthetic characteristics learned by such methods.

Arkeologins visuella gestaltning i lokala dagstidningar / The Visual Formation of Archaeology in Local Newspapers

Marcus, Sjöman January 2017 (has links)
Archaeology is a popular subject which the public has the opportunity to meet in a variety of contexts. In addition to television documentaries, non-fiction and popular science magazines, archaeology has even played a significant role in the fictional world. Apart from these sources, you can also find archaeology in news reports where the newspapers or the tv-stations acts like mediators of archaeological news based on the archaeological work that is currently ongoing in our present time. Since it is now a demand on Swedish contract archaeology to communicate it's results, the news media often gets to play the role as the link between the archaeologists and the public. This paper is based on an analyse of archaeological news presented in local newspapers. The aim of the study was to investigate the visual mediation of archaeology to the reader. The results showed that the visual mediation of archaeological news is not only based on the selection of photos or illustrations. According to this survey, visual mediation can also be constructed using particular words that either describe the factual characteristics or words that alludes to the fictional world. Archaeological news that are channeled through local newspapers tend to reflect a narrow view of the archaeological discipline. The reason for this can probably be seen as a consequence of the relationship between archaeology and the society. In order to broaden the currently prevailing image of the archaeological discipline, this paper arguments for a much closer and more deliberate collaboration between local news media and archaeologists.
