DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A VERSATILE AND INNOVATIVE TOOL TO ASSESS AND BENCHMARK SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE OF ORGANIZATIONS AND SUPPLY CHAINS

Cagatay Tasdemir (6580142) 10 June 2019 (has links)
<a>Global trends and factors, such as the increased level of globalization, climate change, resource scarcity, and awareness of social and environmental responsibilities, as well as fiercer competition and lower profit margins in all industries, force organizations to act to retain, regain, or sustain their competitive advantages for long-term survival. These trends and factors are historically known to bring about innovations that drive the evolution of industries. Sustainability is considered to be such an innovation to achieve fiscally sound, environmentally conscious, and socially progressive organizations and supply chains. Sustainable Development and Sustainability notions are among trending topics of 21st century. Elevated sustainability concerns of various stakeholders have been forcing members of all industries to evolve into their more environmentally and socially responsible versions. This study was initiated through a comprehensive literature review phase that reviewed 477 articles published in five major databases from 1990 to 2018. The purpose of this review was to assess the current state-of-the art on the subject of lean-driven sustainability. Based on descriptive and contextual analysis, synergies, divergences, and the extent of two-way permeability of lean and sustainability concepts from the perspective of intra- and inter-organizational operations were identified along with future research opportunities. Fundamental strengths and weaknesses of both concepts, existing strong synergies and untapped potential, along with their key contributors, the potential-use cases of lean tools to derive sustainable solutions are highlighted in this review. Next, based on the findings of systematic literature review, an innovative, holistic, versatile and scalable tool was developed to assess and benchmark sustainability performance of organizations and supply chains. The proposed framework was established upon trivet structure of Triple Bottom Line philosophy and fueled by Lean, Six-Sigma and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies for accurate and effective measurement of sustainability performance. Completeness of the framework was ensured through development of first-generation Key Performance Indicator (KPI) pool with 33 indicators, a unique work environment assessment mechanism for safety and environmental protection issues in terms of 11 risk categories and by construction of an ownership structure for ease of framework deployment. Proposed framework is expected to help with true sustainability performance improvement and benchmarking objectives at a range of business levels from facility to sectoral operations. Upon completion of the development phase, the Sustainability Benchmarking Tool (SBT) Framework was validated at the facility level within the context of value-added wood products manufacturing. Strengths and weaknesses of the system were identified within the scope of Bronze Frontier maturity level of the framework and tackled through a six-step analytical and quantitative reasoning methodology. The secondary objective of the validation phase was to document how value-added wood products industries can take advantage of natural properties of wood to become frontiers of sustainability innovation. In the end, True Sustainability performance of the target facility was improved by 2.37 base points, while economic and environmental performance was increased from being a system weakness to achieving an acceptable index score benchmark of 8.41 and system strength level of 9.31, respectively. Social sustainability score increased by 2.02 base points as a function of better gender bias ratio. The financial performance of the system improved from a 33% loss to 46.23% profit in the post-improvement state. Reductions in CO2 emissions (55.16%), energy consumption (50.31%), solid waste generation (72.03%), non-value-added-time (89.30%) and cost performance (64.77%) were other significant achievements of the study. In the end, SBT Framework was successfully validated at the facility level and target facility evolved into its leaner, cleaner and more responsible version of itself. Furthermore, manufacturing industries of all sorts are key stakeholders, which rely on universities to satisfy the demand for competent workforce. Society also expects universities to educate youth and contribute to their self-development by achieving both, scientific and intellectual knowledge saturation. To expand the contribution of the study to the body of knowledge in the fields of Sustainability and Modern Management techniques, an undergraduate level course curriculum that integrates modern management techniques and sustainability concepts with wood products industry dynamics was developed. Students’ pre- and post-education awareness of, and familiarity with sustainability, potential consequences of ignored sustainability issues, modern management techniques, global trends, innovation waves, and industry evolution were compared through a seventeen-question survey. Results showed that course content was successful at increasing sustainability awareness at both overall and individual sustainability pillar levels, At the end, 100% of students were able to develop complete understanding of various modern management techniques and stated that they felt confident to apply learnt skills to real life issues within their profession upon graduation. Overall, this study empirically documented how synergies between Lean, Sustainability, Six-Sigma and Life Cycle Assessment concepts outweigh their divergences, demonstrated viability of SBT Framework and presented a proven example of modern management techniques powered transdisciplinary sustainability curriculum.</a>

Nascimento, Alexandra Bulgarelli do 12 November 2010 (has links)
This work aims to set the basis for a health management by analyzing the key informations of 430 medical records, which were taken from two public hospitals in the city of São Paulo, in April 2010.The research showed that the records were different in both hospitals in most of the variables studied. Consequently, they had to be analysed distinctively. It was observed that, while the variables: gender, age, diagnosis, hospital discharge reasons, lengh of stay and medical cares were entirely recorded, variables like blood pressure, cardiac and breathing frequency, body temperature, pain, food, bath and locomotion were partially recorded. Considering the variables entirely recorded, it was verified that in the hospitals A and B, respectively, the most medical admission requirements were for adults between 30-59 years of age (35.9%, 42.3%), elderly aged 60 or older (22.8%, 16.3%) and children under 4 years old (20.1%, 17.2%). On the same way, children (4 a 5 days, 4 a 6 days) and elderly (2 a 6 days, 4 a 6 days) had longer lenght of stay. In hospital A respiratory system diseases (20.5%) were the leading cause of medical admissions followed by mental and behavioral disorders (14.4%), compared to hospital B, respiratory system diseases (15.4%) followed by circulatory system illnesses(13.5%). In both cases A and B, respectively, the basic care were more frequent on the hospital discharge (n=278, n=315) if compaired to admissions (n=271, n=234), while invasive care were more frequent in the admissions (n=505, n=618) if compaired to hospital discharge (n=201, n=208). Upong analyzing the presence of the variables partial record, it has occurred in hospital A at the time of admissions and medical discharges, respectively,: blood pressure (73.5%, 73.5%), cardiac frequency (72.1%, 71.6%), breathing frequency(39.1%, 29.3%), body temperature (89.3%, 80.5%), pain (12.6%, 11.2%), food (92.6%, 95.3%), bath (91.6%, 94.4%) and locomotion (94.9%, 95.8%), while in the the hospital B, it has occurred respectively;: blood pressure (80%, 73.5%), cardiac frequency (80.5%, 73%), breathing frequency (21.4%, 12.1%), body temperature (96.7%, 89.8%), pain (1.4%, 0.5%), food (100%, 99.5%), bath (99.1%, 99.1%) and locomotion (99.5%, 99.1%). The association between the variables: lenght of stay and number of cares at the time of hospital admissions and discharges with the other parameters, showed that the longer the length of stay and the greater the number of cares in admissions and discharges, the older are the inpatients and the greater are the number of diagnosis and the clinical and functional impairements.

The approach used for the analysis is qualitative and drew from the documentary research, which was based on data collected from minutes of both on-site and online meetings, agendas of work meetings and formative encounters, plannings, reports produced by the participants of the project and of CNPq (Brazil) researches, scientific production using data and projects developed during the formative process, and logs of the virtual environment. The formative documents were organized and grouped in three axes: the first included the official documents; the second had documents generated in the formative process; and the third viewed the developers' logs both during the process and in their classroom practice. The analysis allowed us to learn that the formative process happened in a dialogic, collaborative and cooperative manner, with the sharing of productions, reflection and reviewing of ideas, the collective search for solutions, the consensus, and the constant rethinking of actions enabled by the use of digital technology for data circulation, communication and collective decisions among the network members. This movement was shaped in a circular and ascending manner which was potentialized by the planning and management of the formative process as represented by the Project's Spiral. This process is represented by an ascending spiral movement, in which both individual and collective growth are developed by the participants. Such process is represented by the Spiral of the Formative Team in the Network of the UCA Project Tocantins, suggesting an innovation process to be considered for teacher development courses using ICDT. By understanding these processes, we can contribute for actions in teacher development courses - which use digital technologies as a basis - to potentialize the collective construction of knowledge, the development in networks, the participants' continuity and success, and also to promote technology integration with the curriculum heading towards the constitution of a formative web curriculum / A presente pesquisa tem o propósito de analisar a constituição das dinâmicas de planejamento e de gestão da formação contínua no Projeto UCA Tocantins (ocorrido de 2010 a 2013) com uso das TDIC.

Dilemas federativos e regionalização na saúde: o papel do gestor estadual do SUS em Minas Gerais / Dilemmas federal and regionalization in health: the role of the state manager of the Public Health Care System

Pereira, Adelyne Maria Mendes January 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-04T12:36:16Z (GMT). / This study examined the role of the state level in driving the process of regionalization of the Unified Health System in Minas Gerais between 2003 and 2007, in view of the dilemmas on Brazilian federalism and the particular configuration of the health system in the state. We identified factors related to federalism in Brazil (in its political, organizational and tax dimensions) and national regulation of decentralization of the Unified Health System that interfere with the driving state of the process of regionalization in health. It was noticed that regionalization in health is an old process in Minas Gerais, according to the territorial extension of the state and institutional capacity of the state level. However, implementation of health services was, historically, so uncoordinated and fragmented, due to inter regional differences, large number of municipalities, lack of rational parameters of distribution of services and gaps in the state's role in controlling such process. Aiming to overcome these problems, the Secretary of State for Health of the Minas Gerais uses multiple strategies and tools in conducting the process of regionalization. In planning, preparation, implementation and evaluation of the Master Plan of Regionalization; stimulation and support to micro regional management; and establishment of regional health system. In funding, regional allocation own resources the second criterion redistributable; and direction of investments depending on the targets agreed with the government of the state. In regulation, implementing the State System of Regulatory Assistance; and promotion of educational activities. In the provision of services, Secretary of State for Health opted for indirect administration by Hospital Foundation of Minas Gerais State. In the end, it discussed the potential and challenges of conducting state of the process of regionalization. The findings of this study suggest that regionalization in the health under state driving is possible, as the manager takes this role and develop mechanisms to overcome municipalization and internal fragmentation of the secretariat, restoring the practice of strategic planning, promoting effective coordination intermanaging and assuming specific functions to the advancement of regionalization.

Körner, Matthias January 2011 (has links)

The third paper adapts these tools to the financial management and controlling context in private companies highlighting the tools’ flexibility in managing uncertain and volatile environments. The fourth article is the first of two focusing on strategic management in family firms. It analyzes organizational ambidexterity as a factor explaining family firm performance.
