Bonneau-Crépin, Charlotte 15 December 2020 (has links)
The transformations brought upon by the rise of social networks and music streaming platforms have caused the birth of new ways to consume music. This thesis is about one of them, exclusive to fans of Korean popular music. More precisely, it is about a novel activity called mass-streaming, popular amongst the K-pop (Korean Pop) fan community. This practice consists in the use of specific methods that are geared towards the quickest rise possible in streams associated to a particular song on streaming platforms. The aim of this thesis is to determine the measure in which mass-streaming has an influence on the music industry and the fan community. Different conceptual models are applied in order to formulate an answer to that question, namely those of Monde des Arts (Becker 1984), symbolic capital (Bourdieu 1994) and subcultrual capital (Thornthon 2013). As a case study, it is Korean boyband Beyond The Scene (BTS) and its fan community that are studied. Data collection took place in two distinct phases. The first, which took place entirely on microblogging site Twitter, consisted in the creation of a collection of tweets about mass-streaming. The second was made up of a series of semi-directed interviews with music industry professionals. In order to present a complete picture of what mass-streaming is, a description of the historic context and causes that lead to its emergence is made, as well as the presentation of the methods used by fans. Finally, the different impacts of the studied practice are considered as different types of symbolic capital (economic, social, cultural, subcultural) in order to represent as precisely as possible the potential repercussions of this new practice on all parties involved in its functioning.

Bokenblom, Samuel, Ring, Albin January 2024 (has links)
In a fragmented media landscape, the Melody Festival (Melodifestivalen) is one of the few Swedish media productions that still gathers audiences for ritual media consumption. Despite its position as one of the largest media institutions in Swedish society, research regarding the event is limited and this bachelor study aims to counteract this. The aim of the study is to investigate what values and ideological assumptions about interpersonal relationships that are discursively constructed in the song lyrics performed at the Melody Festival. The study is based on critical discourse analysis, and Eva Illouz's sociological theories concerning relationships, as a theoretical framework. Every winning entry from every even year between 2002-2023 (a sample of 11 song lyrics) has been analyzed using critical discourse analysis. In line with previous research on pop music, the results of the study show how the most common type of relationship in the material is of a romantic nature. Love is frequently depicted metaphorically as an all-consuming force in accordance with Illouz. However, love as work (à la Illouz) is not represented in the material. The results also show how the private is prioritized over the societal where the relationship between “I” and “you” is the most prominent.

Threads of Identity: Marisol's Exploration of Self

Williams, Emily 01 January 2013 (has links)
Marisol Escobar, known in the 1960s as the "Latin Garbo," is a sculptor famous for showing with the Pop art greats. However, Marisol holds a curious position in art history, stranded between the formalism of the fifties' and sixties' male-dominated Pop movement and the conceptual experimentation and radicalism that followed. Trained as a draftsman and painter early in her career, Marisol's main body of work mostly consists of large-scale wooden and mixed-medium sculpture. Lesser known, her lithographs, drawings, collages and small figurines further prove her technical and artistic validity. Preferring to go by surname only, Marisol’s quiet yet intense observation pinpoints the overriding human elements present in the objects of her scrutiny. Most notable for turning her gaze inwards, her self-portraiture defies easy categorization. Meshing American art and non-Western art styles while bridging the gap between intellectual understanding and empathetic approachability, Marisol represents a unique perspective that remains relevant today. Marisol's approach to self-portraiture is, first and foremost, in service to the exploration of her own identity. Furthermore, her choice of subject matter, artistic methodology and style appear closely aligned with Postmodern discourse. Each period of her work from the 1950s to the present day includes different guises and methods that subtly critique societal roles and norms, all presented through the lens of the artist's acute wit. Internationalism, gender roles, and explorations of identity are inherent in each of her works, proving that Marisol deserves further examination to explore her relation to Postmodern thought.

Pettersson, Mattias January 2013 (has links)
Thepurposeof this paper is to examinethe Swedish-‐speaking poplyrics in 2000's and 2010’s. By doing a textual analysis of two Swedish-‐language poplyrics and a contextualization, I intend to try to see how they portray themselves, and attempt to discoverthe common denominator for Swedish-‐speaking poplyrics during these specified years. The theoretical perspective used is pop music's text and purpose the personal ‐ authentic ‐ created in the Swedish-‐speaking poplyrics, how identity plays into the creation of the Swedish-‐speaking poplyrics and how the eclectic pop music is inspired by various references in the creation of these. By doing a deep analysis of two Swedish-‐language poplyrics I try to find out what makes it personal ‐ authentic ‐ in these lyrics and by contextualize how it is created, I intend to see commonalities in the alternative popgenre. I conclude that the main goal of writing in Swedish is that it becomes more personal and closer to Swedish listeners. I conclude that the personal - authentic ‐ created through the use of the I‐perspective, Swedish culture references, geographical place names and some with a sense of inadequacy for expectations of the text I in relation to theworld.

If I had a voice I'd sing: the relation between the forest and the identity in music videos by Fever ray and Iamamiwhoami

Johansson, Oskar January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to investigate how the forest can be used to mirror the identity. Indoing so, music videos by Fever Ray and Iamamiwhoami are being analyzed. The portrayalconsists of two short stories. In these, the relation to the forest is investigated on a moreindividual level. The method is more searching than theorizing. The essay analyzes musicvideos, with a gender perspective, as images and metaphors. Theorists used are amongothers Jean Baudrillard, Timothy Morton and Judith Butler. From their theories the thesisinvestigates the values and assumptions that can be said to constitute the representation of theforest and the identity in the videos. The result is the image of a fragmented world, unwillingto come to concrete conclusions. On one hand the music videos show individuals who workswith the overtaking of given cultural images of the forest and gender. On the other hand a willto reject the same images can be seen. Likewise, the portrayal shows individuals who struggleto come to terms with their place in the given order but never really succeeds.

Changes and Context in the Role of Women in the 1960s Visual Arts Environment: A Case Study

Harper, Cheryl January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines changes in gender attitudes between the years 1962 and 1967 as seen through the activities of a group of female volunteers at a regional community center, specifically the Fine Arts committee of the Arts Council at the Young Men's and Women's Hebrew Association in Philadelphia. I demonstrate how the women were conditioned both within and outside their community to accept a subservient role to husbands and male hierarchy. By considering two of the committee's major projects, one that took place in 1962 and the other in 1967, and examining the Jewish community's primary newspaper during the same period, I compare and contrast the attitudes of the female "volunteer" in general and this specific group of more rebellious housewives whose interests were focused in the visual arts. Between the two major projects, examples of sociological theory are examined in order to follow the paradigm shift towards emerging feminism. Over a period of five years these women reassessed their role as housewives, and many eventually participated in professional life outside the home. The specific accomplishments of the Fine Arts Committee are compared, from the first major exhibition in 1962, ART 1963/A New Vocabulary to the last significant project in 1967, the Museum of Merchandise. / Art History

The Construction of K-pop Female Idol Groups in Documentaries: a Gender Analysis

Wen, Jie January 2024 (has links)
This study examines the construction of the image of K-pop female idol groups and the presentation of postfeminist discourses through a critical discourse analysis of three official documentaries of three K-pop female groups: Blackpink: Light Up the Sky (2020), Mamamoo: Where Are We Now (2022), and Twice: Seize the Light (2020). The study aims to explore how these documentaries present K-pop idols on/off stage and how the K-pop industry employs postfeminist discourses to construct femininity and female empowerment. The study addresses the following research questions: how do the three documentaries construct the image of K-pop female idol groups? In what ways do the documentaries demonstrate elements of postfeminist discourse? By looking at the concept of girl crush in K- pop culture, the study found that the three groups presented the image of girl crush in different ways and to varying degrees, with traits such as self-confidence, power, and sexuality. Blackpink’s double image of strong and powerful onstage and innocent and cute off-stage reflects both traditional and modern expectations of women. Mamamoo’s documentary highlights bold sexual expression and diverse gender representation, situating them as icons of postfeminist empowerment. Twice’s documentary emphasizes authenticity and an affective connection with their fandom. Despite these narratives of empowerment, the analysis also reveals underlying gender inequalities in the K-pop industry, where female idols have limited influence and the industry remains male-dominated. The study contributes to an understanding of K-pop culture and its gender representations, highlighting the tension between empowerment and traditional gender norms.
