[en] REVERSED FASHIONISM: EXPRESSION OF THE PRECARIOUSNESS OF WORK BEHIND THE SCENES OF FASHION / [pt] FASHIONISMO ÀS AVESSAS: EXPRESSÃO DA PRECARIZAÇÃO DO TRABALHO NOS BASTIDORES DA MODAALINE LOURENCO DE OLIVEIRA 01 November 2018 (has links)
[en] The present dissertation Reversed fashionism: expression of the precariousness of work behind the scenes of fashion has as main objective to analyze the expressions of the precariousness of work in the fashion industry, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The theme is approached from the crisis of capitalism and its strategies of overcoming, with highlight to its refutations in the world of work, in particular the world of fashion. The strategies adopted by capitalism in general and by the fashion industry as far as the more specific interests of this study are concerned profoundly affect the working class and unfold in important changes in the social protection of labor. The research developed was about the overexploitation of work and the various forms of precarious work, taking as an empirical field the fashion center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, where it was possible to observe female work as one of its greatest expressions, besides conditions and degrading labor relations. The study did not intend to make a historical rescue on the development of fashion or define it precisely, but rather to understand it, especially in the field of clothing production, as a system that gains strength in a certain historical period, where labor and consumption, within the framework of capitalist society, are fundamental for its maintenance. Based on this contextualization, the research sought to reveal how clothing workers and / or those working for garments and factions that provide services to clothing brands, therefore, essential subjects in the production of the pieces marketed by renowned brands, are not included in the world of glamor created by this branch, that is, the verse that comes to the public. On the contrary, these workers do not participate in this world and suffer from degrading conditions of work and life, that is, the reverse (reverse) of fashionism. Thus, the focus was not on fashion, but on the fashion industry and, along with it, on the expressions of the precariousness of work in Brazil today.

This study focuses on cases of moral harassment as denounced in labor lawsuits by workers
claiming compensation for moral damage, under the jurisdiction of the Regional Labor Court
of the State of Bahia (Brazil) from 2001 to 2010, a period in which the number of lawsuits
rose from one to 989. A database with quantitative and qualitative information was assembled
from the analysis of 3,249 labor lawsuits. We aimed at apprehending the meaning of the
humiliations, swearing and ill treatment by taking into account the workers’ and the
witnesses’ own speeches, the accounts of which, extracted from the lawsuits, have the
potential to show the degree of exploitation endured by the workforce and the extent to which
current work relations have been rendered precarious. The study proposal of this thesis, within
the field perspective of work sociology, is to view moral assessment as a strategy of
domination in a context of ever-increasing precarious work from the social standpoint. In
recent times, the exploitation of workers has been intensified by violent management
methods, and moral harassment has become the best tool, as a management strategy, to foster
a policy towards ever-increasing precarious work relations. Moral harassment, according to
the workers’ accounts in the lawsuits, is the coercion mechanism used by the corporations to
impose the work place in the current productive context and can be considered as a strategy
towards precarious work relations, the management method of which consists of the
permanent perpetration of psychologically and morally violent acts. Moral harassment was
shown to result not from interpersonal relationships, but from the current capitalist strategies
of management and work organization. Moral harassment, as an act of violence that morphs
into capital-work relations, is both the old component of coercive methods aimed at
organizing the work and the new phenomenon of work management linked to the process of
rendering work increasingly precarious. The aim of moral harassment is not merely to
persecute and expel the worker from the workplace, but also to control his/her actions
effectively in order to assure the achievement of productivity goals. The concept of moral
harassment advanced in this thesis views moral assessment as a management strategy to
control the worker, whose working conditions nowadays, more than ever before, have been
rendered precarious, thereby causing him/her to become defenseless, docile, dominated and
without resistance. That is why moral harassment is one of the main ways to render work
precarious, being a (new) way for the capital to dominate and exploit the workforce.

The present scenario of the world of work, with its global competitiveness and the increasing precariousness of work, it was the starting point for this research that aimed to analyze the activity of psychologists organizational in outsourcing companies, relating them with the characteristics of the contemporary context. Based on the theory of the ergology, of the Yves Schwartz, whose the fundamental concept, that there is a prescribed work (which is requested, by another person, that there is not the professional) and real work (which is how the work activity actually happens), and among them there is always a distance. This fact causes the subject to perform a management use of himself, by himself and others, which are implicate in their own subjectivity and values, as well as the values and norms of the society itself. That process management, Schwartz appoints dramatic use of self. Then, a survey was conduct socio historical qualitative, which aimed to identify the prescribed activity psychologists on such companies, as well as analyze how these professionals perform their activity before the real is presented to them, pointing here evidence of the precarious aspects that compose their work activity. It was identified, also, the management that the subject does himself, by himself and by others, in order to relate the re-norms that underlie the actual activity of psychologists with the values and standard that cross the subject himself and society contemporary work. Came up as a result of the fact that the activities prescribed for these professionals are still primarily recruitment and selection of staff. Such activities are constantly transfixed by the logic of precariousness, which refers to the high speed of the process, the recovery by productivity, the search for the lowest cost and highest profit, regardless of commitment to human. It was noted that psychologists are inserted in the surveyed companies use management itself, emphasizing the logic of the market in their choices, and that their values sometimes are consistent with this logic. Faced with such evidence, reiterated the need to recover a commitment most critical action of psychologists, recognizing the priority of commitment to the human being, wherever they operates.

Os motoboys no globo da morte: circulação no espaço e trabalho precário na cidade de São Paulo / Motoboys in the globe of death: circulation in space and precarious work in the city of São PauloRicardo Barbosa da Silva 14 December 2009 (has links)
The motoboys professional activity is a very recent urban phenomenon and increasingly integrated into the urban landscape of São Paulo. Because of its rapid and exponential growth, allied to the dynamics and nature of its professional activity, 8 they become targets certain and constant in several controversies in traffic in São Paulo. However, this research aims to demystify the emergence of this professional activity beyond a sense of spontaneity, as well as, dislocating the focus of its dynamics on the conflicts in traffic. But, besides all that, try to understand the nature of this professional activity as a product and necessity a historical context of fin de siècle, revealing some of the socio-spatial transformations in Sao Paulo city in the transition from the XX for the XXI century, embodying two poles of the same problem wich are the new condition of the city and the world of work.

Coercion and Consent among Employer-Sponsored and Dependent Visa Holders: A Study of Indian Workers in the U.S. Information Technology SectorJangeti, Neha 05 1900 (has links)
Highly educated and skilled Indian nationals are the largest recipients of H-1B visas in the US. An employer must be willing to sponsor an H-1B work visa for the worker to continue to live and work in the US. This stipulation has granted US employers unprecedented power over H-1B visa holders, which can be understood as status coercion; employers have state-sanctioned power to threaten or discharge a worker from their status, i.e., visa status, which interconnects work and migration status. While the expansive power of employers to curtail a worker's status is one factor driving the ongoing coercive conditions, the other factor is precarious work. There is a gap in the literature in understanding what occurs at the intersection of status coercion and precarious work, especially within high-skilled information technology (IT) jobs. For instance, how does status coercion operate for employer-sponsored H-1B visa holders? Is it similar for dependent visa workers on H-4 EAD visas that rely on their spouse's H-1B, and F-1 OPT visa workers who have employment authorization from USCIS? Lastly, do these visa workers ever resist status coercion? In this study, I draw on twelve in-depth, semi-structured interviews of Indian nationals in the IT sector on H-1B, F-1 OPT STEM, or H-4 EAD visas. Findings suggest these workers experience greater status coercion than non-visa holders due to their visa status. Also, H-1B, F-1 OPT STEM, and H-4 EAD visa workers experience greater status coercion regardless of whether their visa is employer-sponsored, employment authorized by USCIS or a dependent visa. The consequences of coercion are that these workers are underemployed, overworked, given limited access to claims-making, and subjected to repetitive tasks on outdated technology. Yet, workers also exercised agency and ingenuity in their interconnected migration and employment trajectories. I find that visa workers ‘game' the US visa system via ‘visa hopping' from one visa to the next to ensure they can extend their stay and work in the US. While workers continuing to stay and work shows their compliance and consent to work in coercive conditions, I argue that gaming the US visa system can be understood as a form of resistance that showcases visa holders' creative agency.

[pt] BASTIDORES DA INDÚSTRIA DA MODA CARIOCA: EXPRESSÕES DA PRECARIZAÇÃO DO TRABALHO / [en] BEHIND THE SCENES OF RIO S FASHION INDUSTRY: EXPRESSIONS OF PRECARIOUS WORKALINE LOURENCO DE OLIVEIRA 23 November 2023 (has links)
[en] The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the expressions of precarious
work in the fashion industry in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s basic
premise is that strategies adopted by capitalism in general and by the the fashion
industry in particular deeply affects the working class and brings important
changes in work relations. In despite of the glamourous facade the fashion world
there is a less fanciful side to this industry: the exploitation of the workforce as a
fundamental pratice. In this way, we will get closer to some of the important
elements that make up the fashion world but which above all are part of
capitalist development, such as the organization and division of labor together with
all their consequences in industry, technology, territory and social relations. This
tip of the iceberg revealed some deep expressions of the precariousness of work
in the fashion industry. To this end, bibliographical research was carried out,
interviews with researchers on the topic were carried out and an online survey was
also published on a social network aimed at seamstresses who are part of online
job search groups, which allowed us to check information that contributes to
reinforce the idea that the fashion industry brings with it the trait of precarious
work and its inevitable and deep articulation with capitalism.

Patterns of Precarity in Older Workers: A Latent Profile ApproachNeal, Alissa N. 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Over the past three decades, the workforce has become more age-diverse, leading organizations to recognize the importance of supporting the well-being, motivation, health, and productivity of older workers. Previous research has highlighted the challenges faced by older workers, including ageism, health declines, financial constraints on retirement, and caregiving responsibilities. However, the literature often treats older workers as a homogeneous group, neglecting the significant heterogeneity within this population. This study addressed this gap by adopting a person-centered approach to investigate the diverse experiences of older workers. By leveraging the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT) as a conceptual framework, this study examined how different combinations of working conditions (i.e., job insecurity, income inadequacy, lack of work protections, and vulnerability to mistreatment) relate to psychological constructs and work-related outcomes among older workers. Data were collected from 549 workers over the age of 50 (M=59.24, SD=5.85) within the United States and analyzed using latent profile analysis. The results identified four distinct profiles of older workers: Unprecarious, Bridge Workers, Detached, and Precarious. The profiles were qualitatively and quantitatively different, with the Unprecarious profile characterized by low levels of all indicator variables, and the Precarious profile characterized by high levels of all indicator variables. Detached participants reported feeling stuck in their jobs, and Bridge Workers reported high income inadequacy and feeling unprotected at work, but low job insecurity and vulnerability to mistreatment. Unprecarious participants reported the highest levels of need satisfaction, well- being, and life satisfaction, and the Precarious participants reported the lowest levels on all outcomes, with the Bridge Workers and Detached participants in between.
Overall, this study sheds light on the heterogeneity within the older worker population and highlights the importance of considering various combinations of working conditions in understanding their experiences, thus advancing our understanding of this diverse segment of the workforce. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

"There's just nothing out there for people like us": The Experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ Carer-Employees in CanadaGeffros, Sophie January 2023 (has links)
This thesis extends prior research on LGBT caregivers and carer-employees by employing a mixed-methods approach to investigate the intersecting factors of identity, employment type, and geographical location on the experiences of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (2SLGBTQ+) caregivers in Canada. These caregivers are broadly absent from both the carer-employee and LGBT caregiving literature, and this dissertation offers an initial attempt to correct this.
It begins with a quantitative study involving 2SLGBTQ+ carer-employees, assessing how their identity and experiences of discrimination influence their quality of life, work life, and willingness to seek workplace accommodations for caregiving responsibilities.
Subsequently, a qualitative component delves into how employment type shapes these experiences, with a particular focus on how insecure customer service workers and those employed in unionized pink-collar work navigate work-care conflicts. This section also examines the impact of non-traditional caregiving dynamics on the ability of these caregivers to navigate such conflicts.
Lastly, it explores how past and current experiences of discrimination, non-conventional relationships, and geographical location affect the capacity of 2SLGBTQ+ carer-employees to interact with healthcare providers and advocate for their care recipients.
This research offers a substantial contribution by bringing to the forefront a hitherto unaddressed population. The existing body of literature on carer-employees has overlooked the specific challenges faced by 2SLGBTQ+ carer-employees, and the LGBT caregiving literature has similarly overlooked the role of employment in shaping the experiences of these caregivers. Furthermore, it underscores the significance of geographical location for 2SLGBTQ+ caregivers in rural and remote areas and highlights the experiences of midlife and younger caregivers, particularly those providing care for individuals experiencing severe mental illness. It concludes with discussions of the policy implications of this research. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis examines and explores the experiences of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (2SLGBTQ+) carer-employees in Canada. These caregivers balance their unpaid care work with their paid employment, and face barriers when navigating care and work that are related to their 2SLGBTQ+ identity.
Building on research that has identified that LGBT caregivers have unique needs and characteristics, and on research that highlights that individuals attempting to balance unpaid care work with paid employment face significant challenges when attempting to do so, this research brings these two fields together to examine how 2SLGBTQ+ identity impacts these experiences. In particular, it highlights that these caregivers experience poorer quality of life and worklife, that type of work and non-traditional caregiving dynamics may leave these caregivers more vulnerable to negative consequences associated with work-care conflicts, and that experiences of discrimination and concerns regarding confidentiality and anonymity for rural and northern 2SLGBTQ+ caregivers shape their ability to successfully navigate healthcare systems.
