Práticas em educação ambiental no ensino formal: a promoção de competências pró-ambientais para a aquisição do auto-governo

Searching to understand the impact of the results gotten with environmental education, he verified himself if pupils who attend a course average education in public schools demonstrate pro- environmental behavior after their participation in a project of environmental education. It was analyzed an acquisition of the levels of environmental ability in the pupils of average education that have participated of activities in environmental education in relation the pupils that have not participated of them, applying activity-test to investigate the acquisition of the functional levels of the proenvironmental abilities, in pertaining to school unit who have developed projects in environmental education and in pertaining to school unit that have not developed them. Into the school unit that developed activity in environmental education - plantation of trees of Atlantic Mata - was chosen by possessing a programming of education with applied stages planned and diversified throughout 5 years, for two professors, of geography and sciences. Such characteristics had allowed to verify beyond, of the environmental impact produced by the activity in itself, also the result of the learning, as for the acquisition of abilities that had led to the conquest of the auto-government.The activitytests had been elaborated by the researcher and were based on the taxonomy proposal for Ribes (1990) for the acquisition of functional abilities. The abilities possess five levels: contextual, suplemental, selective, referencial substitute and not referencial substitute, that can be adapted to evaluate the pro- environmental abilities in the context of the environmental education. These activities daily had been tested by four specialists of the environmental area to verify the adequacy of the content in relation to the ability level, as to guide the formularization of the punctuation criterion. Also daily they had been tested in groups of pupils who had not participated of the research to verify the time expense for its accomplishment and the agreement of what he was considered in each activity. When carrying through the plantation of 66 native vegetal species of the Brazilian territory the majority of the pupils acquired pro-environmental abilities. The performance of the pupils was shaped of form to complete tasks of diverse degrees of functionality that had evolved of the actions simplest to the actions most complex. The pupils had learned to manipulate environmental variable, of form that these had affected its behavior, favoring the occurrence of useful answers for the solution of problems, what he can mean independence and autonomy. The environmental Education also can be used the estimated ones of the Analysis of the Behavior to plan and to evaluate actions that result in impacts in the environmental preservation / Para se alcançar a sustentabilidade ambiental por meio da educação, práticas em educação ambiental proporcionam ao educando a aquisição de habilidades e competências pró-ambientais. Para buscar entender o impacto dos resultados obtidos com educação ambiental, verificou-se se alunos que cursam o ensino médio em escolas públicas demonstram comportamento pró-ambiental depois de participarem de um projeto em educação ambiental. Analisou-se a aquisição dos níveis de competência ambiental nos educandos do ensino médio que tenham participado de atividades em educação ambiental em relação a educandos que não tenham participado delas, aplicando atividades-teste para investigar a aquisição dos níveis funcionais das competências pró-ambientais, em unidade escolar que tenha desenvolvido projetos em educação ambiental e em unidade escolar que não os tenham desenvolvido. A unidade escolar que desenvolveu atividade em educação ambiental - plantio de árvores da Mata Atlântica - foi escolhida por possuir uma programação de ensino com etapas planejadas e diversificadas aplicadas ao longo de 5 anos, por dois professores, o de geografia e de ciências. Tais características permitiram verificar além, do impacto ambiental produzido pela atividade em si, também o resultado da aprendizagem, no que se refere à aquisição de competências que levaram à conquista do auto-governo. As atividades-teste foram elaboradas pela pesquisadora e baseou-se na taxonomia proposta por Ribes (1990) para a aquisição de competências funcionais. As competências possuem cinco níveis: contextual, suplementar, seletivo, substitutivo referencial e substitutivo não referencial, que podem ser adaptadas para avaliar as competências próambientais no contexto da educação ambiental. Estas atividades foram pré-testadas por quatro especialistas da área ambiental para verificar a adequação do conteúdo em relação ao nível de competência, como para orientar a formulação do critério de pontuação.Também foram pré-testadas em grupos de alunos que não participaram da pesquisa para verificar o tempo gasto para sua realização e o entendimento do que foi proposto em cada atividade. Ao realizarem o plantio de 66 espécies vegetais nativas do território brasileiro a maioria dos alunos adquiriu competências pró-ambientais. O desempenho dos alunos foi modelado de forma a completar tarefas de graus de funcionalidade diversos que evoluíram das ações mais simples às ações mais complexas. Os alunos aprenderam a manipular variáveis ambientais, de forma que estas afetaram seu comportamento, favorecendo a ocorrência de respostas úteis para a solução de problemas, o que pode significar independência e autonomia. A Educação Ambiental também pode se valer dos pressupostos da Análise do Comportamento para planejar e avaliar ações que resultem em impactos na preservação ambiental

Natural and civic place attachment and the relation to pro-environmental behaviours in Trail and Nelson, British Columbia

The relation between place attachment and pro-environmental behaviour has not been thoroughly examined. Of the few studies to have investigated this, findings conflict (Uzzell, Pol, & Badenas, 2002; Vaske & Kobrin, 2001). Possibly, these inconsistencies relate to the definition of place attachment. The current study distinguished two dimensions of place attachment: social-symbolic (civic), and physical-natural. Data were collected from 104 community members in two proximate towns. Participants indicated their levels of natural and civic attachment, evaluated the current and future local environmental quality, and reported their pro-environmental behaviours. Greater place attachment was associated with more positive current evaluations in Trail. Surprisingly, environmental evaluations did not predict pro-environmental behaviour in either town. Both types of place attachment predicted pro-environmental behaviour in Nelson, but in Trail, only natural attachment was significant. Thus, for different cities, different types of place attachment will predict pro-environmental behaviour. Implications and directions for further research are discussed.

The Interpersonal Determinants of Green Purchasing: An assessment of the empirical record

abstract: This study investigates how well prominent behavioral theories from social psychology explain green purchasing behavior (GPB). I assess three prominent theories in terms of their suitability for GPB research, their attractiveness to GPB empiricists, and the strength of their empirical evidence when applied to GPB. First, a qualitative assessment of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), Norm Activation Theory (NAT), and Value-Belief-Norm Theory (VBN) is conducted to evaluate a) how well the phenomenon and concepts in each theory match the characteristics of pro-environmental behavior and b) how well the assumptions made in each theory match common assumptions made in purchasing theory. Second, a quantitative assessment of these three theories is conducted in which r2 values and methodological parameters (e.g., sample size) are collected from a sample of 21 empirical studies on GPB to evaluate the accuracy and generalize-ability of empirical evidence. In the qualitative assessment, the results show each theory has its advantages and disadvantages. The results also provide a theoretically-grounded roadmap for modifying each theory to be more suitable for GPB research. In the quantitative assessment, the TPB outperforms the other two theories in every aspect taken into consideration. It proves to 1) create the most accurate models 2) be supported by the most generalize-able empirical evidence and 3) be the most attractive theory to empiricists. Although the TPB establishes itself as the best foundational theory for an empiricist to start from, it's clear that a more comprehensive model is needed to achieve consistent results and improve our understanding of GPB. NAT and the Theory of Interpersonal Behavior (TIB) offer pathways to extend the TPB. The TIB seems particularly apt for this endeavor, while VBN does not appear to have much to offer. Overall, the TPB has already proven to hold a relatively high predictive value. But with the state of ecosystem services continuing to decline on a global scale, it's important for models of GPB to become more accurate and reliable. Better models have the capacity to help marketing professionals, product developers, and policy makers develop strategies for encouraging consumers to buy green products. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Att flyga eller inte flyga : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om klimatengagerade personers syn på flyget / To fly or not to fly : A qualitative study on environmental activists' view on aviation and climate change

Antalet flygresor har ökat markant i världen de senaste decennierna. Detta har medfört en ökning av flygets koldioxidutsläpp som därmed har gett en ökad påverkan på klimatet. Forskning angående människors syn på och uppfattning om flyget är relativt ny och forskning rörande ämnet är mer förekommande idag än för ett decennium sedan. Tidigare undersökningar är dock i stort sett eniga om att människor, både miljömedvetna och icke-miljömedvetna personer, inte tänker ändra på sina flygvanor och flyga mindre på grund av flygets klimatpåverkan. Denna studie undersöker klimatengagerade personers flygvanor och vad de har för syn på flyget och flygets påverkan på klimatet. Resultatet i studien skiljer sig från tidigare forskning genom att de klimatengagerade personerna i undersökningen antingen försöker begränsa sina flygresor eller inte längre flyger alls på grund av den klimatpåverkan en flygresa innebär. The low-cost hypothesis har använts som ett teoretiskt ramverk för att undersöka om det finns ett attitude-behavior gap. Det framkom att the low-cost hypothesis endast delvis kan appliceras och att det finns ett litet attitude-behavior gap hos de respondenter som flyger. Det finns inget attitude-behavior gap hos respondenterna som inte flyger. Det framkom även att sociala normer till viss del påverkar valet att flyga eller inte flyga.

Contribuições da psicologia ambiental para atividades e programas de educação ambiental / Contributions of environmental psychology for activities and programs of environmental education

Esta dissertação identifica contribuições da Psicologia Ambiental para Programas de Educação Ambiental descritos em dissertações do Mestrado em Ciências Ambientais da Universidade de Taubaté, defendidas no período 2001-2006. Das 125 dissertações foram identificadas 15 que apresentaram programas de Educação Ambiental. As categorias de análise foram: palavras-chave, objetivos propostos, sujeitos da pesquisa, e procedimentos utilizados. A análise evidenciou que: a Psicologia Ambiental implicitamente esteve presente em todos os trabalhos analisados; que Comportamentos Pró-ambientais foram explicitamente identificados nos procedimentos executados. Os Programas não relataram propostas de manutenção que possibilitassem a manutenção desses comportamentos. Programas de Educação Ambiental foram conduzidos em trabalhos de todas as áreas temáticas do mestrado e com populações diversificadas; confirmando o caráter multidisciplinar das Ciências Ambientais possibilitando a diferentes profissionais atuarem no campo da Educação Ambiental. Se visam principalmente a mudança de hábitos, atitudes e valores, e, em última instância, fazer que o sujeito se comporte de maneira pró-ambiental, Programas de Educação Ambiental visam portanto influenciar variáveis psicológicas. Discutiu-se assim a contribuição possível da Psicologia Ambiental para os Programas de Educação Ambiental. Esta disciplina pode instrumentalizar futuros pesquisadores na construção de metodologias adequadas ao fortalecimento e manutenção de comportamentos de cuidado com o ambiente e da promoção da identificação e interpretação de indicadores individuais e sociais como reforçadores desses comportamentos, e ainda criar condições para quantificar e qualificar Comportamentos Pró-ambientais. Conclui-se que a utilização dos conhecimentos produzidos pela Psicologia Ambiental poderá contribuir para a melhoria de Programas de Educação Ambiental, norteando seu planejamento e suas práticas. / This dissertation the contribution of Environmental Psychology to Environmental Education Activities and Programs described in dissertations of the Graduation Course in Environmental Sciences of the University of TaubatÃ, presented in the period from 2001 to 2006. Of 125 dissertations, 15 were identified as presenting Environmental Education Programs. The analysis categories were: keywords, proposed objectives, research subjects, and procedures utilized. The analysis evidenced that Environmental Psychology was implicitly present in all the works analyzed and that Pro-Environmental Behaviors were explicitly identified in the procedures executed. The Programs did not report any maintenance proposals for these behaviors to be kept. Environmental Education Programs were conducted in works of all thematic areas of the masters degree program and with diverse populations, confirming the multidisciplinary character of the Environmental Sciences that has made it possible for many professionals to act in the field of Environmental Education. The goal is mainly the change of habits, attitudes, and values, and, ultimately, to make the subject behave in a pro-environmental manner, therefore Environmental Education Programs seek to influence the psychological variables. Thus the possible contribution of Environmental Psychology for the Environmental Education Programs was discussed. This discipline can give some tools for the future researchers in the construction of methodologies that are appropriate for the strengthening and maintenance of caring behaviors towards the environment, and for the promotion of the identification and interpretation of individual and social indicators which reinforce these behaviors and create conditions to quantify and qualify Proenvironmental Behaviors. The conclusion is that the utilization of knowledge produced by Environmental Psychology can contribute to the betterment of Environmental Education Programs, guiding their planning and practices.

China's Social Credit System and Pro-Environmental Behaviour

Climate change is an enormous challenge which, if not addressed will have detrimental impacts across the globe. This problem is largely produced by human behaviour. Therefore, strategies aimed at influencing behaviour are necessary in addressing this issue. Governments are currently utilising informational campaigns, rewards, penalties, nudging and structural changes to influence pro-environmental behaviour. Although these methods are creating change, it is far from sufficient to address the massive and urgent issue of climate change. Therefore, alternative strategies should be considered. As such, this thesis aims to explore the effectiveness and the extent to which the Social Credit System, as it is being developed in China, can be considered an alternative strategy for producing pro-environmental behaviour. A framework to analyse and describe the SCS was developed by executing a literature review of key environmental behaviour models and intervention strategies aimed at producing pro-environmental behaviour. It concludes that the Social Credit System utilises a variety of methods similar to the behaviour models and interventions reviewed in this thesis, especially as far as rewards and punishments are concerned. However, surveillance stands out as a distinct means of intervention that is not utilised outside China to produce pro-environmental behaviour. The discussion suggests that this aspect of the system might be effective in contributing to address the challenge of climate change due to its coercive nature.
