Fleets and Prouinciae in the Roman Republic : institutions, administration and the conceptualisation of empire between 260 and 49 B.C

Day, Simon Christopher January 2014 (has links)
This research examines how, when and why the Romans assigned and defined the tasks of preparing and commanding fleets during the Republic. In doing so, it brings new evidence to bear on the wider debates about the nature of the prouincia and the institutional and administrative development of the Roman empire. The communis opinio is that a prouincia originally represented a functional “sphere of operation” that was allotted or assigned to a magistrate and that it only later developed a geographical meaning with territorial connotations through the process of “provincialisation.” This research challenges that view through an analysis of the evidence for the definition, assignment and practical use of the prouincia classis and other prouinciae connected with the command of fleets. Drawing upon and analysing the lists of administrative arrangements to be found in the “annalistic” sections of the surviving books of Livy’s History, it argues that prouinciae were defined in specific geographical and functional terms long before the development of permanent territorial empire. This offers a new perspective which points to and elucidates the flexible use of the prouincia as a means of separating magistrates and promagistrates in space or by function in space. It argues that the rationale for this was to limit conflicts between commanders over command and triumphal rights. By combining evidence from a wide range of sources after the loss of Livy’s History from 167, the research shows that the above rationale for demarcating prouinciae still applied in the first century B.C. However, it also demonstrates that there were significant changes with the assignment of vast Mediterranean-wide naval prouinciae in the first half of the first century B.C. It argues that the definition of these prouinciae was made possible by the development of a singular collective Mediterranean-wide ora maritima, which was brought about by the Romans’ increasing “acknowledgement of empire.” The negative political and institutional implications of these developments are also assessed. Finally, in discussing the above, this research also provides new insights into the role and auctoritas of the Senate, the function and freedom of magistrates, and the Romans’ conceptualisation of their empire.

A contemporary winter count

Scott, Kerry M., University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2006 (has links)
The past is the prologue. We must understand where we have been before we can understand where we are going. To understand the Blackfoot Nation and how we have come to where we are today, this thesis examines our history through Indian eyes from time immemorial to the present, using traditional narratives, writings of early European explorers and personal experience. The oral tradition of the First Nations people was a multi-media means of communication. Similarly, this thesis uses the media of the written word and a series of paintings to convey the story of the Blackfoot people. This thesis provides background and support, from the artist’s perspective, for the paintings that tell the story of the Blackfoot people and the events that contributed to the downfall of the once-powerful Nation. With the knowledge of where we have been, we can learn how to move forward. / x, 153 leaves : col. ill. ; 29 cm

The Dutch Bride : images of marriage and social, religious and political uses of matrimonial symbolics in the Dutch Republic, 17th Century

Thomas, Romain 23 October 2012 (has links)
"Iconic" society par excellence, the United Provinces in the seventeenth century is a place where images play a tremendous role in daily life. Meanwhile, marriage is an institution at the heart of a rehabilitation process and of a differentiation process of confessional identities involving dogmatic and disciplinary provisions. It is also a fundamental anthropological experience, experienced by everybody in the society, be it as actor or spectator. In this perspective, the matrimonial images pervade the whole visual culture of Dutch society and are at the crossroads of social, religious and political issues, at different scales, through the symbolics they involve and the social uses they are submitted to. How are confessional differences articulated to them? How are social distinctions manifested? What symbolic benefits do social actors get out of visual metaphors of marriage? Finally, how do these images interact with the reader-viewer? Through a diverse corpus of sources (illustrated books or pamphlets, single-leaf engravings, but also paintings and medals), the thesis addresses these questions by examining successively how images accompany prescriptive discourses on marriage, how they are involved in the urban elites weddings and during wedding festivities for princes, but also how they can metaphorically embody the link between the believer and God, or, paradoxically, that between the Prince of Orange and the Fatherland, in a political system claimed to be a Republic.

Vandervellen, Pascale 21 May 2007 (has links)

Saint-Laurent, Rachelle 04 1900 (has links)
The classical theory of federalism promotes symmetry: federated entities should be treated in the same way by the Constitution. However, a constitutional text can sometimes provide for asymmetries, i.e. permanent differences in the status of provinces within the central institutions, or in the legislative powers vested in them by the Constitution. Accordingly, this thesis seeks to answer the following question: what are the constitutional asymmetries that exist between Canadian provinces, and how are they treated by the apex court? The corollary of this question is to determine whether the asymmetries found in the Constitution are reinforced or attenuated by judicial interpretation. Since studies on asymmetry have mainly emanated from the field of political science, the first chapter outlines the theoretical arguments found in this discipline regarding the foundations and limits of asymmetrical arrangements within a federation. The second chapter analyzes asymmetries in provincial representation within central institutions, namely the Senate and the Supreme Court. The third chapter focuses on asymmetries in terms of legislative powers, taking as a case study section 94 of the Constitution Act, 1867, as well as the constitutional requirement of parliamentary, legislative and judicial bilingualism that is only imposed on three Canadian provinces. This analysis leads us to conclude that asymmetries in provincial representation within central institutions are reinforced by judicial interpretation. On the other hand, the Supreme Court seems more hesitant to the idea that there may be asymmetries between provinces in terms of their legislative powers. This sometimes leads the Court to attenuate the asymmetries that the Constitution provided for in this area. Finally, this thesis finds that the foundations and advantages associated with asymmetry by political science theorists are reflected in the Court's reasoning when it reinforces asymmetries between provinces. Similarly, the theoretical limits, recognized by political scientists, to the asymmetries admitted between federated entities are reflected in the Court's rulings that tend to favor symmetry.

Renaud, Alain 25 April 2018 (has links)

Fundamental concepts of Limba traditional religion and its effects on Limba Christianity and vice versa in Sierra Leone in the past three decades

Conteh, Prince Sorie 30 June 2004 (has links)
This study is the product, chiefly, of fieldwork, undertaken in Sierra Leone, which sought to interview and experience contemporary Limba religio-cultural practices. Using a systematic approach, the goal was to provide a broader understanding of Limba religion, as well as to discover the effect of Limba religiosity, and the tenacity with which the Limba hold to their culture and religion, on the National Pentecostal Limba Church (NPLC) over the past three decades. The study begins with an introduction, which outlines its objectives and structure, the research methods, and its general outline. This is followed by a basic introduction to the socio-history of the Limba people, their origin, environment, language, politics, economy and other socio-cultural characteristics, in order to provide an understanding of the background on which their religion is formed. The heart of the study is a detailed examination of Limba religious beliefs and their intersection with Christianity. It includes a definition of Limba religion and its components. This seeks to identify the current state of Limba religion amidst the changes it has experienced and continues to experience as a result of internal and external influences, and to provide a template for this study, an analysis of the Limba belief in a supreme creator God whom they call Kanu Masala, his epithets, attributes and activities, Limba worship and worship methods, the Limba understanding of the spirit world, humankind, sin and salvation, and the roles of sacred specialists. The study concludes with an examination of the causes of the tenacious loyalty with which some Limba Christians hold to their traditional religious beliefs and practices, their reluctance to part with them, and the effects of their dual religiosity on the NPLC, as well as the church's response, and the resulting reciprocal effects over the past three decades in Sierra Leone. This study fills a gap in the extant literature about the ethno-theological landscape of Sierra Leone, and provides a detailed study on the intersection of African Traditional Religion and Christianity. / Systematic Theology & Theological Ethics / D.Th.
