Low-complexity algorithms for the fast and safe charge of Li-ion batteries

Goldar Davila, Alejandro 24 February 2021 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis proposes, validates, and compares low-complexity algorithms for the fast-and-safe charge and balance of Li-ion batteries both for the single cell case and for the case of a serially-connected string of battery cells. The proposed algorithms are based on a reduced-order electrochemical model (Equivalent Hydraulic Model, EHM), and make use of constrained-control strategies to limit the main electrochemical degradation phenomena that may accelerate aging, namely: Lithium plating in the anode and solvent oxidation inthe cathode. To avoid the computational intensiveness of solving an online optimization as in the Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework, this thesis proposes the use of Reference Governor schemes. Variants of both the Scalar Reference Governors (SRG) and the Explicit Reference Governors (ERG) are developed to deal with the non-convex admissible region for the charge of a battery cell, while keeping a low computational burden. To evaluate the performance of the proposed techniques for the single cell case, they are experimentallyvalidated on commercial Turnigy LCO cells of 160 mAh at four different constant temperatures (10, 20, 30 and 40 °C). In the second part of this thesis, the proposed charging strategies are extended to take into account the balance of a serially-connected string of cells. To equalize possible mismatches, a centralized policy based on a shunting grid (active balance) connects or disconnects the cells during the charge. After a preliminary analysis, a simple mixed-integer algorithm was proposed. Since this method is computationally inefficient due to the high number of scenarios to be evaluated, this thesis proposes a ratio-based algorithm based on a Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) approach. This approach can be used within both MPC and RG schemes. The numerical validations of the proposed algorithms for the case of a string of four battery cells are carried out using a simulator based on a full-order electrochemical model. Numerical validations show that the PWM-like approach charges in parallel all the cells within the pack, whereas the mixed-integer approach charges the battery cells sequentially from the battery cell with the lowest state of charge to the ones with the highest states of charge. On the basis of the simulations, an algorithm based on a mixed logic that allows to charge in a “sequential parallel” approach is proposed. Some conclusions and future directions of research are proposed at the end of the thesis.

Analogue Circuit for Detection of Ageing Phenomena in Electric Drives / Analog krets för detektering av åldringsfenomen i elektriska drivsystem

Lin, Yudong January 2023 (has links)
This master thesis presents an analogue peak holder circuit design aimed at facilitating the non-invasive inspection of the ageing process in electric drives. The ageing process of electric drives is a crucial aspect that demands accurate monitoring to ensure their long-term performance and reliability. The proposed peak holder circuit is specifically designed to detect fast and narrow-width pulses of ringing current present in the PWM drive current. By capturing and measuring the peak values of these pulses, the circuit provides valuable insights into the ageing characteristics of electric drives. Experimental results demonstrate the remarkable efficiency of the peak holder circuit in accurately detecting and quantifying the peak values of the ringing current pulses. The circuit exhibits a stable output swing within a specified effective input swing range, with low mean-squared error (MSE) values. This signifies a strong linear correlation between the input and output signals, enhancing the reliability of the ageing detection process. The ability of the peak holder circuit to effectively detect and analyze the ageing process of electric drives offers numerous advantages. By focusing on peak detection, which captures the highest values of the ringing current, the circuit provides a more efficient and targeted approach to inspecting the ageing process. This enables engineers and maintenance personnel to gain crucial insights into the degradation and performance of electric drives, allowing for timely interventions and proactive maintenance.

Digital Pulse Width Modulator Techniques For Dc - Dc Converters

Batarseh, Majd 01 January 2010 (has links)
Recent research activities focused on improving the steady-state as well as the dynamic behavior of DC-DC converters for proper system performance, by proposing different design methods and control approaches with growing tendency to using digital implementation over analog practices. Because of the rapid advancement in semiconductors and microprocessor industry, digital control grew in popularity among PWM converters and is taking over analog techniques due to availability of fast speed microprocessors, flexibility and immunity to noise and environmental variations. Furthermore, increased interest in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) makes it a convenient design platform for digitally controlled converters. The objective of this research is to propose new digital control schemes, aiming to improve the steady-state and transient responses of a high switching frequency FPGA-based digitally controlled DC-DC converters. The target is to achieve enhanced performance in terms of tight regulation with minimum power consumption and high efficiency at steady-state, as well as shorter settling time with optimal over- and undershoots during transients. The main task is to develop new and innovative digital PWM techniques in order to achieve: 1. Tight regulation at steady-state: by proposing high resolution DPWM architecture, based on Digital Clock Management (DCM) resources available on FPGA boards. The proposed architecture Window-Masked Segmented Digital Clock Manager-FPGA based Digital Pulse Width Modulator Technique, is designed to achieve high resolution operating at high switching frequencies with minimum power consumption. 2. Enhanced dynamic response: by applying a shift to the basic saw-tooth DPWM signal, in order to benefit from the best linearity and simplest architecture offered by the conventional counter-comparator DPWM. This proposed control scheme will help the compensator reach the steady-state value faster. Dynamically Shifted Ramp Digital Control Technique for Improved Transient Response in DC-DC Converters, is projected to enhance the transient response by dynamically controlling the ramp signal of the DPWM unit.

Implementation of Nodes in HVDC Grids

Olsson, Johanna January 2020 (has links)
This project is made for a deeper understanding ofhow frequency and amplitude of the waves that create the controlwave in a Pulse Width Modulated 2-level inverter affect the powerquality and power losses. The results were that a high frequencyreduces the Total Harmonic Distortion but increases the powerloss. The amplitude, however, reduces both the Total HarmonicDistortion and the power loss as it increases. All the analyseswere done in a simulation program called Simulink. The resultscan be applied when improving High Voltage Direct Currentinverters to develop a functional High Voltage Direct Currentgrid that enables wider use of renewable energy sources. / Kandidatexjobb i elektroteknik 2020, KTH, Stockholm

Automatiserad gatubelysning baserad på omgivningens ljusstyrka : Hur ljussensorteknik kan minska energianvändningen för utomhusbelysning / Automated street lighting based on the ambient lighting of the surroundings : How light sensor technology could reduce the energy usage for outdoor lighting

McCarthy, Tom January 2021 (has links)
The goal of this thesis was to investigate how individual streetlights could be equipped with light sensor technology to apply an automatic dimmer function with the purpose of reducing energy usage. Studies show that road and streetlights in Sweden accounted for 626 GWh during the year 2016 and that a large portion of the lights still consists of energy demanding high pressure sodium lamps. Reports also show that energy efficient LED is becoming more and more common as an alternative to high pressure lamps. The goal was to develop a prototype for LED lighting with the function to control the LED’s to be off when the surrounding light levels are high and to dynamically increase the output power when the surroundings light level go down. Each light sensor reads an analog value which is interpreted by a micro controller that sends a pulse width modulated signal to control the LED power output. The finished prototype worked satisfactory and according to the set goals of the thesis. Generally, the thesis showed that extensive research is needed before the prototype could be implemented in real life. The prototype also needs to be tested and calibrated in an outdoor environment with day light.

Khlaief, Amor 10 July 2012 (has links)
This research focuses on the sensorless vector control of a salient pole permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), particularly at low speed, with detection of the initial rotor position. In first step, an overview of the state of the art concerning the estimation of the rotor speed as well as the initial rotor position of PMSM is addressed. From such a study, we have adopted an interesting strategy based on the model reference adaptive system (MRAS). The second step in this research consists in studying the performances and the feasibility of a non-linear observer for closed-loop vector control of salient pole PMSM. The MRAS technique as well as the non-linear observer is associated to a vector control scheme based on the field oriented strategy with space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). To detect the initial rotor position, we have proposed a new approach which estimates the position with a resolution of ±5° mechanical degrees. This new approach is based on applying short voltage pulses to the stator winding of salient pole PMSM. Several simulation and experimental results are presented to confirm the theoretical studies of the sensorless vector control of the salient pole PMSM drive. Finally, we have analyzed the performances of the sensorless speed fault tolerant control (FTC) of salient pole PMSM under failures related to the voltage source inverter (open circuit fault). The experimental results obtained based on the proposed techniques using nonlinear and MRAS observers have been improved in term of the reliability and allow a continuous operation of the salient pole PMSM drive even when it is supplied with two inverter legs.

Investigations On Dodecagonal Space Vector Generation For Induction Motor Drives

Das, Anandarup 10 1900 (has links)
Multilevel converters are finding increased attention in industry and academia as the preferred choice of electronic power conversion for high power applications. They have a wide application area in a variety of industries involving transportation and energy management, a significant portion of which comprises of multilevel inverter fed induction motor drives. Multilevel inverters are ideally suitable for high power drives, since the switching frequency of the devices is limited for high power applications. In low power drives, the switching frequency is often in the range of tens of kHz, so that switching frequency harmonics are pushed higher in the frequency spectrum thereby the size and cost of the filter are reduced. But higher switching frequency has its own drawbacks, in particular for high voltage, high power applications. They cause large dv/dt stress on the motor and the devices, increased EMI problems and higher switching losses. An engineering trade-o is thus needed to select the minimum switching frequency without compromising on the output voltage quality. The present work is an alternate approach in this direction. Here, new inverter topologies and PWM strategies are developed that can eliminate a set of harmonics in the phase voltage using 12-sided polygonal space vector diagrams, also called dodecagonal space vector diagrams. A dodecagonal space vector diagram has many advantages over a hexagonal one. Switching space vectors on a dodecagon will not produce any harmonics of the order 6n 1, (n=odd) in the phase voltage. The next set of harmonics thus reside at 12n 1, (n=integer). By increasing the number of samples in a sector, it is also possible to suppress the lower order harmonics and a nearly sinusoidal voltage can be obtained. This is possible to achieve at a low switching frequency of the inverters. At the same time, a dodecagon is closer to a circle than a hexagon; so the linear modulation range is extended by about 6.6% compared to the hexagonal case. For a 50 Hz rated frequency operation, under constant V/f ratio, the linear modulation can be achieved upto a frequency of 48.3 Hz. Also, the harmonics of the order 6n 1, (n=odd) are absent in the over-modulation region. Maximum fundamental voltage is obtained from this inverter at the end of over-modulation region, where the phase voltage becomes a 12-step waveform. The present work is developed on dodecagonal space vector diagrams. The entire work can be summarized and explained through Fig. 1. This figure shows the development of hexagonal and dodecagonal space vector diagrams. It is known that, 3-level and 5-level space vector diagrams have been developed as an improvement over 2-level ones. They Figure 1: Development of hexagonal and dodecagonal space vector diagrams have better harmonic performance, reduced dv/dt stress on the motor and devices, better electromagnetic compatibility and improvement of efficiency over 2-level space vector diagrams. This happens because the instantaneous error between the reference vector and the switching vectors reduces, as the space vector density increases in the diagram. This is shown at the top of the figure. In the bottom part, the development of the dodecagonal space vector diagram is shown, which is the contribution of this thesis work. This is explained in brief in the following lines. Initially, a space vector diagram is proposed which switches on hexagonal space vectors in lower-modulation region and dodecagonal space vectors in the higher modulation region. As the reference vector length increases, voltage vectors at the vertices of the outer dodecagon and the vertices from the outer most hexagon is used for PWM control. This results in highly suppressed 5th and 7th order harmonics thereby improving the harmonic profile of the motor current. This leads to the 12-step operation at rated voltage where all the 5th and 7th order harmonics are completely eliminated. At the same time, the linear range of modulation extends upto 96.6% of base speed. Because of this, and the high degree of suppression of lower order harmonics, smooth acceleration of the motor upto rated speed is possible. The presence of multilevel space vector structure also limits the switching frequency of the inverters. In the next work, the single dodecagonal space vector diagram is improved upon to form two concentric dodecagons spanning the space vector plane (Fig. 1). The radius of the outer dodecagon is double the inner one. It reduces the device rating and the dv/dt stress on the devices to half compared to existing 12-sided schemes. The entire space vector diagram is divided into smaller sized isosceles triangles. PWM switching on these smaller triangles reduces the inverter switching frequency without compromising on the output voltage quality. The space vector diagram is further refined to accommodate six concentric dodecagons in the space vector plane (Fig. 1). Here the space vector diagram is characterized by alternately placed dodecagons which become closer to each other at higher radii. As such the harmonics in the phase voltage are reduced, in particular at higher modulation indices. At the same time, because of the dodecagonal space vector structure, all the 6n ± 1, (n=odd) harmonics are eliminated from the phase voltage. A nearly sinusoidal phase voltage can be generated without resorting to high frequency switching of the inverters. The above space vector diagrams are developed using different inverter circuits. The first work is developed from cascaded combination of three 2-level inverters, while the second and third works use 3-level NPC inverters feeding an open end induction motor drive. The circuit topologies are explained in detail in the respective chapters. Apart from this, PWM switching schemes and detailed analysis on duty cycle calculations using the concept of volt-second balance are also presented. They show that with proper switching schemes, the proposed configurations can substantially reduce the overall loss of the inverter. Other operational issues like capacitor voltage balancing of 3-level NPC inverters and improvement of input current drawn from the grid are also covered. All the above propositions are first simulated by MATLAB and subsequently verified by an experimental laboratory prototype. Motor current waveforms both at steady state and transient conditions during motor acceleration show that the induction motor can be fed from nearly sinusoidal voltage at all operating conditions. Simplified comparative studies are also made with the proposed converters and higher level inverters in terms of output voltage quality and losses. These are some of the constituents for chapters 2, 3 and 4 in this thesis. Additionally, the first chapter also covers a brief survey on some of the recent progresses made in the field of multilevel inverter. The thesis concludes with some interesting ideas for further thought and exploration.

Digital control strategies for DC/DC SEPIC converters towards integration

Li, Nan 29 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The use of SMPS (Switched mode power supply) in embedded systems is continuously increasing. The technological requirements of these systems include simultaneously a very good voltage regulation and a strong compactness of components. SEPIC ( Single-Ended Primary Inductor Converter) is a DC/DC switching converter which possesses several advantages with regard to the other classical converters. Due to the difficulty in control of its 4th-order and non linear property, it is still not well-exploited. The objective of this work is the development of successful strategies of control for a SEPIC converter on one hand and on the other hand the effective implementation of the control algorithm developed for embedded applications (FPGA, ASIC) where the constraints of Silicon surface and the loss reduction factor are important. To do it, two non linear controls and two observers of states and load have been studied: a control and an observer based on the principle of sliding mode, a deadbeat predictive control and an Extended Kalman observer. The implementation of both control laws and the Extended Kalman observer are implemented in FPGA. An 11-bit digital PWM has been developed by combining a 4-bit Δ-Σ modulation, a 4-bit segmented DCM (Digital Clock Management) phase-shift and a 3-bit counter-comparator. All the proposed approaches are experimentally validated and constitute a good base for the integration of embedded switching mode converters

This work was conducted in the laboratory of Electromechanical Energy Conversion, at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in the University of Patras, Greece. The main purpose of this project was the study and construction of a three Phase Voltage Source Inverter for the control of the performance of a Synchronous Reluctance Motor by the implementation of Scalar and Vector control. In this thesis, a scalar V/f control scheme was applied, both open and closed loop, for the control of the rotational speed of the rotor. As far as the Synchronous Reluctance Motor is concerned, in the latest years a great interest has emerged around this motor, which mainly focuses in the optimization of its construction and control. The main feature of this motor is that the rotor does not have any field winding. By this way, the output torque is produced only by the so called reluctance torque. In this work, an introduction on the AC motor is done, while the main interest is focused on the already mentioned motors. The analysis of this motor covers many aspects, such as the construction characteristics, the mathematical model of the motor, as well as a comparison with other popular motors. Moreover, the three Phase Inverter is studied, since it is used for the control of the motor. Also, there is an extended reference on the Pulse Width Modulation technique, which is used for the control of power devices. In the next chapters, the simulation of this motor is presented, since it is necessary fot the understanding of its dynamic behavior. In the following, an analysis on the design and construction of the required printed circuit boards is done, while the microcontroller which was used is presented in a more detailed way. The flowacharts of the open and closed loop control methods of the rotational speed are also given. Finally, the experimental results for both cases are presented and analysed.
