Investigation On Dodecagonal Multilevel Voltage Space Vector Structures By Cascading Flying Capacitor And Floating H-Bridge Cells For Medium Voltage IM Drives

Mathew, Jaison 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
In high-power electric drives, multilevel inverters are generally deployed to address issues such as electromagnetic interference, switch voltage stress and harmonic distortion. The switching frequency of the inverter is always kept low, of the order of 1KHz or even less to reduce switching losses and synchronous pulse width modulation (PWM) is used to avoid the problem of sub-harmonics and beat frequencies. This is particularly important if the switching frequency is very low. The synchronous PWM is getting popularity as its realization is very easy with digital controllers compared to analog controllers. Neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters, cascaded H-bridge, and flying-capacitor multilevel inverters are some of the popular schemes used for high-power applications. Hybrids of these multilevel inverters have also been proposed recently to take advantage of the basic configurations. Multilevel inverters can also be realized by feeding the induction motor from both ends (open-end winding) using conventional inverter structures. For controlling the output voltage of these inverters, various PWM techniques are used. Chapter-1 of this thesis provides an over view of the various multilevel inverter schemes preceded by a discussion on basic two-level VSI topology. The inverters used in motor drive applications have to be operated in over-modulation range in order to extract the maximum fundamental output voltage that is possible from the dc-link. Operation in this high modulation range is required to meet temporary overloads or to have maximum power operation in the high speed range (flux weakened region). This, however, introduces a substantial amount of low order harmonics in the Motor phase voltages. Due to these low-order harmonic frequencies, the dynamic performance of the drive is lost and the current control schemes are severely affected especially due to 5th and 7th harmonic components. Further, due to these low-order harmonics and non-linear PWM operation in over-modulation region, frequent over-current fault conditions occur and reliability of the drive is jeopardized. The twelve sided-polygonal space vector diagram (dodecagonal space vectors) can be used to overcome the problem of low order 5th and 7th harmonics and to give more range for linear modulation while keeping the switching frequency at a minimum compared to conventional hexagonal space vector based inverters. Thus, the dodecagonal space-vector switching can be viewed as an engineering compromise between low switching frequency and quality load current waveform. Most of the previous works of dodecagonal space-vector generation schemes are based on NPC inverters. However, sophisticated charge control schemes are required in NPC inverters to deal with the neutral-point voltage fluctuation and the neutral-point voltage shifting issues. The losses in the clamping diodes are another major concern. In the second chapter, a multilevel dodecagonal space-vector generation scheme based on flying capacitor topology, utilizing an open end winding induction motor is presented. The neutral point charge-balancing problem reported in the previous works is not present in this scheme, the clamping diodes are eliminated and the number of power supplies required has been reduced. The capacitors have inherent charge balancing capability, and the charge control is done once in every switching cycle, which gives tight voltage control for the capacitors. For the speed control of induction motors, the space-vector PWM scheme is more advantageous than the sine-triangle PWM as it gives a more linear range of operation and improved harmonic performance. One major disadvantage with the conventional space-vector PWM is that the trigonometric operations demand formidable computational efforts and look-up tables. Carrier based, common-mode injected PWM schemes have been proposed to simplify the PWM process. However, the freedom of selecting the PWM switching sequences is limited here. Another way of obtaining SVPWM is using the reference voltage samples and the nearest vector information to switch appropriate devices for proper time intervals, realizing the reference vector in an average sense. In-formation regarding the sector and nearest vectors can be easily obtained by comparing the instantaneous amplitudes of the reference voltages. This PWM approach is pro-posed for the speed control of the motor in this thesis. The trigonometric operations and the requirement of large look-up tables in the conventional SVPWM are avoided in this method. It has the additional advantage that the switching sequences can be decided at will, which is helpful in reducing further, the harmonic distortion in certain frequency ranges. In this way, this method tries to combine the advantages of vector based methods (conventional SVPWM) and scalar methods (carrier-based methods). The open-end winding schemes allowed the required phase voltage levels to be generated quite easily by feeding from both ends of the windings. Thus, most of the multilevel inverters based on dodecagonal space-vector structures relied on induction motors with open-end windings. The main disadvantage of open-end winding induction motor is that six wires are to be run from the inverter to the motor, which may be unacceptable in certain applications. Apart from the inconvenience of laying six wires, the voltage reflections in the wires can lead to over voltages at the motor terminals, causing insulation failures. Where as the topology presented in chapter-2 of this thesis uses open-end winding motor with flying-capacitor inverters for the generation of dodecagonal space-vectors, the topology presented in chapter-3 utilizes a cascade connection of flying-capacitors and floating H-bridge cells to generate the same set of voltage space-vectors, thus allowing any standard induction motor as the load. Of the methods used for the speed control of induction motors, namely sine-triangle PWM and space vector PWM, the latter that provides extra modulation range is naturally preferred. It is a well-understood fact that the way in which the PWM switching sequences are applied has a significant influence on the harmonic performance of the drive. However, this topic has not been addressed properly for dodecagonal voltage space-vector based multilevel inverter drives. In chapter-4 of the thesis, this aspect is taken into ac-count and the notion of “harmonic flux trajectories” and “stator flux ripple” are used to analyze the harmonic performance of the various PWM switching schemes. Although the PWM method used in this study is similar to that in chapter-2, the modification in the PWM switching sequence in the PWM algorithm yields significant improvements in harmonic performance. The proposed topologies and PWM schemes are extensively simulated and experimentally verified. The control scheme was implemented using a DSP processor running at a clock frequency 150MHz and a four-pole, 3.7kW, 50Hz, 415V three-phase induction motor was used as the load. Since the PWM ports are limited in a DSP, a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) was used to decode the PWM signals from the DSP to generate timing information required for PWM sequencing for all the power devices. The same FPGA was used to generate the dead-time signals for the power devices also.

Khan, Hamid 06 November 2012 (has links)
(...) / The dissertation documents research work carried out on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategies for hard switched Voltage Source Inverters (VSI) for variable speed electric drives. This research is aimed at Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). PWM is at the heart of all variable speed electric drives; they have a huge influence on the overall performance of the system and may also help eventually give us an extra degree of freedom in the possibility to rethink the inverter design including the re-dimensioning of the inverter components.HEVs tend to cost more than conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as they have to incorporate two traction systems, which is the major discouraging factor for consumers and in turn for manufacturers. The two traction system increases the maintenance cost of the car as well. In addition the electric drives not only cost extra money but space too, which is already scarce with an ICE under the hood. An all-electric car is not yet a viable idea as the batteries have very low energy density compared with petrol or diesel and take considerable time to charge. One solution could be to use bigger battery packs but these add substantially to the price and weight of the vehicle and are not economically viable. To avoid raising the cost of such vehicles to unreasonably high amounts, autonomy has to be compromised. However hybrid vehicles are an important step forward in the transition toward all-electric cars while research on better batteries evolves. The objective of this research is to make electric drives suitable for HEVs i.e. lighter, more compact and more efficient -- requiring less maintenance and eventually at lower cost so that the advantages, such as low emissions and better fuel efficiency, would out-weigh a little extra cost for these cars. The electrical energy source in a vehicle is a battery, a DC Voltage source, and the traction motor is generally an AC motor owing to the various advantages it offers over a DC motor. Hence the need for a VSI, which is used to transform the DC voltage into AC voltage of desired amplitude and frequency. Pulse width modulation techniques are used to control VSI to ensure that the required/calculated voltage is fed to the machine, to produce the desired torque/speed. PWM techniques are essentially open loop systems where no feedback is used and the instantaneous values differ from the required voltage, however the same average values are obtained. Pulse width modulated techniques produce a low frequency signal (desired average value of the switched voltage) also called the fundamental component, along with unwanted high frequency harmonics linked to the carrier signal frequency or the PWM period. In modern cars we see more and more mechanical loads driven by electricity through digital processors. It is very important to eliminate the risk of electromagnetic interference between these systems to avoid failure or malfunction. Hence these unwanted harmonics have to be filtered so that they do not affect the electronic control unit or other susceptible components placed in the vicinity. Randomised modulation techniques (RPWM) are used to dither these harmonics at the switching frequency and its multiple. In this thesis a random modulator based on space vector modulation is presented which has additional advantages of SVM. Another EMI problem linked to PWM techniques is that they produce common mode voltages in the load. For electric machines, common mode voltage produces shaft voltage which in turn provokes dielectric stress on the motor bearings, its lubricant and hence the possibility of generating bearing currents in the machine that can be fatal for the machine. To reduce the common mode voltage a space vector modulation strategy is developed based on intelligent placement of zero vectors. (...)

Optimization of control and degraded mode operation

Kolli, Abdelfatah 11 December 2013 (has links)
This Ph.D. thesis focuses on a novel combination of a frequency converter and an electric machine specially dedicated to traction drive and battery recharging modes of an electric vehicle (EV). This power architecture is composed of a six legs voltage inverter connected to a three-phase open-end winding machine. Chapter II details a quantitative comparison between two industrial power architectures and concludes that the SOFRACI powertrain is a competitive solution in terms of power converter efficiency, drive mechanical performances, and required silicon area. This architecture offers the attractive possibility of combining three important functions: traction and braking, battery charging and connecting the energy storage to a smart grid. In addition, this topology offers several advantages such as various motor feeding possibilities and a high degree of reconfiguration in degraded operating mode. The third and fourth chapters of this thesis concern the optimization of control strategies with regard to two types of faults: firstly the inherent imperfections in the converter itself (non modeled non-linearity and ineffective synchronization of control values) and secondly accidental failures. In the first case, an analysis of the pulse width modulation (PWM) methods enables the creation of a PWM strategy with a very low sensitivity to PWM uncertainties and the non-linear behavior of the power converter. In the second case, in the event of a faulty semiconductor device, it is shown that a hardware reconfiguration is required to enable an emergency traction mode. The sustainability of the traction mode is then examined with respect to the control strategy. This analysis leads to an innovative control structure based on basic and easy to implement solutions. Finally, the degraded mode operation principles have been extended to normal mode operation for the purpose of enhancing the cycle efficiency.

Control and Analysis of Pulse-Modulated Systems

Almér, Stefan January 2008 (has links)
The thesis consists of an introduction and four appended papers. In the introduction we give an overview of pulse-modulated systems and provide a few examples of such systems. Furthermore, we introduce the so-called dynamic phasor model which is used as a basis for analysis in two of the appended papers. We also introduce the harmonic transfer function and finally we provide a summary of the appended papers. The first paper considers stability analysis of a class of pulse-width modulated systems based on a discrete time model. The systems considered typically have periodic solutions. Stability of a periodic solution is equivalent to stability of a fixed point of a discrete time model of the system dynamics. Conditions for global and local exponential stability of the discrete time model are derived using quadratic and piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions. A griding procedure is used to develop a systematic method to search for the Lyapunov functions. The second paper considers the dynamic phasor model as a tool for stability analysis of a general class of pulse-modulated systems. The analysis covers both linear time periodic systems and systems where the pulse modulation is controlled by feedback. The dynamic phasor model provides an $\textbf{L}_2$-equivalent description of the system dynamics in terms of an infinite dimensional dynamic system. The infinite dimensional phasor system is approximated via a skew truncation. The truncated system is used to derive a systematic method to compute time periodic quadratic Lyapunov functions. The third paper considers the dynamic phasor model as a tool for harmonic analysis of a class of pulse-width modulated systems. The analysis covers both linear time periodic systems and non-periodic systems where the switching is controlled by feedback. As in the second paper of the thesis, we represent the switching system using the L_2-equivalent infinite dimensional system provided by the phasor model. It is shown that there is a connection between the dynamic phasor model and the harmonic transfer function of a linear time periodic system and this connection is used to extend the notion of harmonic transfer function to describe periodic solutions of non-periodic systems. The infinite dimensional phasor system is approximated via a square truncation. We assume that the response of the truncated system to a periodic disturbance is also periodic and we consider the corresponding harmonic balance equations. An approximate solution of these equations is stated in terms of a harmonic transfer function which is analogous to the harmonic transfer function of a linear time periodic system. The aforementioned assumption is proved to hold for small disturbances by proving the existence of a solution to a fixed point equation. The proof implies that for small disturbances, the approximation is good. Finally, the fourth paper considers control synthesis for switched mode DC-DC converters. The synthesis is based on a sampled data model of the system dynamics. The sampled data model gives an exact description of the converter state at the switching instances, but also includes a lifted signal which represents the inter-sampling behavior. Within the sampled data framework we consider H-infinity control design to achieve robustness to disturbances and load variations. The suggested controller is applied to two benchmark examples; a step-down and a step-up converter. Performance is verified in both simulations and in experiments. / QC 20100628

Alepuz Menéndez, Salvador Simón 13 December 2004 (has links)
This dissertation study, propose and carry out the main contributions in the field of three-level inverter control, using the topology Neutral-Point-Clamped, although results can be extended to other topologies and/or number of levels. A procedure for modelling is presented, based on line-switching functions, moving average operator and D-Q transformation. Then, the obtained models in D-Q frame contain complete information about system dynamics. Switching strategy is simple and can be considered as an extension of two-level sinusoidal PWM to three level. The system variables are not controlled by the switching strategy. In this work, all the system variables are controlled by the regulator, including DC-link balance. This control approach is different than the conventional one, where DC-link balance is achieved by means of a proper selection of redundant states in the switching strategy, and the other variables are controlled by the regulator. The regulator is based on the multivariable linear control technique LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator), in combination with the non-linear adaptive control technique Gain Scheduling. Moreover, a methodology for the calculation of the controller is presented. This controller is versatile, open and adaptable. However, the controller can be built depending on the concrete specifications of each application. The controller is calculated by means of simulation using MatLab-Simulink. The mathematical models based on the switching functions of the converter give the best trade-off between simulation speed and precision. In order to validate the proposed controller, an experimental prototype has been designed and implemented. Experimental results show that the controller is useful and effective for the regulation of different loads and applications, even with non-linear loads, different operation points and variables to control, in steady-state and transitory operation. Dynamic response speed and quality are similar to other control systems in the literature. The DC-link balance control achieved is specially interesting. Furthermore, steady-state error is cancelled due to the robustness of the controller, even though significant deviation of different system parameters are present. The use of Gain-Scheduling in combination with LQR is effective, allowing the calculation of regulators with different control strategies. Good agreement between simulations and experimental results has been found. This result validates simulation models and the design method for the controller, based on simulations.

Βαβάτσικος, Παναγιώτης 07 June 2013 (has links)
The thesis that follows, describes the procedure which we followed in order to be able to supply a RL load with the power produced by a fuel cell. The load’s voltage should have constant value and frequency. The experimental configuration which was constructed to help us fulfill our goal further from the fuel cell and the RL load, includes a dc dc boost converter, a voltage source inverter, a 3phase transformer, a LC filter, a device that electronically chooses the value of the load and finally the digital card which executes all the necessary controls. When we talk about controls, we refer firstly to the production of SPWM pulses which are used in order to control the voltage source inverter and to the production of PWM pulses which are needed by the dc dc boost converter. These pulses are produced with the aid of a model developed with Labview. In addition, with the use of our digital card and the model which we developed, we are capable of applying the fuzzy logic to our experimental configuration in order to stabilize the load’s voltage. To be certain that we have ensured the smooth supply of the RL load with the power produced by the fuel cell and a voltage signal of constant value and frequency and low harmonic content, we made step changes to the load’s value and alterations to the fuel cell’s output, in order to assure that the fuzzy logic takes charge of the duty to restore the desired voltage signal to the load. The thesis is organized in the following way: In chapter 1 we make a brief description of the renewable energy sources which dominate Greece (solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass energy) and we present extensively the applications of fuel cells. In chapter 2 we describe on a great scale all the devices which consist the power circuit of the experimental configuration . So, the power circuit consists of the fuel cell, which is our energy source, the dc dc boost converter and the voltage source inverter. Furthermore, we have a LC filter in order to limit the total harmonic distortion and a 3 phase transformer which increase the voltage to the desired level. Finally, we have a 3 phase load which is the terminal device of the experimental configuration. In chapter 3 we compare the available digital methods for performing the desired controls and afterwards we present them theoretically. The available digital methods, in order to accomplish the controls, are the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and the digital cards constructed by National Instruments (is our final choice). The required controls that must be performed include, as we have already mentioned, the SPWM and PWM pulses and of course the fuzzy control. In chapter 4 we present extensively all the devices of our experimental configuration with a special reference to all the devices which were constructed in our lab (like the dc dc boost converter). We make also special reference to some practical problems that we encountered when we used the previous devices (par example with the 3 phase transformer). In chapter 5 we present the procedure in order to develop the Labview model which contains all the necessary controls. Thus, we make a detailed presentation of all the tools and the settings which allowed to us to fulfill our goal. In chapter 6 we present all the experimental results and the conclusions we drew. More specifically, we present graphs and measurements for every part of the experimental configuration and we give special attention in order to give prominence to the fuzzy controller’s impact. Finally, some possible extensions of this thesis are underlined.

Βεργίνη, Ελένη 07 June 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is the implementation of the mechanical torque that appears on the rotor of a real wind turbine, using the method of rapid prototyping. That method has many advantages. The main advantage is that the use of a real wind turbine was avoided and that minimized the cost of research. A second advantage is that it was not necessary to wait for convenient weather conditions in order to carry out the experiments. In addition, damages of equipment were avoided using the method of rapid prototyping In order to accomplice this objective it is necessary to have an experimental construction, which will be used for tests and measurements, as well as the use of wind speed data and the characteristics of a real wind turbine, which will be used to calculate in scale the real torque that appears on the rotor. The experimental construction is shown in Pic.2. The torque on the rotor of the real wind turbine was calculated as a function of wind speed. That torque was implemented in scale using torque control of an induction motor in the laboratory. The experimental construction includes an induction machine, a constant current machine, a single-phase resistive load, a three-phase voltage source inverter and a digital signal processor, which is used to accomplice the control procedure. The torque control of the induction machine is achieved by regulating the amplitude and the frequency of the output voltage of the inverter, using the appropriate pulses to drive the IGBTs. The microprocessor produces the pulses using the method of Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM). The parameters of the pulses are proportional to the torque error and are appropriately calculated using the method of Fuzzy Control. A torque meter was used in order to measure the torque on the shaft of the induction motor, which was the feedback signal for the control procedure. The code generation is achieved using a microprocessor (DSP). Initially, a simulation model is made using the program Simulink and then, using the right tools, the code is generated and run using the microprocessor. Using the microprocessor had many advantages and made the experiment procedure easier. Initially, additional control devices were not necessary during the experiments. Also, the microprocessor peripherals were useful during the sampling of feedback signals, during the calculation of SPWM pulses and during data recording.
