Women's Perceptions of Flourishing Through Quilting as a Leisure Activity

Ferrarese, Cathy Lynn 01 January 2018 (has links)
Quilting is a self-chosen leisure activity for millions of women in the United States. Previous research on quilting suggested that quilting is influenced by the emotional state of the quilter. However, the emotional experiences generated during quilting have not been fully explored. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to explore quilters' perceptions of what quilting as a leisure activity does to enhance their well-being and increase flourishing. Positive psychology well-being theory was the theoretical foundation for the study. Semistructured interviews with 12 adult women who quilt as a leisure activity were the basis of the narrative inquiry. Data were recorded through in-person and telephone interviews that were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to develop overarching themes. Findings revealed that quilting contributed to participants' well-being and built flourishing through three primary avenues: creativity, relationships, and positive emotion. Quilting provided an opportunity for creative expression and growth as artists. Quilt-making activity was centered around relationships with other quilters and with the larger community, and quilting was linked with positive emotion as participants experienced great joy in their quilting activities. This study has implications for increasing well-being and building flourishing in women through the adoption of quilting as a leisure activity.

Between Friends.

Howser, Greg Warren 07 May 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This paper correlates with a Master of Fine Arts graduate thesis exhibition held at Slocumb Galleries in Ball Hall at East Tennessee State University March 21 through 25, 2011. The exhibition contains a mixed media body of work including prints, metal point drawings, and quilts. These works are an exploration showing the artist's voyeuristic studies through line, texture, form, pigment, and wax. This thesis goes into detail about how the artist came to create this group of art by discussing tools, printmaking processes, encaustic, metal point, and his influences.

Fägerhag, Johanna, Magnusson, Lisa January 2018 (has links)
Air pollution has a negative impact on both the environment and the human health. Pure Air Zone is a silent and energy efficient air purifier which has been integrated in a bed frame. This creates a clean airspace where the user will place its head while sleeping. Currently a mesh material is being used to cover the bed frame but this is not well suited for a bedroom environment when looking at the appearance of the textile. The main focus has therefore been to develop an alternative textile that can replace the current mesh without impairing the function. The most important characteristics the textile has to possess are high air permeability, high dimension stability and high abrasion resistance. Tests were carried out by using a Martindale machine, a tensile tester and a permeability tester to measure these characteristics. Seven woven fabrics from Ludvig Svensson were examined for said characteristics and compared to the mesh which acted as a reference material. Majority of the chosen weaves were thinly or sparsely woven and had to be stabilized by quilting them together with filter wadding. After completed tests the characteristics were weighed against each other to present a combined result for all the weaves. In the combined results it was clear that the current mesh material being used for the bed frame got the overall lowest result. For air permeability, the highest weighed characteristic, all but one weave got a better result than the reference material. The weave that got the best combined result was a thin plain weave that will be referred to as Day in this report.

Teaching the Arts through the Appalachian Culture: a Proposal for a High-School Class.

Pitts, Valerie Renee 01 May 2001 (has links) (PDF)
Because of a demonstrable need, there should be a course for the study of Appalachian art in the high school curriculum. This study is a proposal for the study of traditional Appalachian art and its importance to the promotion and preservation of the arts and crafts in the Appalachian region. This course consists of background information on selected traditional Appalachian art, contact and interaction with local artists and craftspeople, and student hands-on experience in the art forms considered. Detailed unit and lesson plans are included in the following areas: Spinning and Weaving, Dyeing, Basketry, Quilting, Pottery, Woodcarving, Blacksmithing, Vernacular Architecture, and Handmade Instruments of Country Music. This course has been taught by the writer at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee, and was enthusiastically received by both students and members of the community.

To embroider is a verb : Reflections from a needles eye

Skafvenstedt, Ellen January 2016 (has links)
