Building bridges and blurring lines: the value of reflexivity in CYC-based humanitarian practice

Vradenburg, Kim 04 March 2008 (has links)
This research suggests that Child and Youth Care based reflexive practice contributes to crucial shifts in perspective in both international and national staff in humanitarian contexts, and blurs the line between beneficiaries and practitioners in humanitarian intervention. I maintain that national staff (people hired in country by international organisations) to care for affected populations in humanitarian contexts are a distinct group within a vulnerable population, and with whom integrative, focused efforts in practitioner development must be made. Specifically, this research suggests that an emphasis on reflexive practice with this group in Malawi, Sierra Leone and Sudan facilitated small but crucial increments of human change processes which led to increased responsibility as part of developing practitioner identity and wider social change. All of this is important if effective practice towards targeted beneficiaries and humanitarian protection aims are to be fully realized.

The main purpose of this study was to register and to suggest ways of analysing verbalized inner speech. The research was based on Norbert Wiley’s semiotic self model. The instruments Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire and the Factorial Scale of Emotional Adjustment/ Neuroticism were answered by 39 college students. In a second moment, 23 of the participants were instructed to answer out loud the Raven's Progressive Matrices Test and a semi-structured interview on the inner speech experience. In the thirty-nine-participant sample, a moderate positive correlation was observed between rumination and neuroticism traits. In the second part, measures of time, number of verbalized words and performance in the Raven's Test were contrasted with ruminative and reflexive profiles. The results of a qualitative analysis suggested the distinction between the form (informational and communicational) and the content (self or task as objects of conversation) of verbalized inner speech. The comparison between quantitative and qualitative data illustrated graphically the oscillations of form and content in seven extreme cases which were studied. Data from the interview suggested that inner speech is perceived as a tool that either helps or hinders thoughts and feelings. The results refined the semiotic self model of Wiley, exemplifying the exclusive characteristics of inner speech in opposition to public speech; the results also showed that the (processual) semiotic self intentionally floats between the self and the task; but no correlation was observed between the ruminative and reflexive profiles and the problem solving performance.

Genz, Antonio Carlos de Madalena January 2005 (has links)
This study intends to analyze the representations and practices of a religious zen budist group, related to the Japanese zen master, Moriyama Roshi, in the so called community “Associação Via Zen”. As we intended to study the lodging and the reception of budism in Brazil through a group of practitioners without ethnic connections with the original countries of this religion, and their encounter with an original master of this tradition, we intended to show the negotiation processes through which its teaching is assimilated. By means of interviews and ethnographic data, we see that not always, or not necessarily, the assimilation of this teaching is done within the understanding framework of the category “religion”. As a category that comprises religion, many practitioners see themselves as following a spiritual path. This route reflects a modern tendency of the subjects to chose from a pattern distinguished by autonomy and reflexivity. This data, projected upon the issue of the formation of a budist identity in the Brazilian religious field, opens up to inquirying that budism, beyong religion, can also be resignified in terms of a spiritual path or a philosophy of life, among other terms.

Salvador

To this end, we investigate the main theoretical features for a semiotic transformation of the classic transcendental philosophy, especially the three-dimensional Peircean semiotics. Moreover, the objective is to demonstrate that a self-reflexive philosophy is able to justify scientific propositions as well as ethical and moral standards. The end of this research points to the relevance of the proposal of Apel when he faces the challenge imposed by the “historicization” of the thought, not through an “untranscendentalizing” posture towards reason but in the way of an eventual non-metaphysical foundation – beyond the social and historical contingencies, thereby reflecting what is specific of the philosophical reflection as the themes of the universal principles of our thinking and acting.

The 'wicked' problem of employability development in HE degree programmes : experiences, understandings and peceptions of lecturers and students

Cui, Fengqiao (Vanessa) January 2014 (has links)
For more than a decade, universities around the world have been placed with great responsibility to develop their students’ employability for political, economic and social reasons. Though many policies, research and practices have tried to address the issues and challenges employability development in HE faces, to date it remains a ‘wicked’ problem for higher education. Through a close up research framework, this study explored and examined the experiences, understandings and perceptions of lecturers, and students from two English Post 92 degree programmes, in an educational discipline, regarding employability and employability development. In order to illuminate some of the critical issues, in an attempt to understand ‘why employability development is so problematic to higher education’, this study took a reflexive phenomenological approach to look at how lecturers and students make sense of employability and employability development, through their own experiences. As well as looking at the two groups separately, it also compared their perceptions and understandings to highlight any dissonances they have, which are crucial to the complex and ‘wicked’ problem of employability development in their programmes. As lecturers and students hold diverse perspectives on employability in HE that is often in conflict, it was expected that there would be no “one size fits all” solution. In addition, this study found that employability has certainly added complexities to higher education. Certainly, it has led the students and lecturers to have complex issues within their roles and identities, in relation to employability development in their programmes and in HE in general. As such, this study reflexively examined those issues, and concludes that although employability development in HE will remain complex and ‘wicked’, through reflexive research and practices, vital issues relating to lecturers’ and students’ roles and responsibilities can be illuminated and solved.

Understanding the lives and labours of lone-mother students

Nawaz, Sajida January 2016 (has links)
This study has explored the experiences of lone mothers and their labours as lone- mother students in Higher Education and en route to accessing Higher Education. The main aim of the study was to investigate barriers and constraints in provision of support for lone mothers wishing to study in Higher Education. The importance of education for lone parents has been well documented (Fryer, 1997; Scottish Office,1998; Powney et al., 2000), and there has been a plethora of research undertaken on Higher Education. However, the connection between the lone mother and education has not received much attention; little is known about the support that is offered to lone mothers whilst accessing Higher Education. Research by the National Union of Students (NUS) (2009) has shown that in many ways the responsibilities of mothering and mothers have not been considered by educational institutions as many courses operate in a climate of assumption that most students are free from family obligations of providing care. Due to lack of empirical research undertaken in this area, this study adopted a qualitative ethnographic approach to investigate the lives of lone-mother students. Furthermore, the study was conducted by an international student from Pakistan who is a lone mother herself and whose experiences also form a part of this research. An ethnographic approach was adopted and developed, to enable a holistic understanding of the lone mothers’ experience in Higher Education and specifically in relation to their cultural background. Hence, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were opted for to collect data. The research revealed in-depth knowledge about the relationships that the lone mothers share with their children, extended family, friends and with studies. The data suggested the need for socio - economic support for lone mothers in Higher Education. The qualitative inquiry method used in this study allowed for an examination of the phenomenon of ‘lone motherhood’. The depth, range and longitudinal nature of the data allowed to see contradictions or contrasts in the data (e.g. extrinsic/intrinsic motivations), as well as changes and developments over time (anxiety/self-esteem). The iterative approach also enabled emerging theories and concepts to develop and to be tested over time (e.g. ‘modelling’, ‘utopian’ narratives). Thus, the ethnographic approach enriched the possibilities of ‘grounded’ theorising, and also improved the possibilities of extending previous studies. Thus it indicates that lone-mother students’experiences of education are complex and therefore it is argued that the study of lone- mother students should be extended to conduct further research into different aspects of lone mother students in Higher Education.

Teshome, Betelhem, Larsson, Robin January 2018 (has links)
“Killmiddag” is an initiative launched by the equality foundation Make Equal, with the purpose of engaging men in gender equality issues. Based on this, the intention of this study was to increase knowledge and understanding of how masculinity is created within the context of Killmiddag. Our aim was also to find the reasons why men choose to participate, as well as how they deal with possible conflict between the norms within, and outside of, the Killmiddag forum. The empirical material was collected through nine semi-structured interviews and was analyzed using the following theories; R.W Connell's theory of masculinities, Richard Jenkin's theory of social identity, Erving Goffman's theory of impression management and Anthony Giddens’s theory of reflexivity. The result shows that men’s motivation to participate in Killmiddag is sparked by a desire to change current masculinity norms, and that this is partly due to the MeToo movement. It also shows that Killmiddag plays an important part when it comes to the participants’ personal constructions of masculinity, this mainly as it is a context that allows them to express parts of their identity and show emotions that normally are not accepted within male forums. In addition, the result brings light to a split between different situational masculinity norms, which can cause conflict between an individual’s self-perception, masculinity standards and the need for others’ approval. In regards to this, three different strategies for managing these problems were found: to challenge and change the norms, adapt to the given situation or purposefully surround oneself with like-minded people.
