Documenting an Imperfect Past: Examining Tampa's Racial Integration through Community, Film, and Remembrance of Central Avenue

Bell, Travis R. 18 October 2017 (has links)
This research examines the Civil Rights Movement in Tampa, Florida through documentary film to recognize an imperfect past and visually reconstruct Central Avenue as a physical and Thirdspace site of remembrance located at an intersection of race and community. Motivated by an ethnographic approach and through community engagement, Tampa Technique: Rise, Demise, and Remembrance of Central Avenue is a 54-minute film that explores Central Avenue’s rise to prominence through segregation, its physical and symbolic demise as a racialized site of communal space, and how it is remembered through collective and public memory in the location it once occupied. Documentary film provides an engaging platform to present research in a thoughtful and provocative way to recover lost histories that can inform audiences about structural and systematic inequalities that remain in overt and covert ways. The purpose of this written document supplements the film and takes issues of privilege, reflexivity, and subjectivity into account to interrogate tensions of “self” and “other” encountered during the film’s production and to translate how a visual representation of Central Avenue developed and unfolded as a present form of community participation and intervention through remembrance. The entire documentary is not available online due to copyright restrictions. However, a three-minute documentary trailer is available on Vimeo.

IDENTIDADE TELEVISUAL: AUTOPROMOCIONALIDADE E AUTORREFERENCIALIDADE / IDENTIDADE TELEVISUAL: AUTOPROMOCIONALIDADE E AUTORREFERENCIALIDADE

Menezes, Darciele Paula Marques 12 December 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation proposes to examine the actions of self-promoting and self-referential character undertaken by the television companies inside their own schedule, in order to constitute yours identity and to promote yours image and trademark: in this somewhat circular gear, usually use its communication and discursive device for their own benefit. Thus, the research analyzes, in terms of a discursive semiotics, some of the procedures adopted by the television companies to constitute its identity, to project its image and trademark and to promote the quality of its products, in order to make public viewer loyal. This is a difficult task, especially in the case of affiliated stations that need to develop this promotional process in two directions, not always convergent: the head and its own network. To realize the objectives, the research has as its object of study two sitcoms, The New Program (RGT, 2004) and Off the Air (RBS TV, 2011), whose central theme is exactly the televisual production and television companies backstages.

Působení kognitivních stylů na rozhodování jedince / Effect of cognitive styles on individual's decision-making

Poláková, Lucia January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis was to study how cognitive styles influence decision-making. From structural point of view, the thesis is divided into two parts. In the introductory theoretical part we point at decision-making, its definition and theory, and then we deal with structure and factors which influence decision-making, as well as rules for decision-making and decision errors. In theoretical part we concentrate on cognitive styles. We define cognitive styles and present their possible classifications to a reader, at the same time we focus on few of them in detail. Thereafter we concentrate on relation between cognitive styles and decision-making. In conclusion of theoretical part we focus on adolescence, we describe specific of cognitive and emotional development, as well as adolescents' decision-making. The aim of empirical part was to find out whether decision errors occur in decision-making between older adolescents and to what extent, and how intervening variable influences them - cognitive style reflexivity-impulsivity, gender, and attended secondary school. Research consisted of 184 secondary school graduates from three secondary schools in Senica. Test TE- NA-TO was used for exploration of cognitive styles. At the same time we studied framing effect and anchoring and adjustment effect...

Lectures plurielles : former par la recherche à une approche plurilingue et plurilittéraciée de l’écrit à l’école / Plural readings : how to form to a multilingual approach of reading

Goletto, Livia 04 December 2013 (has links)
With a view to a mutilingual education as a mean to create a beneficial link between what is practised outside and beside school language and language itself, and the way in which the development of this one also allows the opening to plurality, we are interested in teacher training and the way they have the responsibility for preparing pupils into reading. Our object deals with research education as a micro-process of change which will modify teache practice, and more specifically the procedures by which the teachers on duty are given the view of an innovating didactic approach which is founded on the principles of a multilingual and intercultural education applied to the beginning of writing in learning. These processes are analyzed, through case studies and within an original device of in situ research education where teachers and researchers have a concerted action and where reflexivity stands as a main point. In this thesis, we intend to tell our itinerary of implied researcher, who, from the classroom, has led us to a training proposal by research, up to multilingual didactics. Through the exploration o first, the ordinary practice related to writing and reading learning, of representations, beliefs, the knowledge (RCS) implicit to these practices, and second, the analysis of teaching practices, we will try to define the processes of change which support their evolution.

The experiences of infertile married African women in South Africa : a feminist narrative inquiry

Makoba, Lerato Theodora 28 May 2008 (has links)
This study explores the experiences of infertile married African women in South Africa. The study explores the women’s emotional experiences, their experiences of their relationships and the possible ways in which their culture may have influenced their experiences. The literature review gives an overview of female infertility, motherhood and feminism- from its conception to its current status in South Africa. The study is carried out in a clinical setting where the participants are already attending an infertility clinic for treatment. Six black women participate in this study and they are all married and experiencing primary infertility. This study does not include women experiencing secondary infertility because although they may presently be infertile, they have previously experienced one or more successful pregnancies. Therefore, primary infertility is chosen as the focus of this study because unlike secondary infertile women, primary infertile women have never experienced pregnancy and childbirth and thus their infertility is more noticeable and severe. The study is qualitative in nature and it is conducted within a feminist social constructionist research paradigm. This research paradigm is deemed to be more relevant in researching an issue pertaining to women, because feminist research enables social scientists to explore women’s social history, women’s perception of their own situation, their own subordination and their own resistance (Mies, 1993). Through social constructionism, the women are each able to make meaning out of their experiences and to include the influences of their culture, gender and social context in the construction of their experiences. Furthermore, since feminist research perspectives have supported the process of telling sensitive human stories as research, a narrative approach is employed in gathering information regarding the women’s experiences of being infertile. Thus, through telling their own self-narratives, the women are able to relate their experiences as well as the events that took place in their lives regarding their infertility. Structural narrative analysis as well as content narrative analysis are employed in the analysis of the women’s narratives. What emerges from their stories is the hope and the subsequent disappointment that follows from their countless visits and consultations with different health professionals, both western and traditional, as they search for pregnancy. It also emerges that in addition to their personal experiences, these women’s marital and familial relationships, as well as their extended social relationships, also contribute to the emotional distress that they experience as a result of their infertility. Although most of the women mainly report negative experiences, there are also some who report positive experiences and some form of support in their lives. It is hoped that the results obtained from this study will enable psychologists to intervene effectively and to work collaboratively with other health professionals towards delivering services aimed at assisting infertile African women medically, socially and psychologically. / Dissertation (MA (Clinical Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Psychology / unrestricted

An interpretive phenomenological analysis of the effects of burnout as experienced by volunteer lay counsellors (VLCs)

Moodley, Joelene 27 September 2010 (has links)
This study aimed to explore and describe burnout from the perspectives of VLCs who struggled with this phenomenon at some stage during their work as VLCs. Phenomenology provided the epistemological framework and a qualitative research approach was used. Five in-depth interviews were conducted with five participants who are VLCs. The data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The participants’ stories were reconstructed as themes. A systematic analysis of the narratives was conducted and then linked to relevant literature. This study created an understanding of the complexity of burnout as it relates to VLCs. The themes highlighted the importance of exploring the experiences of VLCs and giving voice to their stories. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Psychology / unrestricted

A discourse analysis of the construction of menopause in South African newspapers

Munday, Jessica Leigh 06 December 2012 (has links)
The researcher aimed to explore the construction of menopause through and by available discourses within South Africa. A postmodern paradigm and social constructionist framework informed the choice of discourse analysis as methodology. South African newspapers containing texts related to menopause were utilised. English articles that are available on a publically accessible library database were selected. The basic guideline for selection of 37 texts was the keyword menopause. The researcher identified and explored eight dominant discourses and two supplementary discourses. The researcher concluded that discourses are interconnected and that each discourse is strengthened or resisted by multiple complementary and conflicting discourses forming a network through which society understands and experiences their reality. From engagement to corporal disengagement. : a sociological and plural approach of dynamics, ruptures and permanencies of identity against the acceptance of danger in outdoor sports

Routier, Guillaume 19 September 2011 (has links)
Defy or play with gravity, exploring the depths and bring their stamina or just their body, compete with the natural elements by frequenting, a priori, hostile environments: as many forms of sport exposure to danger that intrigue and fascinate at a time. This work is an exploration of the process of corporal engagement and disengagement, considered in their epistemic and empirical aspects. Two main questions mark this analysis: 1) how to conceive the corporal engagement in its complexity, through dialogue and complementary patterns of intelligibility; 2) more specifically, how do they become engaged in such activities, and why, suddenly, they decide to “hang up”?The analysis of thirty stories of sportsmen engaged in "at-risk" nature activities highlights the dynamic process of engagement, retention and disengagement. Thus, if commitment is rarely the result of chance, it is more than a mere reflexivity. Sometimes the commitment is born from experiences and unpredictable encounters. This work also confirms the results of many motivations studies of practitioners: search of sensation, autonomy, performance, subcultural emulation, etc. However, it differs from showing how these patterns of engagement, far from opposing, they are articulated and completed in a systematic way. Finally, after stressing the crucial role, in the eyes of the respondents, of the autonomy and the responsibility set up as true ethics, we show how difficult is to disengage. To hang up is a process experienced differently depending on whether the sportsman was prepared or not.To understand physical engagement requires a final enlargement as regards body, culture, risk and security, autonomy, and from a broader perspective, responsibility. Therefore, the body engagement constitutes a support in perfect harmony with its time: it mixes, combines, and sometimes objects the dynamics of identity induced by capacities, reflexivity and emotions

Rossoni, Estela Pitwak January 2013 (has links)
Considering the context of massification and commodification of Education , given the significant increase of Business Administration courses in Brazil , we explored the perceptions of undergraduate and graduate students on the skills developed undergraduate course of Business Administration taught on three campuses of the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR). We have particular interest in investigating how such training is aligned with the guidelines of the rules (National Law of Basic Guidlenes – LDB; National Curriculum Guidelines – DCN; Political Pedagogical Project – PPP) and market demands /organizations assigned to the courses found in theory. We adopted the French approach relating to notions of competence, an English competence model validated in Brazil through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in 2005 by Godoy et al. (2009), allowing for the search of deepening about the three major traditions of ethics and on reflexivity, super goal of that model. Starting from a predominantly quantitative approach, we applied structured questionnaires printed in survey type (2011 and 2012) , which were also sent in 2012 through a link to contacts, using the technique Snow Ball. We applied four instruments for data collection instruments ( 2 replicates ), aiming at identifying the degree of agreement (open and closed questions on a Likert scale of 6 points) on the development of skills, a) identify skills more and less developed, and to verify the agreement on guidelines of DCN 's (5-point Likert scale) and also to, b) identify aspects in the development particularly of ethics, values and reflexivity. The results allow to meet the objectives in the sense that all categories of skills were identified, with further development of social competence and less for the Technical Professional, observed some differences in perceptions between age groups and reasons for choosing the course, showing that experience and expectation formation influence perception. Disciplines such as Human Resource Management and Strategic Planning are the biggest contributors to the acquisition of skills desirable administrator. The training perceived partially aligns to the standards and demands, whose gaps deserve attention, deepening IFES investigative and intervention. While the demands for guided behavioral skills, subjects show greater development of related Troubleshooting and less development for Technical Professionals, dissenting in part of DCN 's and greater proximity of the proposed PPP and LDB. Development of Ethics and Values as well as reflexivity were identified and assigned to the SEM prepared in case of UNIR, where the capacity for reflection composes Basic and Dimension, Ethics and Values is Dimension that , along with Social Competence, form the Ethical Social Metacompetence, receiving influence of Functional metacompetency, composed by Technical Professional Dimension, and Basic Troubleshooting. There were also six in-depth interviews combined with laddering technique, supported by semi-structured routs, whose subjects, selected according to differing perceptions among age groups and reasons for choosing the course and the content analyzed categorically and interpretive corroborated to note what course‟s moments and what course‟s activities give opportunities to the “act” and being ethica”l, as well as to realize the perceived influences arising from reflection.
