Transition, text and turbulence: factors influencing children’s voluntary reading in their progress from primary to secondary school

Du Toit, Cecilia Magdalena 16 March 2005 (has links)
A basic premise of the investigation is that the acquisition and exercise of advanced reading skills are essential for effective adolescent learning. For the benefits of reading to accrue maximally, learners should continue to read avidly during leisure and long after basic reading instruction, traditionally the domain of the primary school, has ceased. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that influence the voluntary reading of some South African adolescents, specifically at an age when they undergo emotional, intellectual, social and physical changes which influence their behaviour, habits and choices. The research problem focuses on the transition from primary to secondary school, since extant literature shows that numerous factors influence adolescents’ reading habits during this phase, sometimes resulting in declining voluntary reading. Parameters for the investigation are set by the theoretical framework, centring on four domains that highlight the research problem, namely adolescence, literature, literacy and voluntary reading. Facets of these domains are explored, specifically motivation, qualitative change and the influence of home, school and community. Vygotsky’s theories on adolescent development underscore the research, as well as research on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation since, axiomatically, reading strategies develop optimally with high motivation. Stage-environmental fit theories - applied to motivation, self-efficacy or reading development - assert that learners have different sets of psychological, cognitive and psychosocial needs at different developmental levels, and unless these needs are met, academic achievement, appreciation for learning and effective reading development can decline. The often critical transition from primary to secondary school can result in a variety of lifestyle changes, and periodicity theories support the pattern and scaffolding of these transformational factors. Merging the relevant domains with developmental theories creates a matrix of Piagetian cognitive stratification. Chall’s model of developmental reading stages crafts an epistemological foundation and further refines constructivist principles developed by Vygotsky. Together they form a network explaining factors of transitional change that influence adolescents’ voluntary reading activities. The study’s methodology is delineated and followed by a description of the qualitative research design, data collection, data analysis strategies and ethical considerations. The course of the inquiry is refined in a closer focus on three domains and an explanation of the research instruments. The strengths and limitations of the study are discussed, as well as issues of reliability, validity, authenticity and generalisability. The empirical results are extrapolated from face-to-face interviews with ten respondents and their views generate the findings after a four-tiered analysis of the interview transcripts. Themes and conclusions are couched in three domains of the theoretical framework in an endeavour to address the research problem. The final chapter offers a synthesis by interweaving the theoretical outline and empirical findings. A hypothesis opening future avenues for investigation is identified, namely the factor of the internalisation of speech on reading in general and voluntary reading in particular. Two significant findings indicate that developmental stage theories effectively describe the transitional nature of the reading experiences of Grade Eight learners, and that intrinsic motivation, mastery learning and self-efficacy views play central roles in the continuation of voluntary reading. / Thesis (PhD (Learning Support, Guidance and Counselling))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

Literatura e estratégias de leitura no Ensino Médio : análise de proposta para a formação de leitores autônomos

Alves, Karina Feltes 13 September 2016 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the application of reading sequence in order to identify possible improvements in the reading formation process of High School students, considering the independent and effective use of reading strategies. The activities of the sequence, which constitute the empirical research, were planned under the methodological assumptions of Cosson (2014), regarding the elaboration of expanded sequence, and the American methodology of teaching reading strategies, proposed by Harvey e Goudvis (2007). In addition, the theoretical foundation of this study is constituted by the concepts of literature, as "human beings’ right", promulgated by Candido (1972, 1995), experience, as an element presented in reading activity, conferred by Larrosa (2002), and the concepts of mediation and interaction as fundamental to cognitive development and to the learning process, supported by Vigotski (1996, 2009). This study is an action research, conducted in 2015, with students of a first year class of a technical course integrated to High School, of a public institution, in Farroupilha-RS. The study results, constructed from questionnaires and written tasks performed during the implementation of the teaching proposal created by the researcher, indicate to advances in the development of reading skills of the investigated students, indicating correlations between the characteristics of independent readers and the strategies they use. The analysis evidences how the students, from the teacher’s mediation and the interaction with others, experienced the text and appropriated the reading strategies. It is noticed that the individuals investigated conceived the literary text as a tool that provides an opportunity of human knowledge and alternatives for personal liberation, contributing to the development of their reading competence.

Storytime at Irish Libraries : How public libraries can boostearly literacy through reading promotion events

O'Driscoll, Mariana January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to explore how libraries’ storytime for babies and toddlers can be construedas a reading promotion event which boosts early literacy, by ways of a multiple-case study of storytime at four public libraries in western Ireland. The study will also explore how the different libraries design these events and include different elements of traditional reading and storytelling, multimodal reading and technology, participation, and accessibility and inclusion through a sociocultural lens. The theoretical framework is constructed on the concepts and theory related to literacy development and reading promotion, and works as an analytical tool through which the empirical data collection will be examined. Data was collected through observations of storytimes at four public libraries in Ireland, as well as interviews with the involved librarians. The results show that although the librarians do not actively work to implement national and EU storytime templates, they offer programmes which are in tune with their participants’ needs, and invoke engagement and excitement about reading among children and parents or guardians alike.

Läsning för framtidens samhällsmedborgare : En analys av tre politiska diskussioner om barns och ungas läsning från 1910-talet, 1950-talet och 2010-talet / Reading for the citizens of the future : An analysis of three political discussions about children´s and young people´s reading in the 1910s, 1950s and the 2010s

Jonsson, Ellen January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how politic in the field of children´s and young people´s reading has been formulated and motivated during different periods. The analysis comprises political discussions from three periods: the 1910s discussion about how to promote good and inexpensive reading for pleasure, the 1950s political debate about light entertaining literature and comic books, and the political discussion about decreasing reading ability and reading promotion that followed the impaired Swedish results from PISA 2012. The overall issue for the thesis is how the view of children’s reading and children as readers that is expressed in the political discussions differs from each other, as well as how those differences could be explained in relation to the social and cultural policy context. The method is comparative history analysis. The resource material consists of documents from the Swedish Parliament and government official reports. A theoretical point of departure is the childhood studies research and the concept of children as beings or becomings. The analysis also uses theories about literary value and ideas about the function of reading. One of the findings is that children’s reading during all three periods is of great importance, for the children themselves as well as for the future of society. There are also differences. Over time, the discussion has moved from the question of a material lack of good books to a worry about inability and lack of interest in reading. While the 1910s and the 1950s discussions are about “good” and “bad” or “harmful” literature, the 2010s discussion pay more attention to reading as an activity and view reading in all its aspects as truly positive. It is also possible to see a shift in the debate from a collectivistic focus on public education and the citizen’s cultural progress, to a more individualistic approach that emphasizes participation and different ways to acquire literature. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Vad hände med sagostunden? : En kvalitativ intervjustudie med barnbibliotekarier i Sverige och Tyskland under covid-19-pandemin / What happened to storytime? : A qualitative interview study with children's librarians in Sweden and Germany during the COVID-19-pandemic

Ramirez-Hesseler, Victoria January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine what happened to library storytime sessions during the COVID-19-pandemic. Qualitative interviews were conducted with children's librarians from Sweden and Germany. In total eleven librarians working with children were interviewed. Five librarians from five libraries in Sweden and six librarians from five libraries in Germany took part. A model of three approaches to reading was used to analyze the empirical data collected from the interviews. Several aspects of what the librarians view as important in the storytime session were identified; the theoretic model used was not sufficient to reflect all aspects. Hence a fourth approach was created, putting emphasis on relationships within the reading situation and also the reading experience itself. The way the librarians describe how they adapted their storytime sessions during the COVID-19-pandemic shows that not all aspects could be transferred to the substitutes for storytime used, such as online storytime and outdoor storytime. Especially difficult to sustain was the aspect of building a relationship within the reading situation when resorting to online storytime. In Germany, a less favourable digital infrastructure further hindered transfer. There was also a pattern of viewing children as ”becomings” more often in Germany than in Sweden. The German librarians emphasize the role libraries can play in reducing socio-economic disadvantages for children in need of it and also link storytime ”fun” to possible positive consequences such as intellectual freedom. The Swedish librarians tend to view the reading experience during storytime as important in itself, which essentially is a children as ”beings”-perspective. In both countries, the librarians had to try new ways to reach young children during the pandemic. The study however suggests that in-person meetings is an intrinsic part of both Swedish and German children's librarianship. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Ta steget för att hitta din läsglädje! : En kvalitativ undersökning om folkbibliotekariers läsfrämjande arbete med hjälp av alternativa metoder

Andersson, Ida, Norlin, Jessica January 2022 (has links)
This thesis inquiries into the public libraries and librarians attitude towards and use of alternative methods in their reading promotion work for children aged 10–18. The statistics show that children's reading comprehension has decreased in surveys of PIRLS. Furthermore, highlights that children find it boring to read and experience reading as an obligation. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into if librarians at public libraries use alternative methods to inspire reading for children.    The study uses the theories Literacy Studies and the Sociocultural Perspective together with qualitative interviews as a method for obtaining empirical data for analysis. The findings that emerge from the informants' account of their reading promotion work are that they work with multimodal tools such as computer games, theater, puzzles, music, storyyoga and more. These tools are used as aids to both attract children to cross the threshold of the library and to take the story to another level. The digitization of their activities has enabled children to participate in public library activities on their own terms. It turns out that the story is more important to the children than reading the printed book. The public libraries also collaborate with other associations to reach out to children where they are located and work together to motivate the children to read. The movement activities for children aged 10–18 that are available and offered are, for example, yoga and interactive walking theaters. The children can be involved and their perspectives are taken advantage of in the development of the library activities that are aimed at the children.   The conclusion shows that librarians at public libraries use multimodal tools as alternative methods to stimulate children aged 10–18 to become readers and that children appreciate the public library.

Läslust eller läslus? : En undersökning om folkbibliotekariers läsfrämjande arbete i samarbete med skolor med bristande skolbiblioteksverksamhet / Reading for pleasure or performance? : A study of public librarians work with reading promotion in cooperation with schools with deficient school libraries

Johannesson, Lisa January 2023 (has links)
Differences in missions between public libraries and schools can cause tension while cooperating. For public libraries to cooperate with schools with deficient school libraries can be even more problematic, when the school is in need of school library services that is not a part of the public library mission. Meanwhile, a cooperation between public libraries and school can have several advantages for the public libraries in their mission of reading promotion. This study aims to examine how public librarians relate to their work with reading promotion towards children and young adults in collaborations with schools that have deficient school libraries. Qualitative interviews were carried out with a selection of four public librarians. The results were analysed in comparison to Hultbergs theory of strategies for reading promotion. In conclusion, the results of the study show that mainly relate to the cooperation with schools with deficient school libraries in terms of a self-interest for their reading promoting mission. The study also shows that the tension in cooperating with schools with deficient school libraries, as lived by the public librarians, is caused by a lack of freedom of choice, the question of compensating for the deficient school libraries and a misunderstanding of the public library mission.
