Hur kommer de svenska biblioteken att påverkas av bytet till Dewey? : En undersökning av tre folkbibliotek och ett forskningsbibliotek. / How will the Swedish libraries be effected by the switch to Dewey? : Studie of three public libraries and one research libraries.

Eriksson, Hampus, Flink, Tobias January 2012 (has links)
This bachelor thesis is a study about the change of the classificationsystems in Swedish libraries. The empirical data was collected through four qualitative interviews with both research and public libraries. The data was analyzed by the use of organizational theory based upon Joacim Hanssons book Libraries and identity: the role of institutional self-image and identity in emergence of new types of libraries. The empirical result points to a major change in how libraries and librarians look and work with their collections, it can also be said that the librarians do not seem to think that the users will be affected at all. The analysis was based on these issues:   What positive and negative effects introducing DDC will there be on research- reflective public libraries? What will be the effects on the librarysector introducing the new classification system DDC? What will be the effects on the users introducing the new classification system DDC?

Folkbibliotekariernas reaktioner på folkbibliotekens övergång till Dewey

Kousteni, Christina, Sedin, Therese January 2016 (has links)
Many libraries in Sweden have since 2008 started to switch their classification system fromSAB (The Swedish classification system) to Dewey (Dewey decimal classification system).Kungliga Biblioteket (National Library of Sweden) decided to switch classification systemfrom SAB to DDC in 2008 and recommend that all libraries in Sweden should also follow. Inrecent years, a number of public libraries have started the transition to DDC. Our thesisfocuses on the public libraries and the librarians view on the matter. The discussed questionsof the thesis are:1. How do the public libraries see a possible transition to DDC?2. Why have some of the public libraries changed their library system to DDC and others havenot? The empirical material of the thesis consists of 47 questionnaire responses that wherethereafter analyzed. Five of the public libraries that answered our questionnaire had began thetransition process to the DDC, thirty-nine of them only used SAB, although more than half ofthem where open to make the transition at some point in the future. Some of the publiclibraries didn’t want to change to DDC because they considered it a system that would not suitthe Swedish conditions very well and therefore preferred the Swedish system (SAB) more.Librarians are divided between those who are positive towards a transition to DDC and thosewho are not. We tried to analyze the librarians’ views from a psychological view based on atheory on individual ́s reactions towards organizational change. However, what we couldinterpret from the answers on our questionnaire, many of the librarians' considerations andthoughts regarding DDC are somewhat similar to earlier discussions about Dewey, which leadus to believe that there has not been made huge progress on the matter.

Siffror istället för bokstäver : Övergången från SAB till DDK i Sigtuna kommuns folkbibliotek

Boukhchana, Necim January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the transition from SAB to DDC in the public libraries of Sigtuna.More specifically, it aims at investigating why the decision was made to adopt the DDC and how the system has been implemented. Particular attention is drawn to the difficulties and problems that have arisen while organising the libraries open shelves with DDC and to the ways in which the difficulties have been handled. These questions are examined through a pragmatic perspective on Knowledge Organization that focuses on the contexts and domains in which the classification system is used. The empirical material is drawn from qualitative interviews with the former director of Sigtuna public libraries and with the in-charge of the catalogue department.

Ideologisk inverkan på SAB:s klassificering av arkeologiavdelning J / Ideological influence on Archaeology section J in SAB´s classification systems

Giniewska, Ewa, Albrechtson, Sophie January 2009 (has links)
The Swedish Library Classification System, known as the SAB-system, can be viewed as a product of the cultural and social norms and values in Sweden during the time in which it was created and subsequently reviewed. The main purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine the archaeology section J in the SAB-system, in order to observe if values and norms within this discipline had any impact on the Swedish Library classification system. Our intention is therefore to verify any correspondence between the choice of topics and hierarchical structure of that section, and the values and norms that ruled the Swedish society during the 20th century at large but with particular emphasis to the academic discipline of Archaeology. At the present, Archaeology is often disputed as a value-free interpretive science. Modern scientists are wondering if archaeological conclusions have ever been apolitical. This paper explores if altered attitudes and the socio-political changes through history, can be seen in the Swedish Library classification system. The imperialism, nationalism and left wing radicalization are some of the movements that are examined in this paper. The approach of this study is hermeneutical due to the importance of understanding the context. Literary studies of the history of Archaeology and Library and Information science have been used, and a comparison between all of the eight editions of the SAB-system has been conducted. The result of this study shows that even though the political and ideological changes had a great impact on the Archaeology as a science, there is little evidence that shows the dependency of the archaeology section in the SAB-system from the academic discipline itself. Regardless, the result also shows that the political and ideological changes through the 20th century greatly influenced the outlines of that particular section of the Swedish classification system.

Man måste ställa upp : Hylluppställning på svenska högskole- och specialbibliotek som klassificerar i DDC / Shelving Dewey : Shelving strategies among Swedish university and special libraries using the DDC

Ehn, Einar Gustav January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this master's thesis is to examine how shelving is organized among Swedish libraries that have switched from the Swedish classification system SAB to using the DDC, and what problems arise in this process. The method used is interviewing librarians at Swedish university and special libraries. The Swedish national library announced their swap to the DDC in 2008, and several libraries followed suit. The reported advantages with a switch were mainly that using an international classification system meant that Swedish libraries would no longer have to undertake a time consuming classification work, since most of the foreign literature already is Dewey classified. Disadvantages were that the DDC is not adapted to Swedish circumstances. Research on open shelving show that obtaining a browsable book collection requires a broad shelf classification. If libraries motivate their shelving solution by wanting browsable collections, efforts will be made to keep shelf classification broad enough. Certain categories have by tradition been shelved separately in Swedish libraries, and this study seeks to find out if a classification shift changes this custom, and if so, whether or not this is only attributable to the change of classification. Findings show that libraries motivated their swapping of classification mostly by the perceived flaws of the SAB system, and not by the promise of saving time, nor by the benefits of the DDC system. Most librarians seemed to lack sufficient knowledge of the DDC, which may be a reason why librarians claimed that the workload necessary to re-shelve the stock was the biggest drawback with switching to the DDC. Most libraries desired browsable shelves, and therefore used shelf lists to better be able to adapt the classification system to the stock. The custom of shelving certain categories separately survived the classification swap for some categories, but not for others. In the latter case this can be ascribed to a dwindling use of these specific categories by the patrons.

Så funkar avdelning C : en kvalitativ undersökning av användbarheten av SAB-systemets religionsavdelning i dagens svenska samhälle / The main class C (religion) of the Swedish classification system, and its usability in todays Swedish society : a qualitative survey

Blomkvist, Cecilia, Jonson, Karolina January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to find out whether the main class C (religion) in the Swedish classification system Klassifikationssystem för svenska bibliotek is well adapted to classify materials published in or imported to Sweden, and handled by Swedish libraries today. The questions we put to ourselves were:1.How easy to understand, and how useful is the main class C religion today?2.What, in the main class C, is satisfactory?3.What, in the main class C, is inconsistent, anachronistic or incorrect?4.What, in the main class C, is in need of change or renewal? The method that was used was a number of interviews with librarians and cataloguers. We have interviewed eight librarians from six different libraries, of different types, but all with a relatively large collection of religious materials.Though all of our respondents have expressed a feeling that all the major religions deserve equal treatment in the classification system and a similar division of space, after some pondering on the subject, our respondents have agreed that a larger space for Christianity is warranted considering the composition of the current collections and publication. Our respondents have in some cases expressed that there is a lack of instructions as to how the subdivisions of the main class C (religion) is meant to be used. Several of our respondents have experienced difficulty in reasoning theoretically about classification. Our research shows that the main class C (religion), according to our respondents, is well adapted to classify materials published in or imported to Sweden, and handled by Swedish libraries today. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Klassifikation av litteratur om film och TV : En komparativ studie av Klassifikationssystem för svenska bibliotek (SAB) och FIAF Classification scheme for literature on film and television / Classification of literature on film and television : A comparative study of Klassifikationssystem för svenska bibliotek (SAB) and FIAF Classification scheme for literature on film and television

Jakobsson, Anna-Karin January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to compare two different classification schemes with each other and see what the differences and similarities are when classifying literature concerning film and television. One of the schemes is of general kind, Klassifikationssystem för svenska bibliotek (SAB) and the other is a special system, FIAF Classification scheme for literature on film and television. The focus of the examination is on comparing the structure, contents and division of firstly the main classes and secondly on comparing the notation and the auxiliary tables in the schemes. The theoretical framework of the comparison is based upon theory of classification but the conclusions drawn are though mostly of a more subjective character. In addition to the comparison itself interviews have been made with four libraries, two with experiences of SAB and two with experiences of FIAF. The results of the study showed that the special system had a better breadth overall and that the possibilities for better specificity were much greater with that system, as expected. When comparing the overall structure of the schemes and how the classes were divided, the differences were negligible. The comparison of notation showed that the notation of the universal system was generally shorter and that the elements within it could be more easily distinguished. With the help of its auxiliary tables, the universal system turned out to make use of its resources in an even better way than expected. The interviews showed that both classification schemes were suitable in each organization. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Musikklassifikation : En jämförande studie av de tre generella klassifikationssystemen DDC, SAB och UDC / Music classification : a comparative study of the three general classificationsystems DDC, SAB and UDC

Eriksson, Jesper, Freij, Karl-Oskar January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this Master's thesis is to determine which of the three general classification schemes, DDC, SAB, and UDC is the most appropriate for classifying music documents. This is done by analysing and classifying 60 music documents such as recordings, scores and books about music. The codes resulting from the classification are analysed according to a number of evaluation criteria based on classification theory. The criteria focus on the systems specificity, exhaustivity, exclusivity, helpful sequence, hospitality, notation and that related classes are kept together. The study showed that the systems specificity in classification was of great importance in classifying music documents because of the diversity of music genres. SAB showed the best results in this respect, but the study also showed that DDC might become the best system for music classification in the future. The reasons for this are that DDC keeps related classes together, has a hospitable and easily readable notation, good exhaustivity and a helpful sequence. UDC and SAB have some of these benefits but do not match DDC. However, DDC needs a revision and an extension of the pop- and rock music section for better specificity. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Debatten om övergången från SAB till DDC : Hur ser den ut? / The debate about the transition from Classification system for Swedish libraries to DDC : What does it look like?

Svedberg, Jakob January 2012 (has links)
In 2008 the National Library of Sweden decided to give upClassification system for Swedish libraries and start using DDC(Dewey Decimal Classification) from January 1 2011. Thisdecision has influenced the whole Swedish library system and longbefore the National Library of Sweden took this decision thequestion had been thoroughly discussed and debated in Librariancircles. The aim of this thesis is to find out which arguments have beenintroduced in the debate, if the discussion has changed from beforethe decision to go over to DDC was taken to after wards, and if sohow it has changed. My thesis will discuss the following threequestions:• Which arguments were brought forward in the debate, both for and against a transition?• How has the debate about the Swedish libraries’transition from Classification system for Swedishlibraries to DDC changed from before the decision ofthe Royal Library was taken to after?• What conclusions can you draw from the debatewhich has been led about the transition to DDC?The empirical material consists of six articles dealing with thetransition to DDC and in the analysis of this material I have used atext analyses, analysis of. The analysis shows that more or less thesame arguments for and against have been used in practically allthe articles, and the debate has not changed very much. Theconclusion you can draw is, that the research libraries are the greatwinners and that much more research about the transition isnecessary. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Impact of San-mediated Signaling on Glioblastoma and Neuroblastoma Metabolism

Rodriguez Silva, Monica 22 June 2018 (has links)
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive type of brain cancer, with an average life expectancy of 15 months. The standard of care for GBM, surgery accompanied by radiation and chemotherapy (temozolomide-TMZ), has not changed in over 10 years illustrating the need for new and efficacious treatments. Therefore, it is imperative to improve our knowledge of GBM physiology to understand the mechanisms driving recurrence and chemoresistance so that more effective therapeutic options can be developed. Mitochondria-cell communication is key to monitor and maintain both mitochondrial and cellular health, and signaling events on the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) have emerged as a crucial signal integration site for cellular responses. Consequently, proteins on the OMM are crucial to determining cellular survival and dictating organelle physiology. Thus, the goal of our current study is to evaluate OMM proteins to determine how alterations in organelle regulation may impact CNS tumor biology. We first measured the concentrations of Bcl-2 family proteins on mitochondria from ten continuous GBM cell lines and correlated the protein levels to IC50values of genotoxic agents TMZ and irinotecan. We found that Bcl-2 levels corresponded to chemoresistance, while increased Bim concentrations promoted chemosensitivity. In contrast to our studies in gynecological cancers, the concentrations of the pro-dysfunction OMM scaffold protein Sab had no impact on chemosensitivity of the GBM cell lines, despite diminished Sab expression in GBM patients. However, we identified a novel truncated variant of Sab in the GBM cell lines. We found that GBM cells expressing only full-length Sab had a slower proliferation rate than those with the variant, which could be attributed to increased glycolysis in GBM cells expressing the Sab variant. To determine if the lack of Sab-mediated apoptosis was consistent across CNS tumors, we analyzed publicly-available patient data and found that Sab expression is down-regulated in neuroblastoma patients, a pediatric malignancy responsible for 12% of childhood cancer deaths. We found that that inhibiting Sab-mediated signaling in human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y cells) enhanced oxidative phosphorylation in a pyruvate dehydrogenase-dependent manner, increased BCl-2 levels (pro-survival), decreased Bim concentrations (pro-apoptotic), and promoted chemoresistance. Furthermore, examination of additional neuroblastoma cells derived from CNS tumors revealed that Sab levels correspond to proliferation rate, metabolic phenotype, and chemosensitivity. Our studies demonstrate the importance of OMM signaling in CNS tumor physiology and emphasizes the importance of cellular context to the outcomes of OMM signaling events.
