HIV/AIDS and behaviour change : from awareness to action - a study of students at the Pretoria TechnikonGradwell, Lynne 09 February 2005 (has links)
HIV/Aids has become a household term in South Africa. Most people are aware of the existence of the disease and how it is transmitted. Several people have used this information as the impetus for behaviour change but there are many individuals who have not heeded this call and have not made any significant changes to their lifestyles. This is reflected in South Africa’s high infection rate. It would seem as if, for various reasons, people know how to protect themselves but have not used this knowledge to guard against possible infection. The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why people have not changed their behaviour and to identify possible techniques that can be used to amend this situation. This will take the form of an intensive three-day prevention workshop where participants will be asked to think critically about their own behaviour. The aim of the programme will be to discuss, demystify and debate ideas. How will this programme be designed? The researcher will make use of focus groups consisting of Technikon students who will offer their thoughts and opinions. Once these focus groups have been conducted the researcher will undertake an intensive analysis of the data and identify certain key issues. A literature review will then follow. Therefore, the foundation of this programme will be based on the ideas of the participants, the researcher’s ideas and some points from formal behaviour change theories. The goal of this study is to add to the already growing body of HIV/Aids prevention literature and to design a programme that is useful and relevant. / Dissertation (MA (Counselling Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Psychology / unrestricted

School climate of adult basic education centresNkosi, Monde Eustice Gideon 12 September 2008 (has links)
This study explored the school climate of adult basic education centres by investigating the extent to which these education centres showed evidence of control, staff cohesiveness, physical resources, and safe and orderly environment. The study was inspired by a lack of school climate studies that focused on adult basic education centres as many school climate studies had concentrated on investigating the school climate of primary and secondary schools. The broad research question which was addressed in the research study was: ‘What is the nature of the school climate of adult basic education centres as perceived by educators?’ The participating educators were randomly selected and a survey – in the form of a questionnaire – was administered. The questionnaire comprised the four scales mentioned above. The items from the four scales were validated through the use of both face and content-related validity procedures. Face validity was ensured through pre-testing. Content validity was achieved through expert review of the items used. The extent to which these items could be included as part of a scale was further explored by means of reliability analysis whose acceptable coefficient alpha was benchmarked at 0.65 and above. Reliability was used to explore the reliability of the questionnaire. The aspect of reliability used for this purpose was analysis of internal consistency. The main purpose was to ascertain whether all the items used in the four scales collectively measured the construct school climate. For example, the reliability analysis for the variable control had 0.79 as its coefficient alpha whilst the reliability analysis for the variable staff cohesiveness, physical resources and safe and orderly environment had 0.76, 0.89, 0.84 as corresponding coefficient alpha respectively. This implied that most items within the four scales measured the construct control, staff cohesiveness, physical resources, safe and orderly environment as part of the construct school climate. Furthermore, the coefficient alphas of these four scales compared well with the overall coefficient alpha of 0.84 for this study, which further implied that each of the scales had an immense contribution in the measurement of the construct school climate. Based on the scale rubric designed for the variable control (high score 28-21: moderate score 20-14; low score 13-0), the results from the analysis indicated that the centres under review had a fair level of control mechanisms in place as in all these centres the mean score varied between 23 and 25. On the basis of the scale rubric devised for staff cohesiveness (high score 32-24; moderate score 23-16; low score 15-0), it was also revealed that the majority of the centres had evidence of staff cohesiveness, as no low score was recorded for in most cases the mean score revolved between 22 and 25. Although, the results further indicated that there was an average degree of physical resources in most centres, it also became clear that not all centres had the same level of physical resources at their disposal as the majority of the centres had a mean score that fluctuated between 18 and 33. The scale rubric for physical resources was: between 40-30 for high score; between 29-20 for moderate score and between 19-0 for low score. Finally, the mean score for the variable safe and orderly environment alternated between the minimum mean score of 17 and the maximum mean score of 21. Based on the latter mean scores, it became clear that the majority of the centres had a safe and orderly environment level that fell within the moderate score category (between 20-14) whilst the remaining two centres had a high score category (between 28-21) and no centre had a low score category (between 13-0). / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

3D printed food and customized siliconemolds : Investigating aesthetic appearance and food preparingmethods for a dysphagia dietMonfared, Karlo January 2020 (has links)
Dysphagia is a serious eating disorder currently affecting around 100 thousand people in Sweden and it’s estimated that 1 in 10 people will develop some form of dysphagia during their lifetime around the world. The condition occurs mainly in elders and people who’ve suffered a stroke. The disorder prohibits proper swallowing of food, impairing the ability to close airways and let food enter the proper pathways. Patients with dysphagia have to eat grounded food in order to not suffer from malnutrition. The food is usually served in timbales which are sometimes decorated but might not look as appealing or realistic as one might think. The repetitive and unrealistic food creates further appetite loss which may lead to malnutrition. This is the case amongst many elderly in home care and the complications maybe very serious indeed, leading to organ dysfunction, hospitalization and eventually death. The current timbales made at the kitchens for elderly care in Helsingborg are punched with a tool in rectangular, circular shapes and often decorated. A solution would be to increase the aesthetics of the served timbales and make them realistically looking. 3D printing offers numerous new opportunities for food production and may very well set a standard in the future for producing aesthetically pleasing food. Silicone molds may also provide the same, if not better results at the time being at a fraction of the price, sufficing to revert any negative impacts of the current timbale appearance. In the hopes of proving both concepts the work will initially be focused on preparing a broccoli but also applying one of the concepts on a cinnamon bun providing additional application. This report presents the progress of designing a realistic 3D broccoli model, product development of a realistic broccoli food mold, 3D scanning, 3D food printing and a literature study. The designed model could not be printed due to the printing gel’s incapability of supporting complex structures. Instead master shapes created for shaping the food mold were scanned, sliced and printed. The same masters were used as means for a second food mold. Both food molds did manage to cast realistic shapes with a broccoli puré and of a soft gelatine suspension. Material alternatives were evaluated as well as manufacturing possibilities. The designed broccoli and a refined scanned broccoli were both offered for free as means for further research and development.

Empatie učitele a žáků / The teacher's and the pupils' empathyKryllová, Kateřina January 2021 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the teacher's and the pupils' skill of empathy and its connection to the effectiveness of the learning process. In the theoretical part of the thesis the author defines empathy and states the issue of its definition. The author also focuses on the topic of development of empathy and how it is connected to the safe classroom environment. Also, the factors that influence the level of empathy within a person are explained. The thesis describes the role of empathy in the communication of a teacher and the pupils and how communication blocks obstruct expressions of empathy. The influence of empathy in the educational process is described on areas where emotions of the pupils play a key role. The thesis describes the possibilities of the teacher's development of empathy as well as practices that allow this development with the students of first five grades in elementary school. The aim of the empirical part is to find out how the future teachers view empathy. The research is aimed at finding out how students of education define empathy, whether they think it can be cultivated, whether teachers can influence the level of empathy of their students and if so, how. The second aim of the empirical part is to create and teach a lecture that would bring a deeper understanding of...

Electro-thermal and Radiation Reliability of Power Transistors: Silicon to Wide Bandgap SemiconductorsBikram Kishore Mahajan (11794316) 19 December 2021 (has links)

We are in the midst of a technological revolution (popularly
known as Industrie 4.0 or 4th Industrial Revolution) where our cars are being
equipped with hundreds of sensors that make them safer, homes are becoming
smarter, industry yields are at an all-time high, and internet-of-things is a
reality. This was largely possible due to the developments in communication,
electronics, motor controls, robotics, cyber security, software, efficient
power distribution, etc. One of the major propellants of the 4th Industrial
revolution is the ever-expanding applications of power electronics devices. All
electrical energy will be provided, handled, and consumed through power
electronics devices in the near future. Therefore, the reliability of power
electronics devices will be instrumental in driving future technological
advances.

A myriad of devices is categorized as power electronics
devices, and in the heart of those devices are the transistors. Although
Silicon-based transistors still dominate the power electronics market, a
paradigm shift towards wide bandgap semiconductors, such as silicon carbide
(SiC), gallium nitride (GaN), beta-gallium oxide etc., is underway. However,
realizing the full potential of these devices demands unconventional design,
layout, and reliability.

In this thesis, we try to establish a generalized model of
reliability for power and logic transistors. We start by defining a
comprehensive, substrate-, self-heating-, and reliability-aware safe operating
area (SOA) that analytically establishes the optimum and self-consistent
trade-off among breakdown voltage, power consumption, operating frequency, heat
dissipation, and reliability before actual device fabrication. Then we take a
deeper look into the reliability of individual transistors (a beta-gallium
oxide transistor and a Silicon-based LDMOS), to test the predictions by the
safe operating area, using both experiments and simulations. In the beta-gallium
oxide transistor, we studied its implementation in a DC-DC voltage converter
and concluded that the self-heating is a performance bottleneck and suggested
approaches to alleviate it. For the LDMOS transistor, we investigated the hot
carrier degradation (HCD) using experiments and simulations. We established
that the HCD degradation kinetics is universal, and physics is the same as a
classical transistor, despite a complicated geometry. Finally, we studied the correlation between
HCD and radiation in LDMOS used in space shuttles, airplanes, etc., to
determine its lifetime.

We have holistically analyzed the reliability of power transistors
by extending the theories of logic transistors in this thesis. Therefore, this
thesis takes us a step closer to a generalized reliability model for power
transistors by developing a comprehensive and predictive model for the safe
operating area, encompassing all sources of stresses (e.g., electrical,
thermal, and radiation) it experiences during operation.

Ett designbidrag till minskad rädsla för att falla : Forskning genom design / A design proposal to ease the fear of falling : Research through designEkberg, Lottie January 2021 (has links)
With the background in fall accidents as a significant public health issue, causing both individual suffering and a large social cost, the study examined product designers’ opportunities to create accessible, useful products worth using, for people over 65, who suffers from fear of falling (FHM, 2021). In a general comment to the UN’s sustainable development goal’s, the importance of practising Universal Design (UD) in design of all new products is clearly expressed (UN, 2013). With a globally ageing population and within a broad target group, it became central to explore how to reach a more common practice of UD in the industry of product design (WHO, 2018). The design process was supported by the principles of UD (Story, Mueller & Mace, 1998) combined with Emotional Design and Norman’s (2004) three levels of emotion. The study also included theories from gerontological research on the phenomenon of Fear of falling (FoF), which indicates that a higher level of FoF is expressed by people when it is put in relation to an activity (Lachman et al., 1998). The study’s empirics were mainly generated from the methods Questionnaire and Diary study, which showed a widespread strategy among users, to handle FoF through activity restriction. The activity to reach highly placed objects at home became central after the discovering that the participants often use other equipment and furnishing than a designated step stool. The study’s design proposal resulted in a step stool, which should not justify using a kitchen chair for the activity. The study contributes closing a knowledge gap, which can benefit the design industry with a visually tangible analysis result of both measurable and emotional value in a product.
