January 2017 (has links)
This research seeks to investigate the applications aimed at establishing affective and sexual dates and relationships between gay public, the Grindr and Hornet, popularly disseminated after the invention of smartphones in which it is possible to locate them geographically. The purpose of this investigation was to trace clues about how the affective and sexual relationships between men have taken place in the contemporary in the midst of digital medias. From a cartographic method, inspired on Deleuze and Guattari, was possible to think about some questions, such as: ethical and methodological challenges in doing research about and on the internet; conceptual challenges about the recent medias made viable by the new information technologies; and about a "architecture of romantic choices" from which was possible to list some hegemonic culture elements (gender, race, sexuality, culture and economic capital, age, among others) that crosses the individual choices of the users, getting itself deterministic on the way how, men that search sex and affective contacts with another men through the applications, establish their relationships in a contributing way with the establishment of sexual and affective market. This market is characterized by neoliberal traditionally elements, such as: law of supply and demand, an increase of rationalism and the individualism through of competition permitted by a commoditization of the self to compete for sexual dates and affective relationships / Mestre

Privacy Preservation for Nearby-Friends and Nearby-Places Location-Based Services

Hezaveh, Maryam 24 May 2019 (has links)
This thesis looks at the problem of discovering nearby friends and nearby places of interest in a privacy-preserving way using location-based services on mobile devices (e.g., smartphones). First, we propose a privacy-preserving protocol for the discovery of nearby friends. In this scenario, Alice wants to verify whether any of her friends are close to her or not. This should be done without disclosing any information about Alice to her friends and also any of the other parties’ information to Alice. We also demonstrate that our approach can be efficiently applied to other similar problems; in particular, we use it to provide a solution to the socialist millionaires' problem. Second, we propose a privacy-preserving protocol for discovering nearby places of interest. In this scenario, the proposed protocol allows Alice to learn whether there is any place that she is looking for near her. However, the location-based service (LBS) that tries to help Alice to find nearby places does not learn Alice’s location. Alice can send a request to the LBS database to retrieve nearby places of interest (POIs) without the database learning what Alice fetched by using private information retrieval (PIR). Our approach reduces the client side computational overhead by applying the grid square system and the POI types ideas to block-based PIR schemes to make it suitable for LBS smartphone applications. We also show our second approach is flexible and can support all types of block-based PIR schemes. As an item of independent interest, we also propose the idea of adding a machine learning algorithm to our nearby friends’ Android application to estimate the validity of a user's claimed location to prevent users from sending a fake location to the LBS application.

Studies on performance aspects of smart wireless devices and related network services

Unknown Date (has links)
This study is a focused effort on elucidating the performance aspects of modern, handheld wireless devices and associated mobile network services. Specifically addressed thereof are: (i) Assessing the performance details on certain hardware sections of smart handheld devices and (ii) determining the performance profile of market penetration considerations vis-à-vis provisioning mobile networks. To meet the scope of this research, the projected efforts are exercised in compiling relevant literature and deciding the said hardware and technoeconomic performance issues. Hence, written in two parts, Part A is devoted to hardware performance details of smart, handheld devices relevant to (a) delay issues in PCB layouts; (b) crosstalk problems at the baseband level (audio/multimedia) using EMI concepts and (c) ascertaining non-catastrophic EMP/EMI effects at the RF-sections so as to implement protection strategies via compensating networks. Part B is concerned with the technoeconomics of wireless networks in supporting mobile (handheld devices). Correspondingly, two market related considerations versus service performance details are considered. The first one refers to deducing a relative performance index that includes technology (mobile speed) details plus economics profiles of the users in the service area. The second task refers to elucidating a performance index of such services in terms of hedonic pricing heuristics. The theoretical aspects of the test studies as above are supplemented with experimental and/or simulation details as appropriate. Hence, the efficacy of performance details are discussed in real-world applications. Lastly, possible research items for future studies are identified as open-questions. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The presence of smartphones in contemporary society has great consequences on several instances, changing the way the public relates with media and its products. Journalism, which throughout its history has passed through numerous changes, is been affected by mobile devices, in what would be the main ‘revolution’ on journalism since internet has become accessible to a considerable public, in the end of the 90’s. Right now, mobile applications, softwares developed mainly for smartphones and tablets users, become the main expression of journalism on portable digital devices. To understand how journalism presents itself on mobility, identifying its main characteristics and interactive features, which can stimulate or make the public participation possible, is the objective of such dissertation. To do so, we are using the theoretical perspective of materialities of communication, following the works of Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. Throughout the study, we present some concepts developed by the german theorist, besides a brief history of the telephone as a media and a short discussion about the place of mobility in contemporary society. To identify mobile journalism characteristics, we analyzed several mobile apps from brazilians and international newspaper, aiming to identify and present interactives features in such products.

Multisensory Smartphone Applications in Vibration-Based Structural Health Monitoring

Ozer, Ekin January 2016 (has links)
Advances in sensor technology and computer science in the last three decades have boosted the importance of system identification and vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil infrastructure safety and integrity assessment. On the other hand, practical and financial issues in system instrumentation, maintenance, and operation have remained as fundamental problems obstructing the widespread use of SHM applications. For this reason, to reduce system costs and improve practicality as well as sustainability, researchers have been working on emerging methods such as wireless, distributed, mobile, remote, smart, multisensory, and heterogeneous sensing systems. Smartphones with built-in batteries, processor units, and a variety of sensors, have stood as a promising hardware and software environment that can be used as SHM components. Communication capabilities with the web, enable them to compose a smart and participatory sensor network of outnumbered individuals. Besides, crowdsourcing power offered by citizens, sets a decentralized and self-governing SHM framework which can even be pertained by very limited equipment and labor resources. Yet, citizen engagement in an SHM framework brings numerous challenges as well as opportunities. In a citizen-induced SHM scenario, the system administrators have limited or no control over the sensor instrumentation and the operation schedule, and the acquired data is subjected change depending on the measurement conditions. The citizen-induced errors can stem from spatial, temporal, and directional uncertainties since the sensor configuration relies on smartphone users’ decisions and actions. Moreover, the sensor-structure coupling may be unavailable where the smartphone is carried by the user, and as a consequence, the vibration features measured by smartphones can be modified due to the human biomechanical system. In addition, in contrast with the conventional high fidelity sensors, smartphone sensors are of limited quality and are subjected to high noise levels. This dissertation utilizes multisensory smartphone features to solve citizen-induced uncertainties and develops a smartphone-based SHM methodology which enables a cyber-physical system through mobile crowdsourcing. Using smartphone computational and communicational power, combined with a variety of embedded sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and camera, spatiotemporal and biomechanical citizen-induced uncertainties can be eliminated from the crowdsourced smartphone data, and eventually, structural vibrations collected from numerous buildings and bridges can be collected on a single cloud server. Therefore, unlike the conventional platforms designed and implemented for a particular structure, citizen-engaged and smartphone-based SHM can serve as intelligent, scalable, fully autonomous, cost-free, and durable cyber-physical systems drastically changing the forthcoming trends in civil infrastructure monitoring. In this dissertation, iOS is used as the application development platform to produce a smartphone-based SHM prototype, namely Citizen Sensors for SHM. In addition, a web-based software is developed and cloud services are implemented to connect individual smartphones to an administrator base and automate data submission and processing procedure accordingly. Finally, solutions to citizen-induced problems are provided through numerous laboratory and field test applications to prove the feasibility of smartphone-based SHM with real life examples. Through collaborative use of the software, principles and methodologies presented in this dissertation, smartphones can be the core component of futuristic smart, resilient, and sustainable city and infrastructure systems. And this study lays down an innovative and integrated foundation empowering citizens to achieve these goals.

This research aims to investigate how the landscape can be worked in the classroom through photographs produced by the students themselves with their mobile smartphone cameras. In order to do that, initially there was a literature review regarding the landscape study in the teaching of Geography, as well as on the use of Mobile and Wireless Technologies in the teaching-learning process. Also, questionnaires were applied to a ninth grade class composed of twenty-four students aged between fourteen and seventeen years old of a public elementary school, located at Pelotas/RS. Through the answers obtained in the questionnaires, it was possible to determine that the students in the class had cell phones with integrated camera and internet access, both through Wi-Fi and mobile networks. This fact enabled the planning of an activity which used these two features available on all devices. Because the subject for the trimester, according to the Geography curricular program, was the European continent, the students were invited to photograph landscape elements in the city of Pelotas that presented some type of European influences, due to the colonization processes that happened in the city, in the past. With that, the several landscapes portrayed by the students were analyzed, highlighting the importance of this kind of activity in the teaching and learning of geography in the classroom, showing that smartphones can be an important teaching tool in the construction process of geographical knowledge. It was possible to see that the analysis of the landscape of the city in which the students live can contribute to the perception they have about the world, as well as learning the geographical concepts that, usually, seem so far from reality, but are present in almost all daily actions

Among them is the inappropriate use of smartphones / tablets for students, among the academic activities. These mobile devices, for their variety of prices are available for everyone, and because of that they are present in almost all parts of the day. Smartphones / tablets today have thousands of applications for many different uses, no matter the operational system they use. On the other hand, in the educational field, these devices are not yet part of the classroom routine productively; on the opposite, are elements of distraction to the students. In an attempt to take advantage of this feature as a pedagogical tool for the teaching of math, taking advantage of the presence of the students equipments in classes, came the proposal to create and use an application called AGA, which runs on the Android operating system, for the use in classes that addressed primary topics of analytic geometry, such as marking points in the Cartesian point and distance between points on the plane. It is important to highlight that among the available operating systems, Android dominates the smartphone / tablet market. The building application for this research was developed through an integrated development environment MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). It is a simple and interactive way to build applications for the Android operating system for mobile devices. The use of the application in mathematics lessons took place in a class of the third year of high school in a state school, located in Serop?dica City. For the assessment of the experiment, they were applied in the research group, tests before and after the activities, addressing the working content and motivation to study mathematics. Such tests allowed the analysis of the impact of the work developed in class and efficiency of the construction and use of the AGA.
