Some Conclusions of Statistical Analysis of the Spectropscopic Evaluation of Cervical Cancer

Wang, Hailun 03 August 2008 (has links)
To significantly improve the early detection of cervical precancers and cancers, LightTouch™ is under development by SpectRx Inc.. LightTouch™ identifies cancers and precancers quickly by using a spectrometer to analyze light reflected from the cervix. Data from the spectrometer is then used to create an image of the cervix that highlights the location and severity of disease. Our research is conducted to find the appropriate models that can be used to generate map-like image showing disease tissue from normal and further diagnose the cervical cancerous conditions. Through large work of explanatory variable search and reduction, logistic regression and Partial Least Square Regression successfully applied to our modeling process. These models were validated by 60/40 cross validation and 10 folder cross validation. Further examination of model performance, such as AUC, sensitivity and specificity, threshold had been conducted.

Biržų miesto centrinės dalies urbanistinės struktūros regeneracija / Regeneration of the central part of Biržai urban structure

Gaudiešiūtė, Gintarė 08 July 2009 (has links)
Biržai - is one of the unique towns of Lithuania with a castle of XV century. Biržai old town is an urban monument of national importance which does not have the exact status and clear structural limits. They are replaced without any researches and it is unclear what the criteria are for the design of this part of the city. Towns historical developed structure is overestimated - the central part of the town and the Old Town. On the basis of historical sources, the indicators of the site built, research of morphological individual layers elements, clear structural limits of the values of urban areas (Old Town, the city center, the buffer zone), and protected areas (urban heritage, archaeological heritage, the urban reserve) are determined.. The relevant planning and activity regulations are offered for each area and the new urban spaces as well as improvement principles for their structure and composition.

Community Catalyst: Architectural Rehabilitation of the Alianza Market

Villarreal De Lara, Sofia 06 July 2011 (has links)
This thesis represents a speculation for the improvement of the Alianza Market located in the city of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. Torreon is part of a tri-city entity with a population of 1.2 million residents. The Alianza market was the first marketplace in the city, founded about 100 years ago. The site is located in an area with a high level of poverty across the entire district. Due to corruption and negligence on the part of the government, the social and economic standing of the market has suffered a tremendous decline in the past 30 years. Through the careful study of the existing site, this thesis proposes the reorganization of the market to improve its spatial qualities. The market represents the social and economic heart of its community which is kept alive solely by its members. By proposing the design of a public open square within the market site I intend to provide a space for the celebration of public life. Reviving the market will help to create economic life as well as improve street level life in the surrounding community.

A NEW TEST TO BUILD CONFIDENCE REGIONS USING BALANCED MINIMUM EVOLUTION

Dai, Wei 16 August 2013 (has links)
In phylogenetic analysis, an important issue is to construct the confidence region for gene trees from DNA sequences. Usually estimation of the trees is the initial step. Maximum likelihood methods are widely applied but few tests are based on distance methods. In this thesis, we propose a new test based on balanced minimum evolution. We first examine the normality assumption of pairwise distance estimates under various model misspeci cations and also examine their variances, MSEs and squared biases. Then we compare the BME method with the WLS method in true tree reconstruction under different variance structures and model pairs. Finally, we develop a new test for finding a confidence region for the tree based on the BME method and demonstrate its effectiveness through simulation.

Using Verbal Protocol Analysis to Explore Canadian Consumers' Comprehension of the Nutrition Facts Table

French, Laura J 13 August 2012 (has links)
The current study compared participants’ ability to perform tasks using two nutrition labels: a control Nutrition Facts table of the current Canadian format (n=64), and an experimental label (n=64), identical to the control label with the exception of a footnote explaining how to interpret percent daily values. A 25% subset of participants answered questions using a think aloud technique, and data was analyzed using content analysis. The main outcome measured was ability to interpret percentages correctly, with ability to compare, define and manipulate information as secondary outcomes. No significant differences were seen in ability to perform tasks between the experimental and control conditions for any outcomes. As determined by chi square tests, higher performance was associated with higher education, being male, and report of previous Nutrition Facts table use. Verbal protocol analysis identified that interpretation of percentages was based on the meal, food type, and comparison to other foods.

Biological models with a square wave driving force

Closson, Taunia Lydia Lynn, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2002 (has links)
Systems that require a driving force of some kind are very common in physical and biological settings. Driving forces in a biological context are usually referred to as rhythms, pulses or clocks. Here we are interested in the effect of adding a square wave periodic driving force to a biological model. This is intended to model inputs from biological circuits with all-or-none or switch-like resposes. We study a model of cell division proposed by Novak and Tyson. Our switched input is intended to model the interaction of the mitotic oscillator with an ultradian clock. We thoroughly characterize the behaviour as a function of the durations of the active and inactive phases. We also study a model of vein formation in plant leaves proposed by Mitchison. Pulsed hormonal release greatly accelerates vein formation in this model. / x, 105 leaves : ill. (some col.) ; 29 cm.

Reality and Computation in Schubert Calculus

Hein, Nickolas Jason 16 December 2013 (has links)
The Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem (previously the Shapiro Conjecture) asserts that a Schubert problem has all solutions distinct and real if the Schubert varieties involved osculate a rational normal curve at real points. When conjectured, it sparked interest in real osculating Schubert calculus, and computations played a large role in developing the surrounding theory. Our purpose is to uncover generalizations of the Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem, proving them when possible. We also improve the state of the art of computationally solving Schubert problems, allowing us to more effectively study ill-understood phenomena in Schubert calculus. We use supercomputers to methodically solve real osculating instances of Schubert problems. By studying over 300 million instances of over 700 Schubert problems, we amass data significant enough to reveal generalizations of the Mukhin-Tarasov- Varchenko Theorem and compelling enough to support our conjectures. Combining algebraic geometry and combinatorics, we prove some of these conjectures. To improve the efficiency of solving Schubert problems, we reformulate an instance of a Schubert problem as the solution set to a square system of equations in a higher- dimensional space. During our investigation, we found the number of real solutions to an instance of a symmetrically defined Schubert problem is congruent modulo four to the number of complex solutions. We proved this congruence, giving a generalization of the Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem and a new invariant in enumerative real algebraic geometry. We also discovered a family of Schubert problems whose number of real solutions to a real osculating instance has a lower bound depending only on the number of defining flags with real osculation points. We conclude that our method of computational investigation is effective for uncovering phenomena in enumerative real algebraic geometry. Furthermore, we point out that our square formulation for instances of Schubert problems may facilitate future experimentation by allowing one to solve instances using certifiable numerical methods in lieu of more computationally complex symbolic methods. Additionally, the methods we use for proving the congruence modulo four and for producing an

Advancing the Theory and Utility of Holographic Reduced Representations

Kelly, Matthew 12 August 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, we build upon the work of Plate by advancing the theory and utility of Holographic Reduced Representations (HRRs). HRRs are a type of linear, associative memory developed by Plate and are an implementation of Hinton’s reduced representations. HRRs and HRR-like representations have been used to model human memory, to model understanding analogies, and to model the semantics of natural language. However, in previous research, HRRs are restricted to storing and retrieving vectors of random numbers, limiting both the ability of HRRs to model human performance in detail, and the potential applications of HRRs. We delve into the theory of HRRs and develop techniques to store and retrieve images, or other kinds of structured data, in an HRR. We also investigate square matrix representations as an alternative to HRRs, and use iterative training algorithms to improve HRR performance. This work provides a foundation for cognitive modellers and computer scientists to explore new applications of HRRs. / Thesis (Master, Computing) -- Queen's University, 2010-08-10 12:50:04.004
