The New Skyline of Berlin : A 3D GIS shadow and visibility analysis at the Alexanderplatz

The capital of Germany Berlin will undergo a change in its skyline in the next few years.Due to a new housing policy that allows the construction of higher buildings, Berlinwill soon have several skyscrapers over 130 m high directly at Alexanderplatz as wellas next the Berlin landmark, the Berlin TV Tower.With the help of ArcGIS, the newbuildings are shown in 3D along with the impact of these buildings on the view to theTV Tower and the shadows cast by the new buildings on the Alexanderplatz. It is shownthat due to the new buildings, some areas around the Alexanderplatz no longer have acomplete view to the TV Tower. The shadow cast by the buildings will only slightlychange the current shadow cast on the Alexanderplatz, but neighbouring areas aroundthe Alexanderplatz will now be affected more by shadows.

The Autonomy of the City: Re-Imagining Political Belonging and Agency

<p>This dissertation examines the apparently conflicting dynamics of movement and control. It does so by taking a unique approach to exploring these dynamics of movement and control by de-centering the state as the assumed site of authority of such dynamics. While traditional IR approaches situate the state as the authority for controlling and facilitating movement across borders, this study – which focuses on the movement of refugees and asylum seekers – de-stabilizes that authority by considering the ways in which other actors and spaces influence and resist these dynamics. Specifically, I consider the ways in which cities and migrants themselves might shape the apparently ‘global’ or ‘state’ processes of determining who enters and belongs in a particular political community. By de-centering – but not dismissing – the authority of the state in these matters, it becomes evident that definitions of political community are not only highly ambiguous but also somewhat autonomous from the state. The city emerges as a fundamentally different sort of political space from the state. The city – though not <em>separate</em> from the state – exceeds the state and opens up different possibilities for belonging politically than those made possible by ‘seeing like a state’</p> <p>These theoretical issues are contextualized in this study through the case study of the MV Sun Sea, a ship which arrived off the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada in August 2010 carrying 490 Sri Lankan asylum seekers. This case is explored from three angles – ‘seeing like a state’, ‘seeing like a city’, and ‘seeing like a refugee’ – in order to consider the dynamics of movement and control and the ways in which the autonomies of cities and migrants themselves reshape political space and subjectivities.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A New Technique for the Calculation and 3D Visualisation of Magnetic Complexities on Solar Satellite Images

Yes / In this paper, we introduce two novel models for processing real-life satellite images to quantify and then visualise their magnetic structures in 3D. We believe this multidisciplinary work is a real convergence between image processing, 3D visualization and solar physics. The first model aims to calculate the value of the magnetic complexity in active regions and the solar disk. A series of experiments are carried out using this model and a relationship has been indentified between the calculated magnetic complexity values and solar flare events. The second model aims to visualise the calculated magnetic complexities in 3D colour maps in order to identify the locations of eruptive regions on the Sun. Both models demonstrate promising results and they can be potentially used in the fields of solar imaging, space weather and solar flare prediction and forecasting.

Analyzing Two Key Points of the Huaihai Campaign Using Sun Tzu's Net Assessment

This thesis focuses on the Huaihai Campaign (Nov. 6 1948 - Jan.10 1949) in the Chinese Civil War (1927-1936, 1949-1950). This war involved the Republic of China’s (ROC) Kuomintang Party (KMT) and the emerging Communist Party of China (CPC). Over the course of a few months and around one million combatants, the Communists pulled off a resounding victory dealing the final blow to the KMT which led to the CPC’s governance over mainland China. This case study of two key turning points in the Huaihai Campaign is analyzed using Sun Tzu’s five net assessments from The Art of War. Although the KMT appeared the much superior force on paper, they were dealt a decisive blow during the Huaihai Campaign. This thesis uses Sun Tzu’s five net assessments to explain the root cause of KMT decision failings. The KMT failures stemmed from ignorance of the most basic and vital military axioms of assessing advantages and disadvantages before going into battle.

This thesis argues for a critical examination of the published writings of Le Sony'r Ra, also known as Sun Ra, a groundbreaking jazz musician and philosopher of the 20th century. Recent redistribution of Sun Ra's musical output, which includes hundreds of releases on many record labels from the 1950's onward, has prompted a critical renaissance towards his influence on jazz orchestration, band management, do-it-yourself ethics, and structured improvisation In spite of this resurgence of interest in his music, his written corpus has failed to produce a comparable level of criticism or discussion. It is my firm belief that it is the body of work's relative scarcity in print, not its value as literature, that has kept the material underground for such a lengthy period of time. With the recent republication of Sun Ra's daunting body of poetry and prose, the discovery of early manuscripts, and the surfacing of relevant critical essays, the time has come to analyze his poetic position within the context of African-American philosophical thought. / Master of Arts

Mesmerizing Moon Mysteries: Unraveling the Compositions of Irregular Mare Patches (IMPs) Using Remote Observations

Compositional characterization of lunar surface features informs our understanding of the Moon's thermal and magmatic evolution. We investigated the compositions of hypothesized volcanic features known as irregular mare patches (IMPs) and their surroundings to constrain formation mechanisms. We used six datasets to assess the composition of 12 IMPs: 1) Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) derived spectral parameters (e.g., band center positions, shapes), 2) Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Diviner Radiometer Experiment (Diviner) measured Christiansen feature (CF) position, 3) SELENE (Kaguya) Multiband Imager (MI) FeO abundance, 4) Clementine 5-band (Ultraviolet/Visible)-derived FeO abundance, 5) LRO Wide Angle Camera (WAC) TiO2 abundance, and 6) LRO Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) derived single scattering albedo. Our analysis suggests that some IMPs are compositionally unique from their surroundings, while other IMPs exhibit ambiguous compositional trends, which is consistent with the wide variety of geologic settings in which IMPs are situated. Large IMPs are similar to surrounding low albedo dark halos, which could suggest a formation association between IMPs and these dark halo materials. Spectral and photometric comparisons suggest that IMPs' compositions are compatible with Apollo 11 and 17 high-Ti mare basalts, as well as a group of synthetic high-Ca pyroxenes. Future remote sensing orbiters with high spatial resolution are essential to resolve the compositions of smaller IMPs as well as the distinct smooth and rough morphological regions within larger IMPs.

Dynamo Magnétohydrodynamique en champ moyen

De nos jours, il est bien accepté que le cycle magnétique de 11 ans du Soleil est l'oeuvre d'une dynamo interne présente dans la zone convective. Bien qu'avec la puissance de calculs des ordinateurs actuels il soit possible, à l'aide de véritables simulations magnétohydrodynamiques, de résoudre le champ magnétique et la vitessse dans toutes les directions spatiales, il n'en reste pas moins que pour étudier l'évolution temporelle et spatiale de la dynamo solaire à grande échelle, il reste avantageux de travailler avec des modèles plus simples. Ainsi, nous avons utilisé un modèle simplifié de la dynamo solaire, nommé modèle de champ moyen, pour mieux comprendre les mécanismes importants à l'origine et au maintien de la dynamo solaire. L'insertion d'un tenseur-alpha complet dans un modèle dynamo de champ moyen, provenant d'un modèle global-MHD [Ghizaru et al., 2010] de la convection solaire, nous a permis d'approfondir le rôle que peut jouer la force électromotrice dans les cycles magnétiques produits par ce modèle global. De cette façon, nous avons pu reproduire certaines caractéristiques observées dans les cycles magnétiques provenant de la simulation de Ghizaru et al., 2010. Tout d'abord, le champ magnétique produit par le modèle de champ moyen présente deux modes dynamo distincts. Ces modes, de périodes similaires, sont présents et localisés sensiblement aux mêmes rayons et latitudes que ceux produits par le modèle global. Le fait que l'on puisse reproduire ces deux modes dynamo est dû à la complexité spatiale du tenseur-alpha. Par contre, le rapport entre les périodes des deux modes présents dans le modèle de champ moyen diffère significativement de celui trouvé dans le modèle global. Par ailleurs, on perd l'accumulation d'un fort champ magnétique sous la zone convective dans un modèle où la rotation différentielle n'est plus présente. Ceci suggère que la présence de rotation différentielle joue un rôle non négligeable dans l'accumulation du champ magnétique à cet endroit. Par ailleurs, le champ magnétique produit dans un modèle de champ moyen incluant un tenseur-alpha sans pompage turbulent global est très différent de celui produit par le tenseur original. Le pompage turbulent joue donc un rôle fondamental au sein de la distribution spatiale du champ magnétique. Il est important de souligner que les modèles dépourvus d'une rotation différentielle, utilisant le tenseur-alpha original ou n'utilisant pas de pompage turbulent, parviennent tous deux à produire une dynamo oscillatoire. Produire une telle dynamo à l'aide d'un modèle de ce type n'est pas évident, a priori. Finalement, l'intensité ainsi que le type de profil de circulation méridienne utilisés sont des facteurs affectant significativement la distribution spatiale de la dynamo produite. / It is generally agreed upon that the 11-year magnetic cycle of the Sun arises through the action of an internal dynamo operating in the convective zone, and perhaps also immediately beneath it. Although the computing power of current supercomputers is sufficient to allow fairly realistic magnetohydrodynamical simulations of this dynamo process, to study the temporal and spatial evolution of the large-scale solar magnetic field over long timescales, it remains advantageous to work with simpler models. Thus, to better understand the physical mechanisms at the origin and maintenance of the solar dynamo, we used a simplified formulation, known as a mean-field model. By using a complete alpha-tensor extracted from a global MHD model of solar convection [Ghizaru et al., 2010] as input to a kinematic axisymmetric mean-field dynamo model [Charbonneau & MacGregor, 1997], it becomes possible to study the effect of the electromotive force on the magnetic cycles produced by the global model. In this way, we are able to reproduce some of the observed characteristics of the Ghizaru et al., 2010 simulation, in particular magnetic cycles. The axisymmetric magnetic field produced by the mean-field dynamo model exhibits two distincts dynamo modes. These modes, with similar periods, are present and peak at substantially at the same radii and latitudes as the sonlly-averaged magnetic fields extracted from the global model. Thanks to the spatial complexity of the alpha-tensor, we can reproduce these two dynamo modes. In contrast, the ratio of the periods of the two modes present in the mean field model differs significantly from that found in the global model. In addition, the accumulation of strong magnetic fields at the base of the convective zone disappears in a model where differential rotation has been removed. This suggests that differential rotation plays a significant role in the accumulation of magnetic fields in this region. Furthermore, removing the turbulent pumping component of the alpha-tensor produces a very different magnetic field cycle. Therefore, turbulent pumping plays a crucial role in the spatial distribution of the magnetic field. It is important to underline that the models without differential rotation, with or without turbulent pumping, both succeed in producing an oscillatory dynamo using only the turbulent electromotive force. However, the dynamos materializing in these modified models are significantly different from that using the full alpha-tensor. Finally, both the intensity and form of meridional circulation profiles are significant factors affecting the dynamo modes.

Local and regional information in the age of electronic media : a comparative study (United States - France)

La concurrence est en voie d’extinction dans l’industrie de la Presse Quotidienne Régionale en France et des grands journaux « metropolitan » des Etats-Unis. La concurrence est un débat économique et sociétal récurrent dès qu’il s’agit de médias. La pluralité des voix est considérée à tort ou à raison comme un des piliers de la démocratie représentative. Elle est protégée par des lois en France et aux Etats-Unis visant à réguler la concentration. Force est de constater que ces textes restent sans efficacité sur le terrain. Les économistes sont partagés quant à l’effet de la concentration sur les affaires. Certains soulignent une baisse du lectorat//audience dans les départements en situation de monopole. La corrélation dominante cause/effet n’a jamais été prouvée, dans la mesure où le déclin de la presse a d’autres raisons. Les partisans de la concentration avancent les avantages financiers de cette situation, principalement des économies d’échelle et la possibilité de fixer les prix hors de la réalité d’un marché concurrentiel. Mais cette époque est révolue. Notre sujet est pourtant pionnier au sens où la concurrence redevient la règle sur le marché de le publicité numérique et également des «informations ». Des starts-up se multiplient aux Etats-Unis défiant les groupes historiques dans une compétition certes encore très asymétrique, La France semble toujours en retard quant à cette émergence d’entrepreneurs régionaux. A travers des études de cas, nous tenterons de prouver que la concurrence marketing et éditoriale a encore un effet dopant sur les ventes « papier » (compétition Ouest-France et Télégramme ou sur Chicago à moindre échelle). / Due to concentration, in the United States and France, competition is about to be eradicated in the local and metropolitan newspaper industry. Some scholars regret the lack of pluralism which is historically the function of the press in a representative democracy. Pluralism is highly regulated by the states, but laws could not prevent concentration. Economists are divided about the impact of concentration regarding business. Some point out that circulation has dropped in newly monopolistic areas. But they do not provide the undoubtedly proof of a correlation between those two facts. Economies of scale and financial benefits (price-fixing) of a monopolistic position may justify concentration on an economic level. Some companies have enjoyed double-digit profit while in a monopolistic position. But this time is over. The emergence of the Internet has generated a highly competitive market regarding advertising and news business. Our topic is thus not lamenting the good old days of competition, but it is pioneering. In the United States, many start-ups, mostly non-profit, challenge the legacy regional and metropolitan newsgroups the same way that already big groups do nationwide, such as Buzzfeed or Quartz or Vox. Entrepreneurs, in a Schumpeterian meaning, strive to replace stagecoach owners and build the railways of the future. The trend is much less clear in the French case.Our research wants to assert that marketing and full editorial competition still boosts circulation and business (Brittany in France) and is an unavoidable rendezvous for the legacy groups in the digital news era because they are forced to abandon the corporate culture of the past.

Study of the formation of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and shocks in coronal mass ejections / Estudo da formação da instabilidade Kelvin-Helmholtz e choques em ejeções de massa coronal

The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are phenomena that evidence the complex solar activity. During the CME evolution in the solar wind (SW) the shock and sheath (Sh) are established. With these, the transfer of energy and shock thermalization have origin through several processes like instabilities and particle acceleration. Here, we present two studies related to CMEs. In the first study, we analyze the existence of the KelvinHelmholtz instability (KHI) at the interfaces CMESh and ShSW. For this purpose, we assumed two CMEs that propagate independently in the slow and fast SW. We model velocities, densities and magnetic field strengths of sheaths, and SW in the CMEs flanks, in order to solve the Chandrasekhar condition for the magnetic KHI existence. Our results reveal that KHI formation is more probably in the CME that propagate in the slow SW than in CME propagating in the fast SW. It is due to large shear flow between the CME and the slow SW. Besides we find that the interface ShSW is more susceptible to the instability. In the second study, we examine the distributions of particle acceleration and turbulence regions around CME-driven shocks with wave-like features. We consider these corrugated shock as the result of disturbances from the bimodal SW, CME deflection, irregular CME expansion, and the ubiquitous fluctuations in the solar corona. We model smooth CME-driven shocks using polar Gaussian profiles. With the addition of wave-like functions, we obtain the corrugated shocks. For both shock types are calculated the shock normal angles between the shock normal and the radial upstream coronal magnetic field in order to classify the quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular regions linked to the particle acceleration and turbulence regions, respectively. Our calculations show the predisposition of the shock to the particle acceleration and indicate that the irregular CME expansion is the relevant factor in the particle acceleration process. We consider that these wave-like features in shocks may be essential in the study of current problems as injection particle, instabilities, downstream-jets, and shock thermalization. / As ejeções de massa coronal (do inglês coronal mass ejections, CMEs) são consideradas traçadores da atividade solar. Durante a evolução das CMEs no vento solar (do inglês solar wind, SW), o choque e o envoltório (do inglês sheath, Sh) são estabelecidos. Nesta fase, a transferência da energia e a termalização do choque podem ter origem através de vários processos, entre eles instabilidades e aceleração de partculas. Aqui nós apresentamos dois estudos relacionados às CMEs. No primeiro estudo, analisamos a existência da instabilidade KelvinHelmholtz (KHI) nas interfaces CMESh e ShSW. Para isto, supomos duas CMEs que se propagam independentemente no SW lento e rápido. Modelamos as velocidades, densidades e a intensidade do campo magnético dos envoltórios e SW nos flancos das CMEs, a fim de resolver a condição de Chandrasekhar para a existência da KHI magnética. Nossos resultados revelam que a formação da KHI pode ser mais provável na CME que se propaga no SW lento do que na CME que se propaga no SW rápido. Isto é devido a um maior cisalhamento entre a CME e o SW lento. Além disso, encontramos que a interface ShSW é ser mais suscetvel à instabilidade. No segundo estudo, examinamos as distribuições das regiões de aceleração de partculas e turbulência em choques ondulados com caractersticas semelhantes a ondas. Assumimos choques ondulados como resultado de perturbações do SW bimodal, deflexão da CME, expansão irregular da CME, e flutuações onipresentes na coroa solar. Construmos choques sem ondulações usando perfis Gaussianos. Com adição de funções semelhantes a ondas, obtemos os choques ondulados. Para ambos tipos de choques, calculamos os ângulos entre o vector normal ao choque e o campo magnético coronal radial, assim classificamos as regiões como quase-paralelas e quase-perpendiculares que são ligadas às regiões de aceleração de partculas e turbulência, respectivamente. Nossos cálculos mostram a predisposição do choque para o fenômeno de acceleração de partculas, e indicam que a expansão irregular da CME é o fator de maior relevância neste processo. Consideramos que assumir ondulações nos choques pode ser essencial nos estudos de problemas atuais como injeção de partculas, instabilidades, jatos e termalização dos choques.
