Culture and Gender Appropriate Responses in Child Friendly Spaces : An Ecological Comparative Analysis of Guidelines and Manuals

Hansson, Alfred January 2019 (has links)
Children around the world suffer greatly due to conflicts. One of the most common interventions to support children affected by conflicts are Child Friendly Spaces (CFSs). Implemented within different cultural contexts, CFSs aim to be both culturally sensitive and contribute to gender equality, an interaction that can be complex. Previous research regarding CFSs is limited. As CFSs are commonly used in Humanitarian Action, further knowledge is central. This thesis aims to explore and compare how culture and gender appropriate responses in CFSs guidelines and manuals are expressed in order to gain an increased understanding of how these guidelines handle the interaction between gender norms in different cultures. In this study I discuss six CFSs guidelines and manuals by conducting comparative analysis and applying the Ecological Resilience Framework. The result suggests that culture and gender appropriate responses are central in all guidelines and manuals but emphasized in different ways. The participation of children, families and communities, as well as the adaption of activities, are all strategies aimed at cultural sensitivity. The result also entails that the equal inclusion of all children is a general gender appropriate approach. In addition, I claim that the main intervention, aiming to be both gender and culture appropriate, is separated groups between boys and girls. Finally, I argue that gender and culture may clash due to different perceptions of gender and culture appropriate responses.

Daher, Ali 08 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Sveriges ensamkommande barn. En studie av konstruktionen flyktingbarnet. / Children who come themselves to Sweden. A study of the construc-tion ”refugeechild”.

Bergström, Malin January 2002 (has links)

Children who have fled to Sweden, without their parents or guardians, have been a controversial subject during the winter of 2002. Their situations on refugeestations and the responsibiliy by community and the state have been discussed. My composition is about these children. The composition is not about the situations of the children - focus is instead on the people who operate with the children; community, state and organisations. I want to find empirical levels which show what the children associate with. I have found three levels that I have called: "A institutional refugee", "To be refugee - a problem which must be solved "and "Child or refugee?". These levels contains different subjects as laws, cultural, living and childhood wich together make a picture about what the "refugeechild" means to those who figure in my composition. I have been inspired by discourse, postcolonialism and nationalism. I want to understand why the term "refugeechild", in my sence has a meaning of a duel between a discourse about"children"and"refugees".

Αποδοτικές τεχνικές προσαρμοστικής ισοστάθμισης διαύλου βασισμένες στη μέθοδο Conjugate Gradient / Efficient techniques for channel equalization based on the Conjugate Gradient method

Λάλος, Αριστείδης 16 May 2007 (has links)
The use of iteration methods for adaptive equalization has received considerable attention during the past several decades. The Least Mean Squares (LMS) method, which has found widespread use owing to its simplicity, has poor convergence properties. The Recursive Least Squares (RLS) method possess superior convergence properties, but it is computationally intensive and has high storage requirements for matrix manipulations. In this MSc thesis the technique of conjugate gradients is applied for the adaptive filtering problem. Conjugate gradient algorithms for adaptive filtering applications suitable for efficient implementation has been developed and has been applied for the design of an adaptive transversal equalizer. Low cost block algorithms using the preconditioned conjugate gradient method are also discussed. The algorithms are capable of providing convergence comparable to RLS schemes at a computational complexity between the LMS and the RLS methods and does not suffer from any known instability problems.

Suvoktos tėvų globos bei kontrolės ir valgymo sutrikimų turinčių merginų specifinių asmenybės ypatumų sąsajos / Relations between conceived parental care and control and specific personality features of women with eating disorders

Gražulytė, Rūta 26 June 2014 (has links)
Tyrime naudotos šios metodikos: valgymo sutrikimų simptomatikos išreikštumui vertinti naudotas sutrumpintas Požiūrio į valgymą skalės (EAT) variantas – EAT-26 skalė, suvoktos tėvų globos bei kontrolės lygiui vertinti – Tėvų-vaiko ryšio klausimynas (PBI); savigarbai – M. Rosenberg savigarbos skalė (RSES), polinkiui į perfekcionizmą – Daugiamatė perfekcionizmo skalė (MPS-F), o negatyviai emocinei nuostatai į save – Negatyvios emocinės... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In literature it is widely agreed that parental-child relations are especially important for development of child’s personality and for psychological health of a child. Parental-child bonding is also correlated with eating disorders. The correlations between parental care and control and various personality features of a child are checked in different researches. But we failed to find a study, where the aforementioned correlations had been tested in the same sample. Furthermore in clinical practice it is noticed that patients with eating disorders are tend to feel hostility to themselves as far as are prone to self-hatred. However there are few studies where such negative emotions to self is analyzed. And we failed to find a research where this issue had been analyzed quantitatively. So the aim of this study is to assess the correlations between conceived parental care and control, eating disorders and specific personality features: self-esteem, perfectionism and negative emotional attitude to self. There were two groups of respondents in this study. One of them consisted of women with eating disorders (N=39) and the other – of controls (N=30). The methods used in this study were: the strength of the symptoms of eating disorders was measured with shortened form of Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), the level of conceived parental care and control was assessed with Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), self-esteem was tested with M. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the level of... [to full text]

The experiments aimed at assessing the interference of weeds on the soil temperature, on the growth of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), and on the efficiency as to the use of water in the referred to type of crop when submitted to weed handling strategies within the systems no-trillage and conventional planting. The trials were assembled in a split-plot scheme, distributed within the experimental design , in randomized blocks with four replications. Within the plots, two planting systems were assessed (no-trillage and conventional), and, within the subplots, three weed handling strategies soil covering with black polyethylene film, with regular weeds, and with no weeds, were assessed. Within each subplot, sensors were installed at a depth of 5 cm for the purpose of measuring the soil temperature. Data were collected every 10 minutes and stored in dataloggers. As for the first experiment, the collected data led to the determination the temperature variation throughout the day from 20 to 30 days after transplanting (DAT), the average maximum and minimum temperatures every 5 days, and the daily temperature range during the crop cycle. On the 60th and 147th days after transplanting, the density as well as the dry mass of the weeds were assessed within the treatment with no weeds. Regarding the second experiment, what was assessed was the growth of sweet pepper, submitted to weed handling strategies within no-trillage and conventional planting systems. To attain such an objective, eight assessment times were established (0, 21, 42, 63, 84, 105, 126 e 147 DAT). The assessed features were: leaf area per plant, leaf area index, dry mass of leaves, of stem, of fruits, and the total dry mass per plant, leaf area ratio as well as the rates of absolute and relative growth and of net assimilation. On the 30th and 90th DAT, the weeds density and the dry mass were assessed in the treatments with no weeds. As to the third experiment, the water consumption and the sweet pepper s productivity were assessed. Based upon the relationship between productivity and water consumption, the efficiency as with water use (kg of fruit m-³ of water) was determined. On 0, 21, 42, 63, 84 e 105 DAT, the density and dry mass of weeds were assessed in the treatments with no weeds. Irrigation was done by way of dripping water, with different water supply to each subplot in order that the soil would be maintained with at least 80% of the total available water, based upon water tension in the soil. It was found that the soil temperature was influenced by the covering types, with wider temperature ranges and maximum temperatures in the treatments with weeds and in the treatments with the soil covered by polyethylene film within the conventional planting system as compared to the no trillage direct planting with regular weeds. The no-trillage system proved to be a suitable technique for growing sweet peppers under a high temperature condition. The no-trillage system displayed higher growth rates than those displayed by the conventional planting in all weed handling strategies. The highest rates were observed in the no-trillage with weeds; besides, this type of planting reduces infestation and the weeds dry mass accumulation. Insofar as the third trial is concerned, it was found that the weeds interference increased water consumption and reduced the sweet pepper productivity within the two planting systems; however, the conventional planting displayed stronger effects. The treatment with weeds in the direct planting displayed greater fruit productivity and greater efficiency as for water use as compared to the others.

Topics On Security In Sensor Networks And Energy Consumption In IEEE 802.11 WLANs

Agrawal, Pranav 12 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Our work focuses on wireless networks in general, but deals specifically with security in wireless sensor networks and energy consumption in IEEE 802.11 infrastructure WLANs. In the first part of our work, we focus on secure communication among sensor nodes in a wireless sensor network. These networks consists of large numbers of devices having limited energy and memory. Public key cryptography is too demanding for these resource-constrained devices because it requires high computation. So, we focus on symmetric key cryptography to achieve secure communication among nodes. For this cryptographic technique to work, two nodes have to agree upon a common key. To achieve this, many key distribution schemes have been proposed in the literature. Recently, several researchers have proposed schemes in which they have used group-based deployment models and assumed predeployment knowledge of the expected locations of nodes. They have shown that these schemes achieve better performance than the earlier schemes, in terms of connectivity, resilience against node capture and storage requirements. But in many situations expected locations of nodes are not available. We propose a solution which does not use the group-based deployment model and predeployment knowledge of the locations of nodes, and yet performs better than schemes which make the aforementioned assumptions. In our scheme, groups are formed after the deployment of sensor nodes on the basis of their physical locations. Nodes in different groups sample keys from disjoint key pools, so that compromise of a node affects secure links of its group only. Because of this reason, our scheme performs better than earlier schemes as well as the schemes using predeployment knowledge, in terms of connectivity, storage requirement, and security. Moreover, the post-deployment key generation process completes sooner than in schemes like LEAP+. In the second part of our work, we develop analytical models for estimating the energy spent by stations (STAs) in infrastructure WLANs when performing TCP-controlled file downloads. We focus on the energy spent in radio communication when the STAs are in the Continuously Active Mode (CAM), or in the static Power Save Mode (PSM). Our approach is to develop accurate models for obtaining the fractions of times the STA radios spend in idling, receiving and transmitting. We discuss two traffic models for each mode of operation: (i) each STA performs one large file download, and (ii) the STAs perform short file transfers with think times (short duration of inactivity)between two transfers. We evaluate the rate of STA energy expenditure with long file downloads, and show that static PSM is worse than using just CAM. For short file downloads, we compute the number of file downloads that can be completed with a given battery capacity, and show that PSM performs better than CAM for this case. We provide a validation of our analytical models using the NS-2 simulator. Although the PSM performs better than the CAM when the STAs download short files over TCP with think times, its performance degrades as the number of STAs associated to the access point (AP) increases. To address this problem, we propose an algorithm, which we call opportunistic PSM (OPSM). We show through simulations that OPSM performs better than PSM. The performance gain achieved by OPSM increases as the file size requested by the STAs or the number of STAs associated with the AP increases. We implemented OPSM in NS-2.33, and to compare the performance of OPSM and PSM, we evaluate the number of file downloads that can be completed with a given battery capacity and the average time taken to download a file.

Globální a lokální programy: Výhody globálních přístupů na příkladech vzdělávání v rozvojových zemích / Global and Local Initiatives: Advantages of "the Global" in Development Education Programmes

Šuráňová, Dorota January 2016 (has links)
International development aid is one of the main elements of international relations and politics. It has taken place since the 1950's through great international organisations and institutions. Nevertheless, the international approach towards development has been considerably criticized. Critics have pointed out the generality of methods of development and the "one size fits all" paradigm. These programmes did not reflect and adapt enough to the conditions of specific areas, and preferred centralised approaches. At the same time a range of regional and local development initiatives has emerged. Despite the great success of local forms of aid, the international aid is still widely in demand and not decreasing. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the advantages of international presence in developing education programmes, with the following research question: What benefits do international organisations or institutions bring to national education programmes? Based on participatory observation of education systems in the Philippines and Myanmar, the thesis assesses the main advantages of international development programmes and the benefits for their participants. On the example of two international non-governmental organisations, namely Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult...
