Etude et compréhension des mécanismes d’auto dépréciation et d’auto-affirmation des personnes obèses / Study and understanding of mechanisms of self depreciation and of self-affirmation of obese people

Pena Pena, Manuela 16 November 2015 (has links)
The aims of this thesis are to understand the processes of self-depreciation and self-affirmation in obese people. 209 obese and 920 normal-weight people took part in this six experiment thesis. We first examined social representations related to obesity and obese people, according to intergroup contact. Then we developed and validated a weight related stigma feeling questionnaire. Finally, we tested coping strategies and self-affirmation effects (ie, protocol Napper, Epton and Harris, 2009), on self-image measures, in normal-weight and obese people.Firstly, results show that when there is contact between an obese and a non-obese person, their social representation is more empathetic than without contact. Secondly, we tested the validity of the weight related stigma feeling questionnaire (sensitivity, content validity, reliability). This questionnaire determines individual stigmatizing experiences frequency associated with emotions experienced in those situations. Finally, we highlight that self-affirmation technique, through Napper, Harris and Epton's protocol (2009), causes self-centering and social comparison effects that could interfere in obese people's self-image enhancement process. Our work helps to emphasize the personal and social identity processes involved in treating obese people’s image question. We propose an analysis framework of identity processes involved in weight related rejection feeling.

Among Nursing Students : Differences Depending on Age, Year at School, and Previous Experience of Psychological Help

Björnermark, Samuel, Aspman, Tatsiana January 2021 (has links)
This study aimed to increase knowledge about self-stigma and attitudes to seeking psychological help among Swedish nursing students, due to the high sick leave rates among nurses and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its accompanying negative consequences on mental health. The study focused on the relationship between self-stigma and attitudes, as well as how they are influenced by age, previous experiences of psychological help and education. Data were collected with the self-assessment forms Self-Stigma of Seeking Psychological Help Scale and Mental Help Seeking Attitudes Scale, which were answered by 171 nursing students at Linnaeus University, Växjö. The study showed that people with lower self-stigma had a more positive attitude towards help-seeking behavior, and that previous experience of psychological help varied significantly with the level of self-stigma, but not with an attitude towards help-seeking behavior. Neither age nor level of education were significant. The results of the study emphasized the importance of self-stigma in the design of supportive efforts to promote help-seeking behavior, and the need for more studies in the field.

A Re-Evaluation of Stuart's Police Officer Stigma Scale

Burzee, Zachery D 01 January 2022 (has links)
Stigma about mental illness is often identified as one of the most prominent obstacles to seeking mental health services. This seems to be particularly true among first responders. Unfortunately, the research regarding stigma in first responders is lacking. This may be due, in part, to the absence of appropriate measurement tools to allow such research. Stuart’s Police Officer Stigma Scale (POSS) has recently been developed to address this issue, but its psychometric properties have gone largely untested. Therefore, this study sought to identify the underlying factor structure and internal consistency of the POSS. This paper used a sample of one hundred and thirty-five first responders. This paper used a sample of one hundred and thirty-five first responders. Sixty participants were police officers, forty-eight were firefighters/EMTs, three were dispatchers, and twenty-four did not complete some portion of the scale/training and were omitted. Using factor analysis with an orthogonal rotation on Stuart’s eleven-item POSS, the participant’s results revealed two main components. Component one is “maltreatment of colleagues with a mental disorder,” and component two is “fear of disclosing a mental disorder.” Findings from this research are similar to the results of previous studies with components such as unwillingness to disclose a mental health condition, fear of how the public will treat an individual with a mental disorder, and anger towards those who decide to seek treatment or get diagnosed with a mental illness. These findings imply that Stuart’s POSS is reliable but needs to include two components rather than one. With the two main components, further research can now be conducted to understand why and ultimately mitigate maltreatment or stigma against first responders with a mental health condition.

Rahimova, Julia, Hani, Elisa January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to create a deeper understanding when it comes to how self stigma can  develop in children with parents that have harmful alcohol consumption. The questions of interest in this study are how adults describe their thoughts and self image during their childhood based on Patrick Corrigan and Frederick Millers theory about self stigma. The other question of interest is the following: which strategies are used by children to cope with self stigmatisation in relation to stigma and shame? The theoretical framework that we are using is the sociologist Erving Goffman's theory about stigma as well as the sociologist Charles Cooley's definition of shame. The questions in this study will be answered from  analysing six autobiographies of adults retelling their childhood with parents that have had a harmful use of alcohol. The analyse will be from a hermeneutics point of view and will also be categorised into four themes in order to analyse the content. The results unveil that all the adult children have had avoidance based coping strategies, the difference is in how they chose to avoid feelings of family shame and stigma.
