The temporal cut has its beginning in the Renaissance, historical period in which the individual himself reaches a higher level of emancipation and human value (overvalued individuality) indeed. On that specific historical context, the collectiveness is relinquished, turning to individualism. The temporal cut of this thesis points specifically to the construction problem of the person enclosed within himself and his meeting with Brazilian contemporary society, involving with different social groups and their collective aims. It has been seen and approached that when someone is involved with social groups, the individualism of the person enclosed within himself is disclosed, egoistically carrying out his deeds on behalf of himself. The subject enclosed within himself began focusing on himself the totality of all things, from all to everything, enclosing himself. Therefore, this thesis holds the assumption that contemporary barbarity has its thresholds through new ways of individualism with the birth of the person enclosed inside himself.

Rakovsky, Jozef 24 September 2012 (has links)

Qualitative-portable to quantitative-laboratory LIBS

Rakovsky, Jozef 24 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) offers possibility for fast de- tection of sample composition without its preparation. For this reason it is attractive anywhere where the fast detection and no sample preparation are needed. As in many other branches the technical and scientific progress im- proves and spreads the possibilities of LIBS based devices and laboratory appa- ratuses. The time-resolved spectroscopy is allowed by spectrograph equipped with fast camera, broadband spectra can be acquired in single exposition by broadband spectrometers. Smaller and lighter laser sources together with com- pact spectrometers can be implemented to portable device and can be used out of laboratory. Computers offer quick data processing. The device named ChemCam installed on the NASA's next Mars rover, curiosity, is good exam- ple of high technology application in LIBS. However, there are still challenges and we hope that this work will be fruitful for anyone who is interested in the LIBS. The project of presented thesis was performed as a joint supervision project between the Department of Experimental Physics at Comenius University in Bratislava and Laboratiore Interdisciplinaire Carnot de Bourgogne at Univer- sit ́e de Bourgogne in Dijon. The aim of the project was to join experience from both laboratories, experience in laser constructions from Dijon and experience with spectroscopy from Bratislava. The both are essential for LIBS. In Bratislava the work was coordinated by prof.Pavel Veis and it was fo- cused on LIBS under the laboratory conditions. The time-resolved broadband spectrometry was used in the research. In order to achieve required spectra, the spectral response of the optical system was determined which was later used for the corrections. The research of self-absorption phenomena started in the last period with aim to use this effect, usually considered as negative, for the composition determination. In Dijon the work was supervised by Dr. Olivier Musset and directed toward development of LIBS device which could be used out of laboratory. The small 6 7 laser which was previously developed in the laboratory was implemented in the device. The development was successfully finished and testing process began in the last period of the thesis. The geological samples have been used for the testing process which was performed in deep cooperation with geologists. The first chapter comprises a brief introduction to LIBS. It is divided into some parts about laser induced plasma, laser induced breakdown and evolution of the plasma after breakdown. The section dealing with local thermodynamic equilibrium is also included. The section describes importance of LTE and the possibilities to determine this state. The second chapter is dedicated to the developed portable LIBS device. In the introduction, different type of LIBS devices are presented with their possibilities. Then the portable device developed in Dijon is described part by part with brief characteristic of developed software. The device possibilities and limits are sketched in the last section of the chapter with respect to results obtained in the testing process. The third chapter deals with capabilities of LIBS apparatus which was set up in the laboratory. The process of spectral response measurement and its results are presented and consequently used in next sections in process of plasma parameters determination. The composition of used samples are determined by using of calibration free method with aim to choose proper location in the plasma for which results are the most representative. The last chapter includes introduction to the subject of self-absorption phenomena. The simple model and basic theory are presented with suggestion how to use the phenomena in positive way. The simple experiment and its results are presented at the end of the chapter together with discussion about the possibilities and perspectives of the suggested method.

Application à la datation d'échantillons envrionnementaux / Gamma-ray characterization with Monte-Carlo calculations : Application to environmental sample measurements and dating

Degrelle, Deborah 22 March 2017 (has links)
In order to improve the determination of environmental samples activity, the detector efficiency calibration must be reliable. These studies deal with the main issues in gamma-ray spectrometry: the self-absorption and the true coincidence summing effects (TCS). These phenomena are studied by metrology and Monte-Carlo simulation (MCNP6) that imply the faithful of our detector models in relation to the experimental device. The self-absorption problem is the main one when the used standard for efficiency calibration has not the same physical and chemical characteristics than samples. A numerical calibration seems to be more suitable and we apply it for Longemer lake archives (France). A new method is proposed where an experimental measurement is processed through numerical simulations to determine the mass attenuation coefficient of the samples. It makes it possible to define a virtual chemical composition to use Monte-Carlo simulation. Then the numerical calibration at 59.54 keV gives a 24% self-absorption correction. The TCS problems can also be corrected by simulation. The ETNA software can determine this correction but it doesn’t make the well type detector model possible, with a geometry conducive to TCS effects. With the aim of correcting the efficiency of our well detector, the efficiency transfer, which can be adjusted to any device, is used. The results with this method are validated by MCNP6 and Genie 2000 software on the main lines of 214Bi.

Modeling and Design of Betavoltaic Batteries

Alam, Tariq Rizvi 06 December 2017 (has links)
The betavoltaic battery is a type of micro nuclear battery that harvests beta emitting radioactive decay energy using semiconductors. The literature results suggest that a better model is needed to design a betavoltaic battery. This dissertation creates a comprehensive model that includes all of the important factors that impact betavoltaic battery output and efficiency. Recent advancements in micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) necessitate an onboard miniaturized power source. As these devices are highly functional, longevity of the power source is also preferred. Betavoltaic batteries are a very promising power source that can fulfill these requirements. They can be miniaturized to the size of a human hair. On the other hand, miniaturization of chemical batteries is restricted by low energy density. That is why betavoltaics are a viable option as a power source for sophisticated MEMS devices. They can also be used for implantable medical devices such as pacemakers; for remote applications such as spacecraft, undersea exploration, polar regions, mountains; military equipment; for sensor networks for environmental monitoring; and for sensors embedded in bridges due to their high energy density and long lifetime (up to 100 years). A betavoltaic battery simulation model was developed using Monte Carlo particle transport codes such as MCNP and PENELOPE whereas many researchers used simple empirical equations. These particle transport codes consider the comprehensive physics theory for electron transport in materials. They are used to estimate the energy deposition and the penetration depth of beta particles in the semiconductors. A full energy spectrum was used in the model to take into account the actual radioactive decay energy of the beta particles. These results were compared to the traditional betavoltaic battery design method of estimating energy deposition and penetration depth using monoenergetic beta average energy. Significant differences in results were observed that have a major impact on betavoltaic battery design. Furthermore, the angular distribution of the beta particles was incorporated in the model in order to take into account the effect of isotropic emission of beta decay. The backscattering of beta particles and loss of energy with angular dependence were analyzed. Then, the drift-diffusion semiconductor model was applied in order to estimate the power outputs for the battery, whereas many researchers used the simple collection probability model neglecting many design parameters. The results showed that an optimum junction depth can maximize the power output. The short circuit current and open circuit voltage of the battery varied with the semiconductor junction depth, angular distribution, and different activities. However, the analysis showed that the analytical results overpredicted the experimental results when self-absorption was not considered. Therefore, the percentage of self-absorption and the source thickness were estimated using a radioisotope source model. It was then validated with the thickness calculated from the specific activity of the radioisotope. As a result, the battery model was improved significantly. Furthermore, different tritiated metal sources were analyzed and the beta fluxes were compared. The optimum source thicknesses were designed to increase the source efficiencies. Both narrow and wide band gap semiconductors for beryllium tritide were analyzed. / PHD / A betavoltaic battery is a type of micro nuclear battery that harnesses electrical energy from radioisotopes using semiconductors. It has high specific energy density and longevity but low specific power. It can be miniaturized to a micron scale size (a size of a human hair) to power micro/nano sensors or devices. They can be used in implantable biomedical devices such as pacemakers, remote areas such as high mountains, undersea, and also in embedded sensors in structures. Chemical and other types of batteries are not suitable at this scale due to their low specific energy density. A betavoltaic battery is an attractive choice in applications where reliability and long service life (up to 100 years) are required. However, their power output is very low (on the scale of microwatts) due to their low specific power. They can aid chemical batteries to increase their lifetime by designing a hybrid battery. In a hybrid battery, a betavoltaic battery can trickle charge a chemical battery to top off the depleted charge. A theoretical analysis of a battery design is useful to improve its power output and efficiency. The literature in this area suggests that a better theoretical model is required to agree well with the experimental results as well as for better design. This model comprehensively included all the important factors that impact betavoltaic battery output and efficiency. All the necessary betavoltaic battery design factors were analyzed in detail in this work in order to maximize the desired output.

Moments of Absorption

Kaufman, Sarah K. 01 January 2008 (has links)
Moments of Absorption explores the conceptual and visual themes that are presented in my MFA thesis exhibition. The research looks into the absorption of the nude subject, the gestures that communicate this absorption, and the domestic space as a stage for the presentation of these gestures. This work investigates a tension between the theatrical and the natural as represented by images.
