Module design in a changing era of Higher Education: academic identity, cognitive dissonance and institutional barriers

Binns, Carole L. January 2017 (has links)
No / This book explores the module design experiences and practices of academics employed within one UK university, and during a period of social and economic change in which university staff are designing and delivering curricula for changing student populations, with different profiles and expectations than previous generations. The book raises issues such as why, in a climate of reduced resources, staff increase their own workloads by re-writing lectures to accommodate changing student needs, and how institutional practices that are used to encourage curriculum innovation are often having a perceived opposite effect. It will appeal to academic staff, students of higher education studies, and policy-makers within the education sector.

The role of the senior management team in managing outcomes-based assessment

Saib, Mariam 30 June 2004 (has links)
Assessment is an integral component of outcomes-based education which requires a paradigm shift in assessment processes. Outcomes-based assessment is more intense than traditional assessment since it reports on many dimensions of performance. Performance is analysed in relation to outcomes and the learning demonstrated and record-keeping is more complex. This study explored the experiences of the Senior Management Team and Foundation Phase educators of a selected primary school regarding outcomes-based education, outcomes-based assessment and its management. A literature review of outcomes-based education, outcomes-based assessment and instructional leadership and an empirical study using a qualitative approach were conducted. Document analysis and semi-structured interviews with educators and school management were used for data-gathering. Findings indicated that the initial implementation of outcomes-based education was problematic, however, effective instructional leadership had improved educators' understanding and implementation of assessment. Thereafter recommendations were made for the improvement of practice. / Educational Studies / Thesis (M.Ed.)

Information Technology Project Management Team Building for Project Success

Guiney, Andrew, aguiney@smsmt.com January 2009 (has links)
More than ninety per cent of projects are run by project teams and the stronger the team the more likely the project will succeed. Team building activities are performed to both increase team performance and to enhance the likelihood of project success. For the purpose of this study, information technology (IT) business projects were chosen as IT is a major driving force in business today and there is widespread dissatisfaction with the performance of IT business projects. In analysing the causes of dissatisfaction, increasingly researchers are recognising that technology is a secondary issue behind the human side of project team management. Business projects were chosen because increasingly IT is being used in the business environment to solve problems in the post-industrial era characterised by the service industry, while the manufacturing industry, from which much of the project literature has emerged, reduces. The importance of the project team in developing IT business projects is well recognised and managers are concerned about their ability to transform an ad-hoc collection of people assigned to a particular project into a coherent, integrated project team. In most cases the activities recommended to build a successful IT business project team have been theoretically based, rather than empirically founded. The goal of this research was to investigate the team building activities used on successful projects. To achieve this goal, the research defines the key measures of project success and establishes their relative importance; determines the most important team building activities for project success with experienced project managers; enhances the understanding of implementation of team building activities on successful projects; and provides suggestions on how to increase the likelihood of project success through focusing on team building activities. The research used the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to develop a hierarchical model linking project success measures with team building activities. Confirmation of the AHP results and additional understanding of team building activities implementation was achieved by interviewing experienced project managers. The research found that customer satisfaction, although seldom used, was significantly more important as a project success measure than the three measures most often used - time, budget and scope. As identified by project managers, the most important team building activities for achieving customer satisfaction are team leadership; ensuring senior management support; staffing the team properly; planning the project with the team and empowering team members; building commitment among team members; developing strong communication channels and developing appropriate organisational interfaces. The research found successful projects focused on relationships in addition to the task focus of many project methodologies. The research findings on team building activities will enable project leaders on IT business projects to develop empowered project teams with stronger affiliations and support throughout the organisation. By empowering project teams to create effective internal and external relationships there will be fewer project failures, increased customer satisfaction and improved achievement of project success.

Andrade Arteaga, Carla Alexandra 21 March 2022 (has links)
[EN] The current worldwide competitive context makes that organization are struggling to be and become competitive. Since many years ago, customers demand high-quality products and he/she might choose from many different suppliers, which makes those enterprises must articulate the necessary mechanisms to offer such a quality level. In this sense, many organizations apply techniques of quality management, e.g., Kaizen, quality statistical control or design of experiments to mention some, to help them out reaching the required quality level. Then, it is widely accepted the existence of correlation between the application of Total Quality Management (TQM) techniques and organizational performance, understanding the latter as the improvement of the products/services that leads to higher benefits. However, even though it is possible to find many scientific works that relate the application of TQM and organizational performance improvement, relating this to a specific part of the organization such as production or innovation, the quantification of the effect of TQM on performance measurement, using a Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and, therefore, at the strategic and balanced level, is a current research topic, which is intended to be developed within this PhD Thesis. With this innovative approach, organizations would obtain additional relevant information for their decision-making processes about which the most relevant TQM techniques and tools are and should, therefore, be prioritized and improved. Besides, the application of TQM techniques directly generates some specific improvements at the tactic-operative level in organizations, and then the relationships among the TQM techniques, the organizational performance measured through a BSC, and the mentioned organizational improvements are studied and analyzed in this research. Then, a state of the art if firstly developed, analyzing relevant scientific publications, to identify the research gap. The next task is to design a six-phases methodological proposal to quantify the impact of TQM elements over organizational performance in SMEs within a BSC context, being the phases: Phase 1. Definition of the structural elements. Phase 2. Establishment of the work team. Phase 3. Selection of the elements. Phase 4. Determination of the MCDA technique. Phase 5. Application of the MCDA technique. Phase 6. Analysis of results. Then, these six phases are applied to a SME of the petroleum sector in Ecuador and the main results achieved are presented. Finally, the main conclusions are stated as well as some future research possibilities. / Andrade Arteaga, CA. (2022).
