Arabic-English Code Switching in the Egyptian Talk Show ‘Shabab Beek’

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This sociolinguistic study examines the various functions of Arabic-English code switching in the Egyptian talk show ‘Shabab Beek (literally: Young by You; communicatively: The Young Speak)’. In addition, this study investigates the syntactic categories and types of switches to English. The data consist of approximately four hours and forty-five minutes of YouTube videos of the talk show in which code switching to English occurred. The videos are collected from six episodes of the show that were aired in October 2010. The show featured three categories of speakers, show hosts, guests, and callers. The findings show that most of the switches were produced by show hosts and guests while callers produced very few switches due perhaps to the limited number of phone calls received in the selected episodes. The speakers mostly used nouns when they switched to English. Nouns are followed by adjectives and noun phrases. The most prevalent type of switches in the data is tag switches followed by intrasentential and intersentential switches, which occurred rarely. Finally, analysis revealed eight functions of code switching in the data. These are difficulty retrieving an Arabic expression, quotation, euphemism, reiteration, message qualification, academic or technical terms, association with certain domains, and objectivization. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis English 2015

The Encyclopedia Show: Community-Based Performance in Pursuit of Classroom Interdisciplinarity

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: In May 2014, The Encyclopedia Show: Chicago performed its last volume. Like all others before, the Show was a collection of performances devised by artists, musicians, poets and playwrights all performing various subtopics surrounding a central theme, taken from “an actual Encyclopedia.” The final show was Volume 56 for Chicago; the founding city ended their six year run with an amassed body of work exploring topics ranging from Wyoming to Alan Turing, Serial Killers to Vice Presidents. Perhaps more impressive than the monthly performance event in Chicago is the fact that the show has been “franchised” to organizers and performers in at least seventeen cities. Franchise agreements mandated that for at least the first year of performance, topics were to follow Chicago’s schedule, thus creating an archive of Shows around the world, each that started with Bears, moved to The Moon, onto Visible Spectrum of Color, and so on. Now that the Chicago show has ended, I wonder what will happen to the innovative format for community performance that has reached thousands of audience members and inspired hundreds of individual performances across the globe in a six-year period. This project, like much of my own work, has two aims: first, to provide the first substantive history of The Encyclopedia Show for archival purposes; and second, to explore whether this format can be used to achieve the goals of “interdisciplinarity” in the classroom. In an effort to honor my own interests in multiple academic disciplines and in an attempt to capture the structural and performative “feel” of an Encyclopedia Show, this dissertation takes the shape of an actual Encyclopedia Show. The overarching topic of this “show” is: Michelle Hill: The Doctoral Process. In an actual Encyclopedia Show, subtopics would work to explore multiple perspectives and narratives encompassed by the central topic. As such, my “subtopics” are devoted to the roles I have played throughout my doctoral process: historian, academic, teacher. A fourth role, performer, works to transition between the sections and further create the feel of a “breakage” from a more traditional dissertation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Theatre 2017

Federal Strategy and development of a sport show : the example of ice hockey in France : socio-history of a failure?

Delorme, Nicolas 20 May 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses – at the national level – on the transformations of ice hockey from 1986 (attribution of Winter Olympic Games to France) to 2006 (separation between ice hockey and FFSG). This is a socio-historical work which focus on federal structures and their transformations, and the evolution of the Commission Nationale de Hockey sur Glace (CNHG), especially with regards to the implementation of the professionalisation of this sport in the last twenty years. The analysis, in addition of the overall strategy, must include the actors' strategies within the federal space (CNHG and FFSG) and their power relationships, the ideological underpinnigs of theirs actions, but also take into account the national sports context with the development of sports shows and star-system during the 1980s. It will also analyse the professional structuration of ice hockey: professional league, status of clubs, labor unions (players, clubs, referees), management control and its international position with the consequences of the Bosman case (1995) and the Malaja case (2002).

On the verge of completing 100 years in 2010, Pentecostalism in Brazil turns out to be a complex, multifaceted, phenomenon, which challenges communication, media entrepreneurs, sociologists, preachers, believers, atheists and social communication reserachers, once nowadays new religious experiences are moved by the adoption of the mediatic culture. There are now widely shown experiences on broadcasts such as Show da Fé (The show of faith) hosted by R. R. Soares, the leader of Igreja Internacional da Graça de Deus (International Church of the Grace of God), which is the religious institution being this study's main topic. Having in mind the belief that social phenomenons are not uniform and also being aware that it is not possible to believe that the religious products are free from contradiction, the research opted to look for understanding the religious mediatic visibility through the thread of social relationships of those who adopt The show of faith. It means the research analyses the religious communication form a different angle, distinct from the linear view of message transmission, understanding that sort of communication as the process mediated by cultural and social practices which are built everyday, where the constitution of subjectivity is a way of analyzing the ways through which the individuals interact with the message. Thus, the research- a study on reception following the research line of the socio-cultural meditiation - allowed, among other aspects, to notice in the uses and habits of television consumerism the dialect named by Martin-Barbero as wish/place of social differentiation and ritual process objectification consumerism, evidencing that the group of belonging exerts influence for the re-seignification of the follower's wish. It was possible to identify that the key for the broadcast genre of Show da Fé (The show of faith) is the power... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Reality-show : a tv na era da globalização /

Bacchin, Rodrigo Boldrin. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This dissertation intents to analyze the Big Brother - a TV show usually presented as the most important among the reality-shows - as a typical product of the culture industry in the globalization age. Idealized by the dutch producer Endemol, it was the first program in the world to be simultaneously presented in broadcast TV, cable TV (pay-per-view) and Internet. It quickly became a global phenomenon and, until today, it has been broadcast in 70 different countries. It's main characteristic is to be a interactive TV show, produced to be consumed in different medias. Therefore, this research intends to comprehend the configuration of the culture industry as a result of the new possibities brought by the globalization process. Consequently, it proposes an evaluation of the validity of this concept in the globalized world, after indicating some of the main characteristic of globalization. Considering that it is a TV show, it was performed a critical analysis about television, intending to demonstrate the falsehood of the thesis that it is a neutral, exempt and without consequences mass media. Besides, through the possibilities brought by the globalization process, this dissertation indicates the main characteristic of television in the globalization age, emphasizing the convergence between television and Internet. Finally, it demonstrates the specificity of the relation between the reality-shows and the globalization, especially the Big Brother. Yet, it emphasizes the proximity involving the producer Endemol with the globalization dinamics, which appears as an important player to comprehend the research object. In conclusion, it discusses important issues brought up by the reality-shows and, specially, by the Big Brother, both related with the proximity of these TV shows with the globalized stage of capitalism. / Orientador: Raul Fiker / Coorientador: Renato Bueno Franco / Banca: José Pedro Antunes / Banca: Luiz Antonio Calmon Nabuco Lastória / Mestre

Reterritorializando a educação escolar indígena : reflexões acerca dos territórios etnoeducacionais

Sousa, Fernanda Brabo January 2013 (has links)
The creation of political-legal category etnoeducacional territory, through Presidential Decree No. 6.861/2009, opens a new chapter in the history of indigenous education in Brazil, with regard to the recognition and affirmation of ethnic identity of indigenous peoples and the possibility of a more autonomous school of their educational processes. This means, roughly, that the indigenous education shall be organized in accordance to the territoriality of their people, regardless of territorial division between states and municipalities that make up the Brazilian state. Given the recent nature of the document and the scarcity of studies on the construction of this policy, this paper proposes some reflections on the creation, implementation and negotiation of territories etnoeducacionais. Some of the means used to do so were the creation of a metaphor, called "ant territory," thought from viewing the work "Our North is the South," Yukinori Yanagi of exposed in the 8th Mercosul Biennial. Another device was aware that the show rather than seek answers, invites you to discover and think collectively about meanings that notions of territory and territoriality to assume that policy, linking them to the notions of identity and ethnic affirmation, combined with the bias educational. For this, we studied legal documents relating to indigenous issues etnoterritorial, crisscrossing your senses with the proposed meanings from conversations with three indigenous intellectuals and a longtime active on indigenous issues. Using the methods of description of Michel Maffesoli, as well as the lightness of the narrative of Italo Calvino and ethnic awareness described by José Bengoa, this study was guiding questions the relevance of Decree No. 6.861/2009 for indigenous education specific and differentiated and the possible meanings it assumes in the history of indigenous education in Brazil. We see how possible meanings greater social control over indigenous education, the functioning of the system of collaboration between the different spheres of government and ethno-cultural appreciation of indigenous identities, among many other more or less implicit in the speeches of government, intellectuals and indigenous raising new questions from the reflections in this study and, perhaps, also announcing a reterritorialization of indigenous education.

Subjektivní posuzování vlivu konzumace televizních pořadů typu "reality show" na prožívání a chování se zřetelem na zdravotně sociální hledisko / Subjective Assesment of the Influence of Watching TV-programmes such as "reality show" on Experience and Behaviour Having Regard to Health and Social Perspective

KRÓLOVÁ, Veronika January 2007 (has links)
My dissertation is focused on the issue of reality shows. In the theoretical section of the paper I first address mass media and mass communication, because they are crucial elements in the process of transmisioning information to viewers or listeners. Reality shows would never reach the audience without public brnadcasting. I analyze reality shows as a whole and finally I marginally consider psychology of personality, which is closely tied with this work. In the research part, questions that derive judgmenet from hypothesis are described. I used the quantitative sociologic analysis and questionnaire as a process of collecting information for my research.
