Migration, development and social change in a 21st century North Indian hill village

Daehnhardt, Madleina January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation analyses movements from and to a contemporary 21st century Indian multi-caste village in the Kumaun Himalayas, where movements have traditionally involved transhumance and border trade with western Tibet. With the closure of the Indo-Tibetan borders after the Indo-China war in 1962, the economy and livelihoods of the people of the region have fundamentally changed and movements now take place in the form of migration for work to the plains of India, both in the private sector and in government services. The dissertation is based on an ethnographic village study and explores all contemporary forms of movement visible in the village: out-migration; return-migration; and in-migration. It examines how these different types of movement tie in with the changing socio-economic lives of the villagers. This explorative study focuses on the patterns, causes and effects of migration on rural lives past and present, and on the multiple interrelated social changes, which are part of these migratory processes. The author uses mixed qualitative-quantitative methods, including a census survey of all 148 households, 45 semi-structured interviews, follow-up in-depth interviews, and innovative methods such as arts-based visual methods. The framework applied is interdisciplinary and multi-theoretical and contributes to the existing empirical body of literature on migration, development and change. The author chooses to employ the framework of the rural left behind when examining the lives of the wives and elderly parents of migrants. However, she argues that those in the village who are in the truest sense ‘left behind’ are not the family members of migrants, but the unemployed men who lack the capabilities to migrate for work and who reside in the village without any gainful economic activity. The thesis structure includes eight chapters in addition to the introduction and conclusion. Chapter 1 reviews the relevant literature on migration and development and is followed by the methodology chapter (chapter 2), a village background chapter (chapter 3) and a chapter covering the historical context (chapter 4). The structure of the main analysis (chapters 5-8) is along the lines of patterns and reasons for out-migration (chapter 6), out-migration types and their impact (chapter 6), return migration types, reasons and impact (chapter 7) and in-migration types, reasons and impact (chapter 8). Each analysis chapter ends with brief conclusions; these are expanded in the final conclusions (chapter 9).

Wittizorecki, Elisandro Schultz January 2009 (has links)
This thesis deals with understanding the relationships between the social changes and their impacts in Physical Education teachers at schools. This work represents the amplification of my Master Final Paper, which was finished in 2001 and whose subject was the construction of Physical Education instructors’ teaching work from municipal teaching system in Porto Alegre. In that occasion, an ethnographical research with teachers from this kind of teaching was made, trying to understand on its perspective how they built their teaching work and how they dealt with their actions, facing the singularities of the pedagogical administrative political project of the municipal public schools. The arising of new demand for teaching work and the need for identifying in the teachers’ formative process the importance of personal and professional trajectories made me formulate the following researching point, considering the Physical Education teachers’ perspective: what are the social changes that influence their teaching practice at school and how do they experience these changes, answering and facing the school community’s educational, cultural and social demands, for which they are working? In order to answer theses questions, considering my methodological procedure, I analyzed six Physical Education teachers’ life histories. I tried to build with theses professionals the understandings and relationships between their professional and personal trajectories and the process of social changes in that we have been living, that is: the new familiar configurations, the position of the work in the contemporary world, the cultural globalization effects in people’s attitudes and relationship in their life experience and the pedagogical restructure occurred in municipal teaching system in Porto Alegre. The field research was fulfilled from May 2008 to February 2009 and the following conclusions were possible to be reached after the analysis of the information: the roles that were plaid by new familiar configurations are a common element in the teachers’ reports and these roles impute new meanings in their practice. It’s also important to point out how perplexed the teachers describe and face the “different worlds” presented in the school routine, they refer to uncountable possibilities that students express their origins, experiences, wishes and socialization.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze how the student views the school, and its instructors in a fast paced society that is constantly transforming. It is now common to find intellectuals from many fields of study questioning aspects of modern society. It can be said that the following thesis is joining this recent critical evaluation of modern society. Specifically, this thesis will evaluate one of the most important institutions of this society, education. The goal of this thesis is to reflect on how the school, contents, methodologies, and interpersonal relationships act when confronted with post modernism. The objective of this study is also to consider the interconnection of educational theory and practice in the light of contemporary social changes; and to analyze the school, its contents, methodologies, and interpersonal relationships in order to understand where the paradigmatic aspects of post-modernity society can interfere with the student s behavior, and how the ill-behavior can be related to the uneducated instructors confronted with post-modern thought. The primary case study was a secondary public school which was analyzed in multiple dimensions; in actions, practices, and speeches of different members of the school with a focus on how current students view the instructors. Further support is supplied by a theoretic chart composed of studies and reflections of different authors that discuss the current educational changes facing our society.

The connected society : contribution to the sociological analyses between technology and society throught the example of the digital media tools

Huguet, Thibault 20 February 2017 (has links)
Initiated for several decades, the development of the digital technology mark by its deep stamp the minds and the body of our contemporary society. More than a simple social phenomenon, it seems to be generaly agreed that we assist today at a true « anthropological mutation ». Nevertheless, while the analyses of the links between technology and society have been characterized for a long time by some deterministic prospects, we propose to explore in this thesis the dynamic relations which make that a technic is eminently social, and that a society is intrinsically technic. Adhering to a comprehensive approach, this research seeks to highlight the significations and the meaning systems related to the use of digital media tools, at a macro-social and a micro-social scale, to explain causally the importance we ascribed to this specific category of objects. The dynamics at work, both at an individual or collective level, are examinated in a socio-logical way, alternately with an historical, philosophical, economical, political, or socio-cultural point of view. As artefacts-symbols of our present day societies – total social object –, the digital media are the tools upon which we organize the contemporaneity of our relationship with the world : we regard them as a sociological prism from which it possible to grasp the connected society.

Vztah individualismu a narcismu / Relationship between individualism and narcissism

Bartoš, František January 2011 (has links)
The dissertation thesis focuses on the topic of individualism and non-clinical narcissism. The issue is seen first in the broad context of social sciences and also the results of empirical researches published hitherto are summarized in the first part. Subsequently, based on three questionnaire surveys (two of them have representative character), is researched the incidence of individualism and non-clinical narcissism in the Czech population as well as the interaction between these two phenomena. For the purposes of measuring of their incidence we adopted the scale of individualism and collectivism (INDCOL) and constructed our own valid instrument for measuring non-clinical narcissism. In the text there is also described the process of construction and application of these two instruments. The thesis pursues also wider consequences of non-clinical narcissism, emphasizing one's self-conception, sexual life, partner and other interpersonal relationships, professional life and occurrence of social-pathological behaviour.

Vuxna patienters upplevelse av att leva med komplikationer efter stroke : En litteraturöversikt / Adult patients' experience of living with complications after stroke : A literature review

Al Swiesh, Hamza January 2024 (has links)
Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death globally among cardiovascular diseases, occurring when the blood flow to the brain is abruptly interrupted either by a blood clot or a hemorrhage, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation in the brain and potentially leading to the loss of motor and cognitive functions. These complications can significantly affect patients' quality of life and require careful and comprehensive care and rehabilitation to manage them effectively. Aim: The aim was to describe the experiences of adult patients living with complications after a stroke. Method: A general literature review was used according to Friberg to examine and categorize eleven qualitative scientific articles. Results: The results show three main themes - experience of physical changes, emotional changes, and social changes - with eight subthemes describing various aspects of stroke survivors’ experiences. Conclusion: Stroke survivors face a complex journey characterized by physical, emotional, and social challenges after stroke, emphasizing the need for adequate support and interventions to facilitate their rehabilitation process.

Obraz změn společenských hodnot v egyptských televizních seriálech / The Reflection of Changing Social Values in the Egyptian TV Series

Černá, Barbora January 2011 (has links)
The TV series represent a specific phenomenon in Egypt and other Arab countries. Albeit generally regarded as an uninteresting part of popular culture rather than a sort of art, the TV dramas should be seriously taken into consideration by all of social, history, and art scientists. Firstly, because of the extreme popularity among the large majority of the Egyptians, the series are often used by authorities for spreading certain ideological and political messages. The questions of national unity and the rise of militant Islam were chosen as examples to prove this in the thesis. Secondly, the Egyptian TV series reflect the social changes in Egyptian society and promote modernisation. This is shown in the thesis on the cases of marriage and the woman status. The production of TV series in Egypt is enormous and watching them is very widespread. Therefore, the TV dramas represent a powerful means to influence Egyptian society. Keywords: TV series, television, Egypt, popular culture, film, television drama, Egyptian society, social changes, satellite broadcasting, media.

A window on Palermo between the 9th and the first half of the 12th century : study on the pottery coming from two archaeological excavations conduced in the Kalsa district

Sacco, Viva 01 July 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with a series of thematic related to the production and circulation of pottery in Palermo during the 9th-12th centuries. In particular this research focuses on the unpublished ceramics found during the archaeological excavations in “Santa Maria degli Angeli” Church, known as “Gancia”, and in the Bonagia palace, both situated along the Alloro street in the Kalsa area, where during the Fatimid period rose up the palatine city called al-Ḫāliṣa (937). The main aim of this project is to offer a more systematic and larger picture of the pottery productions circulating in Palermo between the 9th and the first half of 12th century, facing the methodological problems set by their study and proposing new chrono-typologies. The interpretation of these data has allowed us to use the ceramics as an historical source, able to offer partial but new information related to the topographic evolution of the city of Palermo, to the social changes and to the commercial dynamics it went through.
