Organized Humanism in Canada and the Netherlands: A Socio-Historical Comparison

McTaggart, John Mitchell 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis compares organized humanist organizations in Canada and the Netherlands. Using a grounded theoretical approach, three fundamental research questions are addressed: (1) Why has organized humanism been much more successful in the Netherlands than in Canada?; (2) Why is Dutch humanism informed by an inclusive ideological orientation, while Canadian humanism is militantly anti-religious?; and (3) Is there a relationship between success and ideological orientation? Using a number of socio-historical and internal-organizational factors, the study suggests that the success of the Dutch movement is, in part, indebted to the long humanist tradition in the Netherlands stretching back to the sixteenth century. Secondly, the pillarization of Dutch society along ideological lines during the late nineteenth century influenced the development of a distinct humanist pillar following the end of the Second World War. Along with the confessional pillars, humanists in the Netherlands were able to secure financial assistance from the state, encouraging an inclusive, non-confrontational ideological foundation for Dutch humanism. In comparison, Canada lacks a strong irreligious tradition and maintains a fair degree of neutrality between church and state. As a result, Canadian humanists have not received any form of subsidization from the state. Organized humanism in Canada was heavily influenced by the militantly anticlerical British rationalist movement and developed largely around Dr. Henry Morgentaler's controversial fight for abortion rights during the late 1960s. As a consequence, Canadian humanism is anti-religious in its orientation. By developing humanism into a practical alternative to the church, Dutch humanists have enjoyed greater success than their Canadian counterparts. However, given the tremendous decrease in religious affiliation in both Canada and the Netherlands during recent decades, the comparatively small numbers joining the ranks of organized humanist movements suggests that this non-theistic worldview does not serve as an attractive alternative to traditional religious expressions. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

As theoretical and methodological base was used the Psychology Socio-Historic Method, that understands the process of subjectification as impossible of being disentailed of the social processes, in a way that the subject who constitutes the society is also constituted by it. A qualitative study has been conducted for the deepening of the theme which theoretical framework, for the construction of the methodological approach, was based on the theory of socio-historical Vygotsky (2004) and in Minayo, Souza and Santos (2005), that aided in the process of organization of the greeting phases, systematization and analysis of the information. The methodological procedures used were: desk research and structured interviews with individual women - subjects in the research. It retrieves the first issues of gender violence in Brazil, presents data from the Special Police Departments for Assistance to Women on the violence of women in the city of Goiânia, and the different routes of marital violence experienced by women, participants in this research. The violence in this study is understood as a relationship aspect inside a wider meaning, considering the more diverse facets and senses in agreement with the subjectivity and social context of each one of these women in marital violence situation. It was possible to conclude by the women`s report, that the staying in a situation of conjugal violence acquires particular contours and a private sense, justified by different aspects, as the affective feeling, the need of preserving the family unit and the condition of social vulnerability marked by financial dependence.

Concreteness of socio-historical discourses and practices, during babies' attendance at a day care center.

Amorim, Katia de Souza 05 June 2002 (has links)
This thesis is part of a wide research investigation, which is constructing the Network of Meanings theoretical-methodological perspective, with the aim to understand and investigate human development processes. Such perspective presupposes development as occurring in context, that is, through person – environment relationship. Within this last topic it is included the socio-historical matrix, conceived as composed by political, economical, cultural, social and historical elements, and as having a semiotic nature. Thus, considering the materiality of the sign, it is inferred that the socio-historical matrix has concreteness in the here-and-now situations. Based on this, a goal was defined to the present study: investigate the way by which the socio-historical matrix materialization occurs, through the analysis of the babies' attendance at daycare center. Empirical data is related to seven cases selected from the research project “Babies’ adaptation processes at a daycare center", which has followed processes of 21 babies, their families and caregivers after the babies’ admission to a university daycare. Corpus was organized through interviews (mothers, caregivers and technicians) and videotape scenes (three first months of the babies’ attendance), constructing a history of each of the seven episodes. Microgenetic analysis was done, searching for the identification and apprehension of the sign materiality of the socio-historical matrix, in different moments of the processes. Due to a very wide set of data obtained, the discussion was restricted to those elements related to the family characteristics, the situation of the daycare attendance per se, the way relationships were established and the way adults has dealt with the babies’ illness episodes. Analysis revealed that concreteness of the socio-historical matrix occurs through very different forms, as at the institutions level (family and day care), through its structure, its main goals, its social and spatial organization, the kind of relationship established within it, etc. Socio-historical matrix materiality was also identified through the concreteness of the social roles with the social-historical meanings they bring to the here-and-now. Besides, through the role coordination, which incarnates roles’ forms proper to that culture or social group. It was also identified that the socio-historical matrix concreteness occurs through discourses and practices by which adults take daily care of the babies and, specifically, in the event of illness episodes. Yet that, for each of those socio-historical matrix aspects, there is a multiplicity of voices derived from different historical times and social processes. These voices can reveal themselves as conflictive, as they entail diverse conceptions, emotions and practices, leading to ambiguity and even personal and social confrontations. All of those are negotiated in the situations, being accepted, rejected or modified by the persons within the relations in the situation. Articulations between such discourses are done in the here-and-now, through dialogical processes, some of which can lead to transformations and construction of new discourses.

Franciscatto, Roberto January 2017 (has links)
The process of inclusion of people with disabilities in the labor market has become a widely diffused theme of great social relevance, much to the affirmative action policies for inclusion established in the country, resulting from the struggles of groups of people with disabilities to have their education, health and work rights recognized and contemplated. The result of this process has shown that such actions in this context have led to the improvement of living conditions and human and social development of people with disabilities. In this scenario, information and communication technologies, represented in this work through a Virtual Library of Assistive Solutions, appear as elements of education and constitute a fundamental role in the process of mediation of human action, considering a socio-historical perspective. Based on this premise, the objective of this work is to analyze how we can organize assistive solutions from different sources, so that they can be used in the process of inclusion of people with disabilities in the technical/professional labor market. From then on, we realized the need to propose the development of a web system (virtual library) that could manage assistive solutions in an organized way, and that these contribute with practices that worked well in the labor market environment for people of some type of disability. It is understood that the sharing of practices and actions developed will allow innumerable benefits for institutions, companies and individuals that search for such information, being structured in an organized, centralized and freely accessible manner. Thus, a virtual library of assistive solutions was designed and developed, providing, among other things, usability, accessibility and responsiveness resources, following the main web standards present in the development and validation process. As far as the methodology present in this work, it contemplates a qualitative-quantitative study being the use of "case studies" its main method. The research was complemented with a technological approach due to the development of the virtual library of assistive solutions in question. As for the subjects present in this research, three main contexts were the focus of this research: the educational context (made up of people with a function/position of educational management, such as: course coordinators, Accessibility centers, among others); The labor context (made up of professionals who work in the labor market and perform management/hiring activities, for example: managers of companies, human resources analysts, among others); And finally people with special needs, so that they could collaborate and provide their contribution to the exposed prototype. As results of this work, are the process of technological development employed in the construction of a virtual library and its accessible resources; The validations of usability, accessibility and responsiveness present in this research; and the analysis of the profile of the subjects, their contributions and perspectives regarding the use of a technological tool for management of assistive solutions in their day to day life.

O desafio da masculinidade subalterna na travestilidade: a dor da beleza / The challenge of the transvestility in subaltern masculinity: the pain of beauty

It is a theoretical study, a literature review. Therefore, the construction of this work involved two steps: the first step was the literature review on the subject concerning the period of the last twelve years from the key descriptors found in online data basis (Web of Science, LILACS, MedLine, Bireme Portal.periodicos.Capes, PubMed, Scielo Brazil), and the second step was the participation of the researcher in events, on visits to institutions and in dialogues with experts in the field of transvestility. The research was guided by the theoretical framework of socio-historical Psychology. This perspective believes that the way we assume ourselves is related to our subjectivity, which is historically constructed by the subject in its historical, social and emotional relations, being the human psyche a flexible and malleable category, involving the dimensions of consciousness, activity and identity in which the phenomena of transvestility is understood. It is noticed that transvestility expresses a social and individual subjectivity that is constructed in a dialectical relationship, and that shows the complexity of historical, social, family and personal experiences. It expresses both a transformation of a genetically male body and the transformation of a gender identity opposite to the biological sex, which subverts the gender through sophisticated programming techniques such as hormone therapy, implantation of silicone and use of female clothing and accessories. It concludes that the transformation of the body in transvestility into a feminine image is perceived as a second skin which shows all its performance according to the beauty standards of hegemonic idealized feminine gender identity. The process of constitution of subjectivity is expressed by strangeness and by the complexity of changes in relation to the genetic body, by the construction of a gender identity according to the chosen gender, and consequently by using clothes and expressions of the body, consistent with this gender identity. This means that the constitution of subjectivity in transvestility cannot be described by an anatomical detail, but by a set of experiences that turn the transvestites into beings in a changing process, ranging from the destruction to the construction of a new body, with the challenges of the pain of beauty that is marked by moments and motivations of an individual socio-historical role, and that specifies the challenges in the constant transformation of the body, since the truth of gender is not written in the biological body, but in the many ways of constructing new meanings for genders / O presente trabalho pretende discutir a constituição da subjetividade na travestilidade a partir da subversão do corpo, adequando-o a identidade de gênero.

Considering the existence of many specificities between these once the first round is for the investigation of the social formation of the mind and the second is specific dialogue as collective phenomenon, the place given to the language in such reflections enables us to bring them, without But erasing its natural elaborations. To think the redefinitions for which the course of pedagogy has been determined through history, we use the following documents: a) No LDB 9.394/96 b) Pareceres: CNE / CP n. 5/2005 (define National Curriculum Guidelines for the Graduate Course in education, degree), n. 3 2006) Resolution CNE / CP n. 01, from May 15, 2006, establishing the guidelines mentioned, and to change the course of pedagogy / EDU / UCG looked up the Projeto Pedagógico PP / EDU / UCG - March 2005. It was concluded that the language as trainer of consciences should be the basis for all academic discussion, especially in training courses for teachers, such as the course of pedagogy, which prepares professionals to work with children.

Les "troubles du comportement et de la conduite" : histoire d'une appropriation médico-administrative et usage contemporain (de 1914 à nos jours) / “Behaviour and Conduct Disorders” : a history of medico-administrative appropriation and contemporary usage (from 1914 up to the present day)

Cargnelli, Sandro 24 June 2019 (has links)
In the field of child psychopathology, a set of diverse behaviors, like disobedience, theft, lying, and verbal and physical aggression, are grouped under the label “Behaviour and Conduct Disorders”. The question of the origins of the category used to name certain types of transgressions raised questions. The following thesis suggests to follow this nosographic term in its scholarly singularity, its sedimentations, its historical temporality and its inscription in a discursive regime. That is why, the work of Georges Heuyer, a pioneering figure in the structuration of the Child and Young Psychiatry field, occupies a significant position in this thesis. Then, it is in this investigation to seize, as close as possible, the name chain starting from the school, going through MDPH and ending at ITEP. Our interest was focused on the medico-administrative assessment process within multidisciplinary teams at the MDPH. Finally, the conducted analysis highlights the way the classification “behavior and conduct disorders” reverberated on the representations of the designated people.

Reconceptualizing music education and introducing the timeline integration model: an interdisciplinary approach using socio-historical contexts

Haywood, Abby C. 01 May 2014 (has links)
Since the early part of the 1800s many aspects of music education have remained "very traditional" with little changes in underpinning rationales (Jorgensen, 2003, p. 3). Due to this lack of change, a divide exists "between musical ideology and education practice" (p. 4). The primary purpose of this thesis is to suggest that changing the music education profession begins with reconceptualizing music education. The secondary purpose is to propose one solution, the Timeline Integration Model. Reconceptualization is the process of challenging the atheoretical and ahistorical perspectives of traditional curricula (Pinar, 1975). Rethinking curriculum research starts at the intersections of social structure, history, and biography (Popkewitz, 1988). This philosophical qualitative research thesis presents an analysis of the social structure of School of Music programs. It uses the symbolic interaction theory to investigate how language and music-for-music's-sake ideology influence the music education profession. It briefly examines the history of music education and provides a review of literature of symbolic interaction theory and reconceptualization in relation to music education. The symbolic interaction theory is also applied to an autobiography to further investigate the social structure of School of Music programs and the music education profession. The autobiography demonstrates how social structure, history, and biography are interconnected. This thesis introduces the Timeline Integration Model. The Timeline Integration Model is an interdisciplinary approach developed by the author that uses socio-historical contexts to rethink musical learning. The Timeline Integration Model also provides teachers with tools to design meaningful and integrative lessons in K-12 general music classrooms.
