'Giving honour to the Spirit' : a critical analysis and evaluation of the doctrine of pneumatological union in the Trinitarian theology of Jonathan Edwards in dialogue with Karl BarthHastings, W. Ross January 2004 (has links)
The extent to which the 'honour' of the Spirit influenced the theology of Jonathan Edwards is a hitherto underdeveloped theme. Against a backdrop of Patristic thought and in dialogue with the theology of Karl Barth, evaluation is made of pneumatological union in Edwards' Trinitarian theology as this centres on the nature and inter-relatedness of the 'three unions' that characterize his theology: the union of the three Persons of the Trinity, the union of the saints with God, and the union of the divine and human natures of Christ. Edwards' seeks to honour the Spirit as the mutual love of the Father for the Son within his Augustinian, Lockean model of the immanent Trinity, and as 'Person' in the economy. The challenges of doing so within the limits of this psychological model of the Trinity are evaluated in dialogue with the Cappadocian Fathers and Barth. In a manner patterned after union in the Trinity, Edwards gave prominence to the concept of the pneumatological union of the saints with God in Christ, in fulfilment of the self-glorifying purpose of God in creation and redemption. Edwards' experiential theology of conversion, and his elevation of subjective sanctification by the Spirit over objective justification in Christ, for assurance, is contrasted with Barth's greater emphases on the Christological union of God with humanity and objective justification in Christ. Barth's more contemplative approach is contrasted with the overly introspective spirituality of Edwards. Edwards' view of the role of the Spirit in the hypostatic union of God with humanity in Christ, which is reflective of the other unions, is also evaluated in light of Patristic, Reformed-Puritan and Barthian thought on the nature of the humanity Christ assumed, and the doctrine of the vicarious humanity of Christ. A more emphatic incarnational emphasis may have saved Edwards' Spirit- honouring spirituality from an anthropocentricity which is ironical given that the glory of God is his ontic doxological concern.

Holy Spirit and church in First Corinthians : the role of the Holy Spirit in creating unity with special reference to 1 Cor. 12-14Shumilin, Alexander 11 1900 (has links)
The main goal of this study is to demonstrate the role of the Holy Spirit in building up Church unity, based on the exegesis of I Corinthians. The current theme is urgent; however, little attention has been paid to it in research literature.
We have noted that it is not human wisdom but the Holy Spirit who is the key to our faith, salvation, and understanding of divine mysteries. The Holy Spirit along with Christ brings forward the building of the Church and guides it. One Spirit is the foundation for Church unity. The Holy Spirit administers spiritual gifts according to His will and establishes their orderly operation. Seeking the guidance of the Spirit,
trusting and obeying Him brings unity, whereas following different authorities, mistrusting and disobeying Him results in disunity. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M. Th. (New Testament)

The Trinity and the Christian life : issues of integration and orientationHartwig, Paul Bruce 97 1900 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to relate the Scriptural revelation of God's
nature to the normal Christian life. It analyses the experiential factors
that originally gave rise to a triune awareness of God, arguing that a
contemporary recovery of those seminal events is requisite for an
integration of the trinity into the Christian life. After a theological
summation of the biblical revelation, the thesis then explores the nature
of the orientation of the trinity within the Christian life. This orientation
is brought about by observing the harmonious arrangement of the
different Persons within the Godhead. Once this is done we can then
ensure that this arrangement finds an echo and corresponding imprint
within the Christian life. As the Christian consistently integrates that
tripartite relationship into the Christian life, the doctrine of the trinity
will be a continual source of sustenance and direction for life and
godliness. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / Th. M. (Systematic Theology)

UM SISTEMA ESPECIALISTA PROBABILÍSTICO DE AVALIAÇÃO DE SUCESSO NA ABERTURA DE NOVOS NEGÓCIOS / A PROBABILITISC EXPERT SYSTEM OF SUCCESS ASSESSMENT IN NEW BUSINESS OPENINGBrotto, Osvaldo César 23 September 2009 (has links)
Brazil is among the most entrepreneurial countries in the world, but the mortality rates of the small companies are high. With very fierce competition levels among the companies it is necessary for the entrepreneurs to know their competences and possibilities to set up with
success. In the ambience of small businesses the owners and the companies are closely linked, making it impossible to evaluate the causes of successes or insuccesses of the business without diving into the entrepreneur s personal life. These small companies differ from great corporations with shareholders and executives because these roles are played by the same person. To have an appropriate profile it is necessary to know them in aspects such as: personal organization, networking, financial availability, academic degree, field knowledge, previous experiences, motivation, health and time available, among other variables defined by
experts as important for the success of the business. Using Shell Spirit enabled to quantify variables, establish rules and develop a probabilistic expert system of success assessment in new business opening. The results that represent the tendency of success of the future
business analyzed were segmented in scales ranging from to 98% in average. The tool is flexible and allows the individual assessment of the entrepreneur and each individual impacts of helps them to make decisions in the business plan elaboration.

A folia do Divino: experiência e devoção em São Luís do Paraitinga e Lagoinha / The folia do Divino: experience and devotion in São Luís do Paraitinga and LagoinhaAdriana de Oliveira Silva 10 November 2009 (has links)
In this etnography, the Holy Spirit devotion is approched by a less explored trail. Instead of staying fixed in the center of the festival in honour of the Holy Spirit, the researcher goes into journey with the \"bandeira\" and the singers of the \"folia do Divino\" in their begging peregrination house to house in urban and rural areas. The anthropology of experience is elected as the composition principle for a theoretical journey in which the experience of the devotees and that of the Holy Spirit are the most important aspects to be discussed.

A Descriptive Study of a Native African Mental Health Problem Known in Zimbabwe as zvirwere zvechivanhuMungadze, Jerry Jesphat 08 1900 (has links)
This is a study conducted in Zimbabwe which compared a group of 50 zvirvere zvechivanhu patients and a group of 50 non-patients in age, sex, marital status, level of education and claims of spirit possession. Claims of spirit possessions and types of spirits, as pointed out by Bennel (1982), were used as symptoms of zvirwere zvechivanhu. The two groups were also compared in symptom dimensions of the SCL-90-R used in the study. The SCL-90-R, developed by Derogatis (1975), is a 90-item symptom check list used to screen people for psychological problems reflected in the nine symptom dimensions of somatization, obsessive/ compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism and in the three global scores of Global Severity Index, Positive Symptom Distress Index and Positive Symptom Total. The subjects were chosen from two different sites, using a systematic sampling method. Three statistical methods were used to analyze the data. The Chi-square was used to analyze data on descriptive variables. The T-test and 2 x 2 analysis of variance were used to analyze the data on symptom dimensions and global scores. The study had one main hypothesis and nine subhypotheses. The main hypothesis was that zvirwere zvechivanhu patients were significantly different from the non-patients on the overall global scores. The nine subhypotheses stated that the patient and non-patient groups were significantly different in the nine separate symptom dimensions. The study concluded that the zvirwere zvechivanhu patients were significantly different from the non-patients in the overall global scores. In the nine separate symptom dimensions, it was concluded that the two groups were the same in all except the somatization and obsessive/compulsive system dimensions.

This thesis examines the evolution of the concept of mind in the human lineage, in comparison with the development of this concept in children, to determine when humans would have started to think of others and of themselves as a spirit in a body. A review of the literature on the concept throughout history has made it possible to define it as a cognitive tool enabling intentional agents to have an influence on matter. Given this definition, the concept of mind is therefore a precursor to the sense of agency and the cognitive ability to attribute mind to others, also known as Theory of Mind (ToM). It is proposed that agency and ToM evolve in three stages along the Homo line, like what is seen in children: 1) awareness of self and others, 2) joint attention, and 3) the presence of complex social emotions such as compassion. A systematic review was then carried out with the aim of selecting, without bias, archaeological data invalidating or confirming this hypothesis. The review was based on the average annual impact of the articles (number of citations) and used combinations of keywords related to the likely manifestations of the concept of mind, agency, and ToM during prehistory. The results of the analysis suggest that: 1) Agency and ToM1 (awareness of self and others) existed at least since Homo habilis, but probably since the common ancestor to Pan and Homo; 2) ToM2 (joint attention) was present at least in Homo erectus/ergaster, but probably since the common ancestor between Pan and Homo, if we assume that the three stages evolved consecutively as observed in children; and 3) the ToM3 (compex social emotions) was present at least since Homo erectus/ergaster but probably already in the common ancestor of Pan and Homo. Finally, we can also suggest that: 4) the volume of the neocortex seems to have increased in parallel with the mastery and development of agency and ToE, and this being the case since at least the beginning of the Homo lineage. The role of the mind in social complexity and the reasons for its evolution are explored further in the conclusion.

Interrelationship between imagination and the work of the Holy Spirit in prophetic preaching: a homiletic study / Shin Myung KangKang, Shin Myung January 2015 (has links)
In the vigorous discourse of prophetic preaching in contemporary homiletic fields, especially Brueggemann’s prophetic preaching has strongly influenced preachers, as well as scholars. His work manifests the counteraction between two imaginations – the dominant and alternative imaginations - in the assurance of the transforming and liberating power of the scripture itself, through the conceptualization of imagination and the work of the Holy Spirit.
In this context, this study is positioned in the homiletic field of the reformed tradition. In a large sense, it attempts to investigate prophetic preaching in an empirical and interpretive as well as a normative and pragmatic way. The aim of this investigation is to illustrate the interrelationship between imagination and the work of the Holy Spirit in prophetic preaching, and consequently to initiate normative, practical principles in a strategic model for contemporary preaching.
To achieve these aims the study explores the ontology and epistemology of prophetic preaching. It identifies problems in the understanding of homiletic praxis, and at the same time examines the definition and history of prophetic preaching. Moreover, to respond to the question of why Brueggemann’s conceptualization regarding imagination has been highlighted, this study conducts an investigation into the available literature relating to Brueggemann’s prophetic imagination. A balanced interpretive and faithful perspective based on a reading of the whole Scripture is consistent throughout Brueggemann's oeuvre and his focus on application based on the transformational message in praxis is remarkable. Normative markers in prophetic preaching, deduced from an exploration and exegesis of specific texts in Luke and Acts, consequently bring about practical principles for application to prophetic preaching. The practical principles are formulated as follows: D (Direction-Diagnosis of the Reality); IEP (Imaginative Embossing of Problems of the Reality); S (Proclamation of the Gospel aiming at Solution); and IP (Imaginative practice). With the use of these principles, example sermons are analyzed and a new sermon for prophetic preaching is written.
The results of this study are expected to provide the preacher with a strategic model to bring prophetic preaching into practice. Lastly, the ontological and epistemological exploration attempted in this study has made a contribution in describing a thicker and more developed definition of prophetic preaching.
In conclusion, prophetic preaching itself should achieve the following aim: to be a presentation of God’s voice, spoken to the preacher and the listeners with the subjective help of the Holy Spirit's working in message transformation. / MTh (Homiletics), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015
