Dados hiperespectrais na determinação do conteúdo relativo de água na folha em cana-de-açúcar / Hyperspectral data to determine the relative water content in the sugarcane leaf

Bonilla, Magda Maria Zuleta 23 July 2015 (has links)
The sugarcane agribusiness has been suffering several kinds of problems. The most common is the drought caused by the weather changes, which reduce the water availability in the soil, affecting directly the crop yield. A large proportion of the sugarcane crop is not irrigated undergoing changes between wet and dry seasons in tropical and subtropical conditions, but when it is irrigated, it has been possible to observe an increase in the crop yield. The crop water requirements must be provided, both at the required amount and at the right time. To do this, parameters related to its moisture status have to be quantized. However, conventional methods are slow, invasive and expensive. As an alternative to reduce time and costs, the hyperspectral remote sensing has been being used to estimate the water status at different scales, because it allows capturing big amounts of information quickly. In the present study, the spectral behavior of vegetation between 400 and 2500 nm was used to quantify some parameters that establish its water status. The evaluations were conducted both in the greenhouse and the laboratory on sugarcane leaves under programmed water deficit. The laboratory data obtained were R2> 0.8 in the visible region and R2 <0.55 in the near infrared region for the RWC (relative water content). For the EWT (equivalent water thickness) was obtained a R2 <0.6 in the near infrared region.

Mechanistic studies of surface-confined electrochemical proton coupled electron transfer

2012 July 1900 (has links)
Mechanistic studies of electrochemical proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) have attracted attention for many decades due to their importance in many fields ranging from electrocatalysis to biology. However, mechanistic research is confined to only a few groups, and challenges in this field can be found in both theory and experiment. The contributions to mechanistic studies of electrochemical PCET reaction in this thesis can be categorized under the following two headings: 1) mechanistic studies of an aminobenzoquinone modified monolayer system with multiple electron/proton transfer reaction; 2) studies that attempt to develop the relationship between thermochemical data and electrochemical PCET mechanism. An aminobenzoquinone modified monolayer showing nearly ideal electrochemical behavior and high stability was successfully prepared and used as a model system for the mechanistic study of electrochemical multiple electron/proton transfer. This model system has been proposed to undergo a 2e3H transfer at low pH electrolyte and a 2e2H transfer at high pH electrolyte. Two non-destructive electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltammetry and chronocoulmetry) have been applied for the measurement of apparent standard rate constant as a function of pH. Both pH dependent apparent formal potential and pH dependent apparent standard rate constant have been used to determine the charge transfer mechanism of this monolayer system. Under the assumption of an operative PCET mechanism (i.e. electron transfer step is the rate determining step), a theoretical description of this system has been developed based on the refinement and extension of previous models. By combining this extended theoretical model with pH dependent apparent formal potential and apparent standard rate constant, charge transfer pathways have been determined and shown to be consistent with the observed pH dependent electrochemical response, in addition, the determined pathways in this aminobenzoquinone modified monolayer are similar to previous reported pathways for benzoquinone freely dissolved in aqueous buffered electrolyte. A series of analytical expressions built in this thesis demonstrate that the parameters that differentiate stepwise mechanisms from concerted mechanisms can be classified into two aspects: thermodynamic parameters, namely acid dissociation constants, standard formal potentials; and kinetic parameters, namely standard rate constants, standard transfer coefficients. Although attempts to understand the relation between controlling parameters and electrochemical PCET mechanism (stepwise versus concerted) has been reported previously by some groups, there are still lots of unresolved aspects requiring further investigation. In this thesis, an important conclusion has been drawn which is that for the stepwise mechanism, an apparent experimentally observable kinetic isotope effect (KIE) can be induced by solvent isotope induced variation of acid dissociation constants, which contradicts previous understanding. Additionally, for the first time, values of apparent KIE, which were measured for the aminobenzoquinone modified monolayer system with stepwise PCET mechanism, were successfully explained by variation in acid dissociation constants, not by variation in standard rate constants. Based on theoretical prediction, a nitroxyl radical modified bilayer showing one electron one proton transfer reaction has been prepared in an effort to afford experimental verification. After applying similar analytical procedures as those for the aminobenzoquinone modified monolayer system, this bilayer system has been shown to follow the concerted 1e1H transfer pathway in high pH electrolytes. These latter contributions provide evidence that further development in this field will eventually lead to a comprehensive theory that can use known thermochemical variables to fully predict PCET mechanism.

L' impact des programmes de formation continue sur les compétences professionnelles des enseignants dans le contexte éducatif syrien : (cas de l'enseignement de base de la première à la sixième classe) / The impact of continuous training programs on the professional skills of teachers in the educational context syrian : (the basic education from 1st class to 6th class)

Salman, Rana 18 March 2014 (has links)
As in nearly all countries, educational authorities in Syria have concerns about improving the quality of education and about there forms they seek to implement to give teachers the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills before and once they start teaching, especially in the context of economic and social change of the magnitude the world lives today. The complexity of the educational context has led the Syrian educational authorities to pay particular attention to programs for initial and continuous training of teachers. To assess the effectiveness of continuous training programs that currently exist in Syria, this thesis has set as its objective to analyze the impact of these programs on the improvement of professional skills of teachers. The statistical analysis shows that continuous training programs followed in Syria are positively correlated with all the professional skills of teachers in the sample. The continuous training programs generate, according to the estimates of the sample, a big difference in the overall level of their professional work. The analysis concludes that other factors play also a role in improving the skills of teachers. The indicator of continuous training programs is statistically significant if it adheres to other factors.

Arsenic stabilization in step-wise amended soil / Pakopinė arseno stabilizacija užterštame dirvožemyje

Vaičikauskaitė, Alfreda 01 June 2011 (has links)
This master thesis was performed in order to investigate arsenic stabilization in step-wise amended soil. Object of the work - soil which taken from the former wood impregnation industrial site in Forsmo, Sweden. It is contaminated with chromate-zinc-arsenate (CZA). Method of the work - three different amendments were used: zerovalent iron (Fe), fly-ash (FA) and peat (P). The test was performed in three weeks. During the first week, four mixtures (with each single additive and with all together) and blank soil was observed. During the second and third weeks test was performed step-wise adding amendments to soil+Fe mixture. Moisture was kept constant all the time. After each week extractions were made and later investigated by doing electrical conductivity, redox potential and pH tests. For elemental composition ICP-OES analysis was performed. The results of the work - the best result to stabilize arsenic were achieved by adding single iron. Stabilisation using iron, fly-ashes and peat elevated As leaching compared to non-amended soil. Step-wise amendment did not have a significant difference from single amelioration neither to arsenic, nor to other heavy metals investigated.

A novel classical synthetic approach to carbon nanotubes and their functionalized derivatives

Wiredu, Bernard January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Chemistry / Duy H. Hua / Carbon nanotubes are allotropes of carbon comprising of one or more grapheme sheets seamlessly joined together to form a cylinder. They are classified as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). They have potential applications ranging from conductive and high reinforcement material components, nano interconnection in electronic devices to drug delivery in biological systems. Current methods of production are high temperature arc-discharge, laser ablation of graphitic materials and chemical vapor deposition. These methods give tubes that are impure and highly heterogeneous in length, diameter and chirality thus leading to mixture metallic and semiconducting tubes. Effective application of such carbon nanotubes requires cumbersome, harsh and expensive purification and sorting into like forms. Such treatments usually compromised the structural integrity of the tubes and hence their mechanical and electrical properties. Also pristine carbon nanotubes are insoluble in most solvents. Solubility in basic organic solvents is crucial prior to their application, which requires some level of chemical manipulation or functionalization on the tubes. Currently methods of functionalization are unpredictable and limited to few oxidation reactions. A novel rational synthetic chemical approach to [12, 12] arm-chair carbon nano tube with pre-defined diameter and length has been explored utilizing cheap and simple organic building blocks and results achieved so far have been presented in this dissertation. Two approaches were employed to form the carbon-rich beltene (32) before its final conversion to the target single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) 1. A survey on carbon nanotubes and their related structures including their potential applications and properties are presented in chapter 1. In the second chapter an iron template-assisted olefin metathesis via a ferrocene intermediate served as an anchor for an effective cyclization. In chapter 3, an un-assisted olefin metathesis pathway was explored. Both approaches use a series of benzyl halide carbonylation coupling and Diels-Alder reactions to synthesize some of the key intermediates. The protocol presented in this dissertation may be used to produce functionalized carbon nanotubes with predefined length and diameter tailored for specific applications to be produced in kilogram scale for the first time since its discovery in 1991. Such an approach is expected to address most if not all of the problems associated with the traditional methods of producing carbon nanotubes.

Consumer liking and sensory attribute prediction for new product development support : applications and enhancements of belief rule-based methodology

Savan, Emanuel-Emil January 2015 (has links)
Methodologies designed to support new product development are receiving increasing interest in recent literature. A significant percentage of new product failure is attributed to a mismatch between designed product features and consumer liking. A variety of methodologies have been proposed and tested for consumer liking or preference prediction, ranging from statistical methodologies e.g. multiple linear regression (MLR) to non-statistical approaches e.g. artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and belief rule-based (BRB) systems. BRB has been previously tested for consumer preference prediction and target setting in case studies from the beverages industry. Results have indicated a number of technical and conceptual advantages which BRB holds over the aforementioned alternative approaches. This thesis focuses on presenting further advantages and applications of the BRB methodology for consumer liking prediction. The features and advantages are selected in response to challenges raised by three addressed case studies. The first case study addresses a novel industry for BRB application: the fast moving consumer goods industry, the personal care sector. A series of challenges are tackled. Firstly, stepwise linear regression, principal component analysis and AutoEncoder are tested for predictors’ selection and data reduction. Secondly, an investigation is carried out to analyse the impact of employing complete distributions, instead of averages, for sensory attributes. Moreover, the effect of modelling instrumental measurement error is assessed. The second case study addresses a different product from the personal care sector. A bi-objective prescriptive approach for BRB model structure selection and validation is proposed and tested. Genetic Algorithms and Simulated Annealing are benchmarked against complete enumeration for searching the model structures. A novel criterion based on an adjusted Akaike Information Criterion is designed for identifying the optimal model structure from the Pareto frontier based on two objectives: model complexity and model fit. The third case study introduces yet another novel industry for BRB application: the pastry and confectionary specialties industry. A new prescriptive framework, for rule validation and random training set allocation, is designed and tested. In all case studies, the BRB methodology is compared with the most popular alternative approaches: MLR, ANN, and SVM. The results indicate that BRB outperforms these methodologies both conceptually and in terms of prediction accuracy.
