Exploring the correlation between selected performance measurement tools for individual investors in South Africa

It is generally acknowledged that the share price of listed companies is not usually a true reflection of the value imbedded in the said companies. The main purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between selected performance measurement tools, namely Return on Equity (ROE) and Economic Value Added (EVA®), and the share price of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The study is a quantitative one as it uses data extracted from McGregor BFA database to investigate the relationship between the variables studied. Correlation and linear regression analyses were used in determining such relationships. This study found that there is a synergy in using ROE and EVA® as performance measurement tools and that their interaction explains 8.06% of the movement in the share price of listed companies, all things being equal. Die studie vergelyk die prestasie van 'n koop-en-hou-strategie met die van 'n tydsberekeningstrategie binne die raamwerk van die arbitrasie-prysbepalingsteorie (APT) op die nywerheidsindeks van die Johannesburgse Aandelebeurs (JA). Die periode van die studie is oor twee tydperke, naamlik Januarie 1970 tot September 1987 en Januarie 1989 tot Junie 1997. Die langtermyntendens van die nywerheidsindeks en APT-faktore is bepaal deur die beste nie-reglynige model vir elke tydreeks te vind. Reglynige meervoudige stapsgewyse regressie-ontleding is gebruik om die bewegings van die nywerheidsindeks rondom die langtermyntendens te voorspel. Die sloeringsreekse van die langtermyntendensresidutelling van die APT-faktore en die sloeringsreekse van die eerste-ordeverskiltelling van die langtermyntendensresidutelling is as moontlike voorspellers gebruik. Gegrond hierop is beslissingslyne ontwik:kel wat gebruik is vir die implementering van 'n tydsberekeningstrategie. Die belangrikste gevolgtrekking van die studie is dat die APT en 'n tydsberekeningstrategie teoreties en prakties versoenbaar is op die JA. Aanbevelings vir toekomstige navorsing is die volgende: ( 1) sistematiese risikofaktore, anders as makro-ekonomiese faktore, behoort identifiseer te word wat die voorspellingswaarde van die faktore in die tweede tydperk van die studie kan verhoog; (2) elke stap van die model wat ontwikkel is, behoort op elke indeks van die JA toegepas te word om die risiko-aangepaste opbrengskoers van 'n tydsberekeningstrategie toegepas op elkeen van die indekse met die van 'n koop-en-hou-strategie te vergelyk; en (3) die invloed van transaksiekoste en dividende op die potensiele voordele van tydsberekening moet bepaal word. / The study compares the performance of a buy-and-hold strategy with that of a markettiming strategy in the framework of the arbitrage pricing theory (APT) applied to the industrial index of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). The study period is divided into two parts, namely January 1970 to September 1987 and January 1989 to June 1997. The long-term trend of the industrial index and every APT factor is determined by finding the best nonlinear model for each time series. Linear multiple stepwise regression analysis, with the lagged time series of the long-term trend error terms of the APT factors, is used to forecast the movement of the industrial index around its long-term trend. Decision lines were developed to implement a market-timing strategy. The results of the study are as follows: • Where the lagged time series of the long-term trend error terms of the APT factors were used as possible predictors, the risk-adjusted return of a markettiming strategy was 6, 41 percent and 0, 71 percent higher than that of a buyand- hold strategy for periods one and two respectively. • Where the lagged time series of the first-order difference of the long-term trend error term of the APT factors were used as possible predictors, the riskadjusted return of the market-timing strategy was 10,40 percent and 1,04 percent higher than that of a buy-and-hold strategy for periods one and two respectively. The main conclusion of the study is that the APT and a market-timing strategy are theoretically and practically reconcilable on the JSE. The main recommendations of the study are the following: (1) systematic risk factors, other than macroeconomic factors, should be identified in order to increase the forecasting value of these factors in the second period of the study; (2) each step of the model developed in this study should be repeated on every index of the JSE; and (3) the influence of transaction costs and dividends on the potential benefits of a market-timing strategy should be determined. / Business Management / DCom (Sakebestuur)

This thesis deals with the development of application for fundamental analysis of stocks. Main goal of the thesis is to make application, which will be helpful for individual investors in performing fundamental analysis of stocks. It is desktop application, which performs calculations with high precision and it uses free on-line sources of financial data. The application was developed in Java programming language. It will be available as a~freeware alternative to proprietary fundamental analysis software on the market. The first part describes capital market and stock exchange, makes characteristics of stock and explains principle of fundamental analysis of stocks. In the second part, the market research of fundamental analysis software was realized, design and implementation of the application for fundamental analyiss was described and the application was evaluated.

Stakeholder instrument to complement the components of integrated reports for value creation, acountability and transparency

Abstracts in English, Zulu and Afrikaans / The stakeholder instrument (SI) is a conceptual framework developed to complement integrated reports for value creation, transparency and accountability. It is a tool developed specifically for stakeholders to have an understanding of the integrated reports and assist them in making informed decisions. Currently, integrated reports fail to provide meaningful insights into organisations’ performance and its strategy focus, thus making it difficult for stakeholders to understand the contents of the integrated reports. The research illuminated pertinent variables synonymous with value creation. The study involved analysis of data from 42 companies trading on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and administration of 80 questionnaires on randomly selected respondents. Significant and positive correlations between value creation and the attributes namely integrated reports; corporate governance and financial measures were established. Contributions: The results of the empirical study provide significant perceptions into the process of stakeholder value creation. The study established the significance of complementing the integrated reports in creating stakeholder value. The study, further, authenticated the stakeholder instrument as a distinct antecedent of value creation. An analysis of the relationship between working capital management and financial performance of JSE-listed construction companies in South Africa

Permanent working capital, temporary working capital, gross working capital and net working capital are four types of working capital. The construction industry, as compared to any other industry, plays an important role in the economic growth of the country. The construction industry is regarded as the largest employer in the labour market and appropriate management of liquidity is essential. Construction contracts are divided into lump sum contracts, unit price contracts and cost plus a fee contracts and have the following role players: employer, employer’s representative, professional team, contractor, sub-contractor and adjudicator. This study analysed the relationship between working capital management and financial performance of JSE listed construction companies during the period 2009-2019. Annual financial statements, which included statement of financial position and statement of financial performance of all listed construction companies during the period 2009-2019 were extracted from the external database (IRESS) to obtain the data needed for statistical analysis. This study used a quantitative research method to analyse the relationship between working capital management and financial performance. Multiple linear regression and correlation analysis were used in this study with inventory conversion period (ICP), average collection period (ACP) and average payment period (APP) as independent variables and return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and gross operating profit (GOP) as dependent variables, in order to analyse the relationship between working capital management and financial performance of JSE-listed construction companies during the period 2009-2019. Results of this study indicated that working capital management has little or no influence on the financial performance of JSE-listed construction companies, therefore, this indicates that listed construction companies in South Africa need to manage their working capital properly by putting some new policies in place on their accounts payables and receivables, in order to have a relationship between working capital management and financial performance.

Marknadens talan : En eventstudie om marknadens reaktion när företag byter VD

Purpose: The purpose of this work is to investigate how the market reacts to a change of CEO and if the impact on the share price is different when a company changes founder-CEO compared to a non founder-CEO. We chose to write about this type of phenomenon mainly because we see that CEOs today are replaced more frequently than before. Theory: The efficient market hypothesis, the agent theory and corporate governance. Method: The study is based on a quantitative deductive research approach. The companies investigated were Swedish companies listed on Nasdaq Stockholm and they have been examined using an event study and two hypothesis tests. Results: The result consists of 20 observations from 20 companies. The cumulated average abnormal return is presented for all days of the event window. The results of the hypothesis tests are also presented. Analysis: The first hypothesis test shows that the announcement of the change of CEO has an impact on the share price. The second hypothesis test shows that there is a difference regarding the impact between the announcement of change of a founder-CEO and a non founder-CEO. The event study shows that the impact of the change of a founder-CEO is positive and the impact of the change of a non founder-CEO is negative. Conclusion: The result of the study shows that the announcement of a change of CEO has a significant impact on the share price and the announcement of the change of a founder-CEO affect the stock price different from the change of a non founder-CEO. / Syfte: Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka marknadens reaktion när ett företag byter VD samt om marknaden reagerar olika mellan ett byte av grundar-VD och icke grundar-VD. Vi valde att skriva om just denna typ av fenomen då vi upplever att VD:ar idag byts ut oftare jämfört med tidigare. Teori: Den effektiva marknadshypotesen, agentteorin och corporate governance. Metod: Den metod undersökningen har utgått från är en kvantitativ metod med deduktiv ansats. Svenska börsföretag har undersökts med hjälp av ett hypotestest och en eventstudie. Empiri: Empirin består av 20 observationer från 20 företag. Den ackumulerade genomsnittliga abnormala avkastningen presenteras för alla dagar i händelsefönstret. Även empirin från hypotestesten presenteras. Analys: Hypotestestet visar att tillkännagivande av VD-byte har en påverkan på aktiekursen. Det andra hypotestestet som utförts visar att det finns en skillnad i påverkan mellan tillkännagivande av VD-byte för grundar-VD och icke grundarVD. Eventstudien visar att påverkan av grundar-VD är positiv medan påverkan av icke grundar-VD är negativ. Slutsats: Empirin av undersökningen visar att tillkännagivande av VD-byte har en signifikant påverkan på aktiekursen samt att tillkännagivande för byte av en grundar-VD påverkar aktiekursen annorlunda jämfört med tillkännagivande av byte av en icke grundar-VD.

Aspekte van die dematerialisasie van genoteerde aandele in die Suid-Afrikaanse reg

Summaries in Afrikaans and English / Text in Afrikaans / In South Africa the transfer and settlement processes associated with share transactions are essentially paper-based. The physical handling of the share certificate plays an important role in this regard. Foreign trends to reduce the movement of paper involve in broad terms the alternatives of dematerialisation and immobilisation of the share certificate. These developments cannot slavishly be followed without examining the legal nature of the South African share and share certificate. The process of immobilisation in a collective securities depository system involves no change in the nature of the shares. However, the use of a nominee where shares are held in safe custody forms a barrier between the shareholder and the issuer company which could dilute the shareholders' rights. This is even more applicable where shares are immobilised in a central depository. Further, although central depositories are based upon book-entries, they are still limited by the retention of the physical certificates. The development of electronic systems which dematerialise the share certificate must take into account the reasonable expectations of the public and should not be forced upon investors. The shareholder of a 'uncertificated' share must be placed, as far as possible, in the same position as if he had received a certificate. This requires legislation to amend present enactments and to define the rights of the shareholder. It is submitted that dematerialisation should gradually be phased in, starting with a voluntary dematerialisation in the case of holdings in the central securities depository. / In Suid-Afrika is die oordrag- en verrekeningsprosesse wat gepaardgaan met aandeletransaksies hoofsaaklik papiergebaseer. A survey of disclosure of compliance with King II by top listed South African companies : an investigative study of the companies listed on the FTSE/JSE top 40 index

Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / ENGLISH SUMMARY: During the period of change in South Africa in the year of the first democratic elections, 1994, the first King Report on Corporate Governance appeared. For the first time in South Africa, companies had a good reference for corporate practice and conduct. A second King report, commonly referred to as King II, appeared in March 2002 and expanded on the earlier Code to produce, what was considered at the time to be, a world-class code of corporate governance. In addition to the acceptance and incorporation of King II into corporate governance practice, the JSE included compliance with the King Code as part of its listing requirements. The code itself is not an enforceable set of rules, but rather guidelines to assist companies in implementing principles of good governance. In similar vein, the JSE has given companies the flexibility to justify non-compliance. This underscores the socalled comply or explain philosophy to which corporate governance in South Africa subscribes. Studies have found the level of corporate governance in South Africa to be high, especially for an emerging market. Compliance with corporate governance principles and transparency go hand in hand. In a comply or explain regime, where the regulation is considered to be done by the market, disclosure of compliance is especially important. The goal of this research project was to conduct a survey of the top listed South African companies to ascertain what the level of disclosure of corporate governance was, with specific reference to the recommendations contained in the King Code. For the purposes of this study, the top companies were defined as the FTSE/JSE Top 40 Index companies. The supposition was that most companies, having been confronted with the King Code for almost six years, would be compliant to a large degree and will disclose their compliance. This was expected to be more evident amongst top companies who have the resources and influence to effect changes sooner and take the lead on high profile issues. The study confirmed the supposition that companies, at least in the sample, were highly compliant. There were however some areas where improvements can be made to be more in line with global best practices. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gedurende die periode van vernuwing in Suid-Afrika en die jaar van die eerste demokratiese verkiesing, 1994, het die eerste King verslag op korporatiewe bestuur verskyn. An investigation of South African economic themes based on data obtained from the annual reports of industrial companies listed on the JSE Securities Exchange

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study consists of three independent papers which all broadly examine South African economic issues using accounting data obtained from the annual reports of industrial The first paper reports on employment trends amongst listed industrial companies in South Africa over the period 1996 to 2002. The results obtained showed that overall employment decreased 1,26% per annum for the companies under review. This negative trend in the largest companies in the sample. By contrast, smaller companies showed excellent growth in employment numbers. Hence appeared that smaller companies might be the most important vehicle for employment growth in the formal sector of the South African economy. It was therefore recommended that greater emphasis be placed on encouraging small business development in order to reverse the declining rates of employment in South Africa. Die derde artikel ondersoek die veranderinge wat plaasgevind het in die Suid-Afrikaanse ekonomiese groei, indiensneming, arbeidsproduktiwiteit en vergoeding en vergelyk dit met die verandering wat in die Groei, werkskepping en herverdeling (GEAR) dokument voorspel is. Die data wat in hierdie studie gebruik is, is afkomstig van die jaarverslae van 62 industriële maatskappye wat vanaf 1994 to 2000 op die JSE Effectebeurs genoteer was. Die resultate van hierdie studie het gewys dat die verbetering in arbeidsproduktiwiteit deels as gevolg van 'n afname in indiensneming, eerder as 'n bo-gemiddelde toename in toegevoegde waarde, plaasgevind het. Daar is bevind dat die maatskappye wat indiensneming verminder het, 'n negatiewe bydrae gemaak het tot die ekonomie. Verder het hierdie maatskappye ook vergoeding per werknemer verhoog wat beteken dat hulle nie in geheel bespaar het op indiensnemingskoste nie. Die maatskappye wat hulle werknemers verminder en hulle salarisse per werknemer verhoog het, het net verder bygedra tot die groeiende inkomste differensiaal in Suid-Afrika. Dit blyk dus dat min van die beramings wat in GEAR uitgelê was deur maatskappye verteenwoordigend van die formele sektor van die Suid-Afrikaanse ekonomie, in hierdie studie bereik is.
