The relationship of entrepreneurial attitude and entrepreneurshipDe Lange, Cecilia Johanna 01 January 2002 (has links)
The high unemployment rate, especially amongst schoolleavers could be counterbalanced by raising
awareness of entrepreneurship as a career option.
This investigation explores the relationship of entrepreneurial attitude, entrepreneurship and who the
entrepreneur is, as is presented in the literature. The focus has shifted from testing for personality
traits to identifying entrepreneurial attitude, attributes, behaviour and activities. A questionnaire, the
GET (General Enterprising Tendencies test) was used to determine the levels of entrepreneurial
attitude amongst a group of grade ll learners in three South African secondary schools, with the aim
of raising awareness of their personal levels of entrepreneurial attitude and making them aware of
entrepreneurship as a career option.
It was found that inter alia, a culture of entrepreneurship is not prevalent amongst learners and prospective school leavers in South Africa. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Guidance and Counseling)

Causes and manifestation of aggression among secondary school learnersMabitla, Makwetle Aubrey 11 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the causes and manifestation of aggression among secondary school learners. Aggression was defined. Various theories of aggression were discussed. From the literature study, nine hypotheses were developed. The study used a quantitative approach by means of a survey design. The research site was a rural, secondary school. A closed-ended questionnaire was used as data collection tool. Only learners were involved as respondents. The impact of various moderator variables was considered.
The study discovered that aggressive behaviour is not confined to a specific gender. Above all, female aggression is on the rise. Possible causative factors were confirmed and risk factors were identified. Recommendations were made in line with the findings based on the empirical results. Limitations of the study were also pointed out. / Education Studies / M. Ed. (Inclusive Education)

The role of the nurse educator in supporting pupil nursesMkhwanazi, Idah Sihle 31 March 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to determine the role of the nurse educator in supporting pupil nurses.
A quantitative, descriptive survey design was used with a questionnaire as data collection instrument. The sample included pupil nurses following the two year programme for enrolment as a nurse at one of the sub-campuses in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The results revealed that support was offered in the classroom and in the clinical field, though some of the pupil nurses were not happy with the clinical allocations. It was revealed that they were sometimes used as part of the workforce.
There was a significant difference between means for the four aspects of support (classroom teaching, clinical teaching, assessment and motivation). The mean ranking for classroom and clinical teaching, were significantly higher than for assessment and motivation. Recommendations with reference to nursing education and further research regarding specific aspects of pupil nurse support were made. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health studies)

A school leadership perspective on the role of emotional intelligence in the development of secondary school student leadersMoosa, Shehnaz Omar 11 1900 (has links)
is imperative for the South African education system to produce youth who are empowered to grow to be leaders of integrity and courage. Student leaders (prefects) face an enormous challenge in trying to persuade peers to be motivated and self-disciplined. The student leaders need to understand themselves as well as their peers in order to make considered responses to their peers. The level of emotional intelligence of student leaders will determine the effectiveness of their response to fellow students (learners) and allow them to fulfil their leadership responsibilities effectively.
Emotional intelligence leadership (EIL) profiles were obtained from an emotional intelligence leadership questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews which explored the role of emotional intelligence in student leadership. These research techniques allowed the researcher to gain insight into each student leader’s level of emotional functioning as well as to identify emotional intelligence leadership skills that needed to be developed further. The importance of providing training and opportunities to practise leadership skills at school was emphasized. / Teacher Education / M. Ed. (Educational Management)

Adolescents' perspectives of discipline problems at a secondary school in GautengDe Atouguia, Desiree Anne 06 1900 (has links)
Problem behaviours amongst adolescent learners continue to affect the goals of effective education. The current study sought to investigate adolescents’ perspectives of discipline problems at a secondary school in Gauteng.
A mixed method research design was followed during which questionnaires, focus groups and interviews directed the empirical investigation. The findings revealed two areas for addressing and improving the discipline problems of the secondary school, namely improving extrinsic factors and improving the current discipline system.
Based on the findings, it was suggested that the school encourage greater parent involvement and improve parent-teacher communication. Creating a positive school identity and developing teachers further was proposed.
An improved discipline system based on a positive learning approach was recommended. This included clarifying the discipline system to all role players, standardising discipline procedures throughout the school and improving follow up procedures regarding learner discipline. / Psychology of Education / M. for BSc (Agric)-students. An extensive European study tour was undertaken with the aim
of investigating and evaluating existing career orientation programmes and/or student enrichment
endeavours at the various tertiary institutions especially universities. The effectiveness
of these programmes was evaluated with the aim of utilizing and implementing aspects of
them. In this study the career orientation enrichment programme for BSc (Agric)-students
that was already designed and implemented at the University of Pretoria in 1994, is
described. The needs of the BSc (Agric)-students before and after the implementation of this
programme were determined as well as those of the partners in the agricultural industry.
Another aim of this study is to describe the foundation, design and implementation of a
scientific, accountable career orientation enrichment programme for BSc (Agric)-students at
the University of Pretoria and to evaluate the outcome thereof.
The various career development and student development theories are elucidated and
described as a foundation for an accountable career orientation enrichment programme for
tertiary students. An overview is given of career orientation programmes and initiatives in
an international, national and local context. The phenomenon of the fast changing world-ofwork
is described and defined more precisely through a literature study with reference to the implications for the training of and career orientation regarding the student in the Science of
Agriculture. An investigation was done of the career (and life-) skills that graduates have
to attain. The needs and views of BSc (Agric)-students (before and after the programme implementation)
and partners in the agricultural industry were extracted. A summary is given
of the arguments put forward in this thesis together with some recommendations that have
emerged from this research. Proposals are made for the initiation of a career centre for
students at the University of Pretoria. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

Primary school learners' attitudes on Mathematics learning in MathematicsRikhotso, Suzzy Betty 02 1900 (has links)
This dissertation presents a study on the primary school learners, attitudes on Mathematics learning in the Groot Letaba Circuit of Mopani District in Limpopo Province. Performance in Mathematics by students has persistently been poor. This study sought to investigate the primary school learners’ attitudes on Mathematics learning. The poor performance of learners in many schools in the Groot Letaba Circuit motivated the researcher to conduct this study. The situation is worsened by the inability of the heads of department and principals to guide and support educators. An exploratory qualitative case study research design was adopted for the study. The target population was 33 respondents, which comprised of five teachers and 28 learners from grade one to seven selected schools in Groot Letaba Circuit. The data for the research was collected by means of semi-structured interviews.
The study revealed that many learners have negative attitudes towards learning Mathematics and that there are many factors which contribute to the negative attitude. Improving on these factors and sensitization of the local community to discard practices which prohibit student’s effective participation in learning Mathematics could improve performance in Mathematics. It is anticipated that the findings of this study will give curriculum developers new insights into emerging issues on performance and influence the Ministry of Education on policy formulation. Learners are also expected to benefit from the findings; because improved Mathematics performance will give them opportunities to pursue science related courses in higher institutions of learning and middle level colleges. The situation is worsened by the inability of the heads of department and principals to guide and support educators.
Finally, the researcher gave general recommendations for improving the attitudes of learners towards learning Mathematics. / Inclusive Education / M. Ed. (Inclusive Education)

A study of the perceptions of climate change among honours students at two South African universitiesBenoit, Nzokizwa January 2015 (has links)
Text in English / Climate change has become part of daily conversations for scholars and activists. Everyone feels entitled to an opinion on either the causes or the prescriptions of mitigation measures. Very few question the ontological existence of climate change or wonder whether their perceptions are pre-empted by over-arching metanarratives or discourses articulated elsewhere. The impact of media and other sources of information on people’s perceptions of climate change are often taken for granted. By using discourse theory, this study aims to uncover taken-for-granted metanarratives within environmentally oriented university Honours student’s perceptions of climate change. These students are majoring in the key areas of Environmental Management studies. It aims at assessing whether their perceptions are, consciously or inadvertently, mis (aligned) to any climate change discourses. In discourse theory, Laclau and Mouffe (1985) argued that within a particular knowledge domain, there are several meaning-conferring articulations (discourses) in a struggle of fixing meaning for particular social events and activities. As such, each discourse aims at negating alternative meanings from alternative discourses and naturalising its own interpretations. Within a particular discourse, actors (individuals or groups) are interpellated i.e. defined within specific confines of action and articulations. This study uses this discourse theory to test these hypotheses. As such, the study came up with three conclusions. First, there is a metanarrative of climate change realism, in which the ontological reality of climate change is taken as a given, with no attempt at individual reflection on its ontology. Secondly, the respondents held a mediated concept of climate change, in which their views largely mirror the conceptualisations of the media and other information sources. Lastly, there is an overarching climate-change aversion metanarrative, in which climate change is regarded as negative, without any distinction between its causes and effects. / Development Studies / M.A. (Development Studies)

Learners’ perceptions of feeding scheme programmes at secondary schools in the Nzhelele East circuit, Limpopo provinceMuvhango, Thinavhuyo Gladys 04 1900 (has links)
School feeding is a tool which, today, effectively enables many millions of poor children worldwide to attend school in developed and developing countries alike. This study evaluated the perceptions of learners on the school feeding programme in one circuit in a district of Limpopo Province. It describes the benefits of school feeding and how this well-proven tool can be improved and specifically targeted to address some of the key constraints to universal secondary school completion.
The findings suggest that school feeding programmes contribute to the education and well-being of children as hungry children do not grow; cannot learn; and face many health risks. School feeding can bring children into school and out of hunger; providing food for children at school can relieve immediate short-term hunger which is very beneficial for learning to take place. Alleviating short-term hunger among children at school helps to improve their performance in school tests and to promote a normal progression from grade to grade in completing their basic education.
The study used individual interviews, document analysis and observation to obtain data from selected participants from two schools in the Nzhelele East Circuit in the Vhembe District. Responses to questions were analysed and a statistical analysis provided positive answers which revealed that the school feeding programme was effective; that more should be done to improve its delivery; that there should be a stable infrastructure and that the geographical location of the community should be taken into consideration when it comes to menu options. A number of recommendations are made to improve the implementation of the school feeding programme. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Ed. (Education Management)
