Martin, Georges 03 1900 (has links)
The use of pollen supplement is a countermeasure to honey bee malnutrition which is identified as one of the factors causing high colonies losses over the past few years in Quebec. There is little documentation on the results of using pollen supplement during different periods. The effects of pollen availability and supplementation on the development of honey bee colonies were examined during 3 different periods: in spring, during cranberry pollination and in late summer. Each period was a distinct study using 40 different colonies. In each study, pollen supplemented and pollen restricted conditions were created for one month in 10 colonies per treatment group in a 2x2 factorial design experiment. Brood rearing and honey yield were monitored until the end of summer for the spring and the cranberry pollination studies and until the end of the following spring for the late summer study. In the spring study, pollen restricted colonies reared 18% less brood (p<0.05) during the restriction period and 11% less brood (p<0.05) by the end of summer while pollen supplement had no effect (p>0.05). Colonies supplemented during cranberry pollination study reared less brood (p<0.05) by the end of summer. In the late summer study, supplemented colonies had a greater (p<0.05) spring build-up (60% more brood) and pollen restriction negatively influence (p<0.05) brood rearing. Honey yield was decreased (p<0.05) by 15 kg in colonies exposed to a pollen restriction in spring. It was increased by 1.3 kg (p<0.05) in pollen supplemented colonies during the cranberry pollination study and was reduced by 4.2 kg (p<0.05) in pollen restricted colonies in the late summer study. In conclusion, pollen supplement improved colonies population when fed in late summer and not during spring or in cranberry pollination and was without impact on honey yield.

Lindqvist, Erik, Holm, Andreas January 2014 (has links)
The effect of betaine supplementation on counter movement jumps and sprint performance among male bicycle athletes Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a seven days supplementation regimen with betaine (2,5 grams per day) on counter movement jumps and sprint performance in trained male bicyclists. Method: Six (n=6) male subjects (mean ± standard deviation age, 31,7 ± 10,2 years; height, 188,2 ± 3,6 cm; bodyweight, 82,5 ± 7,6 kg; lean body mass, 71,6 ± 7,6 kg) completed a 21 day study involving five counter movement jumps (no arm swing) followed by 4 consecutive modified 12 second Wingate sprints on a bicycle ergometer with active rest (2,5 minutes) followed by another set of five counter movement jumps. A double blind, controlled randomized cross over design was used and there was a 1 week washout between the supplementation startup for each group. Following pre-testing (baseline) the participants were randomly divided into groups by choosing one of the following supplements: “12” Placebo –2,5 grams of maltodextrine plus 12,5 mg riboflavin or “11” – Active 2,5 grams of trimethylglycine plus 12,5 mg riboflavin. Riboflavin was used so mask the “fishy odor syndrome” effect of high intakes of trimethylglycine that may cause trimethyluria. Daily consumption of capsules was divided into two doses of two capsules each with meals. One dose (two capsules) was consumed in the morning and one dose in the evening. The following variables were analyzed: Maximum Peak Power, Average Peak Power, Maximum Mean Power, Average Mean Power, Maximum Relative Power Drop, Average Relative Power Drop, Mean CMJ-Pre + Post sprints and Maximal CMJ-Pre + Post sprints. Results: None of the parameters showed statistical significance. Conclusion: Our study indicates that seven days of betaine ingestion does not seem significantly improve counter movement jump or sprint capacity in male trained bicyclists. Larger studies are needed to investigate the performance enhancing effects of betaine, especially among high performance athletes.

RECRIA DE NOVILHAS RECEBENDO FARELO DE ARROZ EM PASTAGEM DE PAPUÃ / REARING OF HEIFERS RECEVING RICE BRAN ON ALEXANDERGRASS PASTURE

Negrini, Mateus 09 March 2016 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / The work was developed with the objective to evaluate the intake of forage and beef heifers performance from 15 to 18 months old, grazing in Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) under rotational grazing method, receiving rice bran (FAI) as a supplement, at different levels (0, 0.5 and 1.0% of body weight (BW)). The experimental design was completely randomized with repeated measures over time. The use of FAI increased the total intake of dry matter (DM), total intake of crude protein and total digestible nutrients in relation to heifers exclusively on pasture. The heifers that received 1.0% PC FAI reduced the intake of forage DM increasing by 18% stocking rate (SR) and 27% BW gain per hectare (BWA) compared with the system exclusively in pasture. In the system in which the heifers received FAI at 0.5% of BW the SR and BWA were similar to other systems. In this feed system daily weight gain 18% higher than heifers exclusively on pasture and similar gain to the use of FAI at 1.0% of BW were observed. In Alexandergrass pasture under rotational grazing, using FAI at 0.5% of BW for beef heifers from 15 to 18 months of age is recommended to promote higher production response when compared to heifers exclusively on pasture and similar production when provided FAI at 1.0% of BW.

Momba?a pasture during the dry season. The experimental design was a randomized blocks with three treatments and three replications. The treatments were: mineral salt ad libidum; multiple mixture (MM) fed at 0.2% of live weight (PV); and, concentrate feed (SC) fed at 0.7% of PV. Thirty six weaned calves averaging eight months and 192 kg of initial live weight were utilized. The masses and pasture components, nutritive value and rate of forage growth were evaluated. Animal performance was measured as average daily gain (ADG) and live weight gain (LWG). The supplemental feeding was adjusted after weighing. There was no difference between periods for forage mass and leaf: stem ratio. The highest values for forage green mass, leaf blades mass and stem percentage were observed in the first trial period. The canopy height and the available forage on offer did not differ among treatments. The percentage of dead was higher for the last periods of evaluation. The leaf: stem ratio and the leaf percentage were greater in the second period. There was significant difference (p<0,05) among treatments for the ADG and were 250, 460 and 770 g/day for salt, MM and SC, respectively. The biggest LWG was observed in the treatment SC. contents of PB, DIVMO, NDF and LDA on leaf blades, thatched roofs and dead material dead not differ among treatments. The highest GPV was observed in the SC treatment. The contents of PB, DIVMO, NDF and LDA for leaf blades stem and dead material did not differ among treatments. Independent of the use supplements , it is possible to keep steers gaining weight, during dry season, since the stocking rate is appropriately adjusted / O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de suplementos na recria de bovinos em pastos de Panicum maximum cv. KOLOMAZNÍKOVÁ, Petra January 2008 (has links)
The topic of my graduation thesis is ``The Final Accounts and Statement of Balances in a Company``. The aim of this graduation thesis is a representation of process of the final accounts and statement of balances in a particular company. The graduation thesis has two parts. In the first part are defined the basic concepts which are included in the final accounts and in the statement of balances. I deal with an individual preparation work in the statement of balances for instance, a stock taking, rectifying items, time resolution of cost and revenues, etc. Further there it is dealt with closing books of accounts, tax due and deferrate tax of corporated income tax, and finally, a proper statement of balances which represent balance, profit and loss statement, supplement, eventually a statement about cash flows and an overview of changes in the shareholders´ capital. The duties link with statement of balances do not end with the fiscal period closing. The duties include audit of the statement of balances, making a record of an annual report of a company, publication of the statement of balances and the annual report of a company in a digest of documents of the Company Register and an income tax return must be submitted. In the second part of my graduation thesis is described a process of the 2007 final account and statement of balances in the Transport Undertaking in the town České Budějovice, Inc.

Efeito da suplementação de cisteína ou glutamina sobre o metabolismo dos aminoácidos sulfurados e glutationa de pacientes infectados pelo HIV nas condições de jejum e pós-sobrecarga de metionina / Effect cysteine supplementation or glutamine on the metabolism of sulfur amino acids and glutathione HIV-infected patients in fasting and post overload conditions methionine

Maria Dorotéia Borges dos Santos 03 April 2007 (has links)
Ambas as dietas reduziram GSSG/GSH (NAC > Gln) e apenas NAC aumentou (6 x) a Hcy. / BACKGROUNO: Methionine (Met), cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), and, taurine (Tau) are the 4 sulfur-containing amino acids (SAA), but only Met and Cys are incorporated into proteins. The 3 major products of SAA, glutathione (GSH), Hcy and Tau influence, mainly, inflammatory and of immune responses. Tau and GSH ameliorate inflammation whereas Hcy has the opposite effect. HIV+ patients present low levelis of GSH and other antioxidants nutrients, showing a direct relationship between Cys (and GSH) with CD4+/ cells. How changes in SAA intake influence this phenomenon is unknown and the relationships among Hcy, inflammatory diseases, and in vitro alterations in immune cell behavior create a cautionary note about supplementation of diets with SAA. OBJECTIVE: To investigate SAA pathways in HIV+ patients on fast and Met-overload (Met-DL) states after taken diet habitual without (HD) or with supplements of Cys (NAC) or glutamine (Gln). METHOOS: 12 HIV+ (6M and 6F, 25-36 yrs old) patients under HAART without secondary infections and 20 healthy (10M and 10F, 23-28 yrs old) controls were randomly assigned to either NAC (N-acetylcysteine, 1g/d) or Gln (20g/d) diets, in a 7-day diet crossover design, separated by a 7-day washout (with HD) period. Blood samples were drawn after overnight fast before (MO) and after each dietary treatments (M1) for the resting measurements. Immediately after blood sampling ali subjects started the Met-DL by ingesting at once 100 mg Met/kg BW and having the blood draw after 2 and 4 hours for the area under the curve (AUC) determination. At MO both groups were assessed for anthropometry (BMI, kg/m2), glomerular (plasma urea and creatinina) and hepatocellular (plasma &#947;GT activity) funetions, nutritional (albumin, calcium, folic acid and vitamin B12) and antioxidant (uric acid, GSH, GSSG, Hey) states, glucose, lipids (triglycerides and cholesterol fractions) and SAA, serine (Ser), glyeine (Gly), glutamate (Glu) and Gln. The HIV+ group was characterized also by viral load, CD4+ and CD8+ counts. The statistical comparisons between groups and among diets showed group homogeneity for 8MI, albumin, calcium, vitamin B12, Hey, HDL-cholesterol, urea and creatinine. The patients presented higher values of glucose, triglycerides, &#947;-GT, LDL-cholesterol, and GSSG along with lower concentrations of uric acid, GSH and all but Hcy amino acids. The Met-OL equalized (&#916; values) the groups for Met, Hcy, Tau and Gln. NAC and Gln diets led the HIV+ group to a higher concentrations of GSH (NAC > Gln) by acting differently on its precursors: Gly (Gln > NAC) and Cys (NAC > Gln), resulting similar consumption of Ser and production of Tau. Both diets reduced GSSG/GSH (NAC > Gln) and only NAC increased (6 x) Hey. The later was worsened by Met-OL. Thus HIV+ results in multiple deficiencies of vitamins and amino acids leading to lower levels of GSH and higher GSSG/GSH ration. The main problems of lower formation of Cys and low ineorporation of Cys and Gly into GSH were greatly solved by giving Met, NAC and Gln to the patients, hence remaining the drawback of increasing Hcy with Met or NAC supplements.

Die Versorgungssituation psychischer Störungen in Deutschland: Eine klinisch-epidemiologische Abschätzung anhand des Bundes-Gesundheitssurveys 1998

Wittchen, Hans-Ulrich, Jacobi, Frank January 2001 (has links)
Data from the German Health Interview and Examination Survey, Mental Health Supplement (N=4181) reveal that 32% (15,6 million people) of the adult population between 18 and 65 years of age suffer from one or more mental disorders. Among those only 36% receive treatment which also varies in type, duration, and adequacy. The proportion of cases receiving “adequate evidence- based treatments” was estimated to be about 10%.Lowest treatment rates were found for somatoform disorders and substance abuses, highest for psychotic disorders, panic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, and dysthymia. The data reveal substantial regional differences with regard to treatment rates (e.g. lower rates in regions without universities or institutions offering postgraduate mental health education). The paper concludes that, depending on the diagnosis, a considerable degree of unmet medical needs exist for the majority of people affected by mental disorders. No evidence was found for an excessive supply of health care for the patients suffering from mental disorders or for treatments without an existing clinical need.

Complex Dietary Interventions to Slow Rates of Aging

Aksenov, Vadim 01 September 2014 (has links)
<p>Aging erodes motivation, cognition, sensory modalities and physical capacities, effectively depleting quality of life. Declining sensory, cognitive and motor function are reliable biomarkers of aging and mortality risk. These declines are associated with dysregulation of systemic and cellular processes. We developed a complex dietary supplement (DSP) designed to ameliorate five mechanisms of aging (oxidative processes, inflammation, mitochondrial function, insulin resistance and membrane integrity). Remarkably, normal mice fed the DSP retained youthful functionality into old ages, reflecting slower aging rates. Marked improvements in motor function, memory capacity, spatial learning, muscle strength, visual acuity, olfaction, fecundity and important behavioral functions were observed in aging supplemented mice. Conversely, untreated control animals showed age-related declines in all of the above. Functional improvements were associated with reduced oxidative damage, elevated mitochondrial activity, positive cellular energy balance, improved glucose tolerance, boosted neurotransmitters, greater synaptic density and higher neuronal numbers throughout the brain. A 30% reduction in cancer rates was also documented for DSP treated p53+/- mice. The vast functional benefits greatly exceed the modest longevity extension (11%) in normal supplemented mice. For aging humans, maintaining functionality and performance into later years may provide greater socioeconomic and health benefits than simply prolonging lifespan. Implications of these findings extend to common age-related pathologies including dementia and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, cancer, sarcopenia and age-related macular degeneration. Although identifying the role of specific ingredients remains outstanding, results provide proof of principle that complex dietary cocktails can powerfully ameliorate biomarkers of aging and modulate mechanisms considered ultimate goals for aging interventions.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
