Retrieval of Line-drawing Images Based on Surrounding TextLin, Shih-Hsiu 06 August 2004 (has links)
As advances of information technology, engineering consulting firms have gradually digitalized their documents and line-drawing images. Such digital libraries greatly facilitate document retrievals. However, engineers still face a challenging issue: searches and retrievals of line-drawing images in a digital library. With a small number of line-drawing images in a digital library, engineers can browse thumbnails for locating relevant images. As the number of line-drawing images increases, the manual browsing process is time-consuming and frustrated.
In response to the need and importance of supporting efficient and effective retrieval of line-drawing images, this thesis aims to develop a line-drawing image retrieval system. Typically, a line-drawing image within an engineering document is associated with surrounding text for description or illustration purpose. Such surrounding text provides important information for automatically indexing the line-drawing image. With extracted indexes (or keywords), retrieval of line-drawing images can be accomplished using a traditional information retrieval technique.
Specifically, in this study, we propose a line-drawing image retrieval system based on surrounding text. We develop four models for defining surrounding text boundaries for line-drawing images. Furthermore, two information retrieval techniques (one with and one without query expansion) are implemented and evaluated. According to our empirical evaluations, the surrounding text boundary model with image caption together with three sentences (preceding, image anchoring, and successive sentences) would result in the best retrieval effectiveness, as measured by recall and precision rates.

The notion that pretrial media coverage impacts the judicial process of highly publicized trials is not limited to contemporary times. This study sheds light on the modem day issues that pretrial media surrounding celebrity criminal cases imposes on the United States judicial system and juries. A literature review examines the conflict between the First, Sixth and Fourteenth Amendment rights to free press and fair trials, the impact of prejudicial pretrial media, precedents established in case law, and remedies that the courts use to limit the effects of prejudicial media. Expanding upon the literature review, the study next analyzes the public's view on crime, the media's manipulation of celebrity criminal trials, social and psychological theories on pretrial publicity, problems with current remedial measures, and specific celebrity case examples. The study provides a comprehensive analysis examining each individual aspect in determining the overall effect pretrial media has on celebrity criminal cases. The media is an essential part of society, but its reporting of the pretrial stages of celebrity criminal court cases impacts the jury's ability to give a celebrity defendant a fair trial.

By considering Grosz’s framework on the individual’s personal surrounding space as the theoretical foundation for interpreting body-space interactions, the experimental practices in this project use the designer’s body across the digital and physical realms to transform the surrounding space into spatial bodies. These spatial bodies become wearable constructions in tangible materials, i.e., reused lace, as extensions of the self, showcasing one’s surrounding space.

Previous issue date: 2016-03-31 / The paper resides on the field of critical environmental education, whose perspective is based upon the purposes of being revealing and committed to the transformation of social contexts and to the education of people capable of identifying, questioning, proposing solutions and acting before social environmental questions. The study took place among individuals from Vila de São Jorge, located near Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (PNCV), in Goiás. The population is composed mainly by former miners and most of them are submitted to difficult survival situations. Interventions from those people in situations of social contexts of the Vila could contribute to the constitution of better living conditions; however, this intervention is low in the village. In order to analyze what would most favor the participation of the community, we have developed a case study which counted with 44 people and whose data collection took place in different periods of time during three years. We have used instruments recommended for qualitative research and have applied the content analysis method through the technique of categorization. Thus, through the perspective of critical environmental education, we have analyzed the conceptions of environment, the conceptions and practices of environmental education, and individuals’ interests and participations. Inferences were possible through the meaning of the messages which emerged from the interviews with the individuals with the support of information from other sources. The analysis about individuals’ interests and participation shows prevalence of natural dimensions of space, which favors a synergy of actions to decrease degradation, yet which reflects an ‘ecologized’ perspective of the social difficulties seen in the analysis. Those interests and participation relate to the prevailing conception of environment as resource which conditions utilitarian views. Other conceptions/practices of environmental education with holistic perspectives, of awareness and naturalist, also appear in the analysis. Nevertheless, once they do not intend to explicit the contradictions in their process, they do not stimulate questioning postures or interventions in the poor living conditions in the place. Therefore, abstracted from multiple social relations, they little contribute to comprehending social environmental problems more deeply. Critical views of space and interactions, which are propitious to the stimulus of individuals’ participation, appear among the interviewed people, even though minimally. Situated in social and political dimensions, such views could contribute to the critical development of the human being, which is an important factor in the fight for better living conditions. The study of those categories allowed us to conclude that the aspects the favor more participation from the community are reduced. Even though, we consider that such aspects could promote participation, once they assume critical interventions from the individuals, and they can be widened to a larger number of people through interaction with one another, favored by spaces such as the associations at Vila de São Jorge. / Este trabalho situa-se no campo da educação ambiental crítica, cuja perspectiva se fundamenta nos propósitos de ser desveladora e comprometida com a transformação dos contextos sociais e a formação de pessoas capazes de identificar, questionar, propor soluções e agir perante as questões socioambientais. O estudo foi realizado com os sujeitos da Vila de São Jorge, localizada nas proximidades do Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros (PNCV), em Goiás. A população, formada basicamente por ex-garimpeiros, vive submetida a situações de difícil sobrevivência para a maioria. A intervenção dessa população nas situações do contexto social da Vila poderia contribuir para a constituição de melhores condições sociais; no entanto, essa intervenção é baixa no povoado. Para analisar o que favoreceria a maior participação da comunidade, desenvolvemos um estudo de caso que contou com a participação de 44 pessoas e cuja coleta dos dados ocorreu em períodos diferentes, durante três anos. Utilizamos instrumentos sugeridos para as pesquisas qualitativas e aplicamos o método da análise de conteúdo pela técnica da categorização. Assim, pela perspectiva da educação ambiental crítica, analisamos as concepções de meio ambiente, as concepções e práticas de educação ambiental e os interesses e a participação dos sujeitos. As inferências foram possíveis pelo significado das mensagens que emergiram de entrevistas com os sujeitos com o apoio de informações provenientes de outras fontes. A análise sobre os interesses e a participação dos sujeitos mostra uma predominância das dimensões naturais do espaço, o que favorece uma sinergia de ações para diminuir a degradação, mas que reflete uma percepção “ecologizada” das dificuldades sociais apreendidas na análise. Esses interesses e participação relacionam-se com a concepção predominante de meio ambiente como recurso que condiciona visões utilitaristas. Outras concepções/práticas, de educação ambiental, com perspectivas holísticas, de sensibilização e naturalistas, também aparecem na análise. No entanto, como não pretendem a explicitação das contradições em seus processos, não estimulam posturas de questionamentos e intervenção nas condições precárias de vida no lugar. Abstraídas, portanto, das múltiplas relações sociais, pouco contribuem para compreensões mais aprofundadas acerca dos problemas socioambientais. Visões críticas de espaço e interações, que são mais propícias ao estímulo da participação dos sujeitos, aparecem mesmo que minimamente entre os entrevistados. Situadas em dimensões sociais e políticas, tais visões poderiam contribuir para o desenvolvimento crítico do ser humano, o que é um fator importante na luta por melhores condições de vida. O estudo dessas categorias permitiu-nos concluir que os aspectos favoráveis a maior participação da comunidade são reduzidos. Mesmo assim, consideramos que tais aspectos propiciariam a participação, pois pressupõem a intervenção crítica dos sujeitos e podem ser ampliados a um maior número de pessoas pela interação uma com as outras, favorecida por espaços como o de associações na Vila de São Jorge.

<p>The aim of the study was to analyse relations between the school and the surrounding world and how these relations affects the schools’ work for sustainable development. This was mainly an interview study but teachers’ self-valuations have also been used. Totally six teachers at two primary schools has been interwied. The schools were chosen because of their acknowledged work for sustainable development. From the interviews, it was found how the teachers interpreted the conception the schools´ surrounding world, what relations the schools had with the surrounding world and how that affected the schools´ work for sustainable development. The surrounding world was interpreted as both the close and immediate neighborhood but also in a wider perspective as other countries. The schools had mostly contacts with the close-by immediate surroundings. The school situated in the urban environment had more access the culture of the city and the school situated near nature used the forest and water more often. The schools had a few national and international contacts. The relationships with surrounding world changed over time and with age of the pupils. Personal contacts and interest helped to establish contacts. The teachers see the school as an integral part of the society. The relations with the surrounding world seem to have a positive impact on education for sustainable development. The learning became concrete, varied and the pupils view themselves as a part of something larger. Ecological, social and economic perspective could be identified in the schools relations with surrounding world. According to the self-evaluations the schools had more contacts to the surrounding world than to the society.</p> / <p>Syftet med uppsatsen var att undersöka relationer mellan skola och omvärld och hur de påverkar skolornas arbete för hållbar utveckling. Sex pedagoger intervjuades och en kvantitativ sammanställning av pedagogers självvärdering gjordes. Skolorna valdes utifrån sitt uttalade arbete för hållbar utveckling. Intervjuerna undersökte hur pedagogerna tolkade begreppet skolans omvärld, vilka omvärldskontakter man hade och hur de påverkade lärande för hållbar utveckling. Omvärlden tolkades som skolans omedelbara närhet men även i ett vidare perspektiv. Skolorna hade flest kontakter med den närliggande omvärlden. Eventuellt kunde skolan placerad i en urban miljö utnyttja stadens kultur mer och den andra skolan placerad nära naturen utnyttjade skog och vatten mer. Nationella och enstaka internationella kontakter förekom. Kontakterna varierade över tid och förändrades med elevernas ålder. Personligt nätverk och internet var framgångsfaktorer för att skapa kontakter. Pedagogerna såg skolan som en del av samhället (det integrerade perspektivet). Genom omvärldskontakter blev lärandet för hållbar utveckling konkret, varierat och eleverna såg sig själva som en del av något större. Previous issue date: 2007-10-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / I suggest the expression Fluid Space as a tool to thinking works that, as installed, incorporate the surrounding space as well as the spectator. Since the late 50's, the realisation of artistic proposals from their specific relations with site is fundamental for the spectator's insertion and experience. The expression was coined from my own and other artists production, who render the art work concrete through the integration of movement, action and use. Using as reference texts from the artists Robert Morris, Richard Serra and Hélio Oiticica, written between 1960 and 1970, a discussion draws close matters concerning a mobile condition, the way the work changes as integrate itself in the exhibitional space. Adding to this condition is the idea of non-intentionallity suggested by the composer John Cage, indeterminacy presented as poetic process, opened to criation and a work component. The living structure, presented by the critic Guy Brett, in which movement is thought as action propellant in the spectator's body also reinforces the idea of the fluidness which arises in participation. In this sense, the space-work arises from the site choice, followed by the activation promoted by the spectator / O termo Espaço Fluido está sendo por mim proposto para pensar obras que, ao serem instaladas, incorporam o espaço de apresentação, bem como o espectador. A realização de propostas artísticas a partir de sua relação específica com o lugar vem se apresentando, desde o final dos anos 50, constituindo-se fundamental para a inserção e a experiência do espectador. A formulação do termo partiu da minha própria produção artística e de outros artistas, que presenciamos a concreção da obra através da integração de movimentos, ações e usos . Tomando como referência textos dos artistas Robert Morris, Richard Serra e Hélio Oiticica, escritos entre os anos 1960 e 1970, abordam-se questões que se aproximam de uma condição de mobilidade, ou seja, a maneira como a obra se modifica ao integrar-se ao espaço expositivo. Acrescida a esta condição há a idéia do não-intencional abordada pelo compositor John Cage, como indeterminação que se apresenta como processo poético, aberto à criação e incorporado à obra. A estrutura viva, apresentada pelo crítico Guy Brett, em que o movimento é pensado como propulsor de ações no corpo do espectador também adere-se e reforça a idéia de fluidez que surge pela participação. Previous issue date: 2016-08-24 / This research aims to investigate how the brazilian law legitimated and allowed extensive land
tracks and farms were transformed into urban space where it entered Brasilia. This transformation
affected a territory which in the past served as housing for indigenous people and rural
communities. Currently, quilombolas and ciganos remained in the surroundings, next to a large
influx of immigrants. From the questioning of the use of the terms "region" and "development",
contained in the laws, tries to understand how a set of rules (Constitution, complementary and
ordinary laws, decrees, etc.) enabled the emergence of a periphery in the Capital Federal. This fact
accelerated the loss of rural and environmental characteristics and regulated actions of interest to
economic groups, whose concern is similar to private corporations who decided to colonize
Brasilia and the surrounding areas - and even the modern capital Goiânia. The Integrated
Development Region of the Federal District and surrounding areas, externalized by
Complementary Law No. 94 of 19 February 1998, is not effective legal instrument, in that it denies
the Surrounding the existence of a fund of funds. The same does not happen with the Federal
District, attended by the Federal Government with the transfer of public resources. For this
understanding, it was used as a theoretical framework the critical propositions of law, discursive
analysis of legislation and selecting a normative content that enables draw conclusions from the
theoretical framework to understand the law and language. / Esta pesquisa se propõe a investigar como a legislação brasileira legitimou e permitiu que
extensas faixas de terras e fazendas se transformassem em espaço urbano onde se inseriu
Brasília. Tal transformação afetou um território que no passado serviu de moradia para povos
indígenas e comunidades rurais. Na atualidade, quilombolas e ciganos permaneceram no
Entorno, ao lado de um grande fluxo de imigrantes. A partir do questionamento do uso de
expressões como ―região‖ e ―desenvolvimento‖, que constam das leis, tenta-se
compreender como um conjunto normativo (Constituição, leis complementares e ordinária,
decretos, etc) possibilitou o aparecimento de uma periferia na Capital Federal. Tal fato
acelerou a perda das características rurais e ambientais e regulamentou ações de interesse
dos grupos econômicos, cuja preocupação é semelhante às corporações privadas que
resolveram colonizar Brasília e o Entorno – e até mesmo a moderna capital Goiânia. A Região
Integrada de Desenvolvimento do Distrito Federal e Entorno, exteriorizada pela Lei
Complementar nº 94, de 19 de fevereiro de 1998, se revela instrumento jurídico ineficaz, na
medida em que nega ao Entorno a existência de um fundo de recursos financeiros. O mesmo
