Czykiel, Renata January 2013 (has links)
Concerns about environmental and social issues have been increasing over the years, especially with regard to the efforts to reduce the impacts caused by man. In this context, new ways to insert Sustainability in citizens' lives and organizations decisions have been discussed, seeking to combine economic growth with environmental conservation and social equity. Administrators, due to the functions they perform in their jobs, have the opportunity to include in their decisions and attitudes principles of Sustainability, triggering a change that starts within organizations and reflects in the society. In order to contribute with the generation of a more ethical and responsible professional that insertion of Education for Sustainability in the graduation of managers was the subject of this work. The main objective was to explore possibilities that allow relating directly the theme Sustainability in different areas of the graduation course in Business Management of Business Management School at UFRGS. To accomplish these objectives, an initial research was conducted through a questionnaire to students at the end of the course in order to know what they think about sustainability in their graduation and in the labor market. After that, the programs of all disciplines of the Business Management Graduation Course were analyzed for mapping the content that is more directly related to Sustainability. It was selected from each discipline area (Finance, Marketing, Public Administration, Production and Systems and Human Resources) and one or more threads in each one of them to hold a class by researchers including issues related to sustainability. At the end of each class students answered a questionnaire and, to the teachers of those disciplines, a testimonial was asked. Documentary analysis and action research were used as methods for this project and data were analyzed using content analysis as technique. The main results show that students think nowadays it is important to have an approach regarding sustainability during the course of business management, and that the demand for this type of professional exists and will increase over the years. Regarding the classes, most students said that they are very interested in the theme and find relevant or very relevant that sustainability should be incorporated into the course in the next semester. Some positive points from the experience highlighted by the students were: the opportunity to learn more about the topic in the first semesters of the course, the practical application of the subject in the context of organizations and the dynamics and activities. In formation at management, sustainability is perceived as an essential aspect, which is now a difference, but it tends to become a basic requirement for professionals.

Sustainability of the fishing program of the government of the state of Cearà in public water collections / Sustentabilidade do programa de peixamento do governo do estado do Cearà em coleÃÃes de Ãguas pÃblicas

Samiria Maria Oliveira da Silva 19 April 2011 (has links)
The study evaluated the sustainability of the Fishing Program of the Government of the State of Cearà in public water collections in the city of CanindÃ-CE. For this study, both a quantitative research and a survey were carried through. In the quantitative approach statistical instruments were used, both in the gathering and in the treatment of the data. The survey was accomplished with the application of half-structuralized questionnaires to the seventy-two beneficiary families from the city mentioned above and the technicians involved in the program as well. It was used descriptive statistics to trace the profile of the beneficiaries and four main dimensions had been considered (social, environmental, economical and institutional) in order to calculate the indexes of sustainability and the determination of the sustainability degree. It was observed that in the city of Canindà the Fishing Program is directed to a target-public having the following features: low degree of education or illiterate, an average age of 49 years old, strong tradition in their occupations and having fishing as a complementary activity. The values calculated for the social, environmental, economical and institutional indexes, respectively, had been: 0,562, 0,563, 0,343, and 0,652. So that, it was determined that the Program, considering the predetermined classification, presents a medium level of sustainability meaning that it still has conditions to be improved in order to increase its Index of Sustainability to good or excellent.

Considering this problem, we sought to establish new paths for more sustainable communities through environmental education in formal educational environments. The research sought to analyze in two distinct stages the social-environmental school context lived through the Environmental Education logic. The first stage was to analyze the wider school sustainability scenario of municipal schools of Marechal Cândido Rondon through a social-environmental mapping and their related actions to the Environmental Education in the scholar management. Moreover, the second stage of the study was directed to a public school of the city, seeking to understand the social and environmental background thereof, and attempting to work to develop a more complex and holistic building of sustainability in the school environment. The data collection was given through two main tools, the first one conduced was a semi-structured interview with a questionnaire, formulated using open and closed questions that allowed a greater freedom and greater wealth in the research survey research data, allowing a more detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis. Eleven schools In total were investigated, aiming to understand the main characteristics that exists in the school's sustainability levels, such as the level of school sustainability, its vulnerabilities, weaknesses and existing potential in different local realities. In the context that was directed to the particular work with the municipal school, it was sought to carry out actions that would help to establish the culture of school sustainability within the community. As a conclusion a general perspective showed that there is still a large estrangement between the ideal setting for school sustainability and what was found in the formal educational spaces that were analyzed in the research. The paper also showed that implementing a new culture of school sustainability may act directly in the implementation of sustainability concepts throughout the school community / O presente trabalho científico investigou a ascensão cotidiana da necessidade de adaptação a uma rotina de vários problemas socioambientais ocasionados pelo modelo econômico capitalista, que coloca em cheque o futuro socioambiental.

Corporate leadership development programs towards sustainability

Rosengren, Anna, Maher Elsayed, Mohamed, Eklund, Niklas January 2017 (has links)
With the increasing level of complexity that leaders face today, represented in the accelerating pace of technology advancement and globalization, along with the climate change indicators reaching unprecedented levels, the need for good leadership quality has become more crucial than ever. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development provides a systems perspective, a principle-based definition and a way to strategically move towards sustainability, however still there is a need to specify what is required for leaders to lead organizations through this process. The aim of the thesis is to explore how corporate leadership development companies can develop the essential leadership competencies to address the sustainability challenge. The study used the Key Competences in Sustainability Framework as a base to interview six leadership development companies from different areas in the world. The findings revealed that there is an essential need for self-development for leaders to handle complexity, as well as the need from leaders to create the proper conditions for their organizations to utilize the competences from the KCSF. Furthermore the results also showcased the need for standard common definition regarding sustainability.

Chasing the Greater Good : A Qualitative study in how Sustainability is steered and implemented through Control Systems

Jansson, Andreas, Lind, Ebba January 2018 (has links)
Today's society is a vulnerable society. Climate change and social injustices are genuine threats to how the lives of future generations are going to be, and humans are the cause of these problems. Sustainable development needs to be achieved if we want future generations to have a good and dignified existence. Companies have a significant impact on society, and therefore play an essential role in how successful we are in achieving sustainable development. Past research has found that control systems, especially reward systems, can be important to implement sustainability in companies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to get a deeper understanding of how organizations implement and steer sustainability by including it in their control systems, and particularly, how reward systems are used in the context of sustainability. By studying past research and theories regarding sustainable development, management control, performance measurements and reward systems, we have gained knowledge and an understanding of how these areas are connected. To achieve the purpose of this study, a qualitative study was done in which we conducted eleven semi-structured interviews with managers and sustainability experts from six different companies. Based on the empirical findings of the study, we were able to make several conclusions. First, sustainability is integrated into already existing control systems, which often interact and are related to each other, and we found that there is a balance between social and environmental dimensions. Companies choose to focus on sustainability issues were they have the most negative impact, and they include sustainability mostly in their cybernetic and administrative controls, for instance through performance measurements (KPIs) and policy documents. Also, several companies incorporate sustainability into their reward systems, such as rewards for safety parameters and reducing CO² emissions. What kind of rewards that are given for sustainability performance differ, some companies give monetary rewards while other give non-monetary. Non-monetary rewards are in the findings presented as most valuable for sustainability. We can also conclude that there are challenges with rewarding sustainability, but many respondents have overcome them and use reward systems as a way of implementing sustainability. Those who do not reward sustainability today can imagine doing so in the near future.

Sustainable Indicators : A case study of stakeholder perceptions and expectations on environmental sustainability reporting at Riksbyggen, a Swedish cooperative real estate company.

Häckner, Lina January 2011 (has links)
Stakeholder demands on transparency and ethical behaviour have quickly increased and today the majority of large Swedish companies publish some form of sustainability report. The construction- and real estate sector has large environmental impacts, but despite producing 40% of Sweden‟s energy use, material and waste sustainability reporting is not well established in the sector. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is the most widely used framework for sustainability reporting. GRI includes demands for stakeholder inclusiveness and stakeholder‟s reasonable expectations have to be taken into account in reporting. Studies of sustainability reports however reveal that companies often fail to address major impacts on sustainability in their sustainability reports. This thesis aims to evaluate stakeholder‟s role in reporting of sustainability as well as the potential role of the report for stakeholders by identifying their perception and expectations on Riksbyggens upcoming sustainability report. The theoretical framework consists of stakeholder theory focusing on Freeman and the descriptive school, sustainability reporting focusing on GRI and indicators focusing on sustainability indicators. A case study was conducted at Riksbyggen, a Swedish building, property management and residential services company. 93 surveys were collected, providing a combination of qualitative and quantitative data. Results show that stakeholders play an important role in reporting of actual sustainability as demands reaches beyond GRI requirements, evaluated reports and company boundaries. The study however revealed a clear distinction between stakeholder groups‟ demands for information. Handling the diverging demands is in this case the most central challenge in the creation of an apt sustainability report.

How does sustainability affect you? : A holistic view of how sustainability affects consumers’ apparel purchasing behaviour in Sweden and in Finland

Räisänen, Niina January 2018 (has links)
Background Sustainability is one of the hot topics in the apparel industry currently. Companies are working to improve an environmental impact of clothing production and social conditions at manufacturers and communicating to the public about these practices. At the same time, consumers are showing a growing interest towards sustainability in the apparel industry. However, there is little knowledge about how consumers perceive sustainability and how much they pay attention to the apparel companies’ sustainability practices. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to examine, with a holistic perspective, how consumers perceive sustainability in the apparel industry and how it affects their purchasing behaviour. Methodology A web-based self-completion questionnaire was conducted to examine consumers’ clothing purchasing behaviour and their perception of sustainability within the apparel industry. Convenience sampling method was used for the primary data collection. In total, 423 respondents from Sweden and Finland participated in this study. Findings The findings of this study show that the respondents are generally concerned about environmental issues in the apparel industry. However, their favourable attitudes seldom transfer into their purchasing intentions. Furthermore, the results show that the consumers of this study do not actively search sustainability information. Particularly they are not paying attention to the communication at the point of clothing purchase. Contribution This study gives insights into how consumers reflect upon sustainability when purchasing clothes and how actively they search for sustainability information. These insights are a valuable base for future improvements in order to achieve a meaningful manner in the apparel industry’s sustainability communication.

Hållbarhetslogik i de svenska storbankerna : En analys av utvecklingen av bankernas hållbarhetsredovisningar / Sustainability logic in the Swedish major banks : An analysis of the development of the banks’ sustainability reports

Lundström, Felicia, Skatka, Max January 2017 (has links)
Background and Problematization: In today’s society the knowledge about sustainability has increased, therefore many companies have decided to publish a sustainability report where they explain how they conduct their operation in a sustainable manner. Companies sustainability efforts have also become more harmonized around the world which might indicate that a certain sustainability logic has developed. Media have recently especially paid attention to issues of banks and have enlightened negative occurrences such as the tax evasion in Panama and the financial crisis of 2007-2008 that have led to people losing their confidence in banks. Purpose: Due to the increased attention and changes in sustainability work, the purpose of this study is to analyse if there exists a sustainability logic within the four major banks in Sweden, Handelsbanken, Nordea, SEB and Swedbank and how the logic has developed over time. Methodology: In order to see if there exists a sustainability logic within the four banks we decided to conduct a qualitative content analysis of the banks’ sustainability reports. The reports have been coded in a software program called Nvivo. The reports have been coded based on four categories: employees, ethics, environment and society. Result: There exists a sustainability logic within the banks which partially can be explained by the fact that they are a part of the same business field. They all operate in the same market, offer similar products and services, have similar stakeholders and follow the same laws and regulations. In the sustainability reports we can see a clear development regarding the level of responsibility banks have taken when it comes to their impact on environmental and ethical questions within their investments and customers. This development can be explained by how they have adapted to changed norms, laws and values in the community. We can also see how a coercive isomorphism has contributed to a harmonization of their sustainability work through changed laws regarding both capital demands and financing of terrorism.

Sustainability of nature-based tourism

Törn, A. (Anne) 04 December 2007 (has links)
Abstract Nature-based tourism has increased considerably during recent years, which has raised questions about the tolerance of ecosystems experiencing growing visitor numbers. The present thesis focuses on the ecological and social sustainability of nature-based tourism in protected areas and their surroundings. The objective of the ecological studies was to determine the effects of tourism on vegetation, soils and risk of introduction of alien plant species. The social survey investigated whether opinions concerning nature conservation and tourism by local people are dependent on socio-economic and demographic factors. The studies were carried out in Oulanka and Pallas-Ounastunturi National Parks, and in the Ruka and Syöte regions, in northern Finland. This research demonstrated that nature-based tourism (hiking, horse-riding and skiing) affected boreal forests, altering vegetation, soils and trail networks. The major effects were; reduction in vegetation cover, including of different life-forms, changes in plant species composition, soil chemistry and soil erosion. Trampling decreased plant cover more on slopes compared to flat terrain. Moreover, downward trampling reduced the plant cover more than did upward trampling. In addition, horse riding resulted in the introduction and establishment of a range of alien plant species. In general, ecological changes due to nature-based tourism were inevitable even when there were limited numbers of visitors. Respondents to the survey were classified into three groups according to their opinions concerning nature conservation and tourism development: (i) supporters of nature conservation, (ii) critical to nature conservation and (iii) critical to tourism development. The majority of respondents were supporters of nature conservation. However, opinions were strongly dependent on the socio-demographic background of the respondents, such as residential area, age, level of education and indigenousness. Since the impacts of tourism were dependent on the characteristics of plants and habitats and the quality of activities, case-specific planning, monitoring and rapid responses are the most efficient methods in avoiding irreversible environmental damages. Furthermore, close co-operation between different stakeholders and detailed scientific information about the ecological, economic and social elements of sustainability are needed to promote a sustainable development of nature-based tourism.
