Applying Anomaly Detection to Search for New Physics with the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider

Kahn, Alan January 2022 (has links)
A search for a heavy new particle Y decaying to a Standard Model Higgs boson H and another new particle X is presented. The search is performed using 139 fb−1 of p−p collision data at √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. The H boson is identified through its decays to bb, with the only assumption applied to X being that it decays hadronically. The X is identified through a novel anomaly detection method via the use of a Variational Recurrent Neural Network trained directly on data collected by the ATLAS detector. This effort marks the first application of a fully unsupervised machine learning method to an ATLAS analysis. An additional benchmark based on interpreting the Y → XH process in the context of a heavy vector triplet model in which the X decays to two quarks defines an additional signal region in which upper limits on the HVT process cross section are reported at 95% confidence level.

Ecumenism and theological convergence : a comparative analysis of Edinburgh 1910 and the Lausanne movement

Pruitt, Harold Edward 06 1900 (has links)
Ecumenism and Theological Convergence: A Comparative Analysis of Edinburgh 1910 and the Lausanne Movement." This thesis evaluates the Edinburgh 1910 World Mission Conference, the ecumenism that flowed from Edinburgh 1910, and its relationship to the ecumenical trends that exist within the Lausanne movement. Additionally, this thesis determines how ecumenism has attributed to a theological convergence, and then examines the impact of such theological convergence on the global church through parachurch organizations. It begins by laying the foundation for any theological convergence that existed at Edinburgh 1910. It then examines ecumenism within the Lausanne movement, theological significance of ecumenism, and its impact on the global church. Finally, the thesis explores the theological convergence within select parachurch organizations since Lausanne 1974 and analyzes the impact of theological convergence on the global church. The researcher of this thesis has surveyed several sources to determine the originality of this topic through search engines World Cat, World Cat Dissertations, Dissertations, Article First, ATLA Religion, Humanities Index, Humanities Abstract, Christian Periodical Index, Worldscope, and also significant works about Lausanne 1974. The search revealed nothing substantial concerning Lausanne’s impact on the Global Church through parachurch organizations, the researcher deems this thesis to be an original work. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. 雙邊國際貿易公司商業計劃書 / Business Plan of a Binational Trade Company

Breitenmoser, Peter Unknown Date (has links)
This business plan is written for a to-be-founded trade company which focuses on the trade between Taiwan and Switzerland. The environmental analysis (Chapter 4) shows that there are countless opportunities for trade between the two countries. The goal of the company is to find products and solutions with considerable potential. Therefore, this business plan does not focus on just one product; instead a process defines how the company selects and develops the products in its portfolio (Chapter 3). By making these products available in the other country, the company gives Taiwanese and Swiss manufacturers new business opportunities and gives the potential customers better and different solutions to their problems. The company’s goal is to build long-term partnerships with its suppliers in order to ensure a high level of quality (Chapter 5). The company will set up two logistic centers, one in Taiwan and one in Switzerland, which will be the hubs for standardized and efficient distribution processes (Chapter 7). In order to keep the costs low during the first years, marketing and sales (Chapters 8 and 9) will focus most of its activities on B2C products which are mainly sold through ecommerce activities. Finally, the financial forecasts (Chapter 10) show that there is a very high level of uncertainties for the financial success of the company. Therefore the cost structure of the company must be highly flexible to be adjustable to the company’s growth.

The "identity-balance" in a foreign country as shown in selected texts, taken from immigrant literature in Germany and Switzerland.

Thore, Petra January 2004 (has links)
The central concern of this thesis is to investigate the development of the personal identity of the main characters in four novels, a novella, and a short-story, written in German by authors from different countries who have immigrated to post World War II Germany and Switzerland. Earlier research concerning these identity processes is reviewed with emphasis on the relevance of the different theoretical models of development of personal identity used. A model called “identity-balance”, first described by the German sociologist Lothar Krappmann, is used in analysing the changes in personal identity. This model is preferred because of Krappmann’s strong emphasis on interaction, process, and openness. Based upon the results of the interpretations a modification of Krappmann’s model is suggested in order to better shed light upon identity processes following migration. As languages are shown to play a great role in these processes, aspects concerned with multilingualism and the part languages play in the “identity-balance” are discussed throughout the thesis. The textual interpretations reveal the connection between three lines of change: changes in personal identity, changes in society following migration, and changes in the field of literature.

Lalande, Yvon 01 1900 (has links)
The following thesis is an organizational analysis of the recent development of television in Switzerland, French Belgium and Québec. The main interactions between different television organisations of these three societies are studied to understand how each of them coped with the very important increase of television channels that most of the industrialized countries have encountered in the last twenty-five years or so. This organizational study is based upon the following principle: one may more easily grasp the specifics of a given society when it is compared to similar specifics of other societies. By considering the development of television as a social itinerary in each of these three societies, it becomes possible to see how values, interests, coalitions as well as conflicts played a vital role in a new multi-channels television environment. In so doing, the inevitable comparison between Canadian and American television so often made in Canada is avoided. The gap is so big between these two countries that, for once, it is worth using units of comparisons of about the same size. At the end of this study, it becomes clear that regulatory bodies in each of the three societies set out policies and guidelines to strongly encourage more existing television channels. Accordingly, a certain convergence between these three societies does exist and the popular belief that a given market was left to itself in a new television environment cannot be no longer sustained. However, if there are some elements of convergence, elements of divergence are much more important. In Switzerland, the increase of television channels was made in an orderly manner since consensus between all kinds of organizations is a vital part of Swiss way of life. In Belgium, since conflicts are the fundamentals of the everyday life among political parties, cultural and linguistic communities, oppositions remained very important in this increase of television channels. However, one must recognize as an end result that, surprisingly, the whole television environment stays rather stable. Québec had a development of its own. CRTC, the Canadian regulatory body, is mainly responsible for an overdevelopment of Québec television since the television environment in Québec counts a surprisingly high number of television channels for such a small industrialized society. The whole thing was deliberately planned by CRTC as an answer to an everlasting Canadian fear: an American cultural invasion, a “danger” that yet has to be proven. However, this overdevelopment of television did not come with increased resources to support so many television channels. Québec television offers too much with too little. This might explain a certain loss of quality observed in Québec television over the recent years. Things would probably be much easier if, for once, Québec television was considered for what it is: a small television in a highly developed and industrialized world. If that kind of consideration goes without saying in Switzerland and Belgium, it still is not the case in Québec.

Wyss, Antonin 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis proposes a study of the musical programming of Radio Suisse Romande (RSR) in the 1930s. The first chapter of the work recalls the beginnings of radio in the world and shows the different steps that led to the creation of a public service broadcasting in Switzerland and its early years of development. The second chapter examines the construction of program schedules on the air and looks at the roles and implications of the different actors involved in the development of music programs at the time: programmers, musicians and listeners. The third chapter is a statistical study based on a sample of music programs broadcast between 1930 and 1939. In making a classification of recorded music programs and the identification of different authors/composers present in broadcasts, we propose a typology of programs and composers. The study is illustrated by several sound archives.

Commitment and identity : the antifascists activists of Freies Deutschland from the western exile (Belgium, France and Switzerland) to the 1970’s GDR (1943-1975)

Heiniger, Alix 18 June 2012 (has links)
This PHD dissertation studies the activists of the organisations Freies Deutschland (FD) in Belgium, France and Switzerland during the Second World War. Reproducing the model of the Nationalkomitee « Freies Deutschland », founded in Moscow in July 1943 by German communists and prisoners of war, they tried to gather Nazi regime opponents in Western Europe. The dissertation analyses the political engagement of these activists with the help of a biographical methodological approach. The commitment of these actors changed during the Liberation in Belgium and France and until spring 1945 in Switzerland. The identity theytried to give themselves also changed when they adopted a discourse more concentrated on their nation and its reconstruction. Finally, after the war and their return in East and West Germany, the SED asked them to write their story in exile to support the official discourse on antifascism. This gave them an occasion to promote their political experience, which was neglected by the party after the war. They produced a memorial narrative on western antifascism.
