The Adoption of Shamanic Healing into the Biomedical Health Care System in the United States

Thayer, Lori L. 01 May 2009 (has links)
Following cultural anthropological inquiry, this dissertation examines the adoption of shamanic healing techniques into Western medicine and the resultant hybrid modality of health care fostered by two disparate healing traditions. As the U.S. populace increasingly turns to alternative forms of healing in conjunction with, or in lieu of, conventional Western medicine, shamanic healing has been added to the list of recognized non-conventional therapies. Shamanism, once prevalent throughout most of the world in various cultural forms, is purported to be the oldest healing modality, dating back to the Upper Paleolithic in Siberia. Historical excoriation and extermination from religious and political dogma have plagued shamanic cultures for centuries while their healing practices have been rebuked by Western concepts emergent from the Scientific Revolution--whereupon the Cartesian Split and a corporeal view of the body transformed the field of medicine. In the United States, over the last decade, a new and growing subculture of health care practitioners, including "Western" educated medical practitioners, is seeking out shamanic training for personal and professional development. This study examines how the adoption of a healing paradigm borne out of indigenous cultures oriented toward communal living and local economies is adapted to a Western culture steeped in individualism, commercialization, and commodification. Through surveys, interviews, and ethnographic research, the investigator provides numerous examples and analysis of the practice of shamanic healing techniques in medical clinics, health care centers, and hospitals. In particular, this study will focus on the shamanic training of health care practitioners, their motivations, the manner in which they incorporate shamanic healing techniques into their treatment protocols, as well as patient/colleague/administrative responses and institutional barriers. A comparative analysis provides discussion on both the metamorphosis of shamanic healing traditions appropriated within a biomedical framework as well as the influence of spiritually-based healing practices upon the established medical culture in the United States today. Through the lens of highlighted individual experiences, the investigator offers insight into an emerging hybrid healing modality embedded in cultural contrasts that also serves as a catalyst for the renegotiation of the meaning of healing.

This research aimed at studying the text on the computer screen in its syncretic-discursive aspects. The empirical objects consisted in the analysis of blogs produced in pedagogical activities of a project work in hypermedia, in the context of teaching and learning English as a foreign/additional language. The study was theoretically and methodologically based on discursive greimasian semiotics. From the dyad expression/content and the concept of inter-semiotic function, the expression plane of the blogs was analyzed through the conjunction of plastics semiotics and elements of visual design, and the content plan was analyzed at the discursive level of the generative route of signification. The comparison of the observed data encouraged a discussion of the meanings produced and verified the occurrence of semi-symbolism. The recurrence of semi-symbolism confirmed the sincreticity characteristic of the blogs textuality in the hypertext context. The discursive, verbal and nonverbal choices made by the students indicated the convergence of meaning effects and the repetition of the themes and figures listed. The multiplicity of elements found in the construction of the semiotic discourse seems to characterize the syncretic textuality in hypertext environment, so that the verbal language embeds features of the nonverbal language and vice versa. The analysis showed that the textual production in computerized environment requires another conception of text and language education, including digital literacy associated with language literacy in the curricular syllabus of elementary school. The possibilities of hypertext, in its syncretic textuality, showed having not only influenced but also delimited the linguistic-discursive choices made in the context of textual production in hypermedia. Working with hypertext seems to pose challenges to language teaching and school textual practices, as it requires the participants in the educational process to deal with a wider range of communication options, explicated in the categories proposed for the analysis of blogs. Unlike the first developments in the early semiotic theory, hypertext turned semi-symbolism into rule, not into an exception obtained as a result of specific discursive-semiotic choices.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:15:13Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Alexandre Provin Sbabo.pdf: 1962876 bytes, checksum: aaa8f5ada5e971040d430b8b1e23c747 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-06-03 / This research examines the soundtrack and the syncretic elements, responsible for the meaning of jingles. What role these elements play in relation mainly to the persuasive function and assignment meaning of the message proposal? This is the main question of this research. The prominent position and the function of these components in the advertising are indicators of the importance of this study, investigated based on semiotic theories and theories of musical melody, arrangement, composition and harmony. Unifying the semiotic and musical elements, we seek therefore to identify the means used and the patterns that are able to explain the persuasive gains that advertising acquires in jingles. The semiotic analysis has its basis in the work of Charles Sanders Peirce, because his classifications of signs enable accurate reading of mixtures between text, image and sound in jingles. We also use the greimasian discursive semiotics and tensive semiotics, marked by Luiz Tatit, because it is a work that brings important contributions to musical semiotics. Music theorists are also triggered to unravel, in the jingle, their musical structures, such as arrangement, melody, harmonic field, etc. The corpus of research is the campaign developed by the company PA Publicidade, produced by Conspiração Filmes and composed by Panela Produtora, to the Pão de Açúcar Group, with the participation of the singer Clarice Falcão, because it is a series of intersemiotics jingles both aired on television and Internet, and the company have aimed exclusively jingles to your online channel / Esta pesquisa examina a trilha musical e os elementos sincréticos, responsáveis pelo sentido, dos jingles publicitários.

RECOMPOSIÇÕES IDENTITÁRIAS NA INTEGRAÇÃO RELIGIOSA E CULTURAL DA IGREJA MESSIÂNICA NO BRASIL / Identity Recompositions in the Religious and Cultural Integration of Sekai Kyusei Kyo in Brazil

Tomita, Andréa Gomes Santiago 06 March 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-03T12:20:52Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Andrea Gomes Santiago Tomita.pdf: 1344594 bytes, checksum: 5129868393317f15beaf8dcbceb68acb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-06 / The present study is based on the analysis of the religious and cultural integration of the Sekai Kyusei Kyo in Brazil (called Igreja Messiânica Mundial do Brasil in Portuguese) and its identity recomposition. The exploration of its symbolic world is considered as one of the key to understand messianity identity. The emblem of Sekai Kyusei Kyo (SKK) is the symbol of cross culture and harmony among different people. In Brazil, especially the Guarapiranga Sacred Ground is the expression of Paradise on Earth, the major goal of the messianity message from the SKK. Due to its distinctive nature as a religion of Japanese background, little familiar to Brazilians, some constituent trends (native, shamanic, people s beliefs, Shinto, Confucian and Hindu-Buddhist ones) as well as messianic concepts considering their relevance in the process of constructing the Brazilian messianity identity were presented. According to the nature of concepts, a comparative view on the SKK and other new japanese religions (NJR) such as Mahikari, Perfect Liberty, Seicho-no-Ie and Tenri-kyo had been selected. Regarding reincarnation, a compared view with Spiritism made possible some proximity with Brazilian religiosity. From historical contextualization and the use of the messianic nomenclature, the ideas of kotodama or spirit of the word , ultra-r eligion , purification and disease , material benefits , self-cultivation as well as several dimensions of the Brazilian religious experience, such as ecological, inter-religious, artistic and messianity in the word s strict meaning, were worked on. The idea of an ultra-religion by Meishu-Sama (religious name of Mokichi Okada, 1882-1955) must be understood under the viewpoint of the path of the consolidation of a religion in a special context of Japan in the beginning of the 20th century. Before establishing the messianic religion, Okada passed through art, business, publishing, and finally ideological and religious when he contacted the Omoto religion and other religious expressions, which multiplied fast and in great amount in Japan between the two world wars. The dynamic process of the interaction of different trends, which is a characteristic of the NJR, in contact with Brazilian religiosity gives impulse to a series of Japanese-Brazilian syncretic ressignification, marked by unique creative processes. The stress on the Messiah Meishu-Sama, the Practice of Sonen and the establishment of a messianic theology are some of the fundamental elements of the most recent identity recomposition of the religion in Brazil. Due to the successive changes of the institutional approaches as well as to the multiple dimensions of messianic experience, the identity construction of the SKK, which comprises religious and ultra-religious aspects, becomes more and more complex and multifaced.(AU) / Esta pesquisa fundamenta-se na análise da integração religiosa e cultural da Igreja Messiânica Mundial (IMM) no Brasil e suas recomposições identitárias.

Recherche participante / Group framework and nested worlds in adult training or young adults; Trainers facing attacks on the framework. Participating Research

Falla, Willy 10 December 2010 (has links)
When the interpreting function instituting of the team is operative, the attack on the framework in institution, seems an attempt to interiorize, starting from the experiment of confrontation to the institutional device, the framework understood a preconception unsaturated with the direction as Bion has it. By taking again the developments relating to the role of the counter-transference in the individual cure and by establishing an analogy between the couple transference - counter-transference, dialectical between asymmetry and solidarity characterizes the psychoanalytical device. A close link is established between the investment by the analyst of this dialectical and the share of the counter-transference expressed in the report of the analyst to the psychoanalytical framework. After having checked the possibility of extending these developments to the formative relation, the group and the institution, an analogy was postulated between inter-transference and counter-transference relative with the investment of this dialectical between asymmetry and solidarity. A failure of the inter-tranferential analysis induced by a blocking of dialectical asymmetry - solidarity will be at the origin of actings on behalf of the team. This blocking appears in the movement inter - tranferential investing the dimension of asymmetry at the expense of the dimension of solidarity. This dimension of solidarity indeed makes it possible to accomodate what comes from the other and to assume the complex relations of fitment subjacent with the intersubjective bond. These theoretical assumptions were put at work within a research action with a team of trainers to professional animation.

Analysis of semiotic situations in informational documents within the company : focus on some EDF (Electricité de France) communication documents

Konate, Souleymane 10 April 2014 (has links)
Entitled “Analysis of semiotic situations in informational documents within the company: focus on some EDF (Electricité de France) communication documents”, this doctorate research thesis is a study which particularly concerns the field of Practical Semiotics. A communicative production can be regarded as a Practice (in this case, a language act, a discourse whose aim is to provoke an action or a reaction in the addressees). It is actually provided with a heterogeneous configuration that includes a set of elements necessary for the production and interpretation of its meaning. The aim of our study is to analyze this configuration also called Semiotic Situation, and to highlight the most relevant aspects that can be observed in two levels or scenes: predicative and strategies scenes. We specifically focused on the following strategies: selection, adaptation, adjustment, coordination and programmed organization of Practice elements. The analysis focused particularly on some communication documents of EDF Group. This is an external institutional communication. Situated between semiotics of images and institutional semiotics, this thesis can also be considered as a semiotic study of a means of communication. The theme was on dismantling nuclear power plants, management and processing of radioactive waste, environmental commitments, new products, activities and services of EDF. This whole topic is related to the production and marketing of electricity (energy) and the issues they raise. The corpus under study made up of non confidential documents at the reach of the general public is divided into two parts: we have firstly some paper documents, and secondly, we have electronic documents (EDF website graphical interfaces which contain two video sequences). In line with our research, we carried out analysis and meditations with the aim of knowing what significant structures mobilize the act of communication that make up the corpus under study. This corpus as a Practice contains strategic organisation and adjustments found on several levels amongst which are material and sensitive properties, enunciative and the rhetorical-argumentative styles. Our research focused on three main parts. The first is a presentation of the target company and the specification of the communication context of the corpus. After presenting the company EDF and discussing the concept of energy, the different sources of electricity generated by EDF, we looked at the economic, competitive, social and safety issues that the company must consider. The second part gave an analytical semiotic description of the corpus. This was also the part where we discussed the components of external communication which belongs corpus. The third part is divided into three chapters that analyze the semiotic and rhetorical-argumentative concepts used. An analysis of Semiotic Situation requires a singular examination of syncretic, enunciative and rhetorical aspects. This thesis reveals crucial elements in the production and interpretation of meaning in of a communication act. It contributes to the understanding and improvement of communicative efficiency. It is a model of applied semiotics
