On-Board Memory Extension on Reconfigurable Integrated Circuits using External DDR3 Memory: On-Board Memory Extension on Reconfigurable Integrated Circuits usingExternal DDR3 Memory

Lodaya, Bhaveen 08 February 2018 (has links)
User-programmable, integrated circuits (ICs) e.g. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are increasingly popular for embedded, high-performance data exploitation. They combine the parallelization capability and processing power of application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) with the exibility, scalability and adaptability of software-based processing solutions. FPGAs provide powerful processing resources due to an optimal adaptation to the target application and a well-balanced ratio of performance, efficiency and parallelization. One drawback of FPGA-based data exploitation is the limited memory capacity of reconfigurable integrated circuits. Large-scale Digital Signal Processor (DSP) FPGAs provide approximately 4MB on-board random access memory (RAM) which is not sufficient to buffer the broadband sensor and result data. Hence, additional external memory is connected to the FPGA to increase on-board storage capacities. External memory devices like double data rate three synchronous dynamic random access memories (DDR3-SDRAM) provide very fast and wide bandwidth interfaces that represent a bottleneck when used in highly parallelized processing architectures. Independent processing modules are demanding concurrent read and write access. Within the master thesis, a concept for the integration of an external DDR3- SDRAM into an FPGA-based parallelized processing architecture is developed and implemented. The solution realizes time division multiple access (TDMA) to the external memory and virtual, low-latency memory extension to the on-board buffer capabilities. The integration of the external RAM does not change the way how on-board buffers are used (control, data-fow).

Ali, Mohamad Jaafar 09 September 2017 (has links)
(...) / A Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is a short-range network that consists of a coordinator (Crd) and a collection of low-power sensors that can be implanted in or attached to the human body. Basically, WBANs can provide real-time patient monitoring and serve in various applications such as ubiquitous health-care, consumer electronics, military, sports, etc. [1]. As the license-free 2.4 GHz ISM band is widely used among WBANs and across other wireless technologies, the fundamental problem is to mitigate the resulting co-channel interference. Other serious problems are to extend the network lifetime and to ensure reliable transmission within WBANs, which is an urgent requirement for health-care applications. Therefore, in this thesis, we conduct a systematic research on a few number of research problems related to radio co-channel interference, energy consumption, and network reliability. Specifically, we address the following problems ranging from theoretical modeling and analysis to practical protocol design: • Intra-WBAN interference mitigation and avoidance • Cooperative inter-WBAN interference mitigation and avoidance • Non-cooperative inter-WBAN interference mitigation and avoidance • Interference mitigation and avoidance in WBANs with IoT Firstly, to mitigate the intra-WBAN interference, we present two mechanisms for a WBAN. The first is called CSMA to Flexible TDMA combination for Interference Mitigation, namely, CFTIM, which dynamically allocates time-slots and stable channels to lower the intra-WBAN interference. The second is called Interference Avoidance Algorithm, namely IAA that dynamically adjusts the superframe length and limits the number of channels to 2 to lower the intra-WBAN interference and save energy. Theoretically, we derive a probabilistic model that proves the SINR outage probability is lowered. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the efficiency of CFTIM and IAA in terms of lowering the probability of interference, extending network lifetime, improving throughput and reliability. Secondly, we address the problem of interference among cooperative WBANs through using orthogonal codes. Motivated by distributed time provisioning supported in IEEE 802.15.6 standard [2], we propose two schemes. The first is called Distributed Time Correlation Reference, namely, DTRC that provides each WBAN with the knowledge about which superframes overlap with each other. The second is called Orthogonal Code Allocation Algorithm for Interference Mitigation, namely, OCAIM, that allocates orthogonal codes to interfering sensors belonging to sensor interference lists (SILs), which are generated based on the exchange of power-based information among WBANs. Mathematically, we derive the successful and collision probabilities of frames transmissions. Extensive simulations are conducted and the results demonstrate that OCAIM can diminish the interference, improve the throughput and save the power resource. Thirdly, we address the problem of co-channel interference among non-cooperative WBANs through time-slot and channel hopping. Specifically, we propose two schemes that are based on Latin rectangles. The first is called Distributed Algorithm for Interference mitigation using Latin rectangles, namely, DAIL that allocates a single channel to a timeslot combination to each sensor to diminish inter-WBAN interference and to yield better schedules of the medium access within each WBAN. The second is called Channel Hopping for Interference Mitigation, namely, CHIM, which generates a predictable interference free transmission schedule for all sensors within a WBAN. CHIM applies the channel switching only when a sensor experiences interference to save the power resource. Furthermore, we present an analytical model that derives bounds on collision probability and throughput for sensors transmissions. (...)

Implementation and performance analysis of multiple concurrent WPAN protocols on a system-on-chip

Hag, Juni January 2022 (has links)
The development of new energy efficient Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) protocols is a big factor for the increased interest in Internet of Things (IoT). However, the many protocols with overlapping applications have led to competing standards and sensor networks using different protocols, even to perform the same tasks. If different sensors in IoT uses different protocols in the same area, a single gateway connecting to all of them must support all their protocols simultaneously. This thesis studies latency, average sending time and range for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), 802.15.4 and Zigbee in multiprotocol mode on the nRF52840 System on Chip (SoC). In addition, an 802.15.4-based protocol synchronizing with the BLE frames using Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) techniques was designed and implemented. This protocol could be used in sensor networks using both the BLE and 802.15.4 protocols to assure the 802.15.4-based devices will not try to transmit during the periods the gateway is busy with other communications.

To Determine Networked Telemetry Resynchronization Time

Laird, Daniel T. 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2011 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Seventh Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2011 / Bally's Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada / The Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program (CTEIP) Integrated Network Enhanced Telemetry (iNET) program is currently testing networked telemetry transceivers (IP.TM-Tx/Rx) using the Internet Protocol (IP), for use in telemetry (TM) channels. A unique characteristic of networked telemetry channel is packet drops due to radio frequency (RF) signal dynamics, i.e., terrain, weather, aircraft attitude, manmade objects, etc.. One of the key measures of the IP.TMTx/ Rx is reliability is link availability (LA), and a key element of LA is time to resynchronize after RF link loss.

Thevenin, Mathieu 16 October 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Predictable and Scalable Medium Access Control for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

Sjöberg Bilstrup, Katrin January 2009 (has links)
<p>This licentiate thesis work investigates two medium access control (MAC) methods, when used in traffic safety applications over vehicular <em>ad hoc</em> networks (VANETs). The MAC methods are carrier sense multiple access (CSMA), as specified by the leading standard for VANETs IEEE 802.11p, and self-organizing time-division multiple access (STDMA) as used by the leading standard for transponders on ships. All vehicles in traffic safety applications periodically broadcast cooperative awareness messages (CAMs). The CAM based data traffic implies requirements on a predictable, fair and scalable medium access mechanism. The investigated performance measures are <em>channel access delay</em>, <em>number of consecutive packet drops</em> and the <em>distance between concurrently transmitting nodes</em>. Performance is evaluated by computer simulations of a highway scenario in which all vehicles broadcast CAMs with different update rates and packet lengths. The obtained results show that nodes in a CSMA system can experience <em>unbounded channel access delays</em> and further that there is a significant difference between the best case and worst case channel access delay that a node could experience. In addition, with CSMA there is a very high probability that several <em>concurrently transmitting nodes are located close to each other</em>. This occurs when nodes start their listening periods at the same time or when nodes choose the same backoff value, which results in nodes starting to transmit at the same time instant. The CSMA algorithm is therefore both <em>unpredictable</em> and <em>unfair</em> besides the fact that it <em>scales badly</em> for broadcasted CAMs. STDMA, on the other hand, will always grant channel access for all packets before a predetermined time, regardless of the number of competing nodes. Therefore, the STDMA algorithm is <em>predictable</em> and <em>fair</em>. STDMA, using parameter settings that have been adapted to the vehicular environment, is shown to outperform CSMA when considering the performance measure <em>distance between concurrently transmitting nodes</em>. In CSMA the distance between concurrent transmissions is random, whereas STDMA uses the side information from the CAMs to properly schedule concurrent transmissions in space. The price paid for the superior performance of STDMA is the required network synchronization through a global navigation satellite system, e.g., GPS. That aside since STDMA was shown to be scalable, predictable and fair; it is an excellent candidate for use in VANETs when complex communication requirements from traffic safety applications should be met.</p>

Οι πιο διαδεδομένες τεχνικές είναι οι FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access), TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) και CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) . / Main goal of this diploma thesis is the description of the up and coming PLC (PowerLine Communication) technology. This technology offers access to the web and to several broadband services to even distant and isolated users, by exploiting the power line grid, widely spread to nearly all surface land sites, consisting this way a competitive communication alternative. For a better comprehension of the PLC technology, this work starts with a detailed description of the power line grid, the several PLC technology architectures and the necessary equipment for their application. Following this work, there is a reference to any possible problems that need to be overcome and a short comparative presentation of the PLC technology versus other alternatives to it. The data transmission over electricity lines offers a wide bandwidth and thus it may support a variety of applications, as the smart home and AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) for the proper service of either domestic or industrial users. The use of electricity power lines as a communication channel necessitates the application of multiple access Strategies as FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access), TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), which are currently the most popular. This thesis is focused on TDMA and FDMA with OFDM signal modulation. This technique is called OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access). Several proportional rate constraints algorithms were simulated in Matlab applying both OFDMA and TDMA strategies in order to compare these algorithms in terms of the maximized total throughput and the fair allocation of resources to the end users (fairness). From this comparison it comes up that TDMA technique is less efficient, whereas from the other algorithms the most efficient is the one of Bill et al., that offers a good balance between total throughput and fairness.

For that purpose, traffic models based on the Kernel method and the MMFM with adjusted autocorrelation function are proposed. From the model implemented for the OFDM-TDMA system, it was derived equations for estimation of QoS parameters such as delay and average queue size in the buffer. The obtained results confirm that the proposed model is efficient in describing the link performance indicators. The use of MMFM to model the arrival process improves the QoS parameter estimates of the queueing model making their values very close to those of the simulation results. It was also developed an equation to the OFDMTDMA system’s service curve. Through this equation and the concept of Envelope Process, it was proposed an equation to estimate the probability of buffer overflow in OFDM-TDMA systems. The results show that the estimates of the overflow probability based on the system’s service curve are very close to the ones obtained by simulations and that the computational complexity to obtain them is significantly reduced compared to the model based on Markov Chains due to the absence of matrix computation.
