Silveira, Sandra Beatriz Morais da January 2004 (has links)
This study approaches a case study based on an educational experience conducted by an a non govemmental organization (NGO) called Themis, whose aim is to promote, defend and protect women's rights, recognizing the Judicial Power as the strategically privileged space for accomplishing a project aiming at women's social justice. This research was conducted with a group of women whose racial identities include black, white and indigenous women residing in Canoas and Porto Alegre, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. They are ali community leaders, who have concluded the Popular Legal Prosecutors (PLPs) preparation course, which was coordinated by the Juridical and Gender Studies Support from Themis-NGO. The period studied began in 1996 until 2000, when the racial issue was included in the PLPs formation course. The fundaments of this theoretical/empirical research belong to the studies on gender, race and popular education, with emphasis on the concept of social exclusion. From this angle, social exclusion presents increasing obstacles towards the access of goods and social services resulting from the social production of wealth. The exclusion processes affect social groups in different ways, with higher or lower degree contact with exclusion, revealing itself to be extremely cruel, and the more extensive, the more the race, gender and social class overlap I have worked aiming at acquiring, from the PLPs point of view, a better understanding at whether the inclusion of the racial topic towards their formation, contributes or not to the construction of their racial identities and to their social and political practices, while being multipliers of citizenship and women's rights defense_ lt is important to highlight that this study refers to a five-year length experience. However, Themis - Juridical Assistance and Gender Studies - has been developing a pedagogical practice for ten years with popular groups at the county, state and national leveis_ The educational experience is a well used and recurrent resource being used by social movements and NGOs, as a way of supplying for the State's absence in assisting the complete citizenship construction of ali Brazilians. Therefore, this a pedagogical project aiming at making the phenomenon of racism, and the existing patronizing phenomenon in Brazilian society evident, and thus, rescuing or reconstructing racial, gender and social class relationships, based on respect to differences and on universal access to human rights, as well as goods and services to every one.

The Origins of Four Paterae of Malea Planum, Mars

Larson, Susan K. 14 March 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Malea Planum is a volcanic plain on the southern rim of Hellas Planitia, the largest impact basin on Mars. Four large circular structures on Malea Planum have traditionally been identified as paterae, or low relief, central vent volcanoes (Plescia and Saunders, 1979). A geologic map was constructed and new crater counts made to explore the ages and origins of the paterae. Amphitrites and Peneus Paterae have radial patterns of wrinkle ridges on their flanks and distinct summit calderas (95 km and 130 km across) with arcuate bounding scarps. In contrast, Malea and Pityusa Paterae are broad depressions with diameters greater than 400 km. In some ways Pityusa and Malea Paterae resemble old, filled impact craters (Plescia, 2003) but they also have characteristics of volcanic subsidence features (Roche et al., 2000). A very strong positive gravity anomaly is centered over Amphitrites and smaller positive anomalies are associated with Peneus and Malea Paterae. A slight annular positive anomaly is associated with Pityusa. The geology of the Malea Planum Region has been influenced by impact cratering, volcanic, tectonic, fluvial, and most recently, eolian processes. The Noachian was dominated by impact cratering, the formation of Hellas Basin, and the eruption of flood lavas. Malea Planum formed during the mid- to late-Noachian, likely the result of sills liquefying the volatile-rich crust. Malea and Pityusa Paterae formed during the late Noachian. The Hesperian was marked by the formation of Peneus and Amphitrites and complex valley networks. During the mid-Hesperian, southern Malea Planum may have been covered by a very thick polar mantle deposit that melted and sublimated during the late Hesperian. Smaller episodes of polar mantle deposition continued through the Amazonian to the present. The Amazonian is also characterized by eolian activity creating dune fields, etched surfaces, and dust devil tracks. Based on the topographic and geophysical evidence, Amphitrites and Peneus are typical highland paterae. We conclude that a mid-crustal sill complex similar to that thought to exist beneath the eastern Snake River Plain in Idaho may be the best explanation for the formation of Malea and Pityusa Paterae. A lack of associated flow features on the surface suggests that the loads are the result of an accumulation of dense intrusions. A surficial load (e.g., lava flows) is insufficient to cause the amount of subsidence observed. A mid-crustal mafic or ultra-mafic sill or a dense network of sills and dikes may have contributed to the subsidence.

Costa, César Vergara de Almeida Martins 29 October 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-05T17:20:08Z (GMT). The main objective of the present dissertation is the affirmation of the Law as “scripture”, which is, at same time, transgressor and conservative of the juridical tradition. In order to state so, one has to approach the Law to the Literature, more precisely investigating the relations that have been established between the Greek tragedy and the Law. This way, one has to investigate the general panorama in which the studies that approximate law and literature (and vice-versa) are inserted, and the Aristotelic poetics is visited in order to allow the gender and the tragic man characteristics to be examined. Basic concepts of the ancient Grece are herewith investigated – such as physis, ethos, nomos, hamartia, hybris, themis e diké – as well as the passage of the pre-law structures to the law itself which are unveiled in the Greek myths and, consequently, in the tragic gender based on studies signed by Louis Gernet and Vernant. Identified since the Aristotelic poetics, the mimesis inserted into Literature, and
