The Importance of Dignity : A Kantian Perspective on Transhumanism

Hjelm, Alexander January 2018 (has links)
The transhumanist movement has been hailed as optimistic and forward thinking in itsambition to “ascend humanity beyond its biological constraints” and bring it to the next stageof evolution. However, critics such as Nicholas Le Dévédec have claimed that the movementrepresents a reversal of the Enlightenment project of autonomy, despite claims otherwise. Inthis paper, we shall adopt the perspective of the moral philosophy of an Enlightenmentthinker important for the democratic thought of the era: Immanuel Kant. With an emphasis onKant’s conception of Dignity and the second formulation of the categorical imperative, thestudy shows that Kantianism is irreconcilable with transhumanism. The findings not onlyexpand upon Dévédec’s claims, but also emphasizes the potential of dignity as a concept indelineating the limits and use of enhancement technology.

The Role of Vision in Attributing the Sense of Part- and Full-Body Ownership During Anomalous Conditions

Savallampi, Mattias January 2015 (has links)
Our bodies are arguably one of the most intimate things we will ever know. But the comfort of our own physical boundaries can be altered in various ways. In this analysis, we will look at how vision contributes to the sense of owning a body by analysing six abnormal conditions: the rubber hand illusion, phantom limbs, somatoparaphrenia, the body-swap illusion, out-of-body experiences, and heautoscopy. Examinations of these experimental or pathological conditions has granted a greater understanding of body-ownership. It was discovered that vision plays different modulatory roles, being more intricately involved in full-body ownership than in part-body ownership. Vision appears to be highly connected to self-location and first-person perspective, which both are contributing factors in projecting the sense of ownership to an external location. In part-body ownership, however, vision can be overruled by other senses, such as proprioception. Though it is still able to contribute to the illusion of projecting ownership and proprioceptive displacement to a rubber hand.

Art et science : nouveau langage dans l'exploration du monde / Art & Science : a new language in the exploration of the world

Chernetska, Alla 22 April 2017 (has links)
Art and science are parallel ways to know the world, even if each one uses its own means. Having different approaches, these two ways are in search of the invisible, of what is beyond the first perception of reality, in order to discover new real phenomena. The current collaborations between artists and scientists have led me to investigate new approaches to reality, which these collaborative projects can bring to Humanity. Discovering the Art & Science field, I asked myself if the approaches and the methods that have been considered as incompatible for a long time are now converging into a common language being created at the frontier of art and science. Our research is based on several testimonials from artists and from scientists who participated in collaborative projects. Through the various collaborations, we analysed, on one hand, the shared viewpoints of artists and scientists, and, on the other hand, the difficulties they had to overcome to achieve the desired result. Art & Science being a recent field, many questions are raised. This thesis focuses on the essence and the aims of collaborations between artists and scientists in order to understand the specificity of Art & Science projects and to see how these projects may impact society.

Ghiringhelli, Adèle 08 1900 (has links)
Popular technology for some and field of scientific research for others, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an ideological project above all: shaping an artificial creature "in the image of Man" (Breton, 1995). However, the media's enthusiasm for AI reflects a debate that focuses exclusively on the opportunities it generates and the issues it raises. Essential to the understanding of the social phenomenon, the sociological study of the evolution of this ideological project constitutes a gap that this thesis intends to fill. The aim is to establish on what conception of the human being and his intelligence this project has developed. This research work focuses on the representations of intelligence conveyed by media discourses focused on AI. Analyzing the social representations of intelligence from a constructivist perspective not only allows us to better understand the social phenomenon that is AI, but also sheds light on the vision of the human being that it implies. We will try to demonstrate how AI has been developed on the basis of a reductive representation of Man and his intelligence without ever mentioning the foundations hidden on the edges of social representations. Especially since this "epistemic pauperism" (Robillard, 2019: 3) is not without effect: real scientific choices result from it, leading to the launch of concrete applications that guide and transform our daily lives. That is why a thorough reflection is required. This thesis thus aims to point out social interests affected by technocratic instrumental rationality.

Overcoming the Human Condition : An Arendtian analysis of the antipolitical tendencies in transhumanism

Hjelm, Alexander January 2020 (has links)
This article critically analyses transhumanism, an ideological movement that advocates the radical biomodification of the human body in order to overcome our deficiencies and progress towards our next phase in evolution. Following previous criticism against the depoliticization within transhumanism, the article will aim to highlight the difficulty within transhumanism to balance the respect for diversity against the imperative for human enhancement. This paper then turns to the political theory of Hannah Arendt as the theoretical lens to highlight the source of this tension as the ideology’s reductive view of politics. The paper concludes on the difficulties reconciling diversity with human enhancement, as well as raising awareness of the possibility of conscious action in concert related to the use of biomodification technologies advocated by transhumanists.

Transient Delete: Original Composition with a Critical Examination of the Compositional Process and a Survey of Digital Technology in Opera

Shirey, Benjamin, 1985- 05 1900 (has links)
This paper explores various technologies available to the modern composer and utilized in recent modern opera, providing creative approaches to producing aural, visual, and theatrical performance environments. It also explores my own use of digital technology in Transient Delete. Transient Delete is a digital miniature-opera that explores different aspects of a community of post-human cyborgs. The story follows Iméra, a newly converted cyborg as she acclimates herself to this new cybernetic existence. During this process she meets several other cybernetic entities that are there to help guide her through her metamorphosis.

Transhumanismus a reflexivní plánování a zvládání. / Transhumanism and reflexive planning and managing

Macoun, Miroslav January 2021 (has links)
in English My thesis follows up a potential influence of transhumanism on reflexive planning of people according to a Czech transhumanist community in regard of Person-In-Enviroment theory and postmodern changes in the society. A conceptual part contains chapters about transhumanism, areas that transhumanism focuses on, H+ technologies, potential, community and reflexive planning. In a framework of a qualitative research, my data were gathered using semi-structured interviews on topics reflexivity of an human actor, decision making, work with information, power, existential dimension of life and sorrow and anxiety related to life changes and loses. According to the obtained tata the biggest potential for reflexive planning can be found in examining possibilities of using artificial inteligence, collective consciousness and virtual hedonism, all that with regart to necessity of fight for human rights and democracy and economical breakthrough, wich could result in removal of social inequality.

The pedagogical room : An obsolete thought or a necessity

Svärd, Christoffer January 2022 (has links)

Posthumanism: moral value of «superhuman» or elimination of moral value?

А., Ivanchenko, M. A. January 2019 (has links)
In modern society, the moral problems associated with the activities of artificial intelligence and other intellectual systems are acute. The paper examines the problems associated with the influence of strong artificial intelligence on human society: the problem of determining the rights and freedoms of artificial cognitive units, the interaction between man and postman, as well as ethical problems that potentially arise when creating AI. The object of the research is the philosophical course of posthumanism. The subject of the research is the moral and ethical component of posthumanism subsection called essentiocognitivism. The goal is to study the moral principles of strong artificial intelligence and other intellectual agents, or, more precisely, post-humanity, refracted through the prism of the moral and ethical teachings of the past and present. The research methods are comparison with already existing moral systems, analysis of current moral and ethical concepts, design and forecasting the course of development of the post humanistic concept. The relevance of the presented research is based on the growth of attention to the ideas of scientific and technological progress and technological singularity, the updating of the ethical problems of weak artificial intelligence, the emergence of new scientific discoveries that have ambiguous significance for humanity. As the result of the research it was established that post-humanity and the AI have positively effect on the life of mankind, therefore, their appearance is an excellent opportunity to solve global problems facing humanity now.
