The effect of a year's teacher-training course on the Vancouver Normal School students' understanding of arithmetic

Kilgour, Alma Jean January 1953 (has links)
The meaning theory of teaching arithmetic requires that those who do the teaching understand the mathematical bases of arithmetic. This study was concerned with determining the extent to which one teacher-training institution was successful in raising the level of understanding of arithmetic on the part of its students during its usual year's programme. The 280 testees were students of the Vancouver Normal School. The data were obtained through the administration of Glennon's Test of Basic Mathematical Understandings at the beginning and at the end of the school year. The analysis of the data led to the following conclusions: 1. The teacher-training programme was effective in bringing about small but significant gains in the students' achievement of the basic mathematical understandings contained in Glennon's Test. The testees knew an average of 61.5 per cent of the understandings at the beginning of the study and an average of 66 per cent of them at the end of the study. 2. The understandings related to the decimal system of notation and to the integers and processes were well known to the students on both tests whereas those understandings related to decimals and processes, fractions and processes, and the rationale of computation were considerably less well known on both tests. 3. Significant gains were made in the areas of the decimal system of notation, integers and processes, fractions and processes, and the rationale of computation. The gains were fairly equal for the four areas of arithmetic. The section on decimals and processes showed no significant gains. The order of difficulty for the five areas of arithmetic included in Glennon's Test remained essentially the same for the test and retest. 4. Superior gains in achievement of the basic mathematical understandings were made by the students who were in the lowest quarter of the cases in the initial test as compared with those attained by the students who were in the highest quarter of the cases in the initial test. 5. The test items tended to be 3.5-choice rather than 5-choice items for this group of testees. As determined by the number of actual choices per item the level of understanding for this group was higher at the end of the year than it was at the beginning of the year. 6. 83 per cent of the rejection of the misleads which took place was made in favour of the correct answers to the items whereas 17 per cent of the rejection was made in favour of the incorrect alternatives. The latter finding indicates that the change (perhaps gain) which takes place in relation to certain items is incompletely assessed by the usual statistical procedures. 7. The mean of the gross changes involved in the shift of responses to and from the correct answers in the test-retest situation averaged six times the mean of the differences between the net changes in the responses. It is evident that minor changes are considered in present methods of estimating reliability, whereas the major changes are obscured and so ignored. In spite of the apparent inconsistency of the responses of the group to the test items in this study, reliability was .94, indicating that further research is necessary in the area of test reliability. / Education, Faculty of / Graduate

Professional Development for Teaching in Higher Education: Faculty Perceptions and Attitudes

Pesce, Jessica Rose January 2015 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Karen D. Arnold / Faculty members in higher education typically have been trained in their subject matter but not in pedagogy (Austin, 1992; Healey, 2000). With increased concerns over the rising cost of college, traditional institutions of higher education face scrutiny and external challenges to their stability. Higher education groups and the public at large have called into question the teaching skills and preparedness of faculty members (Altbach, 2011), often criticizing their lack of interest in teaching and preference for research (Advisory Committee to the National Science Foundation, 1996). As a result, a growing number of institutions have developed means for supporting and enhancing teaching on campus. Despite studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of such programs (Coffey & Gibbs; 2001; 2004; Van Note Chism & Szabo, 1998), faculty participation in professional development for teaching remains low (MacKinnon, 2003; Sorcinelli, 2006). This mixed-methods study uses survey and interview data from full-time faculty (n = 432) at two research-intensive universities in the Northeastern United States to determine their attitudes and preferences regarding professional development for teaching in order to increase participation rates. Statistical tests showed significant differences by demographic groups; female and non-tenure track faculty are more likely to attend professional development, more likely to view it positively, and more likely to feel it is undervalued on campus. No significant differences were found by discipline or institution. Semi-structured, follow-up interviews were conducted with 11 faculty members. The findings showed that faculty perceive that their institutions do not value teaching. With limited time, faculty feel compelled to prioritize research over teaching, despite wanting to devote more attention to teaching. Other issues they discussed were: work-life balance, lack of preparation for teaching in graduate school, preferred topics and formats for programs, messages received from the administration, and the desire to collaborate with other faculty. The findings are analyzed using Bronfenbrenner's (1979; 1993; 1995) ecological systems theory to develop a full picture of faculty members' ecologies. The study concludes with recommendations for program facilitators, administrations, and future research. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2015. / Submitted to: Boston College. One of the courses that has grown in Brazil, in numbers of students registered and in offer is Administration. Consequently, it also increases the demand for professors with teaching skills to work in different kinds of institutions, whether private or public. In order to develop these skills, nowadays, there are in the country 150 post-graduation courses, which aim to develop the student for teaching, research and extension. The Post-Graduation Program in Business Administration of this institution has integrated on its curriculum the teaching training, which is seen as a way to develop teaching skills in practice. Therefore, this research aims to understand how the training develops teaching skills in the future administration professors. In the theoretical framework, we present the higher education and post-graduation studies in Brazil, teaching, the teaching training, skills and teaching competence. The approach is qualitative, characterized as descriptive and explanatory. We collected primary and secondary data, the primary by semi-structured interviews with coordinators, professors and students from this post-graduation program, the general coordinator of the post-graduation program of this institution and representatives of the National Association of Post-graduation. Secondary data refer to the law of higher education, other regulations on teaching training based in CAPES, CNPq, this university and its post-graduation program, in addition to the teaching training reports produced by the master s degree students and validated by the program coordination. The survey results indicate that with the offer of teaching training, the program is providing professors who have developed their skills through practice. Such experience has been reported in interviews and reports, which were used as material for analysis. To analyze the collected data we used the model of Paiva (2008), which classifies the skills in cognitive, functional, behavioral, policy and ethics. It was identified that when joining the master s not all students intended to do the teaching training, but to have a post-graduation degree that would guarantee good job opportunities. The analysis revealed the predominance of cognitive and functional development. Some of the activities conducted by the post-graduation students that reflected the development of these skills were: ministering class, preparing exams, correcting exams, finding the correct tone of voice, having class control, among others. We noticed that this program focus on the development of cognitive and functional skills and establishes ten competencies that the teaching training aims to develop, which didn t include any action focused on the development of policy and ethics skills. Finally, we believe that despite the limitations noted, the teaching training is an excellent opportunity to develop teaching skills, from the functional to the ethical one, enabling professionals to work at colleges and universities with skills and abilities to deal with different day by day situations.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to bring the invisible practices of art teachers into light. The analysis presented is based on the guidelines of Art Education and autobiographical research. Three former students from the Bachelor's course in Art Education in the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais were the main subject of analysis, which, moreover, focused on the relation between their artistic and teaching practice. Research data was composed of their final works, interviews, video records and photographs. The narrative interviews were transformed into monads inspired by the work of Walter Benjamin, and allowed us to identify a straightforward relation between their practices as artists and as teachers. This analysis also turned me, as an art teacher, subject of research. By observing my own experiences as a teacher and comparing it with those presented here, I was able to identify how these different practices are connected to each other, feeding each other in a circular and continuous movement, as the life itself. / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

Abrindo caminhos: a construção das identidades docentes de mulheres pelas trilhas, pontes e muros da pós-graduação em Contabilidade / Opening paths: the construction of faculty identity of women through the trails, bridges and walls of graduate studies in Accounting

Nganga, Camilla Soueneta Nascimento 03 May 2019 (has links)
The context of Accounting education in Brazil is marked by the expansion of undergraduate and graduate programs and by the increasing number of students registered and finishing their courses. This increase is notably attributed to women. Since 2005, the percentage of females registered in accounting undergraduate courses is higher than males. However, this percentage decreases in graduate programs and, consequently, in academic careers. (Nganga, Gouveia, & Casa Nova, 2018). In addition, the lack of focus on teaching training for females as well as their scarce contact with research development during their Accounting undergraduate programs reinforce the importance of stricto sensu or short-term graduate programs as a site of professional development for faculty in this field. In this research project, we seek to understand the construction of women faculty identities in graduate programs in the field of Accounting. These programs are characterized by low opportunities for the formation of faculty, by the focus on publications, and by masculine environments. Lester (2008) highlights that few researches address issues related to the identities of women as faculty. We consider important to describe and reflect on possible conflicts and the negotiation of one\'s own identity occurring in predominantly masculine academic environments. In view of this scenario, it is relevant to analyze the experiences of women who persist in the masculine and excluding environment of Accounting, a setting that excludes them while they advance towards their academic careers. The aim of the study was to understand the influence of the training and socialization processes experienced by female doctoral students in Accounting graduate programs in the construction of their professional faculty identities. It contributes to debates on women\'s faculty identities in the field of Accounting considering gender studies (Scott, 1986; 1988). Through a qualitative approach, we adopted social constructionism as epistemological perspective and feminist post-structuralism as theoretical position. We interviewed thirteen women doctoral students in different programs in the field of accounting in Brazil. Template analysis (King, 2004) was employed in the interpretation of evidences. We also analyzed five interviews with doctoral candidates in Accounting programs in the United States as counterpoint. As result we found that the development of the interviewees\' professional identities was marked by their path in their accountant undergraduate programs. This path includes professional socialization in a masculine, stressing, and demanding environment, a faculty formation that comprises teaching and research through positive and negative examples on faculty practices, and an intense pressure for publishing. For those who are mothers there is a difficult relation between maternity and academia. Finally, when reflecting about the influence of their doctoral program on their trajectory into faculty positions, these professionals show resilience. They propose of a teaching practice there is more humane and emphatic in which a doctoral program contributes to the construction of up-to-date and critical knowledge on the field of accounting. Additionally, the initial reflections about the U.S. interviewees allowed us to consider factors that are similar or distant from the Brazilian setting. For instance, in the United States, there seems to be an understanding of a doctoral program as professional practice in academia, which differs from Brazil in which the program is primarily a phase in someone\'s educational formation. The process of mentorship is present on the path of the interviewees in the American context. In Brazil, however, there was no report indicating actions related to mentorship. Regarding similarities, research training was considerably marked by quantitative and positivists approaches, and teaching training was limited to activities as Teaching Assistants. In addition, the reflections expressed by the interviewees evoke aspects related to work-life balance as well as maternity and the academic environment. In this context, there is the necessity to manage impressions (Lester, 2011), which connects to the fact that the ideas related to maternity are contradictory to the image of the \"ideal worker\" impacting the academic identity constitution. Finally, resilience is highlighted. In the face of all the challenges they met in their paths, the women interviewed for this project are committed to what can be called subversion of the system: they not only have conviction on their goals as educators as they exceed these goals by compromising to the development of more humane relations in academia that are capable of breaking the lack of empathy and indifference reported as part of their experiences.

The dissertation has as object of study teacher disempowerment practices at contemporary schools. Based on theoretical ideas of Contreras, Foucault, Nóvoa, Tardif, Lugli and Vicentini, the study had as goals: a) identify how the teacher disempowerment practices work in the daily school events and investigate how those practices are understood by the teachers; b) analyze how those practices are being incorporated to the school environment. The investigation that originated this dissertation was developed through a qualitative approach, in which nine working teachers from public schools with different teaching times were interviewed through the semi-structured interview technique. The analysis was developed among five main issues – 1) teaching knowledge and professional competence; 2) pedagogical meetings and teacher action; 3) school environment and teacher valuation; 4) evaluative processes and teaching; 5) teacher autonomy – which indicate evidences of that disempowerment process that nowadays teachers are suffering from and show evidences that teachers are working individually and not much cooperatively, what indicates that changes on the way of these professionals organization are needed. As contributions to consider in the teacher training area, intentions of resistance from teachers as a group for the retrieval of autonomy and teacher power inherent to their professional practice have been outlined. Finally, some challenges that need to be faced by the teachers as a group and as social responsible for teaching are pointed, like the need of establishing with the society the disclosure of respect for the teaching job, so then a valuation and acknowledgement movement can be introduced to the daily school environment.

The educational environment is full of recipes, models and ideals as to be or to constitute a good teacher. This good teacher model is influenced by the pedagogical tendencies that are linked to the political, social and economical processes that build the State and the society. Under theses influences, the studies about the teaching profession reveal as different educative projects produced different expectations for the teacher´s role. From then, there were several denominations of the teacher models historically constructed. Nowadays, the concept of good teacher has become important because it shows how to construct a good teaching, a quality teaching, introduced in the institutional projects, in curriculum, in the educational technology and in the school reform. Interspersed in the historical construction concept of a good teacher and teaching, dawns the debates about the institutional evaluation, one of the proposals of this paper, that launches a privileged look to unveil the institutional self-evaluation as a tool capable to provide elements of pedagogical intervention for the configuration of a good teacher. The research presented composes the Master in Education, in the Teachers´ Formation line, and it aims to know, through the registers in the institutional evaluation, how the student of the Technological University sets the good teacher. In this context, we ask: What skills of a good professor are brought up by the academics of the Technological University in the self teaching practice selfevaluation process? How can the results of the institutional self-evaluation process collaborate in the configuration of a good university professor? As theoretical reference about institutional evaluation were used the ideas of Dias Sobrinho (1995; 2003; 2010), Belloni (1995), Ristoff (1995), Cunha (1997) Simões (2000) among others that approach this theme. As to the referential about the meaning of a good teacher, fundamentals based in authors as Cunha (1994; 2005), Freire (1996), Castanho (2001), Nóvoa (1995; 2009), Pachane (2012), Tardif e Lessard (2005), Tardif (2007), Connell (2010) and others were used. The methodology used followed the technique of case study and analysis of content based in Bardin (1977). The result shows the following skills/attributes of the good professor of the Technological University: the good professor should have deep knowledge of his discipline, the good professor must explain the content very well and the good professor must keep good relationship with his students. Considering this result, it is understood that the Institutional Evaluation in the formative conception may see and engender several ways to consolidate actions for the teaching training that lead to the professionalization of the university professor, especially of the Technological and Professional Education / Há muitas maneiras de se estudar a prática docente.
