Embodied vulnerabilities : responding to violent encounters through installation practices

Haynes, Rachael Anne January 2009 (has links)
This practice-led research was initiated in response to a series of violent encounters that occurred between my fragile installations and viewers. The central focus of this study was to recuperate my installation practice in the wake of such events. This led to the development of a ‘responsive practice’ methodology, which reframed the installation process through an ethical lens developed from Emmanuel Levinas’ ethical phenomenology. The central propositions of this research are the reconceptualisation of ‘violent encounters’ in terms of difference whereby I accept viewers responses, even those which are violent, destructive or damaging, and secondly that the process operates as a generative excess for practice through which recuperative strategies can be found and implemented. By re-examining this process as it unfolded in the three phases of the practical component, I developed strategies whereby violated, destroyed or damaged works could be recuperated through the processes of reconfiguration, reparation and regeneration. Therefore my installations embody and articulate vulnerability but also demonstrate resilience and renewal.

In Dialogue with Clay

Eriksson, Malin Ida January 2020 (has links)
This paper is about my relationship to the material clay, and how it has affected my creative process. In this text I argue that clay is a material with human properties. I think of my practice as a dialogue between me and the material, an exchange rather than a monologue. This is how I picture clay as my main partner for discussing the deeper questions of what it is to be human, how clay as material can stand as metaphor for what it is to be living. I argue that clay has the poetic strength to communicate these questions of life of a more existential nature. Through the argument of clay being a material with human properties, I reason that a practice in materiality is a study of empathy since we spend much time with our materials to fully grasp how they behave. I firmly believe that this world is in need of an empathic movement, and I think that the field of craft has the possibility to be part of that movement. I see practitioners within the field of craft as practitioners of the sometimes irrational, emotional and indescribable parts of life. As researchers of the more existential qualities of life, I believe that we are important voices in a society that is getting more focused on rationality. With some help from writers, practitioners and philosophers within and outside the field of craft, I reason around the following research question: Can a material based practice stand as lodestar in todays society, to show empathy towards each other as beings as well as our surroundings?

[pt] SOCIABILIDADE MEDIADA POR MENSAGENS EFÊMERAS: USO DOS STORIES EM EXPERIÊNCIAS DE APROXIMAÇÃO E DISTANCIAMENTO / [en] SOCIABILITY MEDIATED BY EPHEMERAL MESSAGES: USE OF STORIES IN EXPERIENCES OF APPROACH AND DISTANCE

BRUNA NEVES LACERDA 07 October 2020 (has links)
[en] This dissertation about sociability mediated by ephemeral messages sought to study new communicative and interactional possibilities, with regard to momentary communications, called Stories, mediated by devices with internet access. For this, users of the social networks Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were surveyed, totaling 88 questionnaires answered over the years 2018 and 2019. The survey forms were applied to people aged between 18 and 24, who work, have access to internet via smarthphones, live in the city of Rio de Janeiro and use Stories from at least one of the three social networks mentioned. Authors such as Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman, Daniel Miller, Yochai Benkler and Robert Kozinets served as a theoretical basis for writing the study. Among the conclusions found, it is highlighted that in order to manage the appropriate impressions, segmentations can be created between the connections of friendships that are allowed to view what is published. Thus, a dialectic of distant approximation is created and, at times, an approximate distancing.

Making Culture - Continuous re-appropriation of a city piece

Puttkammer, Julius January 2022 (has links)
I understand the site of the former Schilleroper as a piece of the city with an unsettled history of trying, failing and trying again. Despite its difficult history of ups and downs, the Schilleroper has been a meaningful and popular place within its neighbourhood. A place of affordable, low threshold culture for the former working class residents. Even long after its life as a venue for large cultural events in the grand hall, it has been a lively public place in the area.Decades of neglect and decay later, the building is facing an uncertain future and it remains unclear, what, if anything, will be done to preserve it. The proposal suggests a (more or less) temporary use of the place as a continuous construction site of cultural making. Instead of aiming for a finalized architectural proposal, it describes a process of change and adaptation that, started by the suggested architectural interventions, could eventually develop its own self-renewing dynamics. It aims to offer a place that allows to be inhabited, appropriated and altered by its users. A place that not only accepts these notions, but actively depends on them. A place that the people of Hamburg can call their own.

The State Of Being Temporary : In Eleven Days I'll Be Gone

Holmgren, Julia January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis and in my graduation project, I am taking a closer look at the word temporary. It is an investigation in the transition between the two states: temporary and permanent. I am using the contrasting state permanent as an anti-pole to get perspective and to have a fair comparison. I want to give the state of temporarily a shape or a face and to define time through the material and design, like a time capsule. As an interior architect I am questioning the usage of the temporary in the architectural and giving it attention by using architecture, furniture, states and materials as my framework.

A preservação de \'instalações de arte\' com ênfase no contexto brasileiro: discussões teóricas e metodológicas / The preservation of \"Art Installations\" with emphasis on the Brazilian context: theoretical and methodological discussions

Sehn, Magali Melleu 13 April 2010 (has links)
Tackling the major methodological and ethical issues in the preservation of contemporary art is the starting point for this thesis. The cutting sought to emphasize the issue of preservation of some artistic modalities, currently called art installations, showing the Brazilian artistic production from the 80s. Compared to the study of five works of living artists and, mostly, not yet included in the institutional context, the relevance of the intention records of these artists is examined in terms of the preservation of their works, the role of the conservator-restorer and the artistic community.

No. of bitstreams: 1 PDF - Maria Rita Nascimento Duarte.pdf: 2708130 bytes, checksum: 83ff7c3f4dd9638f2a12090069b8a8e8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In the Neotropical zone the generalist habit is common among fish populations, especially in semi-arid rivers. In these systems, where the availability of food items varies spatially and temporally, it is expected that a more generalist strategy dominates. However, populations classified as generalist may actually be composed of relatively specialist individuals. This study aims at quantifying the use of food resources and understanding the individual contribution to population niche of Hoplias malabaricus, Geophagus brasiliensis and Prochilodus brevis. Four collections were performed at four sites along the Ipanema (PE) River, in April and July 2007 (wet season) and October 2007 and January 2008 (dry season). Sampling was performed at daylight, using gillnets, manual trawls and cast nets. The specimens collected were fixed in 4% formalin and preserved in 70% ethanol. The diet was quantified using the indirect volumetric method, frequency of occurrence and numeric frequency. Spatial patterns of variation in food items between species were evaluated using the Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMS). The Multi-Response Permutation Procedure (MRPP) was used to test the significance of differences in diet composition between species, sites and sampling periods. The degree of specialization of each individual was calculated using a proportional similarity index. The amplitude and niche overlap ratios were calculated using the Levins and Bolnick indexes. The graphical analysis of Amundsen was performed in order to correlate the diet composition with the selection of specific prey. The species showed a pattern of distribution and segregation in diet between the sampling sites. The MRPP showed that there were significant differences in the diet composition between species (MRPP, A= 0, 61; p= 0, 00). Geophagus brasiliensis specie showed significant differences between site 1 and site 4 (MRPP, A = 0.14; p = 0.03) and site 2 and site 4 (MRPP, A = 0.16 p = 0, 03), the Prochilodus brevis specie between site 1 and site 3 (MRPP, A = 0.28 p = 0.02) and site 1 and site 4 (MRPP, A = 0.11; p = 0.04). The three species present individual specialization in all sampling sites and in both periods of the hydrological cycle. The species Hoplias malabaricus has a population with most experts individuals, with rest of fish as the dominant item, however, with other individuals in the population consuming a high abundance of specific prey. However Geophagus brasiliensis presented a generalist population, with individuals of the population consuming a variety of items, displaying a relatively high component within phenotype. Prochilodus brevis showed a population with varied feeding strategy, presenting degrees of specialization with the contribution of Cyclotela item and generalization, where food items were consumed by more than half of the population. It was observed that individual specialization is highly correlated with niche overlap, indicating that the smaller the overlap the larger the degree of individual specialization. It is important to emphasize that the greatest degree of individual specialization was observed where there was a greater availability of food resources consumed by the populations.
