How was this object of knowledge formed, and what knowledge did it mobilize to establish itself resulting in powers, subjecting individuals to a kind of self-care in modernity. Has it been from devices such as palingenesia, or the theory of successive lives, the so-called reincarnation, which was able to establish relationships that would subjectivate the subject for self-care? Spiritism pleads for itself, as a teaching of the Superior Spirits, the status of science and philosophy. It is developed from a methodology used according to nineteenth-century science, such as observation of phenomena and deduction of general laws, publication of results. Establishes knowledge, network of relationships with the individual, indicates the way to modern ascesis. It reflects the discourse of self-care for self-government to be happy in this life and in the next lives, not as proselytism but pleading that its truths are a path of happiness, what must be followed is a project based on natural laws. It proposes relationships and techniques of self to subjectivate the way in which the subject must build his life in the relation with the other. This work investigated this set of values from Foucault, through the primary and secondary reading of his work on ethics and the construction of an aesthetic of himself. Also the work of historians of religions and societies was fundamental to analyze the networks of relations between the discourses on an immortal man, an individual with great responsibility about himself, a subject of self care. The corpus analyzed was the Third Book - Moral Laws, from The Book of Spirits. As a methodology, I investigated the texts written by Allan Kardec and sought their relations with the nineteenth century and their social movements, economic relations and tensions established by capitalism, the proletariat and the bourgeoisie; the departure of the church, the rise of Protestant sects marked by psychic phenomena and the full range of ideas around spiritual manifestations. These relationships led to the understanding of self-care in a rule drawn in modernity.

Todavia, a autoridade escolar, muitas vezes, busca controlar ainda mais essas forças, produzindo e reproduzindo a (in)disciplina. / The argumentation we propose here is part of an interest in bringing forth discussions on the production of schooled subjects, on the possibility of (re)thinking different processes of subjectivities present in school‟s day-to-day running – subjection, freedom practices. Taking the foucauldian perspective and that of some authors who work with this proposal (such as Gallo, Veiga-Neto, Revel and others) as theoretical framework, this research was carried out in secondary school, at Colégio de Aplicação João XXIII of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF). It was observed that the school seeks to control the schooled bodies daily. Thus, „indiscipline‟ was considered a practice of resistance against the effects of power. This is inherent in that sort of pedagogic process, because the greater the control is, the more resistance forces are produced. However, many times, school authority seeks to control these forces even more, thus producing and reproducing (in)discipline. As it is, the ethics of aesthetics of existence as care of the self can become, to teaching practices, a means of resistance to that model of school, to imposed practices. It provides teachers and others with different arrangements of forces within such a space, games of mutual liberties, reciprocal between one another, daily.

Suicide prevention in mental health patients : the role of primary care

Saini, Pooja January 2015 (has links)
Background: Primary care may be a key setting for suicide prevention as many patients visit their General Practitioner (GP) in the weeks leading up to their death. Comparatively little is known about GPs’ perspectives on risk assessment, treatment adherence, management of and interactions with suicidal patients prior to the patient’s suicide and the services available in primary care for suicide prevention. Aim: This study aimed to explore primary care data on a clinical sample of individuals who died by suicide and were in recent contact with mental health services in order to: investigate the frequency and nature of general practice consultations; examine risk assessment, treatment adherence and management in primary and secondary care; gain GPs’ views on patient non-adherence to treatment and service availability for the management of suicidal patients. Method: A mixed-methods study design including data from the National Confidential Inquiry on 336 patients who died by suicide, data from 286 patient coroner files, primary care medical notes on 291 patients and 198 semi-structured face–to-face interviews with GPs across the North West of England. We collected data on GPs' views on the treatment and management of patients in the year prior to suicide, suicide prevention generally and local mental health service provision. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic approach. Results: Overall, 91% of individuals consulted their GP on at least one occasion in the year before suicide. GPs reported concerns about their patient’s safety in 27% of cases, but only 16% of them thought that the suicide could have been prevented. The overall agreement in the rating of risk between primary and specialist care was poor (overall kappa = 0.127; p = 0.10). Non-adherence was reported for 43% of patients. The main reasons for non-adherence were lack of insight, reported side effects and multiple psychiatric diagnoses. We obtained qualitative data from GPs on their interpretations of suicide attempts or self-harm, professional isolation and GP responsibilities when managing suicidal patients. Limitations: Our findings may not be generalisable to people who died by suicide and were not under the care of specialist services. GPs recruited for the study may have had different views from GPs who have never experienced a patient suicide. Our findings may not be representative of the rest of the UK although many of the issues identified are likely to apply across services. Conclusion: Suicide prevention in primary care is challenging. Possible strategies for future suicide prevention in general practice include: increasing GP awareness of suicide-related issues and improving training and risk assessment skills; increasing awareness in primary care about why patients may not want treatments offered by focusing on each individual’s situational context; removing barriers to accessing therapies and treatments; and, better liaison and collaboration between services to improve patient outcomes.

Perencini, Tiago Brentam. January 2020 (has links)
The singular path of my existence, combined with the perception of the emergence of knowledge and practices of magic as a possibility of resistance to biopolitics and neoliberalism today, supported the research problem in the following terms: How does the relationship between philosophy and magic allow us to experience another philosophical education at the present time? My general objective is to develop bordering uses between magic and philosophy that problematize prevailing practices in our academic formation in philosophy. I experiment with the hypothesis that making the ethics of care of the self visible in its archaic dimension - an emerging chronology of Western philosophy - allows integration into the field of magic as a possibility to rehearse a type of philosophical education that expands the set of self-techniques beyond critical thinking and humanism as an epistemological and disciplinary paradigm that currently subjective us. I think of care of the self tied to two key concepts that relate to it in the archaic period: the daimon and dreams. The specificity of my object invites Michel Foucault as the main theoretical framework of the thesis, but it requires me to think with and beyond him. This movement arises from four specific objectives, synthesized as thesis chapters: (1) I rehearse an anarcheology as a research procedure and attitude, showing certain (un)desirable...

Tietboehl, Lúcia Karam January 2015 (has links)
The present study is about the contemporary social movements; mainly, the ones that take the occupation of public spaces as a strategy of resistance. Since 2011, new ways of insurgency have taken the streets in different countries and continents. Taking apart the local differences, a typical characteristic of these popular meetings, the occupation of public spaces arises as a tendency that cuts across these expressions. The occupation, by these means, takes different visibility and importance, becoming a singular expression of our period. Following the works of collectives that support the idea of the occupation of public spaces in the city of Porto Alegre, were established the ways of subjectification related to this new way of political articulation. Wondering if this is a way of resistance against the subjecting hegemonic ways, I attend to the practices that give a singular aspect to these urban phenomenons, analysing its possibilities of invention. The idea of an ethics of the care of the self, proposed by Michel Foucault, is an interesting tool to promote the investigation about these ethical and political possibilities. In the present field – the social movements and the collective and critical attitude – it is important to analyse the institutions of power and freedom, subjects specially examined by Foucault. As a starting point, the investigation of the occupation movements for public spaces; later on, its conditions of possibility, internationally and in Porto Alegre, to present two lines that, by merging, compose the ways of politicization that are here put in analysis. These are: the occupation of something public and the ways of occupying the self. This experience of research is produced from a militant position. Also by this position, were established some outcomes of these new ways of meeting, in the aspects of the city and the subjects that occupy, thinking about the possibilities of creating a militancy linked to ethical ways of acting.

The Care of the Self in The Duchess of Malfi, The Roaring Girl, and The Maid of Honor

Hsu, Liangfong 27 July 2006 (has links)
This dissertation aims to explore the practice of the care of the self in three Renaissance plays by means of Michel Foucault¡¦s theory of the technologies of the self derived from the Greco-Roman ethics of the care of the self. Foucault asserts that the Greek ethics of the care of the self offers a beneficial viewpoint to the modern investigation of freedom outside of sexual liberation. This study first constructs the guiding principles for the possible realization of the Greco-Roman ethics of the care of the self in other epochs, especially the early modern era. The technologies of the self are interconnected with the technologies of power, and their contact point resides in governmentality. The subject is shaped by the governing schema of the ruling authorities while concurrently being modified by the self through self-government. The subject must comprehend the governing tactics of the authorities in order not to be governed too much and can further govern other people for personal purposes. To be able to do so is to be equipped with a philosophical ethos of critique, which can be executed in three perspectives: thought ¡V an attitude of criticism, action ¡V the plebian quality, and words ¡V the practice of parrhesia. The study then applies the aforementioned guiding principles to discuss the three heroines in terms of the four aspects proposed by Foucault in the relationship to the self: the determination of the ethical substance, the mode of subjection, the means of ethical works, and the telso of the ethical subject. It investigates how the three heroines of different social statuses ¡V aristocrat, citizen, gentry ¡Vfulfill the practice of the care of the self through various strategies and unconventional life styles.
