Employees’ experiences of work-life balance

In recent years, the interest in work-life balance within organizations has increased to a great extent due to the high technology development such as smartphones, laptops, tablets etc. The existing high technology work equipment has generated a possibility for employees to be more available and work more if needed and expected by the employer. The extended availability has caused a lot of employees to increase their working time, which in turn has induced increased stress and pressure (Yarnall, 2008, 121). The consequences have led to that the dichotomy work-life and private life adopts more blurred borders and often develops into a situation like the ”role-overload” (Allvin et al., 2013, 107) and a conflict between these two life spheres becomes a fact. Nowadays, several Swedish organizations have work-life balance practices for their employees. Some of these practices are regulated under Swedish legislation, for instance parental leave and the possibility for parents with small children to work part-time. This study investigates the employees’ actual experiences of work-life balance practices and how these practices affect the employees and indirectly the employer. There is a general assumption that organizations that offer different work-life balance practices do so to attract and keep employees, which is the reason why such practices are being viewed as a positive measure (Doherty, 2004, 447). This study investigates if and in what way there are positive and/or negative experiences or consequences of work-life balance practices for the employees, which in turn also could be affecting the employers. The study is qualitative and empirical. Eight Swedish officials employed in different Swedish organizations (one informant works for an American organization) have been interviewed. The theoretical models that have been used to specify and define the research method are “The Career Active System Triad, CAST” (Baruch, 2004, 100) and “The pros and cons of alternative work arrangements” (B.H. Gottlieb, E.K. Kelloway and E. Barham 1998) and to explain the result “The role expansion theory” (Nordenmark, 2004, 47). This study reveals the informants’ reality and experiences, which shows how society through companies and organizations (mezzo level) forms and guides the individuals (micro level) to act in certain ways. This phenomenon illustrates how society generates a “collective conscience” (Durkheim in Andersen & Kaspersen, 2007, 64). This study shows that organizations and societies implicitly through legislation, rules, practices and policies generate “value rational social action” (Weber in Andersen & Kaspersen, 2007, 74-75) among the individuals, which make them act in a certain way in accordance with the value rational social action, whether or not it fits in their individual life at the moment. Nevertheless, the result also demonstrates the positive attitudes towards the work-life balance practices offered by organizations and society through legislation. These practices allow employees regardless of gender to make choices that enables them to have several roles in life, which has been verified in previous research to be beneficial for well-being and health in general.

Personal motives of professional motivation and subsequent professional career, attitudes towards future profession formed by lectures and professional practice and also methods of professional career stimulation in the high schools was considered in the empirical part.

Carreira e conjugalidade: a percepção da mulher sobre a influência da relação conjugal no desenvolvimento de sua carreira / Career and conjugality: the woman\'s perception of the influence of the conjugal relationship on her career development

O objetivo deste estudo foi o de identificar os tipos de influência que a relação conjugal exerce no desenvolvimento da carreira da mulher. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, teve-se como referência as transformações das carreiras, das relações conjugais, das relações de gênero e dos processos identitários, por meio das interações simbólicas, tendo olhar atento ao processo de desenvolvimento da carreira da mulher e seus desafios. Com base no objetivo proposto, foi realizada uma pesquisa descritiva e quantitativa com mulheres brasileiras, de faixa etária compreendida entre 20 e 60 anos, graduadas em nível superior e que estavam em um relacionamento conjugal (casamento oficializado ou união estável). O método de coleta adotado foi um levantamento do tipo survey, com o uso de questionário eletrônico, tendo participado da amostra 532 mulheres. Após a coleta dos dados, foram feitas a análise descritiva dos dados e análises inferenciais, por meio de técnicas estatísticas multivariadas e testes paramétricos e não paramétricos. O resultado da Análise Fatorial Exploratória (AFE) apontou a identificação de três tipos de influência da relação conjugal sobre o desenvolvimento da carreira da mulher: apoio da relação conjugal à carreira da mulher, apoio financeiro do cônjuge à carreira da mulher e sabotagem à carreira da mulher por parte do cônjuge. As análises realizadas por meio de testes estatísticos indicaram a existência de associação entre os três tipos de apoio identificados e os fatores relacionados ao desenvolvimento da carreira, nas dimensões objetiva e subjetiva, das mulheres que fizeram parte da amostra. A principal contribuição do estudo foi a de identificar, sob a perspectiva das mulheres pesquisadas, diferentes tipos de influência da relação conjugal e do tipo de relacionamento estabelecido entre os cônjuges no desenvolvimento da carreira da mulher. / The objective of this study was to identify the types of influence that the conjugal relationship exerts on the development of women\'s careers. For the development of the research, reference was made to the transformations of careers, marital relations, gender relations and identity processes, through symbolic interactions, having a careful look at the development process of women\'s career and their challenges. Based on the proposed objective, a descriptive and quantitative study was carried out with Brazilian women aged between 20 and 60 years old, with a university undergraduate degree and in a marital relationship (official marriage or stable union). The method of collection was a survey, with the use of an electronic questionnaire. 532 women participated in the sample. After data collection, descriptive analysis of the data and inferential analyzes were performed, using multivariate statistical techniques and parametric and non-parametric tests. The results of the Exploratory Factor Analysis (AFE) identified three types of influence of the marital relationship on the development of the woman\'s career: conjugal support to the woman\'s career development, financial support of the spouse to the woman\'s career development, and sabotage of the woman\'s career by the spouse. Statistical analyzes indicated that there was an association between the three types of support identified and the career development factors, in both the objective and subjective dimensions, of the women surveyed. The main contribution of the study, from the perspective of the women surveyed, was the identification of different types of influence of the conjugal relationship and the type of relationship established between the spouses in the development of the woman\'s career.

A transição de carreira do ex-atleta de alto rendimento / Career transition of higher performance athletes

Muitos indivíduos planejam sua carreira de acordo com os objetivos de vida. Para o atleta de alto rendimento, a carreira esportiva apresenta características particulares por ser mais dinâmica e ter ciclo mais curto que outras mais tradicionais. Teorias de carreira esportiva ainda são pouco estudadas na academia e, por esse motivo, justificam-se estudos que investiguem a carreira do atleta, uma vez que, em geral, há pouca ou nenhuma preparação para que esse profissional continue trabalhando após sua aposentadoria. O foco deste trabalho está nessa transição, já que os desafios enfrentados pelos atletas são complexos quando deixam suas práticas de alto desempenho para ter uma nova atuação. Nesse contexto, o objetivo geral deste trabalho foi identificar e analisar os fatores que influenciam o processo de transição no encerramento da carreira esportiva do atleta de alto rendimento. Buscou-se compreender as características desses fatores e seus consequentes resultados, com a intenção de relacionar os resultados de carreira classificados como positivos com as características da transição para a aposentadoria. Para atender a esse objetivo, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa com base em modelos teóricos de transição de carreira na aposentadoria: modelo adaptado de Feldman e Beehr (2011) e de Hesketh, Griffin e Loh (2011), modelo de transição de Nicholson (1990), e modelo de desenvolvimento de Higgins e Kram (2001). A amostra da pesquisa abrange 13 ex-atletas de modalidades individuais - dez disputaram os Jogos Olímpicos, dos quais seis são medalhistas - que encerraram sua carreira atlética nos últimos dez anos. Foram conduzidas entrevistas em profundidade, com um roteiro de 21 questões abertas e coletados dados secundários disponíveis na internet. A análise dos dados foi feita por meio da análise de conteúdo. Em relação aos resultados, as transições de carreira foram bem realizadas, dando sua continuidade no contexto esportivo, ou não. É importante entender que a carreira de um profissional contemple não apenas a carreira Olímpica (que está contida na carreira atlética), mas também algo mais amplo (chamado de carreira esportiva), quando o atleta passa a ter uma nova atividade de trabalho na sua modalidade. Outra descoberta é em relação às carreiras objetiva e subjetiva bem sucedidas, pois não era esperado que os ex-atletas estivessem com renda financeira maior do que antes, nem que estivessem tão satisfeitos com ambos os momentos das carreiras. Também foi relevante verificar a importância da manutenção de uma rede de desenvolvimento forte, diversa ou não, para que a transição para a aposentadoria seja positiva, e que o processo de transição começa a ocorrer na própria carreira atlética. As contribuições deste trabalho foram direcionadas aos atletas, aos indivíduos que estão nas suas redes, às organizações esportivas, às universidades, aos pesquisadores da área de Administração e aos gestores de políticas públicas. / Many individuals plan their careers according to life goals. The sport career of a higher performance athlete encompasses special features because it is more dynamic and the cycle is shorter when compared to more traditional carrers. Sport career theories are still underresearched in literature. Therefore, studies investigating the career of the athlete are justifiable. It is common for those professionals to have no or little preparation on keep working after the end of the athletic period. This study focused on this transition, as many challenges faced by those athletes when leaving their higher performance activities are complex. In this context, the general goal of this study was to identify and analyze factors that influence the transition process by the end of the higher performance athlete\'s sport carrer. It aimed at understanding the characteristics of such factors and their resulting outputs and at relating the resulting career rated as \'positive\' with the characteristics of transition to retirement. In order to meet this goal, a qualitative research was conducted based on theoretical models of career transition to retirement: adapted models of Feldman and Beehr (2011) and of Hesketh, Griffin and Loh (2011), transition model of Nicholson (1990), and development model of Higgis and Kram (2001). The sample encompassed 13 former individual sport athletes--10 played the Olympic Games and 6 of which received medals--who have ended the athletic careers whitin the last ten years. In-depth interviews with 21 open questions were conducted in addition to secondary data colleted from the Internet. Data analysis was performed through content analysis. Regarding results, career transitions were well performed, as former athletes proceeded to activities both inside and outside the sport context. It is important to highlight that the career of a professional did not embrace only the Olympic career--which is encompassed within the athletic career--but also something more comprehensive--known as sport career--, when the athlete took on a new work activity. Another finding regards the objective and the subjective successful careers, as it was not expected that former athletes had higher earnings after the end of their athletic career. Moreover, it was not expected that they were satisfied both before and after the end of their athletic career. A strong development network--diverse or not--showed to be important for the transition process to be positive and such transition begun during the athletic career itself. Contributions of this study are directed to athletes, individuals belonging to their network, sport organizations, universities, Business researchers, and public policies managers.

The theme for the training of teachers relied on theoretical and practical approach in view of the history of life that has made studies of interest to several authors (NÓVOA, 1992; MORAES, 1996; BOLIVAR, 2002; SOUZA, 2006; among others). The educational scenario space has been extensive discussions on the theme of teacher education identified as priority in the search for quality education. Actions/initiatives, many teachers have been considered key points about the construction of knowledge in that space, which bring out improvements and changes in the practices of these professionals. Listening to teachers of different generations in educational performance, value life trajectories, time and giving voice to reflect the knowledge built or under construction in and with the teaching practice show that space and time that construction occurs if the exchange of experiences within and outside the classroom represent a basis for self-training and influence in the formation of their peers, were driving the actions of this research. Seven (7) teachers working in different fields were selected, three (3) randomly selected and four (4) in a deliberate, for the work they already have performed throughout their careers. The criteria for selection of participants include: the availability of time to participate and, be acting as a teacher in high school, at different stages (service time). The selected teachers working in two schools in the state schools, located in the same community, called in this work, School and College Alpha Beta. It is, therefore, a field whose data collection instruments were the individual and collective oral histories, recorded and transcribed. The reports were considered significant organized into thematic categories, created in an attempt to answer the questions guiding the research (see introduction to this study). The results show the life narratives as valuable opportunities for reflection on teaching practice, mobilizing diverse knowledge necessary for teaching. In the narratives of individual and collective history was clear that in the context of school and classroom, actions are taken that turned into meaningful experiences exchanged among peers, constitute a solid basis for the formation and self-education teacher, the which enables the teacher to understand and recognize as the one responsible for continuity of training, relevant point to improvements in teaching. / O objetivo geral deste estudo foi compreender, através de narrativas orais, como e onde são construídos saberes necessários à prática de docentes do ensino médio, que atuam em duas escolas públicas estaduais da zona norte, no município de Manaus. A temática sobre formação de professores se apoiou em abordagem teórico-prática, na perspectiva da história de vida que tem se constituído interesse de estudos para vários autores (NÓVOA, 1992; MORAES, 1996; BOLIVAR, 2002; SOUZA, 2006; entre outros). O cenário educacional tem sido espaço de amplas discussões sobre o tema da formação docente apontada como prioridade na busca pela qualidade do ensino. Ações/iniciativas de muitos docentes têm sido consideradas pontos primordiais para a construção de saberes nesse mesmo espaço, as quais fazem emergir melhorias e transformações nas práticas desses profissionais. Ouvir docentes de diferentes gerações na atuação docente; valorizar trajetórias de vida, dando vez e voz que reflitam os saberes construídos ou em construção na e com a prática docente; evidenciar em que espaço e momentos essa construção ocorre; se as trocas de experiências vivenciadas dentro e fora da sala de aula representam base para a autoformação e se influenciam na formação de seus pares, foram as ações direcionadoras desta pesquisa. Sete (7) professores que atuam em diferentes áreas do conhecimento foram selecionados, sendo três (3) escolhidos aleatoriamente e quatro (4) de forma proposital, pelo trabalho que estes já vêm realizando ao longo de suas carreiras. Os critérios para a seleção dos participantes foram: disponibilidade de tempo para participar da pesquisa e; estar atuando na docência no ensino médio, em diferentes fases (tempo de serviço). Os docentes selecionados atuam em duas escolas da rede estadual de ensino, situadas na mesma comunidade, denominadas neste trabalho, de Escola Alfa e Escola Beta. Trata-se, pois, de uma pesquisa de campo cujos instrumentos de coleta foram os relatos orais individuais e coletivos, gravados e transcritos. Os relatos considerados significativos foram organizados em categorias temáticas, criadas na tentativa de responder as questões norteadoras da pesquisa (ver introdução deste estudo). Os resultados evidenciam as narrativas de vida como valiosas possibilidades de reflexão sobre a prática docente, mobilizando diversos saberes necessários à prática docente. Nas narrativas da história singular e da coletiva ficou claro que, no contexto da escola e da sala de aula, são realizadas ações que transformadas em experiências significativas, trocadas entre os pares, constituem-se bases sólidas para processo de formação e autoformação docente, o que possibilita ao professor entender-se e reconhecer-se como um dos responsáveis pela continuidade da sua formação profissional, ponto relevante para melhorias no trabalho docente.

Proposta de processo de transição de executivo para empreendedor / Proposed transition process from executive to entrepreneur

Este projeto aponta caminhos para executivos que consideram a possibilidade de migrar para uma atividade profissional independente e empreendedora. É cada vez mais comum, em nossa sociedade moderna, que executivos bem-sucedidos de empresas de grande e médio portes encontrem-se em dúvida quanto à continuidade de sua carreira profissional corporativa, após atingirem níveis importantes na organização. Nesse momento, há necessidade de orientação, suporte, estudos e pesquisas que possam apoiar a reflexão, a decisão e apontar os principais fatores a serem considerados na elaboração de um plano de transição com foco no empreendedorismo. Neste estudo, apresenta-se uma proposta de processo para esses profissionais, com base na própria experiência do Autor, como ponto de partida para uma pesquisa teórica quanto às percepções dos executivos sobre o empreendedorismo e aos aspectos diferenciados de perfil e comportamento do empreendedor. Apresenta-se, também, uma linha de pensamento sobre transição de identidade de carreira e quais técnicas de planejamento pessoal podem sustentar a estruturação de um plano de ação com abordagem experimental. A proposta de processo apresentada é resultado da análise do conteúdo de uma pesquisa qualitativa descritiva, baseada no resultado do levantamento bibliográfico e realizada com dez executivos que passaram pela transição rumo ao empreendedorismo. O processo proposto de transição de executivo a empreendedor inicia-se com um exercício de autoconhecimento para embasar uma avaliação das características diferenciadas dos empreendedores, os quais normalmente são motivados por realização e por ajudar as pessoas; possuem uma visão apurada para encontrar oportunidades em áreas que conhecem e de que gostam; aceitam riscos maiores; buscam constantemente a inovação e o aprendizado; trabalham com uma abordagem flexível que se aproveita das experiências corporativas e empreendedoras anteriores. O autoconhecimento alimenta, em paralelo, o desenvolvimento de um planejamento estratégico pessoal, a partir da definição ou revisão do propósito de vida e dos valores pessoais, que permitirão a definição de objetivos e metas para a gestão dos três capitais (financeiro, intelectual e social), recomendados como uma nova abordagem ao Planejamento Estratégico Pessoal. A transição de identidade deve ocorrer com muita experimentação, atenção aos momentos de insights, mudanças e decisões, enquanto se busca o apoio pessoal e empreendedor ao executivo, como elementos finais do processo. / This project points a process for executives considering a migration towards an independent and entrepreneur professional function. It is getting common in our modern society that successful executives from large and medium companies, find themselves in doubt about the sequence of their corporative career after reaching significant high levels at organizations. At this moment, there is a need for orientation, support, studies and researches to support reflection, decision and to point the main factors to be considered when preparing a transition plan with focus on entrepreneurship. In this study, it is proposed a transition process for these professionals, based on the Author\'s own experience, used as the starting point for a theory research about how executives perceive the entrepreneurship and the entrepreneur differentiated aspects of profile and behavior. It\'s also presented a line of thought for career identity transition and which techniques of personal planning can support the development of an action plan with an experimental approach. The proposed process delivered here is the resultof a content analysis done over an descriptive qualitative research, which was based on the results of a bibliographic survey, and the interviews with ten executives who transitioned towards entrepreneurship. The proposed transition process from executive to entrepreneur starts with a self-knowledge exercise to support an entrepreneur differentiated characteristics evaluation, who usually are motivated by accomplishment and to help other people; they have a well developed ability to identify opportunities in segments they know and enjoy; they accept to take higher risks than executives; they constantly search for innovation and learning; and they work with a flexible approach taking benefit of their previous corporate and entrepreneur experiences. The self-knowledge exercise also feeds in parallel, the development of a personal strategic plan, initiated with the definition or review of a life purpose and the personal values, that will allow the goals and targets definition to manage the three capitals (financial, intellectual and social) recommended as a new approach to personal strategic planning. The professional identity transition should happen with a lot of experimentation, attention to the insights, changes and decision moments, while the executive consider personal and entrepreneur support, as the final elements of the process.

Mentorystė kaip studentų profesinių gebėjimų tobulinimo prielaida atliekant pedagoginę praktiką bendrojo lavinimo mokykloje / Mentorship as the prerequisite for the development of students’ professional capacities while doing teaching practice in secondary schools

Vykstantys pokyčiai pedagogų rengime reikalauja naujo požiūrio ne tik į būsimąjį mokytoją, bet ir į jo pasirengimą profesinei karjerai. Teorinės įžvalgos ir užsienio šalių praktika patvirtina mentoriaus kaip vedlio poreikį. Tačiau Lietuvoje mentorių rengimas dar neįsibėgėjo, todėl studentų praktikai vadovauja pedagogai. Nors mokytojai ir turi profesinį pasirengimą, tačiau neįmanoma numatyti daugelio subtilių mokytojo darbo situacijų ar aspektų – tam reikia laiko ir patirties. Todėl tokiomis aplinkybėmis gabių ir patyrusių kolegų pagalba padėtų studentams įveikti sunkumus, su kuriais jie gali susidurti kaip savo profesijos naujokai. Tyrimo problema - menkas kompetencijų raiškos pedagoginėje praktikoje ištirtumo lygis. Tyrimo metu nustatyta, kad pedagogai vadovaujantys studentų praktikai ne visuomet turi galimybę atskleisti visus mokytojavimo ir dalyvavimo mokyklos gyvenime aspektus. Didžiai daliai studentų neteko dirbti su specialiųjų poreikių vaikais, dalyvauti projektinėje ar kultūrinėje mokyklos veikloje. Praktikos metu dėl veiklos organizavimo mokykloje ypatumų, nesudaromos prielaidos strateginio planavimo gebėjimų tobulinimui. Tik mažai daliai tyrime dalyvavusių studentų teko rengti teminius planus, individualiąsias programas, adaptuotas arba modifikuotas programas. Atliktas tyrimas atskleidė, kad ne visi studentai yra tinkamai pasirengę metodiniu, psichologiniu bei pedagoginiu aspektais. Theoretical insights and the experience of foreign countries substantiate the need for mentor as guide, however, mentors' training in Lithuania has not gain acceleration yet, and in result, students are supervised by teachers in their practices. Despite the fact that teachers are professionally trained, it is impossible to foresee a number of subtle situations and aspects of the teacher’s work – it requires both, the time and experience. Therefore, under such circumstances the help of capable and experienced colleagues would help students overcome all the difficulties they may encounter while beginners of their profession. The research problem is the insufficient level of research on competence display in pedagogic practice. The research resulted in the finding that teachers supervising student practice are not always able to reveal all the aspects of teaching and participating in school life. Most of the students did not have chance to work with children of special needs, participate in project or cultural activities of the school. Due to the peculiarities of the activity organizing at schools during the practice no prerequisites for the development of the capacities of strategic planning are made. Young people‘s socialization process, which takes place in Šiauliai Vocational Education and Training Centre (the greatest vocational education and training centre in Lithuania), Construction and Mechanics department, is examined and analysed in the Master‘s work. The family is the initial socialization institution. The general goal of the family is to be an open system with mutual relationship, stability of limits and proper parts. Family, as a system, form a socialization activity Most often, not – attending school children meet with the entire complex of the problems: family problems. Practice has proved that more attention in the vocational education methodology is given to the ideas of the pragmatism. The criterion – referenced admission that would enable to estimate students’ vocational suitability has not been established, yet. The rapid economical growth in the Europeand Union requires constantly improving and competitive society. Theoretical implementation of vocational education and training principles essentially depends upon the mechanism of the labour market, which increases its requirements at present and encourages life – long learning. Nowadays we have an industrial society.

Koks mokinių žinojimo lygmuo, apie profesinės karjeros planavimą? 2. Kiek ir kokių žinių apie profesinės karjeros planavimą mokiniams suteikia mokykla? Tikslas: Ištirti ir palyginti Lietuvos mokyklos ir Vokietijos mokyklos profesinės karjeros palanvimo mokinių požiūrį. Uždaviniai: 1. Išanalizuoti Lietuvos mokyklos ir Vokietijos mokyklos profesinės karjeros planavimo panašumus ir skirtumus. 2. Išnagrinėti Lietuvos mokyklos ir Vokietijos mokyklos teikiamą mokiniams informaciją apie profesinės karjeros planavimą. 3. Ištirti ir palyginti Lietuvos mokyklos ir Vokietijos mokyklos mokinių požiūrį į profesinės karjeros planavimą. Hipotezė: Lietuvos ir Vokietijos mokyklų 12 klasių mokinių požiūris į profesinės karjeros planavimą skiriasi. Rezultatai. 1. Išanalizavus Lietuvos mokyklos ir Vokietijos mokyklos profesinės karjeros planavimo panašumus ir skirtumus galima teigti, kad Vokietijoje veikia švietimo ir profesinio informavimo, orientavimo ir konsultavimo sistema mokyklose, aukštosiose mokyklose, įdarbinimo agentūrose, savivaldybių socialinės ir jaunimo rūpybos tarnybos, privačios ir valstybinės institucijos.
